Fruit for this wine grows near Chile’s Coastal Mountain range in the Colchagua Valley. Daytime high temperatures can reach 98 degrees here, but cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean cool the fruit at night to preserve freshness and acidity.
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon delivers plenty of classic Cabernet fruit – currant, plum, and blackberries. It also display's Chile's trademark whiff of herbs and some appealing tobacco aromas, giving the wine more complexity than you’d expect at this price. In the mouth, it’s juicy and satisfying, with an extra dose of black raspberry and currant fruit. The 2008 Clos Robert Cab is made from a mix of purchased fruit that Bob vinifies and wine he buys from a range of suppliers across California.
The 2008 Clos Robert is terrific blend of California ripeness and Bordeaux style. The aromas and flavors lead with big red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that fill your mouth from side to side without ever becoming heavy or clumsy. Notes of dark chocolate, mocha, and sweet spice add complexity and juicy acids and fine tannins keep the wine precise and refreshing. No question: this is less "serious" than Mariano Innocenti's 2011 Malbec, but, boy, is it fun to drink! Fresh, generous, aromas of currant, herb and spice mingle with notes of blackberry and tangy cherry in the mouth. A licorice root note gives this a little complexity, but not too much - this juicy, clean, and bright Cabernet is meant to enjoy with friends and a nice, fresh, burger.

This robust, ripe, California Cabernet is even more impressive considering the challenging 2010 vintage, one of the coolest and longest ever. Winemaker Michael Martini took the best Cabernet Sauvingon from thee different Alexander Valley Vineyards and then blended in 10% Petit Sirah to add more color and ripe black fruit. Aging for 14 months in a mixture of new and used oaks let the wine come together and added a dash of chocolate and spice, but avoided any overt oaky flavors – important for a winery whose founder hated the taste of wood! Dark and robust now, but soft enough on the long finish to enjoy with grilled meats or a 30 minute decant. Excellent value.
“Martini’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is very tight today, but it nevertheless dazzles with expressive dark red fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and dried flowers. An exotic, utterly beguiling Cabernet, the 2010 is long on personality and character. Tar, licorice and iron are some of the dark, brooding notes that add muscle and an element of darkness that is undeniably appealing. Readers will need to give the 2010 at least a few years in bottle. Old-fashioned Napa Cabernet from very up-to-date, but respectful of history, wine growers working in Napa's Soda Canyon. The vines grow on terraces up the side of the Canyon and get minimal water and no chemical fertilizers or herbicides. The natural vineyard work continues in the winery (6000 sq ft of caves quarried to build the winery house) where the wines rest until ready to release.
The Laureate Cabernet comes from the highest elevation Cabernet vines and opens with youthful aromas of red currant, tobacco leaf, fresh herb, eucalyptus and coffee. In the mouth it's rich and bright with plenty of red fruit and spice. The finish is long, persistent and firm with ripe fruit flavors lingering nicely. "Chateau Montelena’s 2010 Cabernets are among the highlights in this set of new releases, although the 2011 Chardonnay is pretty terrific as well. Bo Barrett credits his experiences in 1987 and 1988 as a big reason he was able to handle the stresses of the 2010 vintage, in particular the late season heat spikes that gave growers fits. A big, mouth filling wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the personality of the vintage in its intense fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure in this deep, resonant Cabernet Sauvignon. Mint, flowers and sweet red berries are some of the nuances that are woven into the finish. This is far from an easygoing Napa Cabernet. Although delicious today, it should drink well for a number of years. Another year or so in bottle should help the elements come together even more fully.
