Ramos Pinto Ruby Port Product #28028 (In Stock)
Ramos Pinto Ruby Port Ramos Pinto Ruby Port

A delicious and fun Ruby port made from younger vines of Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca and aged 3 years in big wooden wine vats called "balseiros". Fresh and fruit-filled with generous notes of crushed raspberry, blackberry, and sweet licorice and dark chocolate.  Very juicy and fresh, and perhaps too easy to drink by itself.  But, try it with Stilton, nuts, or chocolate cake - Yum!

First, yes - this is a full 750ml bottle!  It's also a fascinating take on white Port.  Because the white wine aged in wood for 8 years, this drinks like a fantastically vibrant, youthful, tawney Port.  Full of dried apricot and raisin fruit and lightly caramelized walnut and almond flavors, it's lightly sweet and super long on the palate.  Delicous!

Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2009 Product #30245 (In Stock)
Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2009 Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2009

From the estate the created the LBV style comes a true "baby Vintage Port" - made from the same grapes, grown in the estate's own vineyard, trod by food, but given 2 extra years in barrel to deliver perfect enjoyment on release.  Very much in the Quinta do Noval style, with masses of dark plum, blackberry, and black raspberry fruit accented by a touch of bitter chocolate that are lifted by impeccable acidity and firm, almost crisp, tannins.  A dose of melted licorice emerges on the long, juicy finish.  Yummy.

Here's a rock-solid, wood-aged, tawny port that gives many 10 year (and some 20 year!) tawny's a run for their money!  Lots of spice to go with the cherry and wild berry fruit and accents of toasted nut and caramel.  Cinnamon and a bit of wild herb add complexity on the mellow finish. A nice value.

Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Product #30550 (In Stock)
Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year Maynard's Port Tawny 20 Year

A great example of what is perhaps the most classic style of “wood aged” or “Tawny” Port.  Winemaker Alvaro van Zeller, formerly winemaker at Quinta do Noval, blends this from Port lots that have aged in barrel about 20 years on average.  Plenty of richness and depth here but also a lively note of burnt orange peel and even a touch of fresh red berry.  A delicious value!

"Maynard’s is a brand from Alvaro van Zeller of Barão de Vilar. This 20-year-old is lush in its sweetness, with candied orange peel scents and ripe strawberry flavors that evaporate into a warm finish, lasting on scents of glazed chestnuts. A simple and delicious Tawny."Wine & Spirits 90 points

"The 20 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 109 grams per liter of residual sugar. A nice step up on the 10 Year Old Maynard's, also reviewed, this adds some weight, but more importantly, concentration of flavor--those old, classic Tawny nuances. Very pleasing, yet easy to drink, this is a charming 20 that should be available at a nice price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Product #7247 (In Stock)
Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port Dow's 10 Year Tawny Port

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.

Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004 Product #27905 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004 Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004

The Barros family made their name in the Deuro during the 20th Century before selling the brand and focusing their energies on dry wines at Quinta Dona Matilde.  But, Filippe Barros and family aren’t quite ready to give up Port just yet, and they’ve tapped their broad range of contacts to create this brilliant 9 year-old beauty.

A lovely amber color with shimmering gold and rose highlights.  Big, lush, aromas of caramelized nuts, toffee, orange peel, and dried fruits lead to deep flavors of more toffee, toasted pecan, blood orange, dried redcurrant, and more.  Although it’s richly textured and weighty, a beam of brilliant acidity runs through the wine, giving freshness and a dry, very lightly tannic, finish.  This will thrill any fan of 10 year Tawny Port, matching that style’s freshness and fruit character and adding on more subtlety and complexity.

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24683 (In Stock)
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

Usually my personal favorite of the line-up (although 2007 Fonseca is pretty impressive!), the 2009 Taylor Fladgate delivers the Bordeaux-like elegance and class it's known for. On the nose black fruit with notes of raspberry and plum and hints of graphite and cedar. The flavors stay black with currant and cherry appearing plus dark licorice root, apple skin, and more graphite. The deep flavors stay over top of the firm, grippy, mouth-coating tannins that keep everything focused and almost elegant (if such a big wine can be elegant). Love it.

"Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark."Wine Advocate 95 points

Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011 Product #27907 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011 Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011

The Barros family knows a thing or two about Vintage Port, with family founder Manoel Moreira de Barros starting the top-notch Barros estate in the early 1900s.  Quinta Dona Matilde was already highly respected when Barros acquired it in 1925, although it was equally famous for being one of the most difficult to farm vineyards in the Douro Valley.  Dona Matilde passed out of the family with the sale of the entire Barros group in 2006, but less than a year later Manoel Moreira’s grandson, Manuel Angelo Barros, was able to buy it back and return the Barros family to the Port and fine wine business.

Many of you have loved the family’s 2007 Vintage Port when we’ve offered it in the past, but importer Jonas Gustafsson and Filippe Barros agree with me that the 2011 is a substantial step up in quality and sophistication.  The wine opens with lovely aromas of dried blackcurrant and raisin with a touch of leafy tobacco, wet stone minerality, and vanilla spice.  The aromas carry through on the rich palate where nutty, spicy, undertones emerge and the sense of minerality gets stronger.  As you’d hope for in a young Vintage Port, there’s very nice grip to the firm tannins and plenty of juicy, refreshing, acids to keep everything fresh and focused. The chewy tannins don’t get in the way of the long finish where the minerality and spice notes really shine.  Try this now with walnuts and Stilton cheese or cellar it for as long as you’d like to.

Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24682 (In Stock)
Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

If Croft is the Aussie Shiraz of the line, then Fonseca is the Napa Cabernet. The story here is all about power - powerful aromatics, powerful palate, powerful tannins. Big aromas feature dark black currant and plum accented by notes of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee with citrus and menthol overtones. In the mouth, firm and packed with muscular black fruit, dark chocolate, and licorice root flavors. As the velvet cloaked tannins well up on the finish, a beautiful floral note emerges as well. This probably isn't as fine as the 2007, but it's outstanding nonetheless!

"The Fonseca 2009 has a very ripe sweet prune and fig-tinged bouquet that is very precocious. Touches of smoke, raisin and dark plum begin to emerge with time, though it needs to evolve a little more cohesion. The palate is full-bodied with saturated tannins, luscious dark berried fruit, touches of pomegranate, fig and dates that lead to a gently grippy, persistent finish."Wine Advocate 93 points

Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2011 Product #27566 (In Stock)
Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2011 Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2011

Beautiful stuff to cellar, but hard to resist right now.

"Deep, saturated ruby. Tight, high-pitched aromas of black fruits, minerals, spices, printer's ink and licorice, complicated by nutty and earthy nuances. Juicy, savory and youthfully imploded; not hugely opulent or sweet but a wine of great density and class, showing a pliant texture and no rough edges. This seemed even more intense after I swallowed it, showing a palate-drenching quality with no weightiness. Doesn't have quite the dimension or floral complexity of the Nacional but a wine of great finesse, and built for decades of life."International Wine Cellar 96 points

"The 2011 Quinta do Noval has wonderful precision on the nose with blackberry, cassis, intriguing flinty notes and a whiff of smoke. It might not possess the power of the Nacional but it has freshness to spare. That comes through on the beautifully composed palate, which is underpinned by fine tannins that lend it a silky smooth mouthfeel. There is real intensity here, but it is very controlled with superb minerality on the finish. Excellent."Wine Advocate 94-96 points

Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 1982 Product #27906 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 1982 Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 1982

You’ve only got a little while to grab some of this stunning, 30 year-old Port, because there are only 2 cases to go around – and it’s taking all of my willpower not to take it all home myself! A Tawny-style port, all from the 1982 vintage, that aged in barrel until being bottled in late 2013.  The dominant theme here is caramel coated walnut with variations ranging from candied orange peel to crystalized rose petal, sugar-dusted dried currant, rich toffee, sweet spice and more.  Every sip rings in a new tune.  Even with all the richness, this glides across your palate weightlessly and the sweet, nutty, finish clings in your mouth endlessly.  Amazing wine to share (or hoard for yourself!).

Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Product #27202 (In Stock)
Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Grahams Vintage 2011 Port

A classic and classy Port with good structure and plenty of length. A bit more sophisticated than Dow if not quite as powerful.

"The 2011 Graham’s comes from the five quintas that have been the source for many years (Malvedos, Tua, Vila Velha, das Lages and Vale de Malhadas). It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousao and 23% mixture of very old vines. It has a more “serious” bouquet compared to the Dow, with beguiling scents of blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and cloves. Straight-laced, very well-defined and compelling, the palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and supremely well-judged acidity. It is utterly harmonious, with a pure core of ripe black cherries, damson, marmalade, clove and spices, and the finish lingers long in the mouth."Wine Advocate 95-97 points

"Offers a decadently fruity aroma, with peppery accents to the cherry, raspberry and dark currant flavors that are lithe and juicy. Grippy tannins grace the mocha- and chocolate-infused finish. Best from 2025 through 2055."Wine Spectator 96 points

Maynard's Port Colheita 1962 Maynard's Port Colheita 1962

After declaring 1960 a vintage year and knowing that 1963 would be a general declaration, too, most Port houses did not make vintage Port in 1962.  This single-vintage tawny benefits, delivering masses of dried fruit, chocolate, toffee, spice, and toasted nut aromas and flavors.  Coats your palate with a big, rich, texture, and leaves caramel, chocolate, and nut flavors lingering.

Sometimes called, “The Ladies’ Vintage,” 1950 gave fresh, elegant, and very pure wines and was a “declared” vintage for many Port houses and shippers.  While there's certainly elegance here, there's also plenty of "umph" to the sweet and savory complexity of cured tobacco, orange peel, warm stone, fig, date, and dried plum aromas and flavors.  Brisk on the finish, a wine to really savor.

The 1947 vintage was all about balance – plenty of rich, ripe, fruit, aromas of flowers and tobacco, and plenty of acid/tannin structure. Maynard's Port Colheita 1934 Product #30549 (In Stock)
Maynard's Port Colheita 1934 Maynard's Port Colheita 1934

A limited treasure.

"The 1934 Colheita Port (Maynard's) is a blend of 25% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz, 15% Tinta Amarela, 10% Tinta Barroca and 30% of traditional grape varieties (Sousão, Bastardo, Rufete, Sousão, Tinta Francisca, among others); coming in at 154 grams per liter of residual sugar. It is one of many fine 1934s I've had. It's a happy trend. This powerhouse is initially all about its power and it has quite a lot. I always recommend drinking Tawnies a bit cool, but double underline that here. Concentrated and complex, it isn't just about preening in its power, though it adds some sweetness on the finish and becomes increasingly complex and flavorful as it calms down a bit. Overall, it's rather stunning. Since the 80th birthday celebrations are over, you may as well sit it down and knock it back. It's pretty fine."Wine Advocate 96 points
