Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28440 (In Stock)
Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Priorat Negre 2010

Priorat tends to be a massive, intense, and cellar-worthy wine that needs time in cellar or big food to shine.  So, the 2010 Billo Negre is a very special treat – a supple, open, blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers plenty of classic Priorat character in a “drink me now” style.  Generous aromas of black plums, blackberry, warm stones and a touch of savory herb waft from the glass.  In the mouth the fruit turns more Grenache-like with raspberry and red plum joining the cassis and blue/black fruits and a touch of luscious milk chocolate coming up on the end.  It’s full of flavor and nicely concentrated, but stays wonderfully fresh and pure on the dark berry, chocolate, and warm stone finish. The soft, fine-grained, tannins give this more than enough heft to pair with pork tenderloin or lamb loin chops, but it’s pretty darn tasty all by itself, too.  A stellar value from rocky, dry, remote, Priorat.

Celler Cecilio Negre Priorat 2009 Product #25693 (In Stock)
Celler Cecilio Negre Priorat 2009 Celler Cecilio Negre Priorat 2009

Always rich and complex, Negre has just a touch more volume, intensity, and power in the warm 2009 vintage.  There’s plenty of generous fruit and spice here, but it’s the stony mineral character that makes it special.  Drink it now with roasted or grilled meat while a few bottles gain more complexity and definition in cellar for a decade.

“Celler Cecilio is the oldest registered winery in Priorat. The 2009 Negre is the same blend as the 2008 (50% Garnacha, 30% Carinena, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) and received the identical elevage (fermented with native yeasts and aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak). Reflecting the better vintage, it offers up a racy bouquet of cherry blossoms, incense, black cherry, black raspberry, and lavender. More structured and concentrated than the 2008, it will benefit from 1-2 years of additional bottle age and provide enjoyment through 2019.”Wine Advocate 91 points

Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Priorato 2011 Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Priorato 2011

Another great release for this 3-time 92 point (Tanzer) Priorat classic. Very similar to the power house 2009, with deep aromas of cherry, blackberry, flowers and mineral and full-bodied, fleshy, black fruit, licorice and hot stone flavors.  Rich and very long with more than enough firm minerality to support the lush, opulent, fruit and an attractive black fruit, licorice, tobacco finish.

En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2012 Product #28133 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2012 En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2012

The 2012 ENV Garnaxta Blanca is, flat out, the best 100% Grenache Blanc I’ve ever tasted.  It’s wildly complex and chameleon-like, with the aromas and flavors changing constantly over the course of a meal.  At the core are ripe fruits like grilled pineapple, passion fruit, spicy pear, and tangy peach.  Fresh, exotic, floral notes show on the nose and flavors like thyme flower, dried honey, honeysuckle, tarragon, and fennel frond/anise weave in and out with each sip.  The texture is simply lovely, with plenty of creamy richness balanced by brisk citric acids and plenty of salty mineral accents.  The wild ride of constantly shifting flavors ends with a mouthwatering, lingering, almost savory finish that draws you back again and again.  A brilliant wine to enjoy with any dish dressed with a citrusy sauce or to sip with seafood tapas.

Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28441 (In Stock)
Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010

An outstanding example of what happens when a talented young winemaker - Blai Ferré i Just – works fruit from old vines – 80+ year-old Garnacha Peluda – in a fine vintage like 2010.  First, the utterly compelling aromas:  savory soy and herb-rubbed roasted meat notes intermingle with scents of crushed black raspberry, black plum, spice, vanilla, and warm stones.  In the mouth, there’s an exciting interplay between the wine’s size and power vs. it’s silky texture and almost Pinot-like purity and poise.  The perfectly ripe “Hairy Grenache” and minerally Carignan (20%) combine to deliver a uniquely Priorat flavor profile of inky blackberry, boysenberry, lavender, soy, and roasted meats with a lovely note of sweet spice and crushed slate minerality.   The dusty mineral that peaked out of the aromas and flavors comes to the fore with a bang on the finish where crushed hot slate and firm, precise, tannin complement black raspberry, ink, and spice flavors that sail on and on and on.  A glorious, perfectly poised, Priorat to drink now with air and roasted meats or to cellar for 10-15 years.  This is the real deal, folks – don’t miss it!

It's hard to find words to explain just how good this unusual white Priorat is.  Sylvia Puig has created a complex, exotic, dry white that will blow your mind at table. Complex aromas of mineral driven spiced white peach and peppered lemon zest float out of the glass. Delicious round flavors of yellow pear, white raisin and almonds. The finish is pretty much endless.  Yes, it's really worth the price.

Zowie.  That's about the only reaction I can offer to tasting this again last week.  Silvia Puig's Priorat "garage" white very nearly literally explodes in the glass with layers and layers of exotic fruit - passion fruit, star fruit, mango - and a completely captivating layer of crushed fennel frond.  Chalk and smoked stone notes give even more complexity to this rich, but vibrant, and very rare white.  Just 353 bottles made.

Petite winemaker Silvia Puig once again delivers a brilliant pairing of monstrous structure with striking purity of fruit and focus in her 2009 flagship Priorat.  Aromas and flavors of sweet red and dark berry fruit with notes of warm slate, spice, and a touch of black tea.  The bright acidity makes your mouth water, lifts the flavors, and creates striking delineation in this brilliant, intense, red. For the cellar or big food.

Another brilliant wine from Silvia Puig, and drinking beautifully right now!

"Youthful purple color. Red- and blackcurrant on the nose, with suave incense, cocoa and floral qualities. Tightly wound on entry but gains flesh and sweetness in the middle palate, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and silky texture. Nicely focused, low-fat wine with very good back-end lift and finishing minerality. The tannins are nicely hidden by the fresh fruit. Much more about finesse than power, and ready to drink."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Celler Cecilio L'espill Priorat 2003 Product #23588 (In Stock)
Celler Cecilio L'espill Priorat 2003 Celler Cecilio L'espill Priorat 2003

Celler Cecilio is based in Gratallops, in the heart of Priorat. They are a family business that has been dedicated to the wine production since 1942 when the firm was first founded by Cecilio Vicent, the father of the present owner, August Vicent. Their vineyards, which are planted on terraces of steep slopes typical from this area, total of 8 hectares, of which 3 hectares are Garnacha, 3 hectares Cabernet Sauvignon and 2 hectares Carinena.

The estate's flagship wine from the 2003 vintage is a stunner.  Certainly ripe, there's a big burst of blueberry and dark black cherry fruit here.  But, there's also plenty of classic smoky slate and herb Priorat character as well.  Great wine for rich food.

En Numeros Vermells Priorat Garnatxa Negre 2011 En Numeros Vermells Priorat Garnatxa Negre 2011

Silvia Puig made just 219 bottles (not cases!) of this 100% Garnatxa Negra red that explodes with dark, dusky, red fruit and fantastic minerality - more of a mineral component, in fact, than I've ever seen in Grenache before.  The luscious red fruit and warm slate aromas get complexity from a rich earthy undertone and firm tannins provide support.  Enjoy this now with bold foods or wait a few years.

En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2012 Product #28386 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2012 En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2012

This is one of the two or three most exciting wines we'll bring you all year.  Winemaker Silvia Puig is best known for her award-winning work at Priorat's Vinedos de Ithaca.  For the past few vintages, though, she's been making ultra-small lots of wine in her garage from select old vine sites across the region. When importer Jonas Gustafsson showed us the 2011 Classic Priorat last year, we snapped up (and quickly sold through) every bottle we could get.  And, we immeidately sent out a plea to Silvia for more of the new vintage.

Here it is.  Silvia made just 540 bottles - not cases, bottles! - of this luxurious blend of Garnacha Negre and Garnacha Peluda (“Hairy Grenache”) plus Syrah and Carignan, all aged in new Berthomieu Ermitage barrels (the best French oak money can buy) until Silvia decides it's ready to bottle.  The aromas suggest a top vintage of Clos Mogador - super-ripe raspberry, dark chocolate, exotic flowers, black licorice, and North African spice show in the inky, intense, nose.   In the mouth, it's dark and intense with black raspberry, black plum, licorice, chocolate, and Christmas pudding flavors lifted by a note of juicy blueberry from the Carignan and Syrah.  Still very supple and poised, with a fine minerality and chewy, ripe, tannins under the blue/black fruited finish that turns floral at the very end.

This is simply stunning stuff, and anyone who loves Priorat or the very, very, best of Chateauneuf-du-Pape should stock up to enjoy it now with a little air or even more over the next 15+ years. The price is rock solid for the quality.  But, even though we purchased 45% of Silvia's  total production (and about half the magnums), there's not much to go around.  Grab it now.

Magnum!  Silvia Puig's 100% Carinena from the steep, rocky, vineyards of Priorat, is a blockbuster.  The most mineral and intensely structured of her 4 "garage" wines, this is densely packed with blackberry and black raspberry fruit, hot stones, roasted strawberries and fresh rosemary and lavender notes.  A big wine but very mineral and firmly tannic, this will be great with paella or lamb.
