Ch Puy Servain Bergerac Rose 2012 Ch Puy Servain Bergerac Rose 2012

You'll find fine rosé in virtually every corner of France, including Bordeaux - after all, what else would the Bordalais want to drink after a hot day working in the vines?  This beauty from the satellite appellation of Bergerac is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon bled off the vats used for red wine.  Very fresh and winey on the nose with definite aromas of tobacco leaf, fresh herb, and tangy cherry.  In the mouth the herb comes up strong and clear over the cherry and watermelon fruit and a bright beam of acidity cuts under the rich texture.  Finishes spicy and mouthwatering with fine length and freshness.

Ch La Chapelle Du Couvent Blaye 2009 Product #26362 (In Stock)
Ch La Chapelle Du Couvent Blaye 2009 Ch La Chapelle Du Couvent Blaye 2009

From the sturdy wood case to the sophisticated label and sophisticated aromas and flavors, this is the kind of young Bordeaux you’d expect to cost $30 or more.  Right out of the gate, classic Bordeaux aromas of blackcurrant, black raspberry, cedar and tobacco with just a hint of roasted coffee.  Very polished and elegantly textured in the mouth where the blackcurrant fruit shines and accents of more cedar, coffee and bitter chocolate are lifted by sophisticated acidity.  On the finish, the blackcurrant, tangy cherry and coffee flavors linger nicely as fine, polished, tannins provide support and a last whiff of uncured tobacco curls around at the end. If you enjoy just drinking fine Bordeaux by itself, this is a beauty – silky, perfumed, and subtle – but it will really shine with beef, lamb, or pork loin as well as earthy mushrooms with thyme.

La Cappuccina Madego Rosso 2011 La Cappuccina Madego Rosso 2011

Certified organic, winner of the "Un Biccheri" prize from Gambero Rosso, and a "super-Tuscan-style" steal at this price!  Like the more famous super-Tuscan reds from Bolgheri, this is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (10%) and Carmenere (10%) that's actually pretty traditional for this part of Northeastern Italy.  Aromas and flavors feature ripe redcurrant and cherry fruit with accents of aged tobacco and sweet spice. It's nicely fresh and softly textured, but packed with easy-drinking flavor and plenty of fruit and tobacco complexity. It'll handle anything you pull off the grill, but will be especially delicious with rich pork or sausage dishes.

Santa Ema Amplus One 2008 Product #27110 (In Stock)
Santa Ema Amplus One 2008 Santa Ema Amplus One 2008

A sophisticated, complex, and very, very, tasty blend of Chile’s own Carmenère (75%) plus dark and meaty Syrah (20%) and blue fruited and mineral Carignan, all aged in French oak for 12 months.  The stylish flavors and satiny structure will have you thinking this is a $30 Bordeaux from a fine vintage (like 2009) or perhaps an unusually restrained and sophisticated Napa Meritage blend.  Only your wallet needs to know differently!

“The 2008 Amplus One is made up of 75% Carmenere, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan. It displays aromas of damp earth, balsamic, herbs, blueberry, and black plum. On the palate, it reveals some elegance, savory flavors, good volume, and a bit of structure. This tasty effort will provide pleasure over the next 6 years.”Wine Advocate 91 points

“Impressive and generous, this gets going with full berry and chocolaty oak aromas. The well-structured palate bears lightly herb-tinged flavors of berry and chocolate. It finishes dry, peppery and sturdy as a cinder block.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

“Sleek, with nice focus and purity for the vintage, as the damson plum, cherry and red currant fruit is carried by fine-grained structure. Lingering whiffs of tobacco and mineral mark the finish. Carmenère, Syrah, Carignan.”Wine Spectator 90 points

Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana 2011 Product #26117 (In Stock)
Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana 2011 Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana 2011

A blend of three Bordeaux grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc – plus a helping of smoky, meaty, Syrah.  The grapes are grown in a fine vineyard in Eastern Tuscany, where they are planted to tight spacing and hand harvested at perfect ripeness.  The grapes soak for 22 days in old wood casks and then ferment and age in temperature controlled stainless steel.

The wine’s dark, saturated, color leads you to expect a powerful, even heavy, red.  But everything here is actually wonderfully fresh and vibrant.  The aromas feature redcurrant, crushed fresh herb, dark chocolate, and a dash of spice.  The palate is luxuriously textured – full but round and velvety – and the pure flavors of currant, cherry, juicy plum get complexity from notes of tobacco, herb, and bitter chocolate.  A bright squirt of fresh acidity lifts the flavors up and keeps things refreshing on the pretty, almost floral, finish.  The marriage of ripe fruit, juicy acids, and silky tannins make this a great sipping wine, but even better with foods like grilled or roasted meats, sautéed mushrooms, or even pasta and red sauce.  To drink now and for 5 or so years.

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch Tour Haut-Caussan Medoc 2010 Ch Tour Haut-Caussan Medoc 2010

Very fine value in cellar worthy (but already delicious) Bordeaux!

"A brilliant sleeper of the vintage from this property, which often provides consumers with a value-priced wine that performs like a classified growth, the 2010 is an equal-part blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the northern village of Blaignan. The 2010 comes across like a St. Estephe. Deep ruby/purple, with notes of charcoal/burning embers in addition to black currants, licorice, truffle and graphite, it is full-bodied, rich, authoritative and has light to moderate tannins. It should drink well for 10-12+ years."Wine Advocate 90 points

The second wine of top Saint Emilion's Troplong Mondo, this is still mainly Merlot but with more Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc than the "big wine."  Like so many of the better 2004s, this has developed beautifully and now delivers a lovely expression of velvety St. Emilion.  Aromas of currant, plum, cedar and tobacco carry through on the silky palate where a note of dusty cocoa emerges.  Lovely stuff with beef, lamb, or even all by itself.

Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010 Product #26909 (In Stock)
Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010 Glen Manor Hodder Hill Red 2010

If you look around, you’ll notice that we don’t carry a lot of Virginia wine – so, you might wonder, why do we have several selections from Glen Manor?  The answer is simple – owner/winemaker Jeff White is doing something special out near Front Royal, Virginia.  The wines are all top quality wines for their price point.  Not “top quality Virginia wines” – just “top quality” period.

The 2008 Hodder Hill single vineyard blend of Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is a great example.  The aromas are complex and forward, featuring blackberry/blueberry fruit, coffee, orange peel and spicy tobacco notes.  In the mouth it’s full-bodied and nicely concentrated, but elegant layered, too.  The texture and flavors suggest a top Washington state blend with firm casis/currant, coffee and tobacco flavors and just a touch of fresh herb.  Drinking well now and built to age 5-10 years.  Great stuff.

Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc Magnum 2005 Product #27191 (In Stock)
Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc Magnum 2005 Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc Magnum 2005

With all the hype lately about the 2009 and 2010 vintages in Bordeaux, it’s easy to overlook 2005, the original “vintage of the century.”  Which is a good thing, I think, because as prices on good wines from these recent vintages have soared, the excellent 2005s have remained very solid value even as they start to enter their long drinking windows.  Case in point – Chateau Malmaison’s 2005 Moulis en Medoc, a Left Bank blend of barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Baronne Nadine de Rothschild.

I’m sure the 2005 Malmaison is delicious in regular bottles, but it’s certainly magnificent in magnum!  With extra time in cellar at the winery, this double bottle of Bordeaux has advanced slowly, but is now open for business and ready to enjoy.  Aromas of blackcurrant, smoke, cedar and tobacco lead to a rich, velvety, mouthful of currant, black cherry, licorice and spice flavors.  Lovely texture here in the mid-palate and on the long, layered, finish where dusty cocoa and spice flavors linger over ripe tannins.  Already delicious with roast beef or grilled lamb, this will continue to improve for at least another decade, possibly longer.  Impressive wine, impressive package, and very impressive value!

"Very dark purple in color, showing aromas of mineral, dark chocolate and licorice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Layered and pretty. Very, very balanced. Close to the excellent 2000. Best after 2012."Wine Spectator 91 points
