St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2014 Product #31271 (In Stock)
St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2014 St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2014

Always one of the greatest values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, the 2014 is the best in years, perhaps better than the Wine Spectator 92 point 2008.  In 2014 the vineyard sources read like a who’s who of great sites:  Zenith, Vitae Spring, Temperance Hill, Freedom Hill, Momtazi Vineyard and even the legendary “Grand Cru” Shea Vineyard.  A warm fermentation and gentle pump-overs extract richness and give the wine a velvet feel.  A year in mostly used oak rounds off the edges and adds just a touch of subtle spice.

The result is a sophisticated, velvety, and layered wine that puts many more expensive bottlings to shame!  You’ll find loads of fresh cherry, dark berry, ground spice, and subtle anise aromas and generous flavors of wild berries and cherries, spice and fresh flowers.  The wine envelops your palate with deeply earthy richness, but stays light and pure and fresh through a finished laced with just-picked fruit, spice, and fine tannins.  Beautiful right now through 2021 with everything from white meats to meaty fish (salmon, tuna) and rich lentil or bean dishes.  Delicious value!

"A sensational value, this blends fruit from a half-dozen vineyards that carry the winery's vineyard designates. Soft and appealing flavors mix citrus, plum and berry in a juicy, wide open, flat out delicious bottle. The fruit is the star, although a year in 9% new French oak adds a nice touch of toast."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010 Product #30989 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010

Ernie Pink and Dena Drews craft this lovely Pinot to tell the story of their vineyard in the vintage, blending different clones and parcels from across their 35 acre site perched above Freedom Hill.  In 2010 it's beautiful with the elegance and purity of this remarkable vintage and the open sophistication that only a little time in bottle reveals.  Lovely now and through 2020.

"Bright red. Smoky, mineral-accented black raspberry and rose oil aromas are complemented by hints of cinnamon and allspice. Gently sweet red fruit flavors are given depth by a cherry pit nuance and sharpened by juicy acidity. Silky in texture and appealingly sweet, finishing with very good clarity, subtle tannins and noteworthy spicy persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2014 Product #30994 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2014 Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2014

Pinot Meunier's home is Champagne, where it's the region's most planted grape and makes up the heart of many a fine toasty, rich, sparkling wine.  As an abandoned sparkling wine experiment, Amalie Robert's version is arguably the most consistently excellent example in the world with a string of 90 and 91 point ratings from Wine Advocate, Josh Raynolds at Vinous, and more.

As you'd expect in a Champagne grape, there's a bit of tartness here and I always find it a bit tight and tingly on release.  In warm vintages - like 2014 - it opens quickly, and if you tried it when Dena and Ernie were here in July you'll be shocked at how much flesh it's gained in 45 days.  I like Ernie's tasting note so much, I'll quote it here:  "Delish red. Sweet aromas of ripe Montmorency cherries, red currants and bittersweet chocolate entice the palate into a rosy red fruit mélange intertwined with savory bits and restraining acidity that linger effortlessly. This wine is as elegant as the day is long."

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Weber Vyd 2014 Product #31087 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Weber Vyd 2014 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Weber Vyd 2014

6 cases available.  Art Weber planted this Dundee Hills site in 1976 just down the road from Maresh Vyd, and Jim Maresh has made wine from own-rooted Pommard planted in 1976 and 1983 since 2010.  It's a nice step up from the Dundee Hills bottling, with more richeness, deeper fruit, and lots and lots of perfume.  More open and forward than the Maresh Vyd, this is a delicious choice to drink now - 2029 or so.

"Vivid red. Mineral- and spice-tinged aromas of fresh red berries and candied rose develop a hint of incense as the wine opens up. Shows impressive clarity and lift in the mouth, offering sappy raspberry, spice cake and floral pastille flavors joined by a jolt of smoky minerals. Finishes very long and gently sweet, featuring subtle tannins and strong, floral-driven persistence." Vinous (Raynolds) 92 points

"The 2014 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1983. It has a very refined bouquet with red cherry, wild strawberry, sous-bois and subtle floral notes - very complex and classy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, nicely structured with a gentle grip. The fruit veers towards the darker side of the spectrum towards the finish, with blackberry and cranberry fruit, long and edgy. Classy, composed and cool, this is how to make world-class Pinot Noir."Wine Advocate 93 points

Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011 Product #30181 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011

Yes, you can certainly taste and enjoy Murto 2011 right now, but don't.  There is so much potential here still locked up in the bright,  minerally, structure that just won't unfurl and show itself until 2019 or so.  Already the bright red fruit, spice, and floral profile of a great Dundee Hills Pinot is easy to smell and taste.  And if, like me, you place a special priority on vibrancy, the sizzling cut and lift on display right now will make this hard to resist.  For those who wait, though, there will be richer, deeper, sweeter fruit to come along with plenty of earth and spice depth.  My personal favorite in a brilliant set of wines.

"Highly perfumed aromas of red fruit liqueur, Asian spices, rose oil and musky underbrush, with a subtle touch of smokiness in the background. Silky and penetrating on the palate, showing very good clarity to its spicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. The spiciness builds on the finish, which is firmed by silky, building tannins. Quite elegant in style and balanced to age, although it's already delicious."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

Belle Pente Pinot Noir Belle Pente Vyd 2011 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Belle Pente Vyd 2011

Here's a terrific introduction to the excitement and charm of the Willamette Valley's crazy 2011 vintage: fantastic purity and intensity of flavor with absolutely no excess weight.  The dark fruit typical of sedimentary soils holds center stage with lovely accents of earth, spice and dried flowers.  The fruit has come out from underneath the acidity and the tannins are sweet and supple, making this delicious right now - 2021+

"Assertive smoke- and spice-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit, sassafras and incense. Supple, tangy and sharply focused on entry, then broader in the middle, offering smoky cherry, blood orange and dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter herbs. Shows a refreshingly tangy quality on the finish, which clings with outstanding tenacity and no obvious tannins. Distinctly elegant in style, showing the best attributes of this cool vintage."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Marine Sedimentary Cuvee 2014 Product #30667 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Marine Sedimentary Cuvee 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Marine Sedimentary Cuvee 2014

From what could be called the "terrior series," this is one of two wines Patty Green makes to showcase the differences in the Willamette Valley's two main soil types:  iron-rich Volcanic vs limestone-dense Marine Sedimentary soils.  Here she showcases the dry, talc-like, soils uplifted from ancient sea-beds and resting on a mother rock of sandstone. Drainage is pretty much instantaneous here, so the vines have to drive their roots down into the sandstone to fine enough moisture to ripen.

Patty blends this limited release bottling from selected a blend of Pommard, Dijon 115 and Wadensvil clines grown on the Estate, Olenik, and Lia's Vineyards.  You'll find the dark, rich, fruit profile so characteristic of marine sedimentary soils, with accents of cola and earth.  A cool minerality adds lift and freshness to this powerful Pinot Noir for drinking now and over the next 5 years.  The 2013 - the first release of this wine - earned 91 points from Vinous and this is even better.

Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2013 Product #30727 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2013 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2013

The classic dark, smoky, aromas and rich, concentrated, texture of Dundee Hills Pinot Noir shines through from first sniff through the long, complex, finish.  Red raspberry and cherry fruit is framed by smoky stone, spice and cola complexity in a wine that finishes sweet, smooth and rich.  Tempting right now with duck or pork or beef and sure to gain more weight with time in cellar or decanter.

"Limpid red. High-pitched red berry, Asian spice and mineral aromas are complicated by a suave floral quality. Incisive raspberry and bitter cherry flavors slowly gain flesh and become sweeter in the midpalate while maintaining vivacity. Impressively precise, vibrant and pure, delivering strong finishing cut and silky, harmonious tannins that make a late appearance. This wine should age gracefully on its balance." From biodynamically farmed vines on the marine sedimentary soils of Yamhill-Carleton.  Tangy black raspberry, black cherry and raspberry fruit shines on the nose and gains sweetness on the pure, focused, palate.  Accents of spice and summer flowers weave in and out from front through the long, juicy, almost salty finish.  Delicious now with salmon or poultry; will improve for years.

"Bright red. Spice-tinged raspberry and cherry scents are complicated by hints of cola, musky flowers and smoky minerals. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering energetic red and dark berry flavors; suggestions of rose pastille and blood orange add complexity. Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011 Product #30997 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011 Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011

Yes, wonderfully elegant and very Northern Rhone-style Syrah from the southern Willamette Valley.  Remarkable stuff.

"The 2011 Syrah Satisfaction includes 50% whole-cluster fruit of four Rhône clones (plus a touch of co-planté Viognier vines). Not picked until November 14, it has an attractive bouquet with macerated red cherries, Provençal herbs, juniper berries and a touch of melted wax. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red berry fruit mixed with blueberry, Seville orange marmalade and a healthy pinch of white pepper lending the finish that Rhône "vibe." Very linear at the moment, the finish is quite tight. I would actually cellar this for one or two years as it should repay handsomely."Wine Advocate 91 points

Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvee Tonnelier 2013 Product #30071 (In Stock)
Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvee Tonnelier 2013 Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvee Tonnelier 2013

Doug Tunnel's homage to his father is always one of Willamette Valley's best (95 points WA in 2012, 92 four years running before that).  It's 100% Pommard Clone, so it's darker in fruit character and more powerful than the other wines here, but still fantastically fresh and pure.  Soaring aromas of red and black fruits, crushed flowers, sandalwood and smoke lead to a silky palate and finely tanninc finish.  Red fruit, smoke and herb linger.  Lovely stuff.

"Vibrant, focused, open-textured and distinctive, with savory elements weaving through the cherry and crème fraîche flavors, extending smoothly into a long finish. Best from 2017 through 2023. 570 cases made."Wine Spectator 92 points

Brian O'Donnell crafts this stunning Pinot Noir from the best parcels of his biodynamically-farmed Yamhill-Carleton estate.  Like most 2011s, this is picking up fruit and weight already and is captivating after an hour of air.  It will continue to improve for a decade and last longer than you'll wait to drink it.  Among the wines of the 2011 vintage.

"Brilliant ruby-red. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola and fresh lavender, with a hint of spicecake in the background. Silky, seamless and expansive, displaying intense red and dark berry flavors and a hint of allspice. Puts on weigh with aeration while maintaining vivacity. The mineral and floral qualities build on the persistent finish, which is firmed by fine-grained, harmonious tannins."  Vinous (Reynolds) 93 points

Robert Parker's brother-in-law, Mike Etzel, makes some of Oregon's most outstanding Pinot Noir and simply crushed it in the very fine 2014 harvest.  A blend of fruit from across the valley, the 2014 offers lush aromas of sweet dark cherry, sandalwood and spice.  Plush on the palate with sweet and savory flavors of dark fruit, sweet spice, and crushed flowers, it finishes long and smooth.  As Mike says, "This may be the best Willamette Valley cuvée that we have made to date."

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vyd 2015 Product #31307 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vyd 2015 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vyd 2015

For 2012:  WE 97 points and Wine Of The Year/WS NR
A vineyard that I’ve underestimated in the past but that has given Ken some his most exciting wines over the past few vintages.  Ken owns and farms this marine sedimentary site with loving care.  It’s not far from Savoya and Shea, but it often packs in even more power and punch than its more famous neighbors.  And, it handles heat well – when I visited during the very hot, very dry, summer of 2015, the vines here were verdant, healthy, and showed absolutely no signs of heat or water stress.

The vineyard is planted to a mixture of Pommard and Dijon clone that push through about 30 inches of sedimentary soils before hitting mother rock of fractured sandstone and siltstone.  Both the clones and the soils incline Abbott Claim towards a distinctive spice and floral focus, although there’s always plenty of rich plum, cassis and black cherry fruit.  Likely one of the stars of the vintage in ‘15.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vyd 2015 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vyd 2015

For 2012:  WE 96 points/WS 93 points
Always a favorite in Ken’s cellar, the Freedom Hills Pinot comes from a tiny slice (2.85 acres) of this well-respected vineyard lying between Eola Hills to the east and the Coastal Range to the west.  A tad warmer than vineyards in either neighboring region, but also possessed of unusually bright acidity that should sing through nicely in 2015.  Ken’s parcels were replanted about 10 years ago after phylloxera reached Freedom Hill, and now they give wine with a wonderful blend of richness and structure, accessibility and ability to age.  Lots of spice, chocolate, and herb notes to add complexity to the dark raspberry and plum.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2015 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2015

For 2012:  WE 94 points/WS 91 points
Ken’s signature wine and, arguably, Willamette Valley’s signature vineyard.  Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea always gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.

For 2012:  WE 94 points/WS 91 points
One of only two wines Ken makes from volcanic sites, this is always distinctive for its notes of bright cherry, blue/black berry, and juicy acids.   It’s a blend of 30+ year-old Pommard and slightly younger Dijon clone growing on very shallow, porous, soils.  Lots of fruit with complicating accents of tobacco, herb, and more.  A barrel sample tasted in February was sweet and spicy with a firm but supple finish.  A neat marriage of Eola Hill’s spice and freshness with volcanic sites’ classic red fruit.  I plan to buy this one.

Pre-Arrival:  Wine arrives late-October
Not Previously Rated (first vintage 2014)

Love the dark, smoky, intensity of wines grown on the volcanic Jory soils of the Dundee Hills?  Well, then this is your Ken Wright 2015 because it delivers more of that rich depth than any other wine in the set.  The vineyard actually belongs to Ken’s son, Cody Wright, who farms it for his Purple Hands project.  Ken says the site wants to express cherry, huckleberry, and cotton candy aromas/flavors in a wine with lush texture and bright acids.  Tasted from barrel in February, I found it “Impressive!” with spiced cherry fruit and remarkable intensity on the back.  Pretty limited, so move on this one.

For 2012 WE 94/WS 91

Like Latchkey, Carter is a volcanic soil site and gives serves up a nice dose of smoky richness to go with the blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit.  The barrel sample I tasted in February was plump, soft, and rich with a nicely spicy finish.  The lose basalt soils shown on the label force the vine roots to dig deep here and help Carter deliver health fruit in vintages wet and dry.  Like Latchkey, if you like a darker expression of Pinot, this is pretty compelling in that style.
