Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2015 Product #31482 (In Stock)
Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2015 Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2015

In 2015, this happy, eager to please, Cotes du Rhone opens up with fresh aromas of blackberry, currant, cracked pepper, lavender and a hint of smoke.  On the palate it’s medium-bodied and pumps out flavors of just-picked raspberry and blackberry, cranberry, and a touch of crumbled dry herb.  It finishes with a big burst of tangy raspberry, black pepper, and red plum, mouthwatering and thirst quenching and with just enough dusty tannin to stand up to pizza, nachos, sausages, fried chicken, or the casual fun-food of your choice!

“Checking in as a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone is a floral, red and black berry, spice and sappy herb-scented effort that has medium-bodied richness, juicy acidity and a charming, quaffable style. Drink this solid, bistro styled red over the coming couple of years.”Wine Advocate 87 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2015 Product #31025 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2015 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2015

A blend of 90% Mourvedre – the earthy black grape made famous in Bandol to the south – plus 10% Grenache grown in stone covered vineyards near the Rhone village of Cairanne.  The ripe fruit is crushed and allowed to ferment on the skins long enough to get rich, deep, color and then pressed off to finish fermenting to dryness in tank.

The brilliant color is deep watermelon red with brick orange highlights.  There’s an earthy, savory, bass note to the dark cherry, ripe watermelon, and luxurious strawberry fruit aromas and flavors with plenty of classic Provençal garrigue (wild thyme, rosemary and lavender) accents.  Bigger and much more deeply flavored and textured on the palate than Grenache-dominant rosés, this has the hearty heft you normally have to go to much more expensive Bandol to find.  But a twist of orange peel and citrusy acids keep the flavors fresh and bright and the long, dry, herb and watermelon-laced finish keep you coming back for more.  Sure, it will quench your thirst nicely on a hot afternoon, but this powerful pink will really sing when you pair it with meaty grilled fish, herb-crusted lamb, or charred vegetables seasoned with a dollop of garlicy aioli.

Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Product #31175 (In Stock)
Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015

"Tire Bouchon" is the French phrase for a corkscrew, but the literal translation is better:  Cork Puller.  And you're going to pull a lot of these corks this fall and winter! This is a throw-back (in terms of both time and how you'll drink it!) red made from Grenache, Syrah, and 10% old-timey Aramon and Oeillade Noire.  While it's all grown in Adrien Roustan's Vacqueyras vineyards, the old grapes aren't allowed, so it's bottled as Vin de France.  The winemaking is pretty old school, too.  All the grapes are tossed into the vat together, covered with some dry ice, and allowed to start fermentation as they will.  10 days in the fermenter, a few months resting in tank, and then ready for you to slurp!

It's friendly from the first sniff, with open, generous, aromas of crushed black raspberries, sweet cherry, violets, and a hint of ripe black olive.  Take a sip and let the party begin!  This wine just oozes sweet, fresh, very ripe red and black cherry/berry fruit with a touch of cracked pepper, lavender and rich loamy earth for complexity.  Juicy and mouthwatering, but not at all tart, with a bit of Black Forest cake (chocolate and sweet cherry) coming up on the supple, lingering, finish.  Sure, it's going to go swell with all kinds of casual foods - burgers, hot dogs, pizza, stews - but it will shine most brightly when shared with (soon to be very happy) friends!

Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012 Product #30949 (In Stock)
Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012 Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012

IT'S BACK!!!  Xavier Vignon consults with vine growers and winemakers at some of the Rhone’s most famous estates, and he takes just a bit of his fee in the form of grapes to make outstanding wines like this one.  Grenache from 80+ year-old vines, nicely rich Syrah, and a remarkable 25% Mourvedre – very generous for a wine at this price level – are all harvested ripe, fermented cool, and aged in concrete tank to retain 100% authentic Rhone character.

"The 2012 Côtes du Rhône is another beauty by this team. Licorice, roasted herbs, pepper and plenty of sweet fruit come together in this medium to full-bodied, layered, and textured effort. Made from 60% Grenache, and Mourvedre and Syrah that saw mostly concrete tank, it’s a smoking Côtes du Rhône (and a fabulous value) to drink over the coming 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Guigal Cotes-du-rhone 2012 Product #30745 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-rhone 2012 Guigal Cotes-du-rhone 2012

As always, a tremendous Rhone value.

"Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Spicy, energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up slowly with air. Distinctly northern Rhône in personality and texture, featuring a peppery, floral-dominated finish, smooth tannins and excellent closing thrust and persistence. The quality of this bottling consistently outpaces its price and appellation, and that's especially true in this vintage."  Vinous (Reynolds) 91 points

"A wine that should be on the market by the time you read this, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone from Guigal is a smokin’ value that offers classic southern Rhone notes of peppery herbs, smoked earth and almost chocolatey dark fruits. Medium plus-bodied, concentrated, with both fine tannin and bright acidity, it will deliver the good for at least 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Just another example of why 2015 is so exciting in the Southern Rhone.  Here's a Cotes du Rhone that - as Wine Advocate said about the 2013 - drinks "like a mini-Gigondas."  It's big and ripe and full-bodied with generous raspberry, strawberry and blackberry fruit, a touch of dried spice and a hint of graphite. Finishes rich and smooth with fine-grained tannins.  Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvedre.

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Product #31080 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets.

In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013 Product #30281 (In Stock)
Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013 Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013

From a terrific Rhone vineyard unjustly left out of the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, this is a wine Robert Parker has called "a baby Chateauneuf du Pape," "a poor person's Chateauneuf," and "a serious effort that could easily be mistaken for a Chateauneuf du Pape." In 2013, it delivers loads of rich, ripe, Rhonish fruit - kirsch, cherry, raspberry - along with classic accents of lavender, thyme, black pepper, and black olive. Unlike most Chateauneuf, it's delicious right now and simply a steal at this price.

"The 2013 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins continues to impress, and for a difficult vintage, it has tons of charm. Offering lots of earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, underbrush and loam earth, it’s medium-bodied, nicely textured and has solid length. Made from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that had the Grenache aged in stainless steel and the Syrah and Mourvedre in barrel, drink it anytime over the coming 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Product #31415 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme

Jean-Marie Royer’s everyday wine is a blend of fruit from vineyards just outside of Chateauneuf and a site inside the Chateauneuf boundary that has a bit too much clay to qualify for the Chateauneuf AOC.  He should really be allowed to call this a Cotes du Rhone, but the rules say he must label it as "Vin de Table" and not make any note on where it's from or vintage (although, as you can see, he cheats a bit there).

In France’s great, great, 2015 vintage, La Petit Roy isn’t very “Petit.”  In fact, it’s a pretty big and burly thing with deep base notes of black raspberry and roasted strawberry plus lively accents of crushed herb, lavender, black pepper and spice.  The grapes are mainly Grenache with seasoning splashes of Syrah (for depth) and Alicante (for herbal complexity and color).  Very Provençal and pretty enough to serve at a party but with more than enough heft to pair with leftover leg of lamb.  Fantastic value for a “baby CdP.”

Dom Philippe Plantevin CdR Villages La Daurelle 2011 Product #30941 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin CdR Villages La Daurelle 2011 Dom Philippe Plantevin CdR Villages La Daurelle 2011

Probably the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!   A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) aged in tank (2/3) and neutral oak (1/3) that perfectly express the terroir of Philippe’s rocky vineyards and 2011’s blend of purity and ripeness. Big aromas of black raspberry, licorice, fresh earth, and roasted meat carry through on the mouth coating palate where hints of lavender and violet emerge.  The focused, generous, flavors push through the explosive finish where firm tannins provide support and raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, seared beef, and licorice flavors go on and on.

La Daurelle has been a staff and customer favorite for years, and the 2011 edition is even more captivating than usual.  It’s perfect to enjoy right now with grilled or roasted meats or most any dish showing a touch of cumin or North African spice, make sure to put some away for later, too.  Expect this to continue to improve for another decade and to give pleasure long after that.  Simply stellar wine and value here.

Dom Du Pegau Plan Pégau Rouge Lot 11-12-13 Dom Du Pegau Plan Pégau Rouge Lot 11-12-13

A crazy, very old-school, field-blend red from old vines growing outside of Chateauneuf du Pape.  20-30% each of Grenache, Syrah, and Merlot with the balance an unknown combination of Carignan, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Danlas, Alicante and Cabernet Sauvignon.  This year's release blends lots from vintages 2011, 2012 and 2013 (see the neck label) to deliver a rich, earthy, almost funky, wine with tons of chewy black pepper and a dark-fruited core.

"Aromas of musky red fruit, candied flowers, cured meat and garrigue take on a smoky mineral element in the glass. Sweet and penetrating, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors and a zesty jolt of white pepper. Shows very good intensity and fruity punch on the finish, which is shaped by silky, even tannins."  Vinous 90 points

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012

The past two vintages of this oak-aged powerhouse Syrah (92%) and Grenache (8%) blend earned 90 points from Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate.  The 2012 is better still.  It opens with simply gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch, smoke, and roasted meat - complex and seductive.  On the palate, Parker's description of the 2010 is spot on:  "It possesses unbelievable richness for a wine from this appellation, as well as loads of blackberries, black currants, acacia flowers, licorice and graphite."  One of the sexiest wines I've ever tried from Ventoux, but one that has sneaky structure and glorious freshness as well.  Ready and delicious right now and built to improve over the next 5-6 years.  A "wow" wine and stellar value.

As Wine Advocate said in their 90+ point review of the 2013 Tix Bramefan, "Readers need to put Domaine du Tix at the top of their list of new estates from Ventoux to watch out for."  The 2014 is a luxurious blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache all aged in barrel and tank for smoky, plush, richness.  It's loaded with blackberry, spiced meat, fresh herb, and cracked black pepper aromas and flavors and finishes firm and fresh.  This is delicious right now especially with lamb or pepper-crusted beef but hold some back a few years and let it really unwind.  Delicious stuff.

Dom d'Ourea Vacqueyras 2014 Product #31174 (In Stock)
Dom d'Ourea Vacqueyras 2014 Dom d'Ourea Vacqueyras 2014

Adrien Roustan created Dom d'Ourea in 2010 from his parents holdings in Vacqueyras (they'd sold grapes to others).  In this, his 5th vintage, it's pretty easy to see that he's figured out this winemaking thing!  There's a smidge of youthful reduction, so give it a brief decant.  Then get ready for a wine that explodes with rich black fruit, licorice, garrigue and more and finishes firm and fine.  Plenty of Rhone power here but also uncommon purity and grace.

"Lively aromas of fresh red berries, candied flowers and smoky minerals, complemented by a bright, peppery nuance. Juicy and nicely concentrated, offering vibrant raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. In a graceful style, with fine-grained, firming tannins sneaking in late on the very long, zesty finish."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"A sensational barrel sample that checks in near the top of the vintage, the 2014 Vacqueyras (80% Grenache and 20% Syrah) saw a traditional vinification followed by 18 months all in concrete tank. It’s a ripe, layered, naked expression of this beautiful terroir and reveals a deep ruby color as well as lots of dark fruits, licorice, Provencal herbs and crushed rock nuances. It is a mouth-filling, medium-bodied and moderately concentrated effort to drink over the coming 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 90-92 points

A benchmark Bandol, lush and rich and with enough time in bottle to really shine tonight. 70% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache with plenty of heft.

"The entry level red Bandol, the 2010 Bandol Les Restanque de Pibarnon (70% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache) is a superb effort that surpasses a number of estates’ top wines. More forward and ready to go than their traditional cuvee, it is medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with fabulous red fruits, currants, spice box and potpourri-like aromas and flavors all emerging from the glass. While the overall impression here is upfront and fruit-driven, it has good acidity and fine tannin, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve gracefully. Enjoy it over the coming 7-10 years or so."Wine Advocate 91 points

"Ripe and broad-textured, with concentrated roasted plum, dried berry and wild cherry flavors, accented by notes of paprika and white pepper. Bittersweet chocolate hints show on the dense finish. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 93 points
