A fresh, juicy, easy-drinking take on Zinfandel's Italian cousin. A tasty value!

"The 2012 Primitivo offers a steady and simple interpretation of one of Puglia's most important red grapes. The wine flows over the palate with smooth intensity, imparting plenty of fresh fruit, licorice and roasted nut along the way. Drying mineral notes give the wine a better sense of focus and balance. Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011 Product #29643 (In Stock)

Aglianico is southern Italy's great red grape, but you can make a fun, festive, fine value wine from it, too!  Basilicata Aglianico is a bit riper and softer than in Campagnia, and Tenuta I Gelsi captures a remarkable amount of fresh fruit and juicy texture in this all tank, young vines, red.  Cherry and blackberry fruit are framed by notes of leather, mineral, licorice and bitter chocolate.  Fresh and juicy with grippy (but ripe) tannins, the plummy fruit and structure suggest a lighter version of California's Petite Sirah. A fine cookout or salami (or even pizza) red

Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2013 Product #29640 (In Stock)

The most important grape from Calabria in the"arch" of Italy's heel, Galioppo surprises with the freshness and vigor from such a hot, dry, region.  Bright aromas of cherries, strawberries, and perfumed flowers lead to a juicy-textured mouthful of crunchy red fruit with just a hint of red licorice.  A fine snap of tannin and acid makes this refreshing red fun to sip and even better with casual foods. Think Schiava with a bit more heft or Gringnolino with softer tannins and you'll have the general idea.

Cantine Farro Le Cigliate Campi Flegrei Doc 2012 Product #29259 (In Stock)
Cantine Farro Le Cigliate Campi Flegrei Doc 2012 Cantine Farro Le Cigliate Campi Flegrei Doc 2012

Winemaker Michele Farro makes this blockbuster Falanghina from the “Cigliate” – older, ungrafted, vines that grow right on the edge of the volcanic craters of the Phlegraean Fields.  He harvests this concentrated fruit up to two weeks later than his other whites, giving the wine extra body, richness, and power.  The aromas and flavors here are complex and deep, with strong herbal/tobacco notes under the dusky stone fruit and exotic spice components.  The wine’s texture is fantastic, creamy and a bit reminiscent of white Chateauneuf du Pape, with hints of peach, coconut and mountain laurel emerging with air.

For all its richness and complexity, this finishes clean and bright, making it a fantastic choice for a richer summer sipper.  But, it will be even better with a mixed grill of calamari and shellfish, halibut with olives and capers, or soft, ripe, cheeses.
