Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014 Product #29500 (In Stock)
Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014 Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014

On opening, aromas of golden delicious apple, apple skin, nectarine, Myer lemon peel and waxy white flower.  On the palate, the fruit turns spicier with pear, apple, and honeydew melon at the center and a hint of nuttiness.   The finish pops with bright, vibrant, acidity that lifts the green pear, Acacia flower, and lime pith flavors across a long, dry, finish.  Leaves your mouth watering and green melon and spice flavors lingering.  Drinks like a cross between Pinot Blanc – crisp, bright, green apple-laced – and bone dry Riesling – aromatic, a touch floral, and full of juicy acids.

Give it a few more months – or even a short decant now – and the wine opens beautifully.  The fruit get richer, and riper, picking up a more golden hue and a hint of hazelnut without losing the floral and Myer lemon accents.  The texture gets fleshier and finish more broad and rich, too, but the bright green apple acids and touch of lime zest bitterness keep things fresh and very drinkable. At all times, it’s a delicious match for everything from ham to salmon to seafood to salads or more.  Or just for  sipping on a pretty Spring afternoon.

Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml Product #29647 (In Stock)
Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml

An Oregon classic, with 40% whole-cluster fruit used in the great 2012 vintage.

"The 2012 Mt Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir comes from vines located above the winery augmented by purchased fruit from notable vineyards. It contains around 40% whole-cluster fruit (one of the central tenets at Cristom), and only undergoes one racking during its 12 months in barrel: one just before filtration and then just before bottling. It has an attractive tertiary/woodland-scented bouquet with dried rose petal notes coming through, much less fruit driven than many other 2012 Pinot Noirs. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It is quite sappy in style with crisp black fruit rather than red, leading to a focused, slightly austere, tobacco-tinged and saline finish. I would afford this a year in bottle for this "classic" style of Oregon Pinot."Wine Advocate 89 points

Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Product #30007 (In Stock)
Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette 2012

John Grochau sources fruit for this multi-vineyard Pinot Noir from organic and sustainably farmed vineyards up and down Willamette Valley.  In 2012 he made under 1,000 cases with about 30% whole cluster and around one-quarter new oak.

At first very spicy on the nose with notes of cinnamon, cardamom, and coriander weaving in and out of the black cherry and raspberry fruit, getting more sauve and integrated with a little air.  The texture is simply beautiful, with a pure, silky, mouthfeel, fine length, and long, supple, dusty tannins at the end.  The Bing cherry, raspberry and very ripe strawberry fruit flavors are nicely complicated by accents of sweet spice and fresh earth that linger nicely on the juicy, spicy, finish.  Delicious right now, better next year, and delicious through 2019 or so.

"Brilliant red. Red berries, fresh rose and smoky Indian spices on the pungent nose. Chewy and sharply focused, displaying good lift and spine to its ripe cherry and raspberry flavors, with a peppery element emerging with air. Turns sweeter on the finish, which features dusty tannins and a touch of cola."  Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2014 Product #30597 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2014

Patty Green first created the “Reserve” Pinot Noir as an outlet for younger vines from the Estate vineyard and less fine vineyard plots elsewhere.  Over the past 15 years, though, Patty and Jim have continually upgraded the quality of their vineyard sources as the vines on their own Estate site have gotten fully mature.  In 2014, more than 75% of the fruit for this wine came from Patty's Estate Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, Durant Vineyard, and Weber Vineyard in the Dundee Hills - as Jim says, "By almost any definition, these vineyards do not produce entry level wines."  And there's not much "entry level" about this beauty.

The 2014 fruit was so dark and powerful that Patty upped the new oak percentage here a bit to 33%, although most of the wine saw only neutral barrel.  There's plenty of ripeness and richness here, with layers of sweet blackberry, cherry, and black raspberry fruit with a touch of crushed herb and a pretty note of smoky spice underneath.  The wine is so smooth and silky that it's easy to miss the fine, ripe, tannin and mouthwatering acidity that keep this refreshing and promise immediate success at table and 8 or so years of development in cellar.  Just outstanding value and a best buy for the vintage.

Purple Hands Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2014 Purple Hands Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2014

Cody Wright - Ken Wright's son - is making a name for himself after working at Argyle, Ken Wright, and ROCO in the Willamette  Valley as well as abroad.  His 2014 blend of 6 vineyard sites from across the region is a beauty.  Rich and deeply textured, it pumps out generous blue/black fruit with accents of dusty mineral and smoke.  Ripe and broad, but not at all heavy, it's delicious already with plenty of near-term potential.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate 2014 Product #30598 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate 2014

Patricia Green's Estate vineyards sits in the heart of Ribbon Ridge, perhaps the Willamette Valley's most exciting sub-region.  Brick House, Beaux Freres, and Penner-Ash are just some of Patty's neighbors here.  The thin sedimentary Willakenzie soils here drain freely and the protection from the surrounding Chehalem Mountains creates a warm, dry, climate perfect for intensely flavored Pinot Noir.  In 2014, the Estate Pinot is about 40% Wadensvil clone (for exuberant fruit) and equal parts Pommard (for structure) and Dijon 114 (for perfume and elegance). Co-owner Jim Anderson's description of the wine is so spot-on that we'll just quote it here:

“Ribbon Ridge can produce wines of incredible delicacy and wines of enormous power. Our Estate Vineyard bottling has always fallen into the latter category. The duress the plants are under in the thin marine soils’ upper layers causes the fruit to be relatively low in yields and smaller on a per cluster basis. This makes for darker and more naturally more structured wines. Even in a higher yielding, warmer (and therefore fruit-driven) year this bottling still exhibits broodingly dark fruit intertwined with loamy, earthy characteristics and finishes with gripping tannins that give the wine form. This is Pinot Noir for those with darker souls and, perhaps, some devious intentions. Don’t bring this bottle home to your mama because she is going to have a talk with you later.”

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard 2014 Product #30671 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard 2014

Lia's straddles the volcanic and sedimentary divide in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, with volcanic soils at the top of the vineyard transitioning to marine sediments below.  Complex soils benefit from complexity in the vineyard, so Lia's is planted to Pommard in volcanic soils, Dijon 115 in sedimentary dirt, and a sliver of rarely seen Mariafeld Clone growing in the transition zone in the middle of the vineyard.  This is the first vintage Patty and Jim have had access to the Mariafeld Clone, and it took an outstanding wine  (92 points from Vinous in 2013) to a new level.

In 2013, this was one of the more tightly wound of Patty's wines, showing a peak of pleasure on release but tons of promise down the road.  In 2014, it's MUCH more generous and compelling right now but still has plenty of cellar life ahead.  As Patty's winery notes say, "The Mariafeld, Dijon 115 and Pommard lends a spicy note to the aromatics, a noticeable lift of red fruit and brightness in the mid-palate and a sturdier base of tannins. If there is a single vineyard Pinot Noir that we make that has more immediate appeal while still having down-the-road sort of chops this has to be it. This has forward, sweet dark fruit, quite a lot of texture and just enough finishing tannin to pull it all in at the end."

Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2010 Product #30725 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2010 Belle Pente Chardonnay Belle Pente Vyd 2010

A stunning Chardonnay that blends New World fruit with Burgundian structure and class.  From two harvest passes, one early to retain acidity and minerality and one late for rich fruit and body.  Fermented in barrel (about 10% new) and given 18 months on the lees to develop complexity and depth.

At nearly age 6, this is showing beautifully with grilled pineapple and peach fruit at the core and sophisticated notes of hazelnut, butter, and spice for complexity.  Rich and mouthfilling in texture and clear and clean on the long finish.

Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011 Product #30181 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vyd 2011

Yes, you can certainly taste and enjoy Murto 2011 right now, but don't.  There is so much potential here still locked up in the bright,  minerally, structure that just won't unfurl and show itself until 2019 or so.  Already the bright red fruit, spice, and floral profile of a great Dundee Hills Pinot is easy to smell and taste.  And if, like me, you place a special priority on vibrancy, the sizzling cut and lift on display right now will make this hard to resist.  For those who wait, though, there will be richer, deeper, sweeter fruit to come along with plenty of earth and spice depth.  My personal favorite in a brilliant set of wines.

"Highly perfumed aromas of red fruit liqueur, Asian spices, rose oil and musky underbrush, with a subtle touch of smokiness in the background. Silky and penetrating on the palate, showing very good clarity to its spicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. The spiciness builds on the finish, which is firmed by silky, building tannins. Quite elegant in style and balanced to age, although it's already delicious."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

Belle Pente Pinot Noir Belle Pente Vyd 2011 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Belle Pente Vyd 2011

Here's a terrific introduction to the excitement and charm of the Willamette Valley's crazy 2011 vintage: fantastic purity and intensity of flavor with absolutely no excess weight.  The dark fruit typical of sedimentary soils holds center stage with lovely accents of earth, spice and dried flowers.  The fruit has come out from underneath the acidity and the tannins are sweet and supple, making this delicious right now - 2021+

"Assertive smoke- and spice-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry pit, sassafras and incense. Supple, tangy and sharply focused on entry, then broader in the middle, offering smoky cherry, blood orange and dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter herbs. Shows a refreshingly tangy quality on the finish, which clings with outstanding tenacity and no obvious tannins. Distinctly elegant in style, showing the best attributes of this cool vintage."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Marine Sedimentary Cuvee 2014 Product #30667 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Marine Sedimentary Cuvee 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Marine Sedimentary Cuvee 2014

From what could be called the "terrior series," this is one of two wines Patty Green makes to showcase the differences in the Willamette Valley's two main soil types:  iron-rich Volcanic vs limestone-dense Marine Sedimentary soils.  Here she showcases the dry, talc-like, soils uplifted from ancient sea-beds and resting on a mother rock of sandstone. Drainage is pretty much instantaneous here, so the vines have to drive their roots down into the sandstone to fine enough moisture to ripen.

Patty blends this limited release bottling from selected a blend of Pommard, Dijon 115 and Wadensvil clines grown on the Estate, Olenik, and Lia's Vineyards.  You'll find the dark, rich, fruit profile so characteristic of marine sedimentary soils, with accents of cola and earth.  A cool minerality adds lift and freshness to this powerful Pinot Noir for drinking now and over the next 5 years.  The 2013 - the first release of this wine - earned 91 points from Vinous and this is even better.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2014 Product #30670 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Volcanic Cuvee 2014

The more vivid, red-fruited, partner to the Marine Sedimentary cuvee in Patty’s essay on how soil type shapes Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.  Here the focus is on the decomposed basaltic soils that make up the Dundee Hills range overlooking Newberg.  The iron-rich Jory soils here bring out Pinot’s red fruit elements and loads of spice with a fine silkiness of texture.  The winery note describes the wine well:

“The Dundee Hills’ Pinot Noirs are about richness, sweet fruit with soft tannins. This wine will show the dense, regal and structured red fruit of Durant, the sublime sweetness of Balcombe Vineyard and the silky elegance and complexity of Weber Vineyard. This is sweetly fruited, sublimely textured Pinot with a long, supple finish and incredible texture from beginning to end. Certainly, this is a bit of a geeky exercise in winemaking but for those interested in the nature of terroir it is a pretty cool one.”

A tiny production (300 cases or so) blend of Pommard and Dijon 114 Pinot from the highest elevation blocks within Vista Hills' Dundee Hills vineyard (almost abutting Domaine Serene). In 2012, the fruit had plenty of power and complexity all by itself, so this was all destemmed and aged entirely in second and third-use barrels.  You'll find Dundhee Hills' signature red fruit, spice, and firm structure here along with a deep, earthy, core and hints of cola and stone fruit.  Rich but not heavy and very easy to drink!

Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Select 2013 Product #30571 (In Stock)
Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Select 2013 Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Select 2013

The Select Pinot Noir is usually made in more abundant vintages when not all of the estate’s barrels quite fit in the regular cuvees.  It was last made in 2010 (no 2011 or 2012) and will feature prominently among the best entry-level reds of the huge 2014 and 2015 harvests.  In 2013, there wasn’t a lot of fruit, but Doug didn’t bottle a Boulder Block cuvee (waiting for replanting to take hold) or his top of the winery Evelyn’s cuvee.  Wine that would have gone to those wines, plus Pommard and Dijon selections not used in Tonnelier and Les Dijonnais ended up here. Not that this is an afterthought wine!  It’s got plenty of Brick House Pinot purity and depth of aroma and flavor, with a nice extra touch of tangy lift.  Fun and delicious.

"This self-described, entry-level blend boasts floral aromatics and spicy, peppery fruit flavors of cranberry, strawberry and raspberry. Ribbon Ridge Pinots show great character, especially when from estate-grown, biodynamically-certified grapes like this offering." Wine Enthusiast 92 points

"This crisp and tangy red delivers raspberry, floral and peppery spice flavors set on an open-textured frame, lingering with increasing intensity. Drink now through 2021. 535 cases made."Wine Spectator 91 points

Doug Tunnel's homage to his father is always one of Willamette Valley's best (95 points WA in 2012, 92 four years running before that).  It's 100% Pommard Clone, so it's darker in fruit character and more powerful than the other wines here, but still fantastically fresh and pure.  Soaring aromas of red and black fruits, crushed flowers, sandalwood and smoke lead to a silky palate and finely tanninc finish.  Red fruit, smoke and herb linger.  Lovely stuff.
