Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Product #27994 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE

Half Bottle!  Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element."Wine Spectator 89 points

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Product #28132 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012

SOLD OUT NOW - But More Arrives Tuesday!

Nothing super fancy here - just a really, really, good Cotes du Rhone at a great value price to enjoy with everything from burgers to lamb chops.  About half Grenache with 30% Syrah and then equal parts Carignan and Cinsault, mostly from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s by former owner Count de Regis de Gatimel.  Most of the luscious, ripe, fruit ferments and ages in tank but part of the Syrah sees barrel to add richness and depth.

A good deal richer and darker than the very popular 2011 edition, the 2012 Segries Cotes du Rhone gushes with aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.  A winner.

"This estate has been on a qualitative hot streak for more than a decade... The 2012 Cotes du Rhone is composed of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Cinsault. It is a fruity, pedal-to-the-metal, peppery, black currant and black cherry-scented and flavored, medium-bodied Cotes du Rhone displaying hints of lavender and garrigue. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

"Full-bodied but approachable, this wine shows a slightly horsey edge on the nose, and pleasingly suede-like flavors and textures underlying the raspberry fruit. It’s a complex mélange that should likely be consumed over the next couple of years. BEST BUY!"Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Sol'Acantalys Vignerons Tavel Cotes Du Rhone 2012 Sol'Acantalys Vignerons Tavel Cotes Du Rhone 2012

While the Rhone village of Tavel is most famous for rose, there's plenty of top-notch red wine made in and around the town, too.  This comes from the local co-op, and it's the kind of easygoing Cotes du Rhone you'd find yourself sipping in any good Provencal bistro.  A light, gentle, style with black cherry, warm stone, black licorice and olive notes and a touch of lavender lingering on the fruit-filled finish.  Fine with a chill for a picnic or warmer to enjoy with anything on the grill.

Le Paradou Grenache 2011 Product #28179 (In Stock)
Le Paradou Grenache 2011 Le Paradou Grenache 2011

A project of importer Eric Solomon and Ventoux's Frederic Chaudiere, this comes from 40-60 year-old Grenache growing in high-altitude vineyards named for a 400 year-old farmhouse.  Bursting with ripe, juicy, strawberry and cherry fruit with rich accents of damp earth and cracked black pepper.  It's full in texture and flavor, but with plenty of body but also a nice sappy freshness.  A bold bistro red to enjoy with or without food.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2011 Product #27134 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2011 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2011

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expesive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality. In the few months since this lovely white Rhone sold out, it's gotten even prettier on the nose, with generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clemintine and crushed chalk.

Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses, or with grilled fish and fruit salsa.  It will age surprisingly well if you can keep your hands off it now!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010 Product #27135 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  Philippe makes a few different tanks of this blend of Grenache, Carignon, Syrah, Counoise and Cinsault, and then importer Olivier Daubresse chooses the very best for us.

This year’s release shows off all the character and quality of the outstanding 2010 Rhone vintage. Intense aromas of inky crushed black raspberry, blackberry, cassis, and black licorice get extra complexity from notes of earthy lavender, violet and chocolate.  The palate is medium-bodied, focused, and fully flavored with layers of squid ink, tangy raspberry, black cherry, and tary, licorice-like, accents. The flavors expand with more blue/black fruit, fresh herb, and cracked black pepper in the back, lingering over fine mineral and sweet tannin on the finish.  This will age beautifully for 5+ years, but I don’t know you’d resist drinking it tonight.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2013 Product #28305 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2013 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2013

If you thought Philippe’s 2012 rosé was good, just wait until you try the 2013!  A touch darker in color and one notch more concentrated and intense, but just as full of fruit and refreshment as last year.  Unusually for a rosé from this part of the Rhone valley, it’s 90% Mourvedre (made famous by Domaine Tempier and other Bandol estates) and just 10% Grenache.

Lovely dark pink in color, the generous aromas feature bright cherry, passion fruit, and wild herb scents. The texture and shape of the wine in your mouth is fantastic, starting soft and silky, exploding into palate coating flavors, and then focusing down with laser-like precision and focus on the mouthwatering finish.  You’ll find plenty of wild strawberry, passion fruit, ripe citrus, fresh herb and just a touch of earthy Mourvedre flavors running through the wine with mouthwatering watermelon, berry, pink grapefruit and mineral  notes on the long, juicy, finish.  A great solo sipper and even better with fresh salads, smoked salmon, or anything with plenty of savory herb and garlic.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006 Product #26857 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s usually the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar.  Here, the combination of a softer vintage (2006) and a half-dozen years of aging in perfect conditions delivers a big wine, but one that’s wonderfully supple and ready to enjoy.  Opens with generous aromas of dark black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice.  In the mouth, it bursts with black and red berry fruit, cracked black pepper, licorice root, mineral, and savory spice flavors.  Ripe and extracted enough to fill up your mouth, the bright acidity and still firm, but perfectly balanced, tannins provide structure and freshness.  Fruit, mineral, and black pepper flavors linger nicely, and make this a fantastic match with grilled lamb, roast pork, or any robust dish.  In the drinking window now and ready to enjoy over the next half-decade or more.

Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003 Product #27985 (In Stock)
Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003 Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003

From the extreme southern end of the Rhone Valley, just on the border of the Gard in Languedoc, this is a powerful blend of Grenache (about 60%) plus Syrah and Carignan.  You'd expect 10 year-old Cotes du Rhone to be fading, but this one is just hitting its stride.  Plenty of super-ripe raspberry and cherry fruit and muscular tannins (as you'd expect from the hot 2003 harvest) but also exotic notes of sandlewood, olive, black pepper, and spice. Still fine acidity here and that plus the very firm, but mouthwateringly ripe, tannins make this a Gigondas for Chateauneuf substitute at table with rich stews, roasts, or cheeses.

The best vintage yet for a staff favorite Cotes du Rhone.  It's a beauty - ripe, but crisp and refreshing as well.  A blend of 60% Grenache with additions of Syrah and Cinsault, this fruit-filled Rhone delivers a big mouthful of meaty red fruit in the middle and then a whip of wet slate minerality and fresh herb on the finish. Fine tannins and mouthwatering acids make it geat with any lean meat.

From one of the great estates of Gigondas, now run by the Aline Bonfils and turning out wines of lovely grace to go with natural Rhone power.  Their Cotes du Rhone is a stunner, just about the best in this earthy, garrigue-laced style I've tried in years.  Earthy black raspberry and warm, stony, minerality form the core of this silky textured wine with a firm, grippy, back.  The finish adds a note of sun-warmed lavender to go with the dark fruit and fresh herb and goes on and on and on.

As Robert Parker says, "Domaine de la Janasse is one of the great winemaking estates of not only France, but of the world."  Their white Cotes du Rhone is better than ever in the profound 2012 harvest. A blend of Grenache (55%) plus Cairette, Borboulenc, Viognier and Rousanne, it shines with fine richness, peach/appricot fruit, a bit of fresh flower, and a dry, chalky, finish.  Great marriage of richness and brisk, bright, acidity. Every bit the equal of most Chateauneuf du Pape whites that cost 3x the price.

Sweet Muscat wines made Beaumes de Venise famous, but this fine growing area in the hills just south of Gigondas turns out fine red wines as well.  Domaine de Fenouillet’s Terres Blanches cuvee shows the best of the region’s potential.  This biodynamic grower makes a natural, unfiltered wine, just packed with flavor!  It’s an absolutely delicious blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre with no oak influence at all.  Aromas and flavors feature soft, ripe, black plum and cherry fruit accented by notes of toasted almond, blackcurrant, black pepper, and a dose of fresh, moist, earth.  The Mourvedre comes out on the back-palate and long finish with notes of cigar tobacco, mushroom, and earth lingering nicely.  Soft enough to enjoy on its own, but brilliant with grilled or roasted meats and mushrooms!

Rock solid Gigondas with dark fruit and lots of garrigue, mineral and black pepper - delicious now.

"The traditionally-styled 2011 Gigondas Tradition is a blend of 72% Grenache, 23% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre and Cinsault that was aged all in foudre. It has loads of charm with notions of underbrush, pepper, saddle leather and smoked mesquite-like aromas and flavors to go with a medium-bodied, moderately concentrated, yet beautifully balanced profile on the palate. It’s a knockout value that, while I don’t think it will make old bones, should drink nicely over the coming 5-7 years or so."Wine Advocate 90 points

Perrin & Fils Gigondas La Gille 2009 Product #26471 (In Stock)
Perrin & Fils Gigondas La Gille 2009 Perrin & Fils Gigondas La Gille 2009

Plenty of ripeness here, but also lovely focus, minerality, and balance to this already accessible red.

"Vivid ruby. Ripe red fruits and lavender pastille on the highly perfumed nose. Ripe and fleshy on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and suggestions of star anise and white pepper. Shows a suave blend of richness and vivacity and finishes with excellent clarity and lingering florality. I really like this wine's balance."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"The 2009s I tasted from Perrin et Fils include the 2009 Gigondas La Gille, which has lived up to my expectations. This brilliant wine exhibits lots of fat, sumptuous red and black fruit, roasted herb, new saddle leather and licorice characteristics in a full-bodied, supple textured style. The vintage’s lower acidity and higher alcohols offer a dramatic contrast to the precise, higher acid, denser, seemingly cooler climate 2010s. Nevertheless, this is hedonism at its finest, and this cuvee should age well for a decade."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Nicely packed, with tightly wound espresso, graphite and black tea notes still harnessing the core of crushed plum, steeped black currant and charcoal. The long, smoldering finish has racy acidity. Best from 2013 through 2019."Wine Spectator 92 points

Dom La Bouissiere Gigondas La Font De Tonin 2010 Dom La Bouissiere Gigondas La Font De Tonin 2010

Super-concentrated and rich, this needs a little air now and will be best after 2014.

“79% Grenache and 21% Mourvedre. Bright purple. Highly aromatic nose combines black raspberry, cherry and cola. Bright, intense and sharply focused, with intense dark berry, spice and cola flavors firmed by brisk acidity. Shows increasing breadth and sweetness--and a sexy floral nuance--as it opens up with air. Builds power toward the back, finishing with silky tannins and assertive spiciness.”International Wine Cellar 93 points

“A sensational effort, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2010 Gigondas La Font du Tonin is a deeper, richer, more structured and backward effort revealing full body as well as loads of incense, flower, blueberry, black raspberry and bouquet garni notes. Very perfumed with stunning purity and overall equilibrium, this big, well-balanced, intriguing Gigondas should drink well for 12-15+ years.”Wine Advocate 92-94 points
