Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014 Product #29500 (In Stock)
Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014 Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014

On opening, aromas of golden delicious apple, apple skin, nectarine, Myer lemon peel and waxy white flower.  On the palate, the fruit turns spicier with pear, apple, and honeydew melon at the center and a hint of nuttiness.   The finish pops with bright, vibrant, acidity that lifts the green pear, Acacia flower, and lime pith flavors across a long, dry, finish.  Leaves your mouth watering and green melon and spice flavors lingering.  Drinks like a cross between Pinot Blanc – crisp, bright, green apple-laced – and bone dry Riesling – aromatic, a touch floral, and full of juicy acids.

Give it a few more months – or even a short decant now – and the wine opens beautifully.  The fruit get richer, and riper, picking up a more golden hue and a hint of hazelnut without losing the floral and Myer lemon accents.  The texture gets fleshier and finish more broad and rich, too, but the bright green apple acids and touch of lime zest bitterness keep things fresh and very drinkable. At all times, it’s a delicious match for everything from ham to salmon to seafood to salads or more.  Or just for  sipping on a pretty Spring afternoon.

Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013 Product #28814 (In Stock)
Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013 Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013

John Grochau’s easy-drinking, early release, Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee always gives us a nice preview of the vintage to come, and his 2013 leaves us feeling very excited indeed.  John’s hands-off approach to winemaking (“Don’t screw it up” is his motto) and light use of new oak (just 10% here) lets classic Pinot cherry fruit and accents of cranberry, fresh earth, flower petal, and spice shine through clear as a bell.  The fruit shows some of the dark richness found in Willamette’s last hot vintage (2009), but with better freshness and a light, silky, texture that makes this wonderfully easy to drink.  Fantastic value in handcrafted Willamette Valley Pinot Noir!

Vista Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013 Product #29547 (In Stock)
Vista Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013 Vista Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013

From four different blocks of Vista Hills’ Dundee Hills estate, this is a great example of the charm and richness you’ll find in the best 2013 Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs (and a screaming value, too!).  The estate’s Jory soils easily shed the big dose of late-September rains, allowing the fruit to process the extra water and hang until full ripeness (at 13.3% abv) in early October.  The grapes where hand harvested, sorted twice – in the vineyard and again at the winery – and then aged 14 months in all used French oak to produce 818 cases of lovely, pure, Pinot.

You’ll get 2013’s warm ripeness on the nose, with spicy, earthy, scents of rich black cherry, cranberry, fresh flowers and a hint of blood orange.  On the palate the wine is surprisingly rich and weighty, but with fine transparency and freshness, too.  Complex flavors of cherry, candied cranberry, orange zest, and strawberry are framed by notes of spice, smoke, and earth.  The sweet fruit flavors carry on through the gentle finish where you’ll get a burst of cranberry, cherry and blood orange supported by fresh acids and soft, supple, tannins.  This is a LOT of wine for the money.

Evesham Wood Blanc Du Puits Sec 2014 Product #29570 (In Stock)
Evesham Wood Blanc Du Puits Sec 2014 Evesham Wood Blanc Du Puits Sec 2014

This blend of 85% Pinot Gris, almost 15% Gewurztraminer, and dashes of Traminer and Riesling shows just how much Oregon's climate can excel with these traditionally cool-climate varieties. The classic Gewurztraminer notes of rose petals and lychee are tempered by the bright acidity and minerality of the Pinot Gris. A delicious standalone sipper that would also be fantastic with pork.

Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml Product #29647 (In Stock)

An Oregon classic, with 40% whole-cluster fruit used in the great 2012 vintage.

"The 2012 Mt Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir comes from vines located above the winery augmented by purchased fruit from notable vineyards. It contains around 40% whole-cluster fruit (one of the central tenets at Cristom), and only undergoes one racking during its 12 months in barrel: one just before filtration and then just before bottling. It has an attractive tertiary/woodland-scented bouquet with dried rose petal notes coming through, much less fruit driven than many other 2012 Pinot Noirs. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It is quite sappy in style with crisp black fruit rather than red, leading to a focused, slightly austere, tobacco-tinged and saline finish. I would afford this a year in bottle for this "classic" style of Oregon Pinot."Wine Advocate 89 points

Stangeland Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Product #28337 (In Stock)
Stangeland Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Stangeland Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette 2012

Larry Miller has been growing grapes in the Eola-Amity hills since 1978 - making him a pioneer here - but we're just getting to taste his wines for the first time now. This luscious 2012 is a great introduction, showing off a nice richness, depth and focus to the dark red raspberry and ripe cranberry fruit with just a touch of fresh earth and oak spice.  The red fruit wells up to cloak the ripe tannin on the finish, making this fun to drink now and a solid candidate to improve for a while.

"Smoke-accented red berries and potpourri on the fragrant nose, along with an energetic spiciness and a hint of cola. Juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are underscored by a dusty mineral quality and a hint of cocoa powder. Fine-grained tannins come on late, adding grip to the spicy, very persistent finish. With its distinct vibrancy and nerviness, here's a 2012 that acts a lot like a 2011."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Erin Nuccio made just 3.5 barrels of this elegant, Burgundy-style, Chardonnay in the great 2012 Oregon harvest and named it for his daughter, Juliette.  Barrel fermented and aged for 18 months on the lees (but with no stirring), it opens with complex aromas of green apple, toasted nuts, and a hint of butter.  Then, you'll find layered flavors of citrus, lemon curd, Granny Smith, and hazelnut.  Creamy textured but crisp and nutty on the vivid finish.  Give it a big swirl or even a short decant and watch it unfurl!

Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola Cuvee 2013 Product #29569 (In Stock)
Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola Cuvee 2013 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola Cuvee 2013

Owner/winemaker at this legendary Willamette Valley estate since 2010, Erin Nuccio used all he learned from Evesham Wood founder Russ Ramey to create an elegant, delicious, 2013 cuvee from selected vineyards around the Eola Hills.  Like all Evesham Wood’s estate wines, it’s made naturally from organically farmed grapes harvested earlier than most – perfectly ripe but still bursting with juicy acid.

Like last year's 2012, this serves up complex aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, earthy mushroom, sweet spice, and forest floor.  On the palate, it's mouthfilling but very elegant in weight with layered flavors of blackberry, huckleberry, sweet cherry, and fresh earth.  The pure, generous, flavors roll across your tongue with fine grace and persistence and linger nicely over the bright acids and fine-grained tannins.

Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec 2012 Product #29207 (In Stock)
Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec 2012 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec 2012

One of the few top 2012s still waiting on its first critical reviews, making this elegant, very pure, Pinot from one of the Eola Hills' very best vineyards an under-the-radar buying opportunity.  Biodynamic farming, limited new oak, and the unique yeasts former owner Russ Ramey cultivated from the cellars of Burgundy's Henri Jayer all come together perfectly here.  A perfume and flavors of crushed cherry and red berry fruit, fresh flowers, damp earth, and a touch of savory herb.  The finish is long and the texture like silk, but there's sneaky power here and plenty of cellar potential.

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Wadenswil Clone 2009 Product #28035 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Wadenswil Clone 2009 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Wadenswil Clone 2009

Normally sold only at the winery or to mailing list customers, we’re delighted to be the only retailer in the country to get an allocation of this two barrel/50 case wine.  Wadenswil was Oregon’s first Pinot Noir clone and, with Pommard, responsible for the region’s first head-turning successes.  Although the fashion for Dijon clones dominated Oregon plantings in the 2000s, thoughtful growers have come to realize that Wadenswil clones grown on loose, sedimentary, soils deliver a uniquely delicious blend of savory spice and deep, luscious, fruit that Dijon clones miss.

That’s what you’ll find here from 10 year-old Wadenswil vines grown without irrigation on patches of sedimentary soil throughout the Amalie Robert vineyard.  Low yields, higher than normal leaf cover, and late harvesting allow Wadenswil’s tannins to soften and ripe fruit flavors to develop without any excessive alcohol.  Whole cluster fermented with native yeast and aged in barrel for at least 12 months, this wine is made from the two barrels that Ernie and Dena think best expresses Wadenswil’s potential in their unique, Southern Willamette Valley, site.

“Bright red. Heady, exotic aromas of candied red fruits, sandalwood, lavender and rose. Juicy, sweet and focused, offering fresh raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that put on weight with air. Shows an array of spice and floral qualities on the finish, along with notes of candied raspberry and bitter rhubarb. Wild stuff, and balanced to age.” International Wine Cellar 93 points

Ayoub Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard 2012 Product #28459 (In Stock)
Ayoub Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard 2012 Ayoub Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard 2012

About 100 cases made from the great dry-farmed Brittan Vineyard south of McMinnville.  This earned a 93 point WA rating in 2011.  Mo’s note: “Like previous Brittan Vineyard bottlings, this is packed with dark-fruited intensity. Concentrated blackberry and black currant abounds, framed by a subtle mineral thread and a baking spice-dusted creme brulee-like finish. Very focused at this point and best cellared for 2-4 years before drinking.”

"The 2012 Pinot Noir Brittan Vineyard, aged in 30% new French oak, seemed a little herbaceous on the nose, though a second bottle opened demonstrated freshness and fruit intensity. The palate is nicely poised with a crisp line of acidity. There is plenty of blackberry and raspberry fruit, a fine saline touch with impressive structure on the finish. Based on the second bottle this is an excellent Pinot Noir."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Broad and juicy, with blackberry and cassis flavors, trailing floral and chamomile notes as the finish plays against lively acidity and polished tannins."Wine Spectator 92 points

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2013 Product #28905 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2013 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2013

Yamhill-Carlton AVA on Sedimentary/Willakenzie soils.  Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea Vineyard gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.

His notes on the 2013 suggest a typical, intense and dark-fruited, Shea: “Floral and spice focused.  Blue fruit, blueberry, black currant with delicate anise and cola notes.”

"Supple, generous and expressive on an open frame that lets the flavors float, with a tinge of crisp tannins impinging slightly on the black cherry and Earl Grey tea flavors, which linger on the elegant finish. Drink now through 2022. 1,273 cases made."Wine Spectator 92 points
