Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Product #27994 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE

Half Bottle!  Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element."Wine Spectator 89 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010 Product #27135 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  Philippe makes a few different tanks of this blend of Grenache, Carignon, Syrah, Counoise and Cinsault, and then importer Olivier Daubresse chooses the very best for us.

This year’s release shows off all the character and quality of the outstanding 2010 Rhone vintage. Intense aromas of inky crushed black raspberry, blackberry, cassis, and black licorice get extra complexity from notes of earthy lavender, violet and chocolate.  The palate is medium-bodied, focused, and fully flavored with layers of squid ink, tangy raspberry, black cherry, and tary, licorice-like, accents. The flavors expand with more blue/black fruit, fresh herb, and cracked black pepper in the back, lingering over fine mineral and sweet tannin on the finish.  This will age beautifully for 5+ years, but I don’t know you’d resist drinking it tonight.

Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003 Product #27985 (In Stock)
Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003 Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003

From the extreme southern end of the Rhone Valley, just on the border of the Gard in Languedoc, this is a powerful blend of Grenache (about 60%) plus Syrah and Carignan.  You'd expect 10 year-old Cotes du Rhone to be fading, but this one is just hitting its stride.  Plenty of super-ripe raspberry and cherry fruit and muscular tannins (as you'd expect from the hot 2003 harvest) but also exotic notes of sandlewood, olive, black pepper, and spice. Still fine acidity here and that plus the very firm, but mouthwateringly ripe, tannins make this a Gigondas for Chateauneuf substitute at table with rich stews, roasts, or cheeses.

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012 Product #28373 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets. In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

A refreshing, aromatic white from a classic producer.

"65% viognier and 15% roussanne, with marsanne and tiny bits of clairette and bourboulenc. Pale yellow. Fresh peach and white flowers on the spice-accented nose; really showing its viognier component today. Fleshy orchard and pit fruit flavors are firmed by a tangy orange zest quality picking up a smoky quality with air. Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Product #28936 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expesive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality. In the few months since this lovely white Rhone sold out, it's gotten even prettier on the nose, with generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clemintine and crushed chalk.

Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses or baked fish, or even with savory turkey and stuffing!  And, it will age beautifully (if you can keep your hands off it long enough)!

"Tasting like a mini-Chateauneuf du Pape, with ripe mulled blackberries, spice, toast, licorice and hints of flowers, the Alain Jaume 2012 Cotes du Rhone Les Champauvins is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that spent 12 months mostly in concrete tank. A 100% Grenache from this family-owned, organic estate with holdings in an area of unique terroir in the Southern Rhone known as "Le Plan de Dieu," whose soil is full of 'galets,' the smooth, round stones characteristic of the region. While the aromas have that classic herbal garrigue note, on the palate the fruit is bold, satisfying, and ripe flavors of blackberries and luciously ripe raspberries.

From one of the great estates of Gigondas, now run by the Aline Bonfils and turning out wines of lovely grace to go with natural Rhone power.  Their Cotes du Rhone is a stunner, just about the best in this earthy, garrigue-laced style I've tried in years.  Earthy black raspberry and warm, stony, minerality form the core of this silky textured wine with a firm, grippy, back.  The finish adds a note of sun-warmed lavender to go with the dark fruit and fresh herb and goes on and on and on.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Product #28306 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009

Simply the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!   A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) all aged in neutral oak perfectly express the terroir of Philippe’s rocky vineyards and the vintage’s warmth and ripeness. Big aromas of black raspberry, licorice, fresh earth, and roasted meat carry through on the mouth coating palate where hints of lavender and violet emerge.  The focused, generous, flavors push through the explosive finish where firm tannins provide support and raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, seared beef, and licorice flavors go on and on.

With age this  just gets better and better - a magnum of 2005 Philippe served us last year resembled and was flat out better than the 2005 Beaucastel on the same table.  Grab a case or so of regular bottles, but treat yourself to a few magnums, too.  An utterly magnificent bottle of gutsy Rhone red now and for 15+ years to come.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Clos Du Caillou Cotes Du Rhone Bouquet Des Garrigues 2012 Clos Du Caillou Cotes Du Rhone Bouquet Des Garrigues 2012

Always one of our very favorite Cotes du Rhones, and in 2012 a wine that outshines many much more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape!  It’s a blend of 85% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre, all aged in tank and neutral barrel.  Grenache raspberry and sweet cherry aromas and flavors take center stage, but there’s plenty of black olive tapenade, crushed herb, and black pepper complexity.  Very pure, very delicious.

“The 2012 Cotes du Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues is a brilliant looking tank sample. Aged all in foudre, it offers up ripe, pure notes of crushed stone, pepper and earthy notes to go with both red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and textured, with sweet tannin, it’s one serious Cotes du Rhone that will evolve for 4-7 years. Drink 2014-2021.”Wine Advocate 90-92 points
