Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Product #27594 (In Stock)
Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006

Here's a 2006 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon (mainly Merlot) Right Bank Bordeaux that’s perfectly ripe at just 13% and perfectly mellowed from time in barrel and cellar. On first pour, both the color and aromas are still show very youthful, with primary scents of fresh red currant and black raspberry accented by notes of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and spice. With a little air, the aromas get darker and richer, showing off this wine's beautiful ripeness.

Seven years time has softened the palate to a silky smooth texture and allowed the pretty berry and currant fruit to come forward.  You're starting to find notes of age here as earthy tobacco, fresh mushroom, and cedar peak out, but the overall thrust is still behind the juicy, fresh, fruit.  Very light, sliky, tannins come up at the end to provide classic Bordeaux structure for food – especially that classic pairing of maturing Bordeaux and lamb!  You can enjoy this now while dinner is in the oven and will be delighted to keep on quaffing it until all the clean-up is done.  Fresh, fruity, delicious, and attractively packaged in an authentic Bordeaux wood case – a fantastic value!

Ch Guirauton Graves Blanc 2012 Ch Guirauton Graves Blanc 2012

Here's a classic white Bordeaux fromt the gravelly soils that gave "Graves" its name.  It's a traditional blend of about 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon that sees little or no oak.  Nicely complex aromas of fresh green grass, lemon and orange peel citrus, green melon, and a hint of wet wool - the classic smell of Semillon.  Clean and fresh on the palate with the juicy fruit taking center stage up front and then a bright mineral note emerging on the back.  Fun to just sip and a great wine at table.

Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

The second wine of Tour Haut-Caussan is a beauty in 2010.  It's a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot made in tank and barrel that shows off the perfect ripeness and silky texture of the great 2010 harvest.  Ripe currant and cherry fruit with accents of spice and a touch of dried tobacco.  Bright and juicy on the palate with silky tannins and a nicely lingering dose of tangy fruit.  Right down the middle and fine value.

Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc 2009 Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc 2009

Another great performance for this two-time Wine Spectator Top 100 estate in Moulis-en-Medoc, on the Left Bank just north of Margaux.  Much richer, riper, and softer than the 2005 and 2006 we featured in the past, this is bursting with blackberry and black currant fruit, cedar, tobacco, fresh herb and more.  A coffee/mocha note starts in the middle and expands on the plush, lingering, finish.  Great value in all-around Bordeaux to drink or hold.

Ch Lyonnat Lussac-St. Emilion 2009 Ch Lyonnat Lussac-St. Emilion 2009

Lovely wine and great value.

"Very traditional-old-style Bordeaux from the Milhade family, who make the well-known generic Bordeaux that can live for 20+ years, Recougne. The 2009 Lyonnat, from the satellite appellation of Lussac St.-Emilion, is a blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes of cedar wood, roasted herbs, loamy earth and soil undertones in addition to abundant black cherry and black currant fruit jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, earthy style of wine that saturates the palate and should drink well for up to a decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch Tour Haut-Caussan Medoc 2010 Ch Tour Haut-Caussan Medoc 2010

Very fine value in cellar worthy (but already delicious) Bordeaux!

"A brilliant sleeper of the vintage from this property, which often provides consumers with a value-priced wine that performs like a classified growth, the 2010 is an equal-part blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the northern village of Blaignan. The 2010 comes across like a St. Estephe. Deep ruby/purple, with notes of charcoal/burning embers in addition to black currants, licorice, truffle and graphite, it is full-bodied, rich, authoritative and has light to moderate tannins. It should drink well for 10-12+ years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Hedges Red Mountain Red 2011 Product #28248 (In Stock)
Hedges Red Mountain Red 2011 Hedges Red Mountain Red 2011

A simply magnificent bottle of Washington State red wine that shows off the quality of the Columbia Valley's best vineyards and the magic of blending grapes and sites.  In 2011, the Red Mountain blend is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 16% Syrah, 4% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc, all aged in a mixture of new and used French, American and Hungarian oak.  Wonderfully ripe aromas of cassis, cherry, plum, smoke and spice lead to precise, nicely delineated, flavors of dark red fruits, toast, cut flowers, meat, and more.  Biodynamically grown and perfectly ripe at 13.5% abv (vs. 14.5+% for most other reds of this quality from Washington), it's fascinating now and even better with a little time in cellar.  Bravo!

From the estate that also brings you the wonderful and long-lived Château Calon-Ségur. The first wine is always tannic and structured, and while there's some of that here, too, the overall impact is softer, lusher, and more approachable.  65% Cabernet, 20% Merlot and 15% Cab Franc, generous aromas of black currant, chocolate, and spice are followed on the palate where notes of cedar and tobacco add interest.  Decant for an hour now or cellar for a decade.

This lovely 2009 Margaux value is from a densely planted vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (2%) and Petit Verdot (3%).  The wine ages 18 months in new and used French oak for spice and extra perfume. Very aromatic with candied red fruit and currant, a touch of tobacco, and Christmas spice.  The ripe, plush, fruit flavors are mouthfilling with accents of incense, fresh flowers, and smoky spice.  The fruit cloaks the tannin, making this delicious now and able to grow in cellar for a decade.  Superb value.

Not sure what "Super" descriptor to use for this Bordeaux-based blend (Merlot and Cabernet Franc, mainly) from Alto Adige ("Super Alto Adige"?  No).  But it's one of the most compelling, captivating, and utterly delicious wines for lean steak or lamb loin we've got right now.  Pinot-weight but loaded with lush currant, chocolate, spice and fresh herb aromas and flavors with cassis and coffee on the finish.  Deeply flavored, but still vibrant, this is just about the perfect compromise between folks who love Napa Cab and Right Bank Bordeaux. White Rock Vineyards Claret Napa 2009 Product #28118 (In Stock)
White Rock Vineyards Claret Napa 2009 White Rock Vineyards Claret Napa 2009

A Napa Valley legend, White Rock turns out just 3,000 cases of Chardonnay and Cabernet from it's small vineyard in Soda Canyon - all with old-school Napa style and up-to-date quality.  The 2009 Claret is about 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with equal parts Cab Franc and Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, all aged 32 months in French oak (40% new). Lovely aromas of boysenberry, currant, raspberry and cedar lead to a detailed mouthful of fruit and savory spice flavors with a nice hint of violet.  Firm tannins give this the heft it needs to pair with lamb, although there's enough fruit to just enjoy on it's own now and for 10+ years.

Castello Di Bolgheri Superiore 2009 Product #28651 (In Stock)
Castello Di Bolgheri Superiore 2009 Castello Di Bolgheri Superiore 2009

The rare “Castello” named Italian winery that actually sits inside a castle – in this case a 16th Century monument built by the Counts of Gherardesca (the family that still owns the property today).  The vineyards lie in the heart of Bolgheri, next-door to founding Super-Tuscan Sassicaia and around the corner from Ornellaia.  This, the estate’s top wine, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot aged for about 16 months in French oak (20% new).  It’s the rare Bolgheri blend that’s as admired in Italy (it earned the coveted Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso) as it is by International critics.  And, it’s delicious right now even though it will improve for a decade more.  At these prices, it’s a do not miss deal.

“I like the aromas of walnuts and blackberries with hints of coffee beans. Full body, with soft and velvety tannins and a delicious sweet berry aftertaste. Delicious now. But will improve with age in the bottle.”  James Suckling 93 points

“The sweet black currant and black cherry fruit flavors are framed by cedar, licorice and saline mineral elements in this rich, supple red. Displays plenty of structure, with the firm tannins buried by ample flesh. Fine length. Best from 2014 through 2024. 1,650 cases made.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Keermont Red Blend 2011 Product #28366 (In Stock)
Keermont Red Blend 2011 Keermont Red Blend 2011

Smell and taste this blind and you'll find yourself thinking of expensive Cabernet or Cab blends from Napa Valley's Spring Mountain. There's plenty of ripe fruit on the nose and palate - black currant, black raspberry, and dark plum - with accents of bitter chocolate, coffee and spice. The texture is lush in the middle before Spring-Mountain-like acidity and minerality lends a refreshing tang to the fruit and firm tannins providing support. A wonderful blend of lushness and power (and value!) that gives a fine taste of the quality coming out of the best estates in South Africa these days.

"If you want to see the new South Africa and catch a glimpse of what the future beholds, then look no further than Keermont....The 2011 Keermont is a blend of 49% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 6% Syrah matured for 24 months in French barrels of which 20% is new. It offers lovely brambly black fruit on the nose with touches of black currant pastilles emerging with time. The oak is very well-integrated and complements rather than dominates the fruit and with time, there is just a suggestion of cocoa emerging. The palate is succulent on the entry with lavish spicy black fruit. It is very harmonious and suave with a caressing, voluminous finish that lingers long in the mouth, with white pepper and fennel notes lending complexity. Lovely! Drink now-2018."Wine Advocate 93 points

Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010 Product #26909 (In Stock)
Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010 Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010

If you look around, you’ll notice that we don’t carry a lot of Virginia wine – so, you might wonder, why do we have several selections from Glen Manor?  The answer is simple – owner/winemaker Jeff White is doing something special out near Front Royal, Virginia.  The wines are all top quality wines for their price point.  Not “top quality Virginia wines” – just “top quality” period.

The 2008 Hodder Hill single vineyard blend of Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is a great example.  The aromas are complex and forward, featuring blackberry/blueberry fruit, coffee, orange peel and spicy tobacco notes.  In the mouth it’s full-bodied and nicely concentrated, but elegant layered, too.  The texture and flavors suggest a top Washington state blend with firm casis/currant, coffee and tobacco flavors and just a touch of fresh herb.  Drinking well now and built to age 5-10 years.  Great stuff.
