Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Product #29364 (In Stock)
Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012

Like it's neighbor Cahors, Buzet was once a bustling source of robust reds for export to England and beyond (before those nasty Bordelais started taxing wine moving up the Gironde to the sea). Today, it's starting to reemerge as a fine value source for rich, soft, Bordeaux-style wines without the Bordeaux price tag.

This little beauty from the Buzet co-op is a fine example of what can be done with Bordeaux grapes here in France's Southwest - and one of the few no-sulfur added wines in the store.  Cabernet for structure and Merlot for plum fruit with time in fine oak barrels (the co-op makes their own!) for a soft, supple, complexity.  Plump, ripe cherry and currant fruit gets just the right touch of spice, tobacco, and fresh herb to go with the finely tannic finish. Very good value here.

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml

Half Bottles!  Perfect for an evening sip.

"A winner from the Milhade family, Chateau Recougne has a reputation for lasting 20-30 years in the bottle in many vintages. I do not think the 2011 has that much staying power, but it over-delivers in body, richness, density and length. It is a shockingly good effort displaying a dark ruby color as well as abundant notes of earth, licorice and black currants, surprising body, richness and depth. A major sleeper of the vintage, it should drink well for 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2013 Product #30078 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2013 Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2013

A classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%) and Merlot (55%). This is a soft, fruit filled, take on Bordeaux that fills your mouth with juicy red currant and black berry fruit accented by a touch of spice.  Subtle notes of fresh herb and tobacco keep this anchored in Bordeaux, and there’s just the enough ripe tannin to let it work well at table (but not enough to get in the way of solo sipping).

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Rouge 2012 Product #28783 (In Stock)
Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Rouge 2012 Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Rouge 2012

We’re not sure why this very classic red Bordeaux isn’t a lot more expensive.  Unlike most “value” Bordeaux, it’s based the region’s best, most aristocratic grape, Cabernet Sauvignon.  The one-third Merlot adds volume and plumpness and the time part of the wine spends in new French oak barrels – a rarity in value Bordeaux – gives polish, spice, and added complexity.

The aromas here scream "Bordeaux" with dark black currant, milk chocolate, cedar and tobacco notes and chocolate covered cherries all intermingling nicely.  The aromas suggest a rich, luscious, wine and that’s just what you’ll find when you taste it, too.  Red and black currant and tangy cherry fruit flavors make up the wine’s core with bitter chocolate (unlike the milkier chocolate on the nose), cocoa powder accents, cedar and crushed herb accents lending complexity and interest.  Even though the texture is rich and full, the wine retains Bordeaux’s classic appetizing dryness and aristocratic restraint, with fine, crisp, tannins lying underneath the lingering savory soy and smoke flavors.  Performs like a $20 wine, which makes this price even more attractive!

Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010 Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010

Mostly Merlot, with 10% Carmenere and 5% Petit Verdot for color and structure.  Unusually - at least at this price point - the wine ages entirely in new and 1 year-old oak casks for a year. The result is a richly fruit-filled Bordeaux - cherry, cassis, plum - with sophisticated accents of smoke, cedar, and herb.  Almost California fruit levels, but plenty of Bordeaux class at the end.

A traditional blend of about 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon that sees little or no oak.  Nicely complex aromas of fresh green grass, lemon and orange citrus, with a hint of wet wool - the classic smell of Semillon.  Clean and fresh and very brisk on the palate with the juicy fruit taking center stage up front and then loads of citrus and a bright mineral note emerging on the back.

Bulgaria has plenty of fine wine potential, and it's starting to emerge in wines like this gem.  It's a blend of 66% Merlot plus Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in used oak for a year and in bottle for several more.  There's a nice velvety texture to the palate of dark fruit, tobacco, and earthy spice.  Mellow and mature and a bit like a rich Bordeaux, this is very nice value.

Another fine value vintage from this long-time favorite.

"This well-known Bordeaux Superieur, which has a fabulous reputation for aging 20-30 years in certain vintages, comes from proprietor Xavier Milhad. The 2012, a blend of 78% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, has a dense ruby/plum color and attractive, juicy blackcurrant fruit. Supple, round and generous, this is an over-achiever and a sleeper of the vintage. Drink it over the next 5-10 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it lasts longer."Wine Advocate 87 points

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2010 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.  Delicious right now and will improve for another 5 years or so.

The second wine of Haut Medoc's Larose Trintaudon is second to none when it comes to value in the great 2010 harvest. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot smells great - ripe raspberry, cassis, black currant, smoke and cigar tobacco.  Then it's lush and plush on the palate before the Bordeaux structure comes up nicely.  Loads of ripe fruit flavors with clear notes of Bordeaux cedar, tobacco, smoke, and more. Delicious now - 2020.

Clos Des Lunes Lune Blanche Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Product #29679 (In Stock)
Clos Des Lunes Lune Blanche Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Clos Des Lunes Lune Blanche Bordeaux Blanc 2013

The famous Graves estate Dom de Chevalier makes this classic white Bordeaux from vines planted in Sauturnes.  Dry, fresh, savory, and long on the palate and finish.

"The 2013 Clos des Lunes is a dry Semillon-based white from a parcel between Giraud and Y'Quem in Sauternes. White flowers, pears, mint and white stone fruits are all laced together in a vibrant, stony wine to drink over the next few years, while the flavors remain crisp. I very much like the sense of tension here."  Vinous 89-91 points

"Delicious, with racy tarragon, lemon pulp and blanched almond notes, as well as richer white peach, tangerine and heather accents. This pulls everything together on the racy, well-detailed finish. Drink now through 2016."Wine Spectator 90 points

Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011 Product #29492 (In Stock)
Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011 Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011

Most "value" Bordeaux carries a regional "Bordeaux" or "Medoc" label, so we were excited to find this gem from the prestigious commune of Saint-Estephe showing loads of Saint-Estephe character in the tricky 2011 vintage.   It's rich and deep, with more robust black currant fruit complementing its spice, cedar, and black olive notes.  As you'd expect from a mainly-Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux, there's good structure here but also lots of ripe fruit (if no overt fruitiness).  This will develop nicely over the next 5-8 years in cellar, but will also drink well now with lamb, pork chops, or beef.  Fine value.

Ch Larose Perganson Haut Medoc 2009 Product #30194 (In Stock)
Ch Larose Perganson Haut Medoc 2009 Ch Larose Perganson Haut Medoc 2009

A rare 2009 Bordeaux that delighted both America’s Robert Parker and Britan’s Jancis Robinson on release and has just gotten better since.  It's from 35 year-old vines growing on classic Bordeaux gravel soils just outside Pauillac and St. Julien, aged in tank (15%) and oak (85%) including about 50% new French oak.  The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and power), 45% Merlot (for body and fruit) and 5% Petit Verdot (color, perfume), all from sustainably farmed 35 year-old vines.  Both British critic Jancis Robinson (17/20 points) and American Robert Parker (90 points, Sleeper of the Vintage") loved it on release, but it's even better now - as you'll see from James Suckling's just released review. A rich, satisfying, Bordeaux to drink right now with beef and lamb or hold through 2024.

"This is the posh sister to Larose-Trintaudon from vineyards in Arcins. Healthy crimson. Very sophisticated, swish perfume. Tastes as though an enormous amount of attention has been lavished on this wine. Top-quality oak for a start and really concentrated fruit. Lively and ripe. Great balance."  Jancis Robinson 17/20 points

“Complex aromas of blueberries, licorice and walnuts follow through to a full body, round and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Very fine indeed. Drink or hold.”  James Suckling 92 points (October, 2015)

"A sleeper of the vintage and impressive is their cuvee called Larose Perganson, which in 2009 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the silkiness of its sibling, but is fuller-bodied, with more layers of fruit and glycerin and a heady finish (14.3% alcohol). It is opulent and pure, with loads of cassis, black raspberry and licorice notes backed up with some subtle oak. Drink it over the next decade."Wine Advocate 90 points

Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (Cabernet Blend) 2013 Product #30248 (In Stock)
Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (Cabernet Blend) 2013 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (Cabernet Blend) 2013

Founded in 1967, Chappellet quickly established itself as one of Napa’s premier Cabernet estates and the very first to prove the quality of what is now often called Napa’s Grand Cru:  Pritchard Hill.  The Pritchard Hill Cabernets are still some of Napa’s best and can age for decades – the 1969 is legendary and reportedly still fresh and vibrant today.  But, they also usually need years of cellar time before showing well, and Donn and Molly Chappellet wanted fans to have something to drink tonight.

Mountain Cuvee was created to provide immediate satisfaction and delight, all delivered in spades by this outstanding 2013.  This year it's 43% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, and 5% Cab Franc, all aged 12 months in new and used French oak.  As always, it's a big, rich, wine with layers of currant, black cherry, blackberry, plum, cedar, smoke, and fresh herb aromas and flavors.  The texture is plush and velvety, with the ripe fruit largely hiding the ripe tannins that provide support for enjoying with food or time in cellar.  For all its size and depth, there’s nothing heavy or thick about this classic Napa Bordeaux blend, with the freshness of the great 2013 shining through on the long, elegant, finish.
