Corte Adami Valpolicella Superiore 2010 Product #26892 (In Stock)
Corte Adami Valpolicella Superiore 2010 Corte Adami Valpolicella Superiore 2010

An "old school" Valpolicella from a fairly young estate (2004).  A blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes from 40 year-old vines done all in tank, this features ripe black cherry fruit flavors and aromas with a dash of fresh, resiny, pine and herb. With a little air, the fruit gets darker and spicier and a lovely dried tobacco note emerges.  Juicy and lightly tannic, this will work extremely well at table.

Begali Valpolicella Ripasso Classico La Cigia 2011 Product #29637 (In Stock)
Begali Valpolicella Ripasso Classico La Cigia 2011 Begali Valpolicella Ripasso Classico La Cigia 2011

A stunning Ripasso, very much in line with the wines of the most famous producers in the region at a fraction of the cost.  It’s explosively aromatic, with layer upon layer of dried fruit, sweaty saddle, clove, herb, and more lifted by Ripasso’s characteristic hint of volatility.  Drinking very nicely now, although you can certainly enjoy this over the next few years.

"If you can name but two producers in Valpolicella (I’m betting they are Dal Forno and Quintarelli), it’s now time to add a third: Lorenzo Begali. Lorenzo and his children Giordano and Tiliana make the most exciting wines in the region today. These are inaugural reviews (Begali has never been reviewed by The Wine Advocate). Having now tasted this beautiful collection of new releases, I am a true Begal-iever.

The 2011 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore La Cengia is exceptionally beautiful and balanced. There’s a lot going on: background tones of balsam herb, rosemary and black olive follow straightforward aromas of dried fruit and prune. A pretty touch of eucalyptus springs forth. The wine is incredibly light, buoyant and lively despite the elaborate Ripasso process. Drink 2014-2018."Wine Advocate 90 points

Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Friuli 2014 Product #29592 (In Stock)
Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Friuli 2014 Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Friuli 2014

If you think Pinot Grigio is a neutral, flavorless, watery wine – well, you just haven’t tried the new release of this long-time customer favorite!  It’s wonderfully aromatic, with notes of crisp pear, fresh apple, white flower blossom and a touch of spice jumping from the glass.  The texture is as light, crisp, and refreshing as ever, but the flavors are bold and satisfying with notes of spicy pear, juicy green apple, tangy apricot, and just a hint of almond.  The fruit flavors keep on pumping through the long, mouthwatering, finish where the pear juice and citrus flavors linger. A great all-purpose summer white to enjoy on its own or with everything from shellfish to grilled chicken.

Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2013 Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2013

Grown on the plains north of Venice, this is a rich, creamy, Grigio with lots of depth to the lightly candied pear and salty caramel flavors.  Ripe pear features prominently in the nose and on the palate, with plenty of spicy pear and nectarine fruit lingering at the end.  A powerhouse, zesty, Pinot Grigio that will sing with Thai or Indian food.

Musella Valpolicella 2012 Product #29556 (In Stock)
Musella Valpolicella 2012 Musella Valpolicella 2012

Tre Bicchieri!  With its sappy cherry/berry fruit and touch of bitter almond and lavender, Valpolicella is a great partner for sausage, cheese, and simple suppers.  Musella is one of the best in the region, and their 2012 was named on of Italy's top releases in 2015 for its ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit, leather and briar accents, and fresh, supple, finish.  Delicious!

"Hints of gumdrop, smoke and tar underscore this elegant red, with light tannins structuring the cherry, plum, spice and herb notes. Open-knit and fresh. Drink now through 2019."Wine Spectator 89 points

Zenato Rosso Veronesse Alanera 2012 Product #29463 (In Stock)
Zenato Rosso Veronesse Alanera 2012 Zenato Rosso Veronesse Alanera 2012

Like the famed Palazzo della Torre, this is made with 50% dried grapes (like Amarone) and a touch of oak.  Rich wine, great price!

"The 2012 Alanera is a new edition to the Zenato portfolio and pays tribute to the family patron who developed the estate's vineyards. the label depicts three swallows that are symbols of the three main hills that dominate this corner of Valpolicella. This IGT blend is composed of 55% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 10% Corvinone and 10% other grapes that are aged in part in oak, and in part in stainless steel. The bouquet shows good intensity with bright layers of spice, dark fruit and prune."Wine Advocate 90 points

Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2009 Product #29466 (In Stock)
Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2009 Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2009

A Ripasso that sings with food but has the freshness and vibrancy to enjoy by itself.

"Spicy aromas of floral red cherry, quinine, pink peppercorn and fresh herbs. Enters richer and deeper than the Nicalo, with ripe red cherry and red berry flavors lifted by aromatic herbs. Finishes clean and long, but this still needs a lot of time to express itself. A very good Valpolicella Ripasso that does not aim at being a cheap Amarone knock-off but has a Valpolicella dignity all its own. From a selection of grapes from different hillside vineyards than those that give the grapes for the Nicalo."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Begali Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2011 Product #29778 (In Stock)
Begali Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2011 Begali Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2011

As Wine Advocate said in late 2013, “If you can name but two producers in Valpolicella (I’m betting they are Dal Forno and Quintarelli), it’s now time to add a third: Lorenzo Begali.”  Begali’s Amarone isn’t quite as hefty as Dal Forno and is much cleaner and less rustic than Quintarelli, but we agree that the quality-levels are very similar – even if the prices are about 80% less!

And, the 2011 is simply the best Amarone Classico Begali has ever made, even better than the Wine Advocate 93 point 2010.  Soaring aromas of dried black cherry, blueberry, and blackberry are framed by subtle notes of oak, tobacco and chocolate.  On the palate the wine is amazingly pure, clean, and fresh – even at 15.5% abv! – with layers and layers of rich fresh fruit, dried berry and raisin, crushed flower, dark chocolate, cured tobacco, and sweet spice.  Plenty of Amarone richness and power, for sure, but with impeccable balance and silkiness of texture and perfectly integrated alcohol.  The juicy, fruit and spice-filled finish sails on over ripe tannins with berry and raisin flavors lingering on and on.  Put some away to enjoy with warming winter meals but don’t hesitate to pop a bottle now to pair with ribs, brisket, or any other rich food off the grill.  A magnificent Amarone at a simply silly good price.
