Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #27006 (In Stock)
Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

This is a big "bang for the buck" Cabernet from Chile that reminds you how Chile first established its global reputation for top quality Cab at rock-bottom prices.  Fruit for this wine grows near Chile’s Coastal Mountain range in the Colchagua Valley.  Daytime high temperatures can reach 98 degrees here, but cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean cool the fruit at night to preserve freshness and acidity.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon delivers plenty of classic Cabernet fruit –  currant, plum, and blackberries.  It also display's Chile's trademark whiff of herbs and some appealing tobacco aromas, giving the wine more complexity than you’d expect at this price.  In the mouth, it’s juicy and satisfying, with an extra dose of black raspberry and currant fruit.  The juicy acids keep everything in balance and make this a flexible companion with a wide range of foods.

Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Product #25534 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Red Dust Shiraz has been a favorite here for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  The 2008 Clos Robert Cab is made from a mix of purchased fruit that Bob vinifies and wine he buys from a range of suppliers across California.

The 2008 Clos Robert is terrific blend of California ripeness and Bordeaux style.  The aromas and flavors lead with big red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that fill your mouth from side to side without ever becoming heavy or clumsy.  Notes of dark chocolate, mocha, and sweet spice add complexity and juicy acids and fine tannins keep the wine precise and refreshing.  Certainly a great match for a grilled burger, but this will stand up to strip steak and delight on its own as well.

Ray Signorello's estate wines run in the $50 category, but even top winemakers need a nice bottle of Cab for parties or weeknight supper!  Ray sources grapes for this from friends and neighbors and makes it in a fruit-filled, easy-drinking, style. Loads of juicy blackcurrant and red berry fruit are accented by a dash of chocolate and hint of licorice aromas and flavors.  Round and stylish in the mouth, notes of cranberry and cherry liquor linger nicely in the end over bright acidity and fine tannin.  A very fine burger or lamb chop bottle that you can just sip on all night long.

Angulo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon La Consulta 2011 Product #27168 (In Stock)
Angulo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon La Consulta 2011 Angulo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon La Consulta 2011

No question: this is less "serious" than Mariano Innocenti's 2011 Malbec, but, boy, is it fun to drink! Fresh, generous, aromas of currant, herb and spice mingle with notes of blackberry and tangy cherry in the mouth. A licorice root note gives this a little complexity, but not too much - this juicy, clean, and bright Cabernet is meant to enjoy with friends and a nice, fresh, burger.

"Lively aromas of cassis, black cherry, minerals and licorice. Supple on entry, then fine-grained and a bit less pliant in the middle, with dark berry and licorice flavors enlivened by minerality. Finishes firmly tannic but not dry or hard." International Wine Cellar 88 points

A consistent winner in the "value Cab" category for a few years now, the 2011 Educated Guess is even richer and more full of unctuous blackcurrant, vanilla, milk chocolate, and spice character than usual.  A blend of 100% Napa fruit (mainly Rutherford and St. Helena this year) with a good dose of French and American Oak, this is classic Napa steak or sipping Cabernet with a creamy texture and just enough fine tannin to hold its shape.

Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2010 Product #27167 (In Stock)
Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2010 Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2010

This robust, ripe, California Cabernet is even more impressive considering the challenging 2010 vintage, one of the coolest and longest ever.  Winemaker Michael Martini took the best Cabernet Sauvingon from thee different Alexander Valley Vineyards and then blended in 10% Petit Sirah to add more color and ripe black fruit.  Aging for 14 months in a mixture of new and used oaks let the wine come together and added a dash of chocolate and spice, but avoided any overt oaky flavors – important for a winery whose founder hated the taste of wood!  Dark and robust now, but soft enough on the long finish to enjoy with grilled meats or a 30 minute decant.  Excellent value.

“Martini’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is very tight today, but it nevertheless dazzles with expressive dark red fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and dried flowers. An exotic, utterly beguiling Cabernet, the 2010 is long on personality and character. Tar, licorice and iron are some of the dark, brooding notes that add muscle and an element of darkness that is undeniably appealing. Readers will need to give the 2010 at least a few years in bottle. The future sure looks bright here. Best of all, within the context of California Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2010 is a steal. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”Wine Advocate 91+ points

Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009 Product #26775 (In Stock)
Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009 Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009

Ladera is best known as a Howell Mountain Cab specialists, but we prefer the Napa Valley designate which includes a dash of Petit Verdot and Syrah. As the Advocate suggests, the 2009 is for drinking now - but how is that bad?!

"Ladera’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a relatively simple, straightforward offering in this vintage. Plums, sweet spices, crushed flowers and menthol are woven together nicely. The wine’s mid-weight structure suggests it is best enjoyed upon release and for a handful of years thereafter. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019."Wine Advocate 89 points

Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2007 Product #25702 (In Stock)
Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2007 Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2007

Worthy’s Sophia’s Cuvee is the second wine of Axios, a Napa “cult Cabernet” producer best known for its $125 flagship Cab.  It’s been one of our best-selling Napa Cabs ever since its 2001 debut vintage earned 92 points and a place on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list.  Since then, it’s been a super-reliable bottle of Napa Cab with ripe, supple, currant, smoke and green herb flavors and a darkly fruited finish.

Now, the 2007 vintage has arrived and there’s been a BIG step up!  Maybe it’s just the vintage – 2007 is one of the best ever in Napa – but this Worthy is exploding with black currant, blackberry and black plum fruit sweetened with a generous dash of sweet baking spice and a sprinkle of dusty cocoa and shaved bitter chocolate.  Mouth filling and rich, the 2007 Worth remains graceful and elegant and oh so easy to drink.  A winner and a great value.

"The 2007 Sophia’s Cuvee (a 8,000-case blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec) is a big-time sleeper of the vintage. An outstanding example of Napa Bordeaux varietals, it displays loads of white chocolate, creme de cassis, licorice, and a touch of subtle smoke in a medium to full-bodied style. Silky tannins, flesh, and plenty of concentration characterize this wine, which has no hard edges. It is a beauty to drink over the next 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Another fine vintage for Paul Hobb's "entry-level" Napa Cab.  As WA said about the nearly identical 2008:  "A terrific bargain in Napa Cabernet...a brilliant perfume of smoked herbs, sweet creme de cassis and blackberry fruit, incense and hints of charcoal and herbs. Savory, broad and expansive on the palate, this full-bodied, supple-textured effort is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet that is silky enough to be drunk early in life and over the next 10-15 years."

White Rock Vineyards Cabernet Napa Laureate 2007 Product #26738 (In Stock)
White Rock Vineyards Cabernet Napa Laureate 2007 White Rock Vineyards Cabernet Napa Laureate 2007

Old-fashioned Napa Cabernet from very up-to-date, but respectful of history, wine growers working in Napa's Soda Canyon.  The vines grow on terraces up the side of the Canyon and get minimal water and no chemical fertilizers or herbicides.  The natural vineyard work continues in the winery (6000 sq ft of caves quarried to build the winery house) where the wines rest until ready to release.

The Laureate Cabernet comes from the highest elevation Cabernet vines and opens with youthful aromas of red currant, tobacco leaf, fresh herb, eucalyptus and coffee.  In the mouth it's rich and bright with plenty of red fruit and spice.  The finish is long, persistent and firm with ripe fruit flavors lingering nicely.  Tasty now and better over the next decade plus.

Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2010 Product #26918 (In Stock)
Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2010 Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2010

As Wine Advocate says, ""It’s great to see this historic property making wines that live up to its reputation."  Wait if you can...or just decant it a while now.

"Chateau Montelena’s 2010 Cabernets are among the highlights in this set of new releases, although the 2011 Chardonnay is pretty terrific as well. Bo Barrett credits his experiences in 1987 and 1988 as a big reason he was able to handle the stresses of the 2010 vintage, in particular the late season heat spikes that gave growers fits. A big, mouth filling wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the personality of the vintage in its intense fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure in this deep, resonant Cabernet Sauvignon. Mint, flowers and sweet red berries are some of the nuances that are woven into the finish. This is far from an easygoing Napa Cabernet. Although delicious today, it should drink well for a number of years. Another year or so in bottle should help the elements come together even more fully. The 2010 is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."Wine Advocate 92 points
