Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2013 Product #28545 (In Stock)
Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2013 Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2013

This is 100% Viura grown in selected sites across Rioja. The ripe grapes are pressed and the juice goes into all new barrels - a mixture of French and American oak and acacia - to ferment and rest for 3 months. After that, the wine moves into stainless steel to complete its maturation, retaining freshness and verve to go along with the light oak influence.

Give it a sniff, and you'll be rewarded with pretty springtime aromas of peach, pineapple, and almond blossom. Take a sip and you'll discover a round, creamy, textured wine that's bursting with zesty fruit and juicy acids. After you swallow, you'll notice the fresh flavors lingering nicely as a hint of honey and bitter almond emerge at the end. Almost too easy to drink by itself for refreshment and fun, you'll love how this enhances warm weather favorites like fresh fish, grilled mushrooms, or marinated chicken.

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Borg 2012 Product #28428 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Borg 2012 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Borg 2012

Start with "young" (20-30 years) Tempranillo vines growing naturally in rocky vineyards in Rioja Alavesa.  Hand harvest the grapes and place them in a tank - uncrushed and still on the stems - and then blanket them with CO2.  Then, once fermentation starts, winemaker Norberto Miguel puts on a breathing mask and air tank...and jumps down into the grapes!  He steps gently to break grape skins and extract color without crushing seeds or breaking stems that might add bitter tannin.  Then, as fermentation continues, he gives the wine gentle pump-overs to get more color, richness and depth still.

The last vintage of this beauty was called "Ona", but Norberto Miguel had to change the name to Borg this release.  It's still one of the most versatile, juicy, and absolutely delicious Tempranillo wines in the store.  The 2012 is even more juicy and refreshing than the 2011.  Loads of fresh cherry, red plum and blackberry fruit with accents of wood smoke, spice, and earth - all from the soil, because there's no oak on this wine at all!  The fine tannins give it enough support for food, but you can chill it and sip it solo, too!

Cune Rioja Rosado 2013 Product #29488 (In Stock)
Cune Rioja Rosado 2013 Cune Rioja Rosado 2013

From classic Rioja producer Cune comes this delicious 100% Tempranillo rose.  With plenty of ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit, it's a little gutsier than the paler roses from the south of France, although it still has a nice dry, crisp finish.  A great rose to pair with grilled salmon or sausages all summer long.

Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Crianza 2011 Product #29520 (In Stock)
Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Crianza 2011 Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Crianza 2011

Lovely, lithe, and very fresh Rioja.

"95% tempranillo and 5% garnacha. Opaque ruby. High-pitched aromas of red berries and candied rose, with a peppery accent building in the glass. Zesty and sharply focused, offering nervy redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that gain sweetness and depth with air. In a bright, elegant, almost pinot-like style, finishing with very good clarity and light tannins."  Vinous 90 points

Muga Rioja Reserva 2010 Product #29019 (In Stock)
Muga Rioja Reserva 2010 Muga Rioja Reserva 2010

Yup, another great vintage for this wine that splits the difference between "modern" and "traditional" styles.

"(70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, 7% mazuelo and 3% graciano; fermented in large oak vats and aged for 24 months in oak casks of varying size): Opaque ruby. Musky, deeply pitched aromas of ripe red fruit, game, lavender and roasted coffee. Shows very good spicy lift in the mouth, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and an undercurrent of smoky minerals. Finishes with excellent focus and thrust; the slowly building tannins meld smoothly with the wine's dense fruit. Age this wine for at least another five years, with confidence."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Lindes de Remelluri Rioja Vinedos de San Vicente 2010 Product #28765 (In Stock)
Lindes de Remelluri Rioja Vinedos de San Vicente 2010 Lindes de Remelluri Rioja Vinedos de San Vicente 2010

A modern style Rioja, ripe and lush, but with plenty of structure and good balance. A fine choice for top-end steak or rich roasts or stews.

"Heady aromas of boysenberry, cassis, fennel and pipe tobacco, with a sexy vanilla undertone. Lush, velvety and sweet in the mouth, with sexy flavors of black and blue fruit preserves, licorice and floral pastilles. A fleshy, powerful but shockingly energetic Rioja, with supple tannins framing a long, sweet finish."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2010 Lindes de Remelluri Vinedos de San Vicente is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Malvasia purchased from a number of vine growers from San Vicente de la Sonsierra. In the past these grapes were blended with the ones grown on the Remelluri estate vineyards. The 2010 is very aromatic, more fruit forward, with some grainy tannins, slightly more rustic than the one produced with grapes purchased in Labastida. The oak is perfectly folded into the nose and palate of the wine, which remains very fresh and approachable. 60,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2015-2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2007 Product #28588 (In Stock)
Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2007 Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2007

A very “Gran” Gran Reserva indeed, this is proof that Rioja’s traditional long oak aging of its top reds doesn’t need to deliver thin, wan, overoaked wines that you kind of wish had been bottled years earlier. As Wine Advocate said in reviewing the 95 point 2004 edition, “It has an irresistible bouquet that is so pure and sensual you do not know whether to drink it or stroke it.”  Aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, and black cherry take center stage with just the right accent of spice, chocolate and tobacco.  The palate is wonderfully pure and focused with more red fruit, licorice, chocolate and spice flavors that coat your palate.  The fruit turns fresh and bright – tangy raspberry, pomegranate and cranberry – on the finish where fine-grained, mellow, tannins provide support.  Focused, firm, and long, this is already delicious and will sing with anything from rich grilled fish to steak or lamb now and will grow in cellar for another 10+ years.  Fantastic stuff.

"(95% tempranillo and 5% graciano; from vines that are reportedly all over 50 years old): Deep ruby. Heady aromas of mulberry, raspberry, vanilla and exotic spices, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Supple, sweet and focused, offering sappy red and dark berry flavors and suggestions of licorice and mocha. Closes sweet and long, with no obvious tannins and an echo of dark berries."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Wonderfully pure and focused with sweet fruit and a nice tang.

"Intensely perfumed aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit, vanilla and dried flowers. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering vibrant red and dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. The floral quality comes back strong on the very long, smoke-tinged finish, which features a suave spicecake quality and even tannins."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Cune Imperial Rioja Reserva 2008 Product #29490 (In Stock)
Cune Imperial Rioja Reserva 2008 Cune Imperial Rioja Reserva 2008

"The 2008 Imperial Reserva is my favorite of the three Imperial Reservas that I tasted together as it has the perfect balance between ripeness, acidity and tannins, in a wine that is eminently elegant, but will require some time in bottle to gain complexity. The fruit leans more towards the red varieties (raspberries and strawberries), it is very spicy but the wood is almost fully integrated. Very balanced palate, with high-toned flavors that make it vibrant. Drink 2015-2021.

CVNE seems to have improved its basic range of wines in the last few years, which is very good news, as they seem to be readily available and with attractive prices. The Imperial Gran Reserva is back at the helm of quality."

Vina Real Rioja Gran Reserva 2006 Product #29491 (In Stock)
Vina Real Rioja Gran Reserva 2006 Vina Real Rioja Gran Reserva 2006

"The 2006 Reserva has a more gamey, animally nose than the 2005 with dark berries and earthy notes combining to intriguing effect. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweeter entry than the 2005. It is underpinned by fine tannins and a crescendo of ripe black cherry, wild strawberry and garrigue notes that inform the long, graceful finish. It is still unresolved but it shows great promise. Drink now-2025.

I have been a big fan of Vina Real for many years. A spine-tingling 1962 encountered during my trip attested to the longevity of these somehow, effortless, classic Rioja wines. Both the Crianza and Reserva are a blend of 90% Tempranillo augmented by Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo."Wine Advocate 91 points

Packs an extra punch of fruit to go with the traditional earthy, tangy, elements.  Light, but intensely flavored.

"Smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berry preserves, dried cherry, pipe tobacco, vanilla and incense. Stains the palate with intense blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. Packs a serious punch but comes off as lithe and precise, finishing with strong cut and length and silky tannins that come up slowly."International Wine Cellar 93 points
