Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Product #29364 (In Stock)
Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012

Like it's neighbor Cahors, Buzet was once a bustling source of robust reds for export to England and beyond (before those nasty Bordelais started taxing wine moving up the Gironde to the sea). Today, it's starting to reemerge as a fine value source for rich, soft, Bordeaux-style wines without the Bordeaux price tag.

This little beauty from the Buzet co-op is a fine example of what can be done with Bordeaux grapes here in France's Southwest - and one of the few no-sulfur added wines in the store.  Cabernet for structure and Merlot for plum fruit with time in fine oak barrels (the co-op makes their own!) for a soft, supple, complexity.  Plump, ripe cherry and currant fruit gets just the right touch of spice, tobacco, and fresh herb to go with the finely tannic finish. Very good value here.

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml Product #29814 (In Stock)

Half Bottles!  Perfect for an evening sip.

"A winner from the Milhade family, Chateau Recougne has a reputation for lasting 20-30 years in the bottle in many vintages. I do not think the 2011 has that much staying power, but it over-delivers in body, richness, density and length. It is a shockingly good effort displaying a dark ruby color as well as abundant notes of earth, licorice and black currants, surprising body, richness and depth. A major sleeper of the vintage, it should drink well for 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2012 Product #28504 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2012 Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2012

A classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%). This is a soft, fruit filled, take on Bordeaux that fills your mouth with juicy red currant and black berry fruit accented by a touch of spice.  Subtle notes of fresh herb and tobacco keep this anchored in Bordeaux, and there’s just the enough ripe tannin to let it work well at table (but not enough to get in the way of solo sipping).

Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010 Product #29232 (In Stock)
Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010 Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010

Mostly Merlot, with 10% Carmenere and 5% Petit Verdot for color and structure.  Unusually - at least at this price point - the wine ages entirely in new and 1 year-old oak casks for a year. The result is a richly fruit-filled Bordeaux - cherry, cassis, plum - with sophisticated accents of smoke, cedar, and herb.  Almost California fruit levels, but plenty of Bordeaux class at the end.

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 Product #29360 (In Stock)
Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010

Even better than the 2009, with one touch more richness and depth.

"Admirers of the so-called “little” wines of Bordeaux will no doubt be familiar with Recougne, which has been imported into the United States for nearly thirty years and can last for two decades or more. The 2010, which they now call “Vieilles Vignes,” exhibits aromas and flavors of cedarwood, spice box, black currants and berries. This medium-bodied, well-made blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc should drink well for 7-8 years. (Although last year I drank a 1952 that was still quite tasty.)"Wine Advocate 87-88 points

A traditional blend of about 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon that sees little or no oak.  Nicely complex aromas of fresh green grass, lemon and orange citrus, with a hint of wet wool - the classic smell of Semillon.  Clean and fresh and very brisk on the palate with the juicy fruit taking center stage up front and then loads of citrus and a bright mineral note emerging on the back.

Bulgaria has plenty of fine wine potential, and it's starting to emerge in wines like this gem.  It's a blend of 66% Merlot plus Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in used oak for a year and in bottle for several more.  There's a nice velvety texture to the palate of dark fruit, tobacco, and earthy spice.  Mellow and mature and a bit like a rich Bordeaux, this is very nice value.

Saint Jacques De Siran Bordeaux Superieur 2012 Product #29678 (In Stock)
Saint Jacques De Siran Bordeaux Superieur 2012 Saint Jacques De Siran Bordeaux Superieur 2012

The classy package – an elegant, traditional label and stylish wood case – and famous name – Chateau Siran, one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux’s Margaux region – drew our attention to this bold Bordeaux. But it was tasting it and noticing how much more rich, powerful, and deeply flavored it is than most $30-$50 Bordeaux that convinced us to bring it to you!

Chateau Siran was founded in 1428, taking its name from Saint Siran. In the 1700s, it passed to the Lautrec family, grandparents of the painter Toulouse-Lautrec, before going to the Miailhe family in 1858. Siran made its reputation for supple, smooth, and aromatic wines from the gravelly plateau of Margaux (home of 1st Growth Chateau Margaux). But this delicious value comes from the Miailhe's vineyards just along the borders of Margaux, sharing similar soils and microclimate, but lacking the "prestige" name (and price tag).

It’s a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in used barrels (for smoky complexity and silky structure) and steel tanks (for fresh fruit). In 2012, it offers up a super rich Bordeaux nose of black currant, violets, crushed herb, coffee, cedar, chocolate and 5-spice. On the palate, the fruit turns a touch more red, juicy, and high-toned on the palate - redcurrant, strawberry, and even a touch of cranberry - with layered accents of chocolate, cedar, tobacco and spice. There very fine definition and saturation to the flavors and sweetness to the fruit from front to back with juicy acids and nicely polished tannins supporting the lingering flavors of currant, coffee, cedar and spice. Delicious right now, even better in 2017, and a fine treat through 2020.

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2009 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.

Clos Des Lunes Lune Blanche Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Product #29679 (In Stock)
Clos Des Lunes Lune Blanche Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Clos Des Lunes Lune Blanche Bordeaux Blanc 2013

The famous Graves estate Dom de Chevalier makes this classic white Bordeaux from vines planted in Sauturnes.  Dry, fresh, savory, and long on the palate and finish.

"The 2013 Clos des Lunes is a dry Semillon-based white from a parcel between Giraud and Y'Quem in Sauternes. White flowers, pears, mint and white stone fruits are all laced together in a vibrant, stony wine to drink over the next few years, while the flavors remain crisp. I very much like the sense of tension here."  Vinous 89-91 points

"Delicious, with racy tarragon, lemon pulp and blanched almond notes, as well as richer white peach, tangerine and heather accents. This pulls everything together on the racy, well-detailed finish. Drink now through 2016."Wine Spectator 90 points

Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011 Product #29492 (In Stock)
Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011 Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011

Most "value" Bordeaux carries a regional "Bordeaux" or "Medoc" label, so we were excited to find this gem from the prestigious commune of Saint-Estephe showing loads of Saint-Estephe character in the tricky 2011 vintage.   It's rich and deep, with more robust black currant fruit complementing its spice, cedar, and black olive notes.  As you'd expect from a mainly-Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux, there's good structure here but also lots of ripe fruit (if no overt fruitiness).  This will develop nicely over the next 5-8 years in cellar, but will also drink well now with lamb, pork chops, or beef.  Fine value.

An outstanding St. Emilion that's dead classic in every way other than price.  From 30 year-old vines of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc and aged in all neutral oak, this opens with generous scents of currant, coffee, plum, blackberry, herb and tobacco.  In the mouth, utterly delicious and full of black fruit (berry, cherry, currant) served up with a handful of dark herb.  Plump in the middle and then focused and firm on the finish, you can drink this now with lamb or beef or wait 4-8 years if you'd rather.

Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2012 Product #28837 (In Stock)
Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2012 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2012

As Steve Tanzer says, "Insiders know that Guidalberto, first made in vintage 2000, is often an excellent wine and a really smart buy, even if it's much less famous than Sassicaia. Depending on the vintage, about 20% of declassified Sassicaia finds its way into the Guidalberto."  Sassicaia's second label is a 60/40 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend aged 15 months in mainly French oak.  It was hard work to wrest a pure, elegant, wine from the hot 2012 harvest, still with plenty of currant, blackberry, and cherry fruit nicely balanced by hints of warm spice and dried tobacco.  Decant for an hour now or hold it for a few years and watch the fruit come forward and firm tannins mellow.  A lovely super-Tuscan from the makers of Sassicaia.

"Aromas of blackberry and blueberry, with hints of wet earth and spices such as cloves. Full body with round, chewy tannins but polished and caressing. A juicy, succulent finish. One of the best ever. Drink or hold."  James Suckling 93 points

"A compact style, with cherry, strawberry, earth and tobacco flavors matched to a firm structure. This is chewy, but retains a sense of elegance courtesy of the vibrant structure. Fine length. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2016 through 2025."Wine Spectator 91 points
