Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Product #28255 (In Stock)
Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012

The Recorba Ribera del Duero Tinto is an example of what happens when you get Tempranillo all the way ripe and then let it show it’s colors without any wood at all.  Big aromas and flavors of red plum, black cherry and raspberry take center stage with accents of natural spice, warm stones, and a touch of exotic sandalwood.  Since Dave McIntyre reviewed it last November, it’s settled down and opened up, but still represents a huge “bang for the buck” Tempranillo to enjoy by itself or with pretty much anything you’d put on the grill.

Warning: This is a gateway drug that might get you hooked on the earthy Tempranillos of Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, which typically cost $20 and up. Ribera fans will want to stock up and give their credit cards a break. When I first opened this wine, it was a bit rough-and-tumble, in a good way; two evenings later, it had settled down but was still vibrant and delicious. How often can we say that about a $10 wine?”  Washington Post **1/2

Abadia De Acon Ribera Del Duero Roble 2012 Abadia De Acon Ribera Del Duero Roble 2012

Here's an outstanding value in Ribera del Duero Tempranillo, all the better for spending just a few months in barrel. Generous aromas of crushed berries, chocolate and spice lead to a rich, but vibrant, palate of plump red and black fruit with accents of cracked pepper, sandalwood, and spice.  There's a touch of orange zest bite on the finish for added complexity.  Easy drinking, great value.

Convento Oreja Ribera Del Duero Roble 2013 Product #29050 (In Stock)
Convento Oreja Ribera Del Duero Roble 2013 Convento Oreja Ribera Del Duero Roble 2013

A great value, great drinking, Ribera del Duero that's much classier than the price suggests.  100% Tempranillo aged briefly in 40% French and 60% American oak before bottling and landing here still fresh as a daisy.  Lush and rich in texture but with fine supporting acidity and tannins make this fun to sip solo and great with even big flavors at table.

"Smoky dark berries, cherry and woodsmoke on the fragrant nose. A rich, fruit-driven wine, offering pliant cassis and blackberry preserve flavors and a round, velvety texture. Delivers solid flavor impact and picks up even tannins on the finish, with the dark berry and smoke notes repeating."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2011 Product #29197 (In Stock)
Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2011 Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2011

Surprising that such a young estate (founded 2004) could deliver the best "old school" Ribera del Duero we've tried in years.  Classic Ribera Tempranillo aromas of black fruit, spice, espresso, and toasty oak.  In the mouth, there's a good dose of ripe black and dried fruit with accents of spicy oak, soy, and roasted meat.  The finish is youthfully firm today and the toasty, spicy, oak rides on top of the fruit, but it will sing with roasted meats and stews now and gain more poise over the next year.  A Jonas Gustafsson Selection - which explains a lot, we think!

Finca Villacreces Ribera Del Duero Pruno 2012 Product #29109 (In Stock)
Finca Villacreces Ribera Del Duero Pruno 2012 Finca Villacreces Ribera Del Duero Pruno 2012

"This blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon emerges from a vineyard situated adjacent to one of the famous vineyards utilized to produce Spain’s greatest red wine, Vega Sicilia. Made from relatively old vines, the 2012 Pruno is a sexy, opulent, voluptuously textured effort that spent 12 months in two-year-old French oak barrels. Reminiscent of a baby Vega Sicilia, it possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as notes of high-class, unsmoked cigar tobacco, creme de cassis, licorice, graphite and spice box. Full-bodied, deep, velvety textured, lush and heady, it is another sensational bargain from Eric Solomon."Wine Advocate 93 points

Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009 Product #28764 (In Stock)
Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009 Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009

Rock solid, drinkable, Ribera.  You can age it a bit if you like, but no need to wait for pleasure.

"Opaque ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense and cola, along with a sexy floral nuance and a touch of cracked pepper. Juicy, sweet and expansive, offering vibrant cherry and blackberry flavors and a velvety texture. Finishes with impressive clarity and lift, leaving a candied violet note behind."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The Crianzas are raised in new American oak for around 14 months and Jesus explained that the grapes were cooled to 6 degrees Centigrade for the 2009 Vina Sastre Crianza. It offers a fragrant, floral bouquet of kirsch, loganberry and cranberry, with fine definition and well-integrated oak. There is a touch of chalk dust that emerges after a few moments in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, crisp acidity and a superb citric freshness on the finish: hints of orange peel and tangerine lingering on the aftertaste. This is an understated yet paradoxically flavorsome Crianza. Drink 2013-2019."Wine Advocate 92 points

Bodegas Asenjo & Manso A & M 2006 Product #25792 (In Stock)
Bodegas Asenjo & Manso A & M 2006 Bodegas Asenjo & Manso A & M 2006

A rare “luxury cuvee” that is all about the amazing fruit and not about oaky flash, this is one of the most delicious Tempranillo-based wines I have tasted in  years.  The fruit is from the heart of the vineyard, all from vines planted by Teofilo Asenjo 80 to 100 years ago.  And, while good, the Wine Advocate review undersells the wine by a lot.  Intense, complex, aromas of dark fruit, sweet herb, and cardamom spice get deeper and more layered with air.  In the mouth intensely focused fruit and roasted meat flavors with accents of licorice and balsamic.  Firm, fine, and very long with precise tannin and mouthwatering acidity.  Drink it now with roast lamb or standing rib roast or cellar for even more complexity.  Amazing stuff.

"The flagship 2006 A & M was sourced from 100 year old vines, was fermented with native yeasts, and went through ML in barrel before spending 15 months in French oak. Deep purple in color, it offers up a liqueur-like nose of blackberry, black cherry, sandalwood, mineral, espresso, and lavender. Full-bodied on the palate with outstanding volume and density, this layered, concentrated effort borders on opulence. It has structured to go the distance and should see its 30th birthday in peak shape. Drink 2010-2035.”Wine Advocate 93+ points
