Priorat tends to be a massive, intense, and cellar-worthy wine that needs time in cellar or big food to shine.  So, the 2010 Billo Negre is a very special treat – a supple, open, blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers plenty of classic Priorat character in a “drink me now” style.  Generous aromas of black plums, blackberry, warm stones and a touch of savory herb waft from the glass.  In the mouth the fruit turns more Grenache-like with raspberry and red plum joining the cassis and blue/black fruits and a touch of luscious milk chocolate coming up on the end.  It’s full of flavor and nicely concentrated, but stays wonderfully fresh and pure on the dark berry, chocolate, and warm stone finish. The soft, fine-grained, tannins give this more than enough heft to pair with pork tenderloin or lamb loin chops, but it’s pretty darn tasty all by itself, too.  A stellar value from rocky, dry, remote, Priorat.

“AiAiAi” is the kind of thing you say with a smile when something surprising happens, and tasting a young Priorat this plump, accessible, satisfying and delicious at prices like these is certainly worth an exclamation and a smile!  Silvia Puig’s newest wine from the ENV project is wonderfully fun, but anything but simple.  It’s a blend of Garnacha (about half), Carignan (about 40%) and dashes of Syrah and Merlot aged in barrel and tank.  And, from first sniff and sip through shaking the last drops from the bottle, it’s pure joy.

The aromas are festive, with dark blue/black fruit – blueberry, blackberry, raspberry – accented by notes of wet slate, crushed mint and cocoa.  The flavors lay down more of the dark but fresh berry fruit and mint flavors with layers and layers of cocoa, fresh earth, and licorice accents. Pop and pour if you like it  more creamy, decant if you want more layers, or just leave the recorked bottle on the counter overnight (as I did!) to get maximum fruit and spice.  A great, warming, bottle of festive red to drink now with Holiday feasts or anytime over the next 5 years.  AiAiAi indeed!

Very similar to the power house 2009, with deep aromas of cherry, blackberry, flowers and mineral and full-bodied, fleshy, black fruit, licorice and hot stone flavors.  Rich and very long with more than enough firm minerality to support the lush, opulent, fruit and an attractive black fruit, licorice, tobacco finish.

1,115 bottles made, 576 imported.  Before I tasted this, I would have said Silvia Puig makes some of the very best Garnatxa Blanca - white Grenache - in the world.  After tasting her 2014, all I can say is that this is the best example I've ever tasted and I'm absolutely at a loss to imagine a better one.  In part, the fresh, pure, 2014 vintage is at work here, but also Silvia's decision to ferment the wine in both 500 liter French oak and clay amphora before aging in steel.  Here, more or less verbatim, is what I wrote when Jonas first poured it for me:

"I love this.  More drive and precision and minerality than 2013 without any loss of fruit or generosity. Clarity.  So fresh and clean and utterly seductive.  Long and pure with pineapple, peach and honey and brilliant intensity.  So much flavor and freshness.  Minerality.  This is so very, very, delicious."

It's hard to find words to explain just how good this unusual white Priorat is.  Sylvia Puig has created a complex, exotic, dry white that will blow your mind at table. Complex aromas of mineral driven spiced white peach and peppered lemon zest float out of the glass. Delicious round flavors of yellow pear, white raisin and almonds. The finish is pretty much endless.  Yes, it's really worth the price.

While the “Classic Priorat” represents Silvia’s best overall bend in the tiny En Numeros Vermells “cellar” (really a garage), the Garnatxa Carinyena cuvees (or blends) represent just these two classic Priorat grapes.  Cuvee #1 is the main blend (with a whopping 761 bottles made), and it’s a tricky devil to get your arms around!

In some ways, Cuvee #1 is the best behaved of the three ENV reds, but don't let the initial quiet fool you - there's a wild child hiding out here!  I love how glassy smooth this is on first sip before the ripe tannin, hot slate mineral notes, and richly textured tannins gradually build on the long, layered, finish.  The fruit flavors are fresher here than in the Classic - peak of the season blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry and more - but coat your palate with sneaky length.  With air, the palate length grows and more classic Priorat dark fruit and mineral flavors emerge, but everything stays composed and even elegant until the powerful, chewy, finish.  Drink this right now with a lean piece of beef (and an hour of air), but do save some for 5-10 years of cellar time when this beauty will kick off its sensible shoes and lead you on a wild dance of flavor and fun!

1,256 bottles made, 564 imported.  Silvia intends her Black Label cuvee to be rounder, more supple, and easier to appreciate young than the more structured Classic wine.  In 2013, it’s 70% Garnatxa (both Negre and Peluda, aka “Hairy Grenache”) and 30% Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

Rich, plush, and seductive, this is showing more Grenache character now – dark strawberry and black raspberry – with accents of licorice and spice.  I suspect the blueberry/blackberry notes of Carignan will emerge over time.  Already, there’s plenty of Priorat’s distinctive slate-like minerality to help balance the rich, sun-warmed, fruit and a level of freshness and purity that’s rare in such a big, intense, wines.  The finish is warming and rich with big tannins that give an initial refreshing bite before melting away beautifully.  This will improve in cellar for much longer than you’d expect – 10-15 years, I think – although I doubt many will be able to resist that long.

The Classic Priorat was the first wine we ever tried from Silvia Puig’s “garage winery” label, En Numeros Vermells, and this 2012 will show you exactly why we’ve grabbed pretty much all we could over the past two years.  It’s a luxurious blend of Garnacha Negre and Garnacha Peluda (“Hairy Grenache”) plus Syrah and Carignan, all aged in new Berthomieu Ermitage barrels (the best French oak money can buy).  Since it first arrived in May, it’s just gotten better and better.

The aromas are even more bold and rich now, with notes of macerated berries, black cherry, melted licorice, dark chocolate, and exotic spice.  With a little air, the fruit freshens and suggestions of roasted meat, crushed herb, and tropical floral notes emerge.  In the mouth it’s dark and meaty with blue/black fruit (from the Carignan and Syrah) gaining depth and freshness in the glass, lifted by slate-like minerality and juicy, refreshing, acids.  The texture is gorgeous, at once silky and muscular, with powerful tannins providing support and dark fruit, iron ore minerality, bitter chocolate, and spice notes lingering on.  It’s all still a little primary, but you can enjoy it right now with lamb or savory pork roast or cellar it for 15 years or so.  Just 540 bottles made and a bit more than 100 available.

715 bottles made, 384 imported.  As in 2011 and 2012, Silvia’s “Classic” Priorat is, well, “Classic.”  A blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  It’s very young now and still a little shy on the nose and compacted on the palate, although the intensity, balance, and velvety texture are all easy to appreciate now.  My note from first tasting with Jonas:

“Dark and spicy fruit, long and rich, amazing power and then amazing finesse.  A “wow wine” with loads of dark, rich, fruit, powerful tannins, and a generous helping of Priorat graphite and slate.  Shockingly supple and sophisticated for its size.  What terrior (sense of place) is.  All in balance.”  Give this 2 or 3 years and enjoy for 20.

No point in overselling this one, because Silvia made only 389 bottles and Jonas only got 192 (and both he and I have kept some back for ourselves).  “Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919.  The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat.  Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.

The wine is rich and long and astonishing, not so much for its intensity of blue/black fruit, chocolate and spice, which you’d expect from such old vines growing in a place like this, as it is for the amazing freshness.  At a technical level, a wine this big (labeled 15.5% and probably more than that) with fairly little measurable acidity.  So how it is that you experience such brightness and lift to the super-ripe fruit and a mouthwatering, almost savory, finish with no perceptible heat?  Silvia and Jonas speculate that the intense minerality of the soil and freshening winds that sweep through the vineyard are responsible.  For me, I think it’s magic – Silvia Puig Priorat magic.

This is one of the two or three most exciting wines we'll bring you all year - now in magnum for even more fun.  Winemaker Silvia Puig is best known for her award-winning work at Priorat's Vinedos de Ithaca.  For the past few vintages, though, she's been making ultra-small lots of wine in her garage from select old vine sites across the region. When importer Jonas Gustafsson showed us the 2011 Classic Priorat last year, we snapped up (and quickly sold through) every bottle we could get.  And, we immeidately sent out a plea to Silvia for more of the new vintage.

Here it is.  Silvia made just 540 bottles - not cases, bottles! - of this luxurious blend of Garnacha Negre and Garnacha Peluda (“Hairy Grenache”) plus Syrah and Carignan, all aged in new Berthomieu Ermitage barrels (the best French oak money can buy) until Silvia decides it's ready to bottle.  The aromas suggest a top vintage of Clos Mogador - super-ripe raspberry, dark chocolate, exotic flowers, black licorice, and North African spice show in the inky, intense, nose.   In the mouth, it's dark and intense with black raspberry, black plum, licorice, chocolate, and Christmas pudding flavors lifted by a note of juicy blueberry from the Carignan and Syrah.  Still very supple and poised, with a fine minerality and chewy, ripe, tannins under the blue/black fruited finish that turns floral at the very end.

This is simply stunning stuff, and anyone who loves Priorat or the very, very, best of Chateauneuf-du-Pape should stock up to enjoy it now with a little air or even more over the next 15+ years. The price is rock solid for the quality.  But, even though we purchased 45% of Silvia's  total production (and about half the magnums), there's not much to go around.  Grab it now.
