Ransom Pinot Gris Eola Amity 2012 Product #27740 (In Stock)
Ransom Pinot Gris Eola Amity 2012 Ransom Pinot Gris Eola Amity 2012

Very little made (just 232 cases) of this organically grown, naturally made, Piont Gris from Cattrall and Temperance Hill vineyards.  A rich, deeply-textured, take on Oregon Pinot Gris that shows the complexity of whole cluster pressing, two months on the lees, and just the right hint of residual sugar. Aromas and flavors of heirloom apples, tart pear, mountain flowers and brioche bread.  Creamy and rich on the palate but then juicy and refreshing on the mouthwatering finish where lemon custard and browned pear notes linger.

"Ample and subtly creamy, this still offers more than enough refreshing primary juiciness and an abundance of ripe peach as if close to the core: subtly piquant and salty in a manner that really stimulates the salivary glands. A garland of bittersweet floral perfume and additionally invigorating twist of lime peel add to the appeal of this outstanding value that should prove highly versatile until at least 2015."Wine Advocate 89 points

St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2011 St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2011

Mark Vlossak always delivers a lovely blend of ripe power and earthy elegance in his wines, and this - his entry-level 2011 - is a beauty.  Opens with smoky, earthy aromas of dark fruit and plenty of spice.  Then loads of earthy, smoky cherry and pomegranate flavors with more spice.  Lithe and elegant, this closes with pretty acidity and light, fine, tannin.

"Tight, focused and juicy, with blackberry and currant fruit playing against mineral flavors and tangy acidity as the finish lingers enticingly."Wine Spectator 90 points

Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2011 Product #28072 (In Stock)

The cool 2011 Willamette Valley vintage shows through clear as a bell in this bright, crisp,  no-oak, Chardonnay.  Two blocks of Dijon clones were hand harvested in early November and then fermented and aged in tank with no malolactic fermentation.  The result is a wonderfully fresh and elegant Chardonnay, redolent of pineapple, crisp green apple and mango fruit with zippy accents of ginger and  lemongrass.  The richness of the pure Chardonnay fruit is perfectly balanced by the bright acids on the long, mouthwatering, finish.  Focused, pure, and very delicious.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml Product #26569 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml

Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea Vineyard gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.

Ebony Wines Chardonnay The Hive 2011 Product #27513 (In Stock)
Ebony Wines Chardonnay The Hive 2011 Ebony Wines Chardonnay The Hive 2011

I heard a lot about Chardonnay’s potential in Oregon during my August visit to the Willamette Valley, but this is the wine that is delivering on the potential right now.  Grown in a vineyard abutting an apple orchard and swarming with honey bees, this is a rarity in the Valley – all heirloom clone 108 from Left Bank Vineyard rather than the newer, trendier, Dijon clones.  I’m not sure if it’s the vineyard, the clonal selection, or just great farming and winemaking, but this could just be the best Chardonnay made in Oregon in 2011.  And, it’s a steal!

The aromas are generous and complex, with grilled pineapple and tangy butter taking center stage and accents of toasted hazelnut and spice.  In the mouth, the savory butter character marries to rich apple, pineapple, and grilled nut flavors and a dash of chalky mineral.  The texture is sort of a cross between Chassagne-Montrachet (mineral, delineated) and Meursault (buttery, creamy, chalky) and while the acidity is more than enough for fantastic balance, the richness is just crazy in the context of this vintage.  Flavors of dried pineapple, butter, herb honey, and mint linger on and on.  A superb wine for table to enjoy with scallops or crab or cheeses – or to just sip and marvel at.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Product #28003 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012

In the big, ripe, 2009 vintage, Ken Wright did something he hadn't done in years - made a Pinot Noir by blending wine from different vineyards.  It had been a big crop and he had some barrels too soft to fit with his single vineyard wines, and making an "entry level" blend seemed more attractive than selling the wine in bulk. We got some, you tried it, and the 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot flew out of the store.

Ken did the same thing in the cooler, more challenging, 2010 and 2011 harvests, but we thought the results were less impressive.  Now in the great 2012 vintage – one Ken ranks among the greatest he’s ever worked – the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is back and firing on all cylinders.  It’s a blend of barrels from some of Oregon’s most famous vineyards:  Abbott Claim, Canary Hill, Carter, Freedom Hill, Guadalupe, McCrone, Meredith Mitchell, Nysa and Savoya.  Like the 2009, it’s rich and expressive, bursting with crushed berry fruit, rose petal, smoke and fresh earth notes.  We suspect there’s a little press wine in the mix, giving the wine a dash of fine-grained tannic support and making it very food friendly.  If you love Ken’s style and have some of his 2012 single vineyard wines, leave ‘em alone for 5 years and drink this now!

A unique blend of 40% Riesling, 35% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Blanc, and 5% Gewurztraminer that, somehow, is even more than the sum of its parts! Complex aromatics of white flowers, lavender, crushed herb and citrus zest lead to a zippy mouthful of flowers, stones, pear, citrus and spice.  As it warms up a bit, you'll find notes of white raspberry and cherry, too, with pink grapefruit on the finish.  Zesty and fun.

Matello Pinot Noir Hommage Willamette Valley 2011 Product #27515 (In Stock)
Matello Pinot Noir Hommage Willamette Valley 2011 Matello Pinot Noir Hommage Willamette Valley 2011

Marcus makes this cuvee as a “Thank You” to all of the Willamette Valley winemakers who shared their talent, skill, and experience with him as he was learning to make wine.  It’s a blend of fruit from sites in Yamhill and the Dundee Hills.  It’s usually his darkest flavored Pinot Noir, but in the bright, crisp, 2011 vintage it fairly sparkles.  Complex aromas of ripe Pinot fruit, smoke and spice lead to vibrant flavors of sweet black cherry and savory smoke, spice, and mineral.  The flavors swirl around from sweetly fruited to floral and then to spice/earth/mineral and back again as juicy acids and fine, ripe, tannin make your mouth water.  Marcus (and I!) think this will follow the trajectory of his 2007s, gaining depth of fruit and softening over the next 3-5 years but never getting heavy or dense.  Beautiful stuff.

Arterberry Maresh Chardonnay Maresh Vyd 2011 Product #28149 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Chardonnay Maresh Vyd 2011 Arterberry Maresh Chardonnay Maresh Vyd 2011

Very limited, but very compelling Chardonnay that has a rich texture but also a fine bit of zing.

"Bottled after 20 months of long but passive lees contact, the Arterberry-Maresh 2011 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard is alluringly and stimulatingly scented with fresh lime, tangerine, iris and ginseng, whose pits, rinds and roots piquantly lace an at once brightly juicy and subtly creamy palate. There are lovely clarity, buoyancy, and salvia-inducing salinity here such as one misses in Chardonnay from anywhere outside of Chablis or the Jura. Interestingly, Maresh will typically allow his Chardonnay must to settle, chilled, for two full weeks before letting it ferment spontaneously. I wonder what influence that might have on its longevity. All I know for sure is that from analogy with the corresponding 2009, I’m pretty confident that this long-finishing 2011 will reward through at least 2016."Wine Advocate 92 points

Matello Pinot Noir Souris Willamette Valley 2011 Product #27588 (In Stock)
Matello Pinot Noir Souris Willamette Valley 2011 Matello Pinot Noir Souris Willamette Valley 2011

The 2011 edition of Souris had just been bottled when I tasted it in August, so it was understandably hard to read.  Already very complex with crunchy cherry and raspberry fruit surrounding notes of smoke, roasted coffee, wild flowers and more.  This is very tangy and, perhaps, a touch harsh at its very young age, but by this time next year will be pure and long and in 5 more years will deliver loads of dark fruit and complex secondary notes with a satisfying, mouthwatering, finish.  Try it now to imagine the great stuff to come – and sit on some until 2017!

Wildaire Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Shea Vyd 2011 Product #27484 (In Stock)
Wildaire Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Shea Vyd 2011 Wildaire Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Shea Vyd 2011

Dick and Deirdre Shea's vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton is, by common consensus, Willamette Valley's "Grand Cru" site for Pinot Noir.  Planted through 1990, Ken Wright brought it to attention in 1993 with his first vineyard designate bottling at Panther Creek, soon followed by Mike Etzel at Beaux Freres.  Dry farmed (no irrigation) marine soils force grapes to work a little harder here but the southwest-facing bowl shape traps plenty of warmth and sunshine for perfect ripening.

Matt Driscoll made just 72 cases of Shea Pinot in the small 2011 vintage, and the lightness of the year plus Shea's tendency to deliver dark, spicy, fruit came together beautifully.  The texture is pure 2011 - elegant, transparent, and vibrant with perfect balance at just 13.0% alcohol.  But, the flavors have a dark, black fruited, muscle with plenty of ripe cherry, blackberry, and smoky spice notes.  The aromas are captivating and the finish is super long with black fruit, coffee, fresh earth and tea notes lingering on and on over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Give this an hour in decanter (or 2 years in cellar) and you'll find it taking on more weight and depth but still remaining beautifully pure and elegant. A steal for Shea Vineyard Pinot of this quality.

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Dijon Clones 2009 Product #28036 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Dijon Clones 2009 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Dijon Clones 2009

We had a little of the 2008 late last year, but the 2009 may be even better.  It’s a blend of 5 Dijon clones, grown on 4 different rootstocks sourced from 9 dry farmed blocks, each fermented with some whole clusters and aged in barrel for at least 12 months.  Like all Amalie Robert wines, it’s released late, which means you can actually enjoy it now (although it will age beautifully).  Pretty, bright, and full of sweet Dijon clone red fruits balanced by bright, spring-like, acidity.  Mouthwatering and delicious.

"Bright red. Sexy, spice-accented aromas of red berry preserves, potpourri and sandalwood, with a touch of cola in the background. Shows very good intensity and sweetness, offering lithe raspberry and cherry flavors and a hint of bitter blood orange. Closes on a spicy note, with excellent clarity and persistent sweetness."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Ayoub Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard 2011 Product #26946 (In Stock)
Ayoub Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard 2011 Ayoub Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard 2011

Former winemaker/GM at Napa’s Stags’ Leap Winery Robert Brittan makes Mo Ayoub’s wines and also supplies a little fruit for Ayoub from his own rocky, windswept, vineyard in McMinville.  While the flavors are dark and rich here, the high acidity and small-berry intensity make this more lifted and bright than the Estate Pinot.

"Ayoub’s 120 cases of 2011 Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard adds to the delicious accumulation of evidence that this dramatically domed and stonily basaltic site south of McMinnville developed by his oenological coach Robert Brittan is among the most exciting in the Willamette Valley, indeed in the entire U.S. (See especially my account of the Brittan estate wines in this report and that of Issue 202.) “There’s just more of everything here,” notes Ayoub of the present instantiation, and the most dramatic thing I notice is an emphasis on black fruits rare for this vintage, but whose sense of ripeness is allied to vintage-typically tartly bright fruit acids that seem to be buffered by sheer density. The feel here is firm but not hard or austere. Savory elements of animal blood, smoked meat and game lend striking contrast to the intense fruit. An onrush of what I can only refer to as rocks and gravel sets the seal of intriguing complexity on this Pinot’s audacious performance. No doubt it will settle down somewhat with a few years in bottle, but I suspect – even though only short-term track record for the bottle evolution of Pinot from this site has accumulated – that one will want to hold at least a portion of this concentrate through 2025."Wine Advocate 93 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2007 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2007

“Beautiful”, “lovely”, and “elegant” all appear again and again in my tasting notes here.  Opens with soaring aromatics of juicy red fruit, spice, and fresh cut fragrant flowers.  In the mouth weightless and utterly transparent with raspberry and strawberry fruits lifted by bright acidity and complicated by notes of licorice and spice. Floral and cherry flavors linger on and on.

“Limpid red. Suave, complex scents of fresh red berries, potpourri, incense and licorice. Palate-staining strawberry and raspberry flavors are lifted by notes of orange peel and white pepper, with a deeper cherry pit quality emerging on the back. Suave and accessible right now, finishing with very good cut and length.”International Wine Cellar 91 points

Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2011 Product #26926 (In Stock)
Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2011 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2011

Another stunning release from one of Oregon's top Pinot Producers in the tricky 2011 vintage.  A blend of fruit from top vineyards - Shea, Guadolupe, and Beaux Freres' own Upper Terrace - this pure, layered, Pinot Noir is already wide open and ready to enjoy.  Generous aromas and flavors of dark cherry, black raspberry, Asian spice, and damp fresh earth.  Wonderful purity and transparency here, but plenty of intensity and a nice wisp of tannin and bright acids make this a great choice for drinking now, pairing with salmon and earthy foods, or even aging for 3-5 years.  A beauty.

"Pungent, spice-accented aromas of cherry and black raspberry, complicated by a smoky nuance and a building floral element. Pliant dark berry and cherry compote flavors show a refreshingly bitter quality and an exotic touch of candied lavender. Closes with excellent energy and focus, leaving notes of allspice and cherry-cola behind."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"The satiny texture lets the harmonious flavors of red berry, pomegranate and spice unfurl evocatively. The finish lingers enticingly. Shows freshness and impeccable balance. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 93 points
