Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2012 Product #29743 (In Stock)

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Perticaia Umbria Rosso 2013 Product #29784 (In Stock)
Perticaia Umbria Rosso 2013 Perticaia Umbria Rosso 2013

I just love this style of Italian red, a bottle that’s gusty enough to play well with grilled beef or lamb and fresh and vibrant enough to sing with salami, antipasti, or even pizza.  It’s from the relatively young estate of Perticaia, created as a "retirement" gig by old Tuscan hand Guido Guardigli.  He launched this new estate with his family in land-locked Umbria, naming it for the dialect word for "plow" - and just as the plow helped Umbria to prosperity by transforming from a grazing to farming region, Guido hopes his estate will "open the earth" to exciting new wines.

His entry-level red is a joy, fresh and fruity with deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, juicy raspberry, and a dash of sweet spice.  Sangiovese (80%) provides the core of fruit and a zesty structure while Colorino and Merlot (10% each) soften up the finish and add top- and base-notes, respectively.  A great pizza/salami/grilled sausage wine that gets richer and more intensely fruited with air or brighter and fresher with a light chill.  Much more interesting than 90% of wine labeled “Chianti” at this price!

Perticaia Montefalco Rosso 2012 Product #29862 (In Stock)
Perticaia Montefalco Rosso 2012 Perticaia Montefalco Rosso 2012

A good Montefalco Rosso is at once familiar and highly distinctive.  The “familiar” elements are Sangiovese’s dark black cherry fruit, whiff of berry blossom, and touch of fresh cured leather.  The “distinctive” elements come from Umbria’s unique Sagrantino grape:  powerful, firm, deeply intense, and layered with exotic spice.  This is more than a “good” Montefalco – it’s a terrific one.

Guido Guardigli crafts his Monteflacot Rosso from 70% Sangiovese and 15% Colorino – both classic Chianti grapes – plus 15% Sagrantino.  It’s young and wound up tight a bit now, but already serving up complex, sophisticated, aromas of black raspberry puree, currant, and the kind of fine leather used to bind expensive first edition books wafts from the glass.  On the palate, it stays intense and powerful, with real drive and energy.  Raspberry blossom, crushed berries, blackcurrant, and red plum flavors get drive from bright acids and definition from fine-grained, gritty, Sangrantino tannins.  Finishes firm and mouthwatering with berry blossom and leather notes lingering.  It’s serious and intense enough to pair with something fancy like roasted veal, but you’d be darn happy to drink it with sausage pizza that had a touch of truffle oil drizzled on top.

Paolo Bea Montefalco Vigna San Valentino 2009 Product #29004 (In Stock)
Paolo Bea Montefalco Vigna San Valentino 2009 Paolo Bea Montefalco Vigna San Valentino 2009

A stunning blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Montepulciano, all from a 50-year old vineyard.  After a 30 day maceration, the wine ages 3 years in tank and then in bottle until it's ready to drink.  It's a touch more ripe than the 2008 edition, with loads of plump black and Bing cherry accented by fresh earth , licorice, mocha, almond olive and earth  notes.  There's a slight tang of volatile acidity - normal in these organic, no-sulfur, wines - and then loads of dark fruit on the juicy, firm finish.  Less than 400 cases made in 2009 - which is why we only have two of them!

Perticaia Sagrantino Di Montefalco 2010 Product #29863 (In Stock)
Perticaia Sagrantino Di Montefalco 2010 Perticaia Sagrantino Di Montefalco 2010

Tre Bicchieri!  The estate's top wine and a majestic introduction to one of Italy's most distinctive red grapes.  It takes 3 years to make this - 12 months in barrel, 12 months in tank, and then 12 more months in bottle before release - and it will just get more powerful, rich, and impressive for years and years to come.

If you've never had a 100% Sagrantino before, then this is a stupendous - if very intense - introduction to one of Italy's most impressive grapes. The first impression is all about power and almost painful intensity.  Give it some attention and time in the glass, though, and you'll see this peel back one layer of complex deliciousness after another.  Classic Sagrantino black cherry fruit forms the core with the grape's exotic spice - clove, nutmeg, cinnamon - emerging and gaining more and more strength with air and hints of leather and scorched earth emerge as well.  On the finish, the fruit keeps on pushing through over top of masses of tannin that give this a dry, powerful, finish that somehow avoids harshness.  Brush a well marbled steak or lamb chop with red wine glaze and grill over grape cuttings if you want to be authentic.  And do let some rest and get richer and more mellow over the next 10-20 years if you can.
