Tarara Chardonnay Virginia Almost Unoaked 2012 Product #28321 (In Stock)
Tarara Chardonnay Virginia Almost Unoaked 2012 Tarara Chardonnay Virginia Almost Unoaked 2012

Clean, fresh, balanced and delicious – those are the words you keep coming back to when tasting Tarara’s 2012 “Almost Unoaked” Chardonnay.  The nicely generous aromas of lemon curd, apricot, herb and toasted hazelnut carry on through the richly textured palate, where bright apple and grainy pear notes join the show.  A touch of buttered nut comes out on the back before lemony apple and pear fruit pop on the mouthwatering finish.

The key here is perfectly ripe fruit (not a green note to be found!) and a light hand with the oak (most was raised in stainless steel rather than barrel).  There’s a lot going on here, and if you’re in the mood to pay attention, this will reward it with plenty of complexity and depth.  Or, you might want to grill some scallops or whip up some crab dip and just drink it for fun.  A terrific bottle of Chardonnay at a terrific price for Virginia or any Chardonnay growing region in the world.  Bravo!

Early Mountain Red Vine 2012 Product #28829 (In Stock)
Early Mountain Red Vine 2012 Early Mountain Red Vine 2012

Jean Case and husband Steve (of AOL fame) launched Early Mountain to showcase the best of Virginia wines.  With Paul Hobbs consulting, they're off to a great start!  This "field blend" of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon offers up exotic aromas of coffee, jasmine, dark fruit and spice.  Dark chocolate drapes over the red and black fruit on the palate before tangy cherry and cranberry comes up on the finish.  A fine drinker and excellent Virginia value!

Early Mountain Viognier 2012 Product #28617 (In Stock)
Early Mountain Viognier 2012 Early Mountain Viognier 2012

Probably Virginia's best white wine variety gets a very skilled treatment here - and, despite the small (160 case) production, a very reasonable price, too!  Nicely bold aromas of peach, apricot, honeysuckle and fruit blossoms lead to a rich, creamy, mouthful of ripe peach and apricot fruit.  The floral notes expand on the finish where a touch of ginger and squirt of lemony acidity keep things fresh and clean.

Glen Manor Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Glen Manor Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Another terrific release of what many think is the very best Sauvignon Blanc made in Virginia.  The 2013 delivers a wonderful balance between crisp acidity and ripe fruit, with opening aromas of fresh herbs and grass, some white grapefruit, and a hint of herb.  The flavors add notes of slate and smoke to the bright citrus fruit and sail on through a juicy, mouthwatering, finish.

Glen Manor T. Ruth Red Blend 2012 Glen Manor T. Ruth Red Blend 2012

One of Virginia's most decorated winemakers, Jeff White, tries something new - a "Right Bank" style Bordeaux blend to complement the former Governor's Cup winning "Left Bank" Hodder Hill.  It's a blend of 57% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon from the outstanding 2012 harvest.  Plenty of rich, plummy, blackcurrant and berry fruit to go with notes of crushed herb, smoke and bitter chocolate.  Drink it now with lamb or rich beef or age it for a few years for more complexity.

Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010 Product #26909 (In Stock)
Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010 Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010

If you look around, you’ll notice that we don’t carry a lot of Virginia wine – so, you might wonder, why do we have several selections from Glen Manor?  The answer is simple – owner/winemaker Jeff White is doing something special out near Front Royal, Virginia.  The wines are all top quality wines for their price point.  Not “top quality Virginia wines” – just “top quality” period.

The 2008 Hodder Hill single vineyard blend of Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is a great example.  The aromas are complex and forward, featuring blackberry/blueberry fruit, coffee, orange peel and spicy tobacco notes.  In the mouth it’s full-bodied and nicely concentrated, but elegant layered, too.  The texture and flavors suggest a top Washington state blend with firm casis/currant, coffee and tobacco flavors and just a touch of fresh herb.  Drinking well now and built to age 5-10 years.  Great stuff.
