Alain Jaume Cotes Du Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2013 Product #29575 (In Stock)
Alain Jaume Cotes Du Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2013 Alain Jaume Cotes Du Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2013

Les Gelinottes vineyard lies at the foot of towering Mount Ventoux, where Rhone sunshine and warmth is balanced by a nightly stream of cool air flowing down the mountainside.  It’s equal parts Grenache and Syrah, harvested ripe and fermented cool in stainless steel tanks.  Give it a swirl and you’ll love the bold, lush, aromas of purple fruits – plums, blueberries – with a touch of baked strawberry and smoked stone.  On the palate there’s plenty of exuberant raspberry, blackberry, and red plum fruit and more earthy/stony accents.  For all the fruit, this is juicy, fresh and dry (rather than sweet or roasted) and finishes with crisp tannins and a mouthwatering plum/sour cherry acidity.  A great sipper and even better match for any casual meal.  A red hot value!

“Copious aromas of strawberries, black cherries and raspberries jump from the glass of this simple but fruity, savory, medium-bodied red with no hard edges. Consume it over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 86 points

Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013 Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013

We don't really know what is in this white Rhone field blend, but it's easy enough to recognize how delicious it is!  Peach and apricot stone fruit take center stage with something aromatic riding on top (Viognier?) and a snap of citrus (Sauvignon?) on the bright finish. At once rich and fresh, it's more delicious and refreshing than most $15 white Rhones and much longer on the lingering finish.

Andre Brunel Grenache VDP 2012 Product #29394 (In Stock)
Andre Brunel Grenache VDP 2012 Andre Brunel Grenache VDP 2012

Here’s a big mouthful of easy-to-love Rhone red wine at a very attractive price. Brunel purchases Grenache (90%) and Carignan from vineyards to the North of Orange (mostly Cotes du Rhone, some outside the region).  The grapes are fully destemmed and raised in tank to let all of the juicy, ripe, fruit shine through.  Classic Rhone red aromas of ripe strawberries and dark raspberries jump from the glass and lead to soft, wide-open, flavors of red raspberry, cherry, and a touch of “garigue” – the resinous note similar to the wild rosemary and thyme that grow here.  Clean and juicy on the fruit-filled finish, this is easy to enjoy solo and will handle a wide range of foods at table.  Just delicious and pretty irresistible at the price!

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2014 Product #29683 (In Stock)

A rich and bright Cotes du Rhone blanc from 60% Viognier, 10% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne, and 10% Bourboulenc done all in tank.  The aromas are nice and fresh with Viognier's white flower notes accented by fresh peach and apricot scents.  In the mouth, it's richly textured but stays fresh and not at all heavy as it delivers peach and green apricot fruit with just a touch of mineralty on the layered finish.  A lovely sipper and great with freshwater fish!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Product #29127 (In Stock)

A change in style here that goes beyond the new label.  In 2012, Philippe used just Grenache and Syrah to make this rich, earth, and very traditionally-styled Cotes du Rhone.  Blackberry and black cherry fruit rise up underneath smoked stone, licorice root, and tarry base notes.  Round and fleshy in texture, this finishes with bright acids and ripe, easygoing, tannins.  For lamb or something with olives!

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 Product #28737 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010

Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element." Wine Spectator 89 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Product #28936 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expesive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality. In the few months since this lovely white Rhone sold out, it's gotten even prettier on the nose, with generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clemintine and crushed chalk.

Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses or baked fish, or even with savory turkey and stuffing!  And, it will age beautifully (if you can keep your hands off it long enough)!

Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2012 Product #28957 (In Stock)
Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2012 Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2012

As Wine Advocate said when they reviewed this from barrel, it tastes "like a mini-Chateauneuf du Pape."

"A knock-out value is the estate 2012 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins, a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. Always one of the vintage's finest Côtes du Rhônes, it comes from a large, morsellated estate property north of Châteauneuf du Pape. At this quality level, it is amazing that the Jaume family produces nearly 10,000 cases. The 2012, from a far superior vintage than 2013, boasts a dark ruby/plum color as well as a sweet perfume of kirsch, lavender, new saddle leather, pepper, blackcurrants and licorice. Medium-bodied with lovely density and richness, light tannin and a savory mouthfeel, this beauty can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

A 100% Grenache from this family-owned, organic estate with holdings in an area of unique terroir in the Southern Rhone known as "Le Plan de Dieu," whose soil is full of 'galets,' the smooth, round stones characteristic of the region. While the aromas have that classic herbal garrigue note, on the palate the fruit is bold, satisfying, and ripe flavors of blackberries and luciously ripe raspberries.

Dom De La Janasse Cotes Du Rhone Reserve 2011 Dom De La Janasse Cotes Du Rhone Reserve 2011

There’s a lot going on in this complex  Cotes du Rhone, with a texture and shapely feel that you  normally have to pay much more for.  From one of Chateauneuf’s – if not France’s – very best estates, this is ready to drink but will improve for 2-3 years more.

“55% grenache, 25% syrah, 10% carignan, 5% cinsault and 5% mourvedre. Deep ruby. Fresh dark berries and lavender on the spice-accented nose and in the mouth. Fleshy and open-knit, with slow-building sweetness and smooth tannins shaping the finish. Quite suave and ready to drink.”International Wine Cellar 89 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Dom De Fondreche Cotes Du Ventoux Rouge Nadal 2011 Product #29427 (In Stock)
Dom De Fondreche Cotes Du Ventoux Rouge Nadal 2011 Dom De Fondreche Cotes Du Ventoux Rouge Nadal 2011

Here’s what happens when talent, skill, and very hard work are applied to a region most thought was “below average” in potential at best.  Sebastian Vincente farms his vines organically (certified from 2013) to maximize the health of his soils, sustainability of his farm, and purity of his fruit. He ferments slow and long (up to 28 days) with gentle pump-overs to extract the best flavor and structure from the ripe grapes.  Syrah and Mourvedre soften in cask while Grenache ages on its fine lees in concrete eggs, allowing a natural, gentle, stirring of the lees for greater richness and depth.  Throughout, a maniacal commitment to cleanliness and care in the cellar allows for minimal sulfur additions and fantastically intense aromas and flavors of fruit and site to emerge.

"A blend of 45% Syrah, 45% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre, (Syrah and Mourvedre aged in barrel, the Grenache in concrete tank) exhibits gorgeously pure notes of creme de cassis, currants, licorice, sweet oak and chocolate that flow to a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered profile on the palate. Upfront, texture and full-flavored, with mouth filling amounts of fruit, it is a knockout effort that will deliver the goods for over a decade."Wine Advocate 93 points

Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011 Product #29514 (In Stock)
Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011 Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011

This is old-school Gigondas from 50 year-old (average) Grenache (80%), Mourvedre (15%) and Syrah (5%) grown on classic Gigondas soils – a mixed salad of marly-calcareous soils, sandy clay sub-soils, and scattered scree washed down from the limestone outcroppings further up the hill.  The Grenache and Syrah were fermented and aged in vat and the Mourvedre in old oak casks.

The result – a very fine, classically, styled Gigondas that you can drink right now or cellar for 4-6 years if you like.  Big, bold, aromas of roasted strawberry, macerated raspberry, and dark black cherry fruit with a touch of garrigue – black olive tapenade, sappy herb, and lavender – that gets bolder and richer with air.  It’s a big, mouthfilling wine – we are in the Rhone, after all – that pumps out rich flavors of dark red berry and cherry and plenty of garrigue.  A stony, almost salty, mineral streak that just screams “Gigondas” runs right down the middle of the palate and sails on through the long, finely tannic, finish.  The combination of richness and freshness are just lovely, and I suspect (like me) you’ll find the bottle empty all too soon.

Dom La Bouissiere Gigondas La Font De Tonin 2010 Dom La Bouissiere Gigondas La Font De Tonin 2010

Super-concentrated and rich, this needs a little air now and will be best after 2014.

“79% Grenache and 21% Mourvedre. Bright purple. Highly aromatic nose combines black raspberry, cherry and cola. Bright, intense and sharply focused, with intense dark berry, spice and cola flavors firmed by brisk acidity. Shows increasing breadth and sweetness--and a sexy floral nuance--as it opens up with air. Builds power toward the back, finishing with silky tannins and assertive spiciness.”International Wine Cellar 93 points

“A sensational effort, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2010 Gigondas La Font du Tonin is a deeper, richer, more structured and backward effort revealing full body as well as loads of incense, flower, blueberry, black raspberry and bouquet garni notes. Very perfumed with stunning purity and overall equilibrium, this big, well-balanced, intriguing Gigondas should drink well for 12-15+ years.”Wine Advocate 92-94 points
