Martin Ray Chardonnay Russian River 2014 Product #29985 (In Stock)
Martin Ray Chardonnay Russian River 2014 Martin Ray Chardonnay Russian River 2014

Here's a truly luxurious Russian River Chardonnay made with all the care and high quality you'd expect in a $40 wine - but for much, much, less!  The fruit came from three excellent Russian River vineyards - Ricci, Bisordi and Pellini - plus some estate fruit from the excellent sub-region of Green Valley.  In 2014, drought gave small clusters of intense fruit that ripened to perfection.  About 30% of the fruit was fermented and aged in French oak for complexity and spice with the rest in tank to retain vivid, fresh.

The 2013 edition was a 90 pointer from Wine Enthusiast, and this is better still.  It opens with classic Russian River Chard aromas of crisp green apple, orange blossom, lemon zest, ripe Asian pear, and a touch of vanilla bean.  Then a juicy mouthful of apple, pear, and lemon flavors accented by notes of buttered popcorn and toasty caramel.  The buttered toast, green apple, ripe pear and salty caramel flavors linger nicely as a mouthwatering but easy finish provides enough support for food.  A great Chardonnay for parties and sipping that's classy enough to serve with serious meals.

Zeitgeist Trousseau Gris Russian River 2014 Product #29712 (In Stock)
Zeitgeist Trousseau Gris Russian River 2014 Zeitgeist Trousseau Gris Russian River 2014

A crazy cool wine to sip by itself, with salads, fish, or even Asian foods.  Fresh aromas of gingered apple and apricot get accents of chamomile, sugar snap pea and white flowers.  Then generous stone fruit and spice on the palate with a touch of anise underneath.  It’s rich and round in texture with a lovely buttered nut quality before the juicy acids and salty mineral flavors well up and drive a long, fresh, crisp finish.  Rare, unusual, and seriously delicious.

"From old vines within the Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard in the heart of the appellation, this is a rare bottling of a variety more commonly found in the Jura, but acquiring new fans in California, especially made at this high level. Creamy and round, it remains fresh on the palate in a lemon-swirled minerality that provides a savory edge of ginger." Wine Enthusiast 93 points

A fine follow-up to the 90 point 2012, with more cut, precision and definition.  Rich aromas of pear, yellow apple, apricot and smoke lead to bold flavors of baked pear/apple lifted by a dash of tangerine.  The smoky oak and fresh butter notes add complexity and depth without overwhelming the fruit, and the wine finishes clean, rich, buttery, and long.  Delicious to sip and flexible with food.

Small Vines Russian River Pinot Noir Estate Cuvee 2012 Product #28220 (In Stock)
Small Vines Russian River Pinot Noir Estate Cuvee 2012 Small Vines Russian River Pinot Noir Estate Cuvee 2012

Paul thinks that this could be his best Pinot Noir yet, and it’s the first time that he’s used fruit from all of his estate vineyards in a single bottling.  As in 2011, Baranoff provides more than half the fruit, but 25% comes from super low vigor Old Mill site in Green Valley.  About 12% comes from the MK Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and the rest from the Barlow Homestead vineyard, where Paul and Kathryn live.  Paul farms all of these sites organically now, with no chemical fertilizers or herbicides – but lots and lots of handwork.  The best barrels from each vineyard were selected for this 383 case cuvee.

Not yet reviewed by the press, I’m inclined to agree that this is Paul’s best Russian River Pinot Noir ever.  A little swirling reveals layered aromas of black and Bing cherry, licorice root, red flowers, and fresh turned earth.  On the palate, the wine has much more richness and concentration than the 13.6% alcohol suggests, with pure and intense flavors of sweet cherry, Asian 5 spice, cola nut, and a touch of blackberry and vanilla.  The tannins are very elegant and fine grained, but provide ample support for food or cellaring, and the sour cherry, spice, and earth flavors linger on and on.  Lovely, luscious, stuff.

"(made with 27% whole clusters, native yeasts and one-third new oak): Brilliant red. Sexy aromas of raspberry liqueur, potpourri and smoky minerals, with an Asian spice flourish adding complexity. On the palate, vibrant red fruit and floral pastille flavors put on weight with air while maintaining vivacity. This silky, approachable pinot noir finishes with excellent clarity and smooth, well-knit tannins that contribute shape."International Wine Cellar 91 points
