- Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011 Product #26560 (In Stock)
-
-
Cortese is best known as the grape of Gavi, but it's grown seldom as interesting as this! This wine is surprisingly complex on the nose, although we struggled to put it to words. Think of smelling an herbal infusion with lemon, honey, and lavender on a sunny day. (Fanciful, but it's the best I could do!) In the mouth the wine is clean and crisp with notes of lemon, bees wax, and fresh herbs complicated by something hard to describe but vaguely grapefruity. finishes clean and fresh with just a hint of green apple. this is going to be our "go to" for picnics, cold seafood salads, and simple chicken dishes. A whole lotta wine for the money.
- La Slina Gavi Cichero 2011 Product #26338 (In Stock)
-
-
La Slina's owner/winemaker Giorgio Cichero's flagship Gavi is 100% Cortese from the hills of Italy's Piemonte region. It's fragrant with hints of fruit and white flowers - very pretty! Then crisp and dry on the palate with crunchy apple and citrus notes. The finish is bright and fresh - a wine that will go with seafood, but also mushroom dishes.
- Lovisolo Vino Spumonte Brut Rose NV Product #24653 (In Stock)
-
-
It's back - our favorite sparkling pink Nebbiolo from Italy. At first, a bizarre idea, but turns out deliciously here. The wine’s a pretty pale salmon pink color with brilliant highlights and zesty bubbles. The aromas suggest Nebbiolo – cherries, strawberries, red flowers, perhaps some tar. Then in them mouth there’s lots of bright berry fruit framed by notes of basil and mint. The ripe fruit builds towards the middle before everything finishes clean, crisp, and dry with lingering cherry/berry fruit and mouthwatering acidity. A really good sparkling rosé that’s fun to look at and a delight to drink.
- Oddero Moscato d'Asti 2011 Product #26730 (In Stock)
-
-
Too new for a review, but one of the best Moscato d’Asti wines we’ve tasted this year. A small production, hand-crafted, Moscato from high-altitude vineyards and 15-20 year-old vines. Fermented naturally in small steel fermenters to retain it's natural frothy fizz, it's bursting with aromas and flavors of peach, pear and apricot. Wonderful acidity, nicely sweet, and low in alcohol - a great end to a fine meal or fun on its own anytime!
- Fracchia Voulet Malvasia Di Casorzo D'asti 2012 Product #26876 (In Stock)
-
-
This delicious frizzante wine is a rare version of red Malvasia, vinified with a pleasant touch of sweetness and a light, frothy, sparkle. As The Washington Post’s Dave McIntyre said about the 2011, “This delightful little frizzante red from Piedmont is a cousin to Brachetto d’Acqui, and equal to Brachetto in its affinity for chocolate." As always, the lightly sweet red raspberry and strawberry fruit is a delight!
- Castello Di Neive Barbera d'Alba Santo Stefano 2009 Product #26550 (In Stock)
-
-
Here's a great, ripe and fairly full Barbera d'Alba that will work with anything Italian and even a traditional American turkey and stuffing feast! Aromas of blackberry, plum, tar and smoke carry over to the rich and round palate. Nicely mouth-coating and soft in the middle (where a balsamic note weaves in and out) before getting juicy and fresh on the long, vibrant, finish. Nicely powerful and balanced and very fun to drink right now.
- Castello De Neive Grignolino Piemonte 2011 Product #27064 (In Stock)
-
-
Even though the color is dark pink, this isn't rose - it's just as red as Grgnolino gets! This traditional Piemonte grape delivers light, crisp, very fresh wine loaded with sour cherry and berry fruit with hints of summery rose petal and exotic spice. Grignoliono's sometimes biting tannins have been tamed here, making this a fantastic wine to drink cool from the fridge to quench your thirst or enhance any meal.
- Damilano Nebbiolo d'Alba Marghe 2010 Product #26895 (In Stock)
-
-
You’ll be hearing a lot about Barolo’s 2010 vintage – we heard the region’s winemakers call it “classic”, “excellent”, even “historic” in quality and style. And certainly what was a very fine everyday Nebbiolo in 2008 and 2009 takes a big step up in 2010. Ripeness is in line 2009, but there’s more purity and precision to the ripe blackberry and cherry fruit and elegant, almost silky, tannins. Very tasty from first sip, this just gets better with air and will be even better on day two (if you don’t finish the bottle right away!)
"Damilano’s 2010 Nebbiolo d’Alba Marghe is a pretty wine laced with sweet red cherries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which come together in a gracious, medium-bodied personality that is quite appealing. This is a lovely effort from Damilano."Wine Advocate 88 points
- Pecchenino Dolcetto Di Dogliani San Luigi 2011 Product #26246 (In Stock)
-
-
Another fine vintage for this rock-solid Dolectto that sings with pizza, pasta, and grilled fish. It's racy and taught with intense tangy raspberry and wild cherry aromas and flavors and just a touch of licorice. Solid grip on the finish where a hint of herb tea shows through. Not much comes into the US (less than 500 cases), so grab it while you can!
- Orsolani Erbaluce La Rustia 2011 Product #26829 (In Stock)
-
-
When you think of Piemonte, red wines come to mind. But, here in the bed of an ancient glacial lake just north of Turin, "Gigi" Orsolani sets the benchmark for brilliant, bright, white wines made from the anchient Erbaluce grape. It's a high acid grape that seems to do best when grown at moderate yields on old-fashioned pergolas and fermented clean and dry in stainless steel. Gigi's "La Rustia" Erbaluce opens with aromatics of orchard fruits, wildflowers, and honey and then fills your mouth with ripe fruit and refreshing mountain herbs. Bright and mouthwatering, this is rich enough to just sip but outstanding with cheeses and seafood.
- Valdinera Roero Arneis 2012 Product #27073 (In Stock)
-
-
The Careglio family makes this Arneis in Roero, near Alba in the heart of Piemonte. Their 2012 Arneis is a beauty, our favorite in the store! Lovely aromas and flavors of ripe peach and nectarine plus tart green apple and a pretty note of anise running throughout. Ripe enough for a hint of honey to show in the middle, but with wonderfully refreshing acidity and a crisp, dry, finish.
- Matteo Correggia Roero Arneis White 2011 Product #25794 (In Stock)
-
-
The new release of one of Piemonte's most reliable Arneis - three straight WA 90 or 91 point scores! The 2011 harks back to the 2008 in style with loads of white peach, almond, smoke and floral aromas and flavors and a refreshing, peach and citrus-inflected, finish. A natural with fresh fish or shrimp and also outstanding with complex Asian flavors. Excellent!
- Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba 2011 Product #26727 (In Stock)
-
-
An excellent Dolcetto, gutsy and earthy with bold black fruit (plum, cherry) and accents of roasted mean, lavender, and flowers. Well structured, but easy drinking, too.
"This red bursts with juicy cherry, raspberry and a touch of black pepper. Reveals some serious tannins underneath for support. Drink now through 2015.”Wine Spectator 89 points
- Ferrando Canavese Rosso La Torrazza 2010 Product #25689 (In Stock)
-
-
We're not going to sugarcoat it - this wine isn't for everyone. But if you want to try something fantastically authentic and more than a little wild, it could just be for you! Luigi Ferrando farms vines in the ridiculously difficult Carema DOC, about 2 hours North of Barolo in the foothills of the Alps. While he's more famous for his White Label and Black Label Carema Nebbiolos, we've fallen in love with this exotic, befuddling, blend of about 65% Nebbiolo, 30% Barbera, and the balance the local Neretta grape, all vinified in stainless steel.
"Wild" is the word I keep coming back to. The winemaking is clearly "wild" - natural yeasts, minimal intervention, a touch of oxidization and maybe even a little volatile acidity. The results, though, are wildly satisfying. You'll find bold, complex, aromatics of licorice, violets, black fruits and camphor with a touch of apple skin. Explosive in your mouth, with loads of wild berry (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry) fruit but also licorice, earth, spice and nettle flower. Fills up your mouth with flavor and delivers a big punch of earthy complexity on the juicy, wild, finish. Light, velvety, tannins complement the bright acidity to keep everything fresh and food friendly.
Every sip's a new adventure here, and it wouldn't surprise me if every bottle has a slightly different story to tell. Open one up and see what you find! - Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne 2010 Product #26467 (In Stock)
-
-
Always one of the very best values in top quality Barbera, Vietti's Barbera d'Asti sings in the fine 2010 vintage. Bold aromas and flavors of black cherry, bitter chocolate, and a hint of balsamic in a wine that's creamy in the middle and brisk on the finish. Versatile at table, this works with everything from pizza to grilled sausages or chicken.
- Luigi Baudana Chardonnay Langhe 2011 Product #26999 (In Stock)
-
-
Now that Barolo's Vajra family owns Luigi Baudana, expect what was already fine quality to get even better. Case in point is this small production Chardonnay from Serralunga. Bright and juicy, this marries crisp apple Chardonnay fruit with a dash of Sauvignon Blanc citrus (about 10% of the vines here are actually SB). Aromatic and rich, but with fine mineral and acidic cut, this is a fun wine to sip or enjoy with any lighter foods.
- Monchiero Carbone Barbera d'Alba Pelisa 2010 Product #27153 (In Stock)
-
-
Here's a zingy, fresh, Barbera that's loaded with fresh flower and sour cherry flavors and aromas. Bright and juicy with great energy all the way to the finish, where rose petal and black berry notes linger. Great pizza or pasta red and fine with a light chill, too.
"This wine's blue fruit gains depth and complexity from a touch of Brett. It's savory rather than directly fruity, a wine for pork braised with juniper."Wine & Spirits 91 points
- Vietti Arneis 2011 Product #25704 (In Stock)
-
-
The grapes are selected from vineyards located in the middle of the Roero area, in Santo Stefano Roero. There is no malolactic fermentation which preserves acidity and freshness.Pale sunshine yellow color with fresh floral, citrus and melon aromas with hints of almonds. An unoaked, dry, medium bodied white wine with crisp acidity, the Arneis is well-balanced, elegant wine with good complexity and a lingering finish.
- Vajra Barbera d'Alba 2010 Product #26913 (In Stock)
-
-
While the rating is a tad lower than deserved, the description is right on. A delicious, juicy, bottle of Barbera for sipping or table.
"The 2010 Barbera d’Alba is an attractive, mid-weight wine laced with sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices. It is best enjoyed over the next few years, while the fruit retains its freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014."Wine Advocate 89 points
- Vajra Langhe Rosso PN Q497 (Pinot Noir) 2009 Product #26326 (In Stock)
-
-
Yes, it's a Pinot Noir from Italy, but think "Gevrey Chambertin meets Sta. Rita Hills" and you'll be better prepared for the nectar in this funky bottle from "traditionalist" Aldo Vajra. The wine comes from the top of Bricco di Vergne, just a touch too high up for Nebbiolo to ripen. Recognizing that most Barolo-lovers view Pinot Noir as a reference-point grape, in 1999 Aldo decided to plant a few acres of Pinot up here to see what would happen.
The results will blow you away. The scents and flavors veer back-and-forth between Burgundian structure and minerality and California juicy fruit and spice. Loads of crunchy ripe raspberry fruit over moist black earth, mushroom and leather with more ripe red fruit welling up from underneath. Firm and focused, this is for the table but will delight any Pinot lover with salmon, duck, or mushrooms.
