Villa Botanica Cabernet Syrah Pays d'Oc 2011 Villa Botanica Cabernet Syrah Pays d'Oc 2011

For everyone who wants rich Cabernet Sauvignon flavors and texture without California's elevated alcohols (and very elevated price tags!).  From 25 year-old, sustainably farmed, vines grown along the Canal du Midi in France's Languedoc region, not far from Carcassonne. The fruit achieved wonderful ripeness in 2011, with the Cabernet Sauvignon delivering blackcurrant, fresh herb, and spice notes and the 30% Syrah dark blackberry, blueberry, and smoke aromas and flavors. No oak here, but plenty of smoked mineral and earth complexity to go with he gushing blueberry/blackberry juicy on the soft, lush, finish. A great grilling, party, and sipping Cabernet with just the right touch of French flair!

Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #28169 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Chapoutier Bila-Haut wines have been favorites for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  Although how he managed to find such high-quality fruit in the difficult 2011 vintage is a mystery!

The 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petite Sirah and 10% Petit Verdot, all aged for a few months in used french oak.  It's full of lush currant, cassis, and black plum fruit with just the right accent of Bordeaux-like fresh herb.  Full-bodied and nicely ripe, the touches of oak spice and bitter chocolate add more complexity and the fine tannin will handle a steak easily - but there's no reason not to drink this all by itself. Hands down, the best value we've seen in California over the past two years.

Hedges CMS Red 2011 Product #27560 (In Stock)
Hedges CMS Red 2011 Hedges CMS Red 2011

Washington state winery has its roots in Old-World winemaking, eschews scores, and is all about showcasing the potential of the terroir in Washington. Devoid of flash, pretention, or inflated prices, this winery represents the kind of honest winemaking and independent spirit that we love to support.  It doesn't hurt that the wine's delicious!

In 2011, the CMS is once again a blend of Cabernet and Merlot with a dash of Syrah. You'll find plenty of dark fruit, earth, and baking spices on the nose. On the palate the fruit flavors are even richer and more satisfying than last year, but the structure and juicy acidity keeps it all in balance. A screaming value that's fabulous for a grilled steak or a big, juicy burger!

Hacienda Del Plata Zagal Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #28407 (In Stock)
Hacienda Del Plata Zagal Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Hacienda Del Plata Zagal Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

A delicious bottle of Cabernet full of flavor and character.  Smells great with big scents of cherry and currant plus a touch of mint.  Then juicy and ripe red plum, cassis, blackberry and raspberry fruit flavors with a dash of crushed mint and a dusting of cocoa powder.  Dark chocolate comes up with air and the fruit gets darker and deeper, but everything stays fresh with fine tannins and nice oak shadings on the finish. A lot of richness and depth here for the money.

Mossback Cabernet Sauvignon Chalk Hill 2010 Product #27953 (In Stock)
Mossback Cabernet Sauvignon Chalk Hill 2010 Mossback Cabernet Sauvignon Chalk Hill 2010

The Chalk Hill AVA in the northeastern corner of the Russian River Valley includes only a half-dozen wineries - most famously Chalk Hill Winery - and about 1,600 acres of vineyard. A warm thermal belt running along the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains and a unique, chalky-appearing soil (actually decomposed volcanic ash) make this one of Sonoma's best sites for Chardonnay and Bordeaux varietals.

Normally, you'd expect to pay $40+ for handmade Cabernet from Chalk Hill, but the folks at Mossback have somehow figured out how to deliver 100% Chalk Hill quality at about 50% of the price!  A classic style, with aromas of dark cherry and currant fruit complemented by notes of vanilla, licorice, crushed herb and baking spice.  Rich but with a juicy lift, the flavors stay focused on black cherry and currant, dark chocolate, and macerated blackberry.  Plenty of grip and focused acidity support a long, lingering, finish.  Great steak wine with a fine future in front of it!

Firriato Altavilla Cabernet Sauvignon Sicily 2012 Product #28768 (In Stock)
Firriato Altavilla Cabernet Sauvignon Sicily 2012 Firriato Altavilla Cabernet Sauvignon Sicily 2012

This wine from the very skilled folks at Sicily's Firriato used to be a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola - and that was plenty of juicy fun.  But, it turns out that their Cabernet didn't really need any help from Nero,  or at least that's what you'll conclude when you taste this delicious bottle of Cab Sauv that just happens to be from Sicily.  Big aromas and flavors of dark chocolate, black currant, black raspberry, and accents of fresh herb and spice run through this generous wine.  Plenty of warm-climate Cabernet flavor (think Paso Robles) but also a juicy, fresh, mouthwatering Italian structure and freshness.  This will be great with lean steaks, burgers, or grilled mushrooms - and a great value, too!

The 2011 edition of this rich Cabernet Sauvignon from Galilee ranked #5 on Jewish Week's list of top Kosher wines, and it was certainly one of the very best values.  The 2012 gain delivers ripe black currant and cherry fruit with light herbal accents and spice and mocha touches from 5 months in French oak.  Soft and easygoing, the light tannin will handle lamb but not get in the way of solo sipping, either.

Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28698 (In Stock)
Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

We don't see this nearly often enough - a super-star winemaker who could easily fill his days (and pocketbook) doing just his own wines and consulting for a few high-end boutiques rolling up his sleeves, digging in, and making California wine you can afford to drink every day.  The winemaker is Aaron Pott - Food & Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2012 - and his partner is former sommelier Joseph Carr.  Together, Aaron and Joseph are creating a line of fresh and food-friendly wines with plenty of Napa Character and style – but at an eye-opening value price.

You’ll get good sense of why everyone is so excited about Napa’s 2012 Cabernets here, starting with the sweet and savory aromas of cherry, currant, bitter chocolate, roasted meat, and crushed mint.  The flavors follow the nose at first, but with air gain breadth and creaminess, coating your palate with layers of crushed blackberry, cassis, roasted meat, and rich chocolate.  Delicious stuff, but it’s the elegant structure, perfect balance, and sophisticated tannins lying underneath the long finish that are really exciting in a wine at this price.  A “real deal, real steal” bottle of Napa Cabernet you should not miss!

Thurston Wolfe Cabernet Sauvignon "the Teacher" 2011 Product #27538 (In Stock)
Thurston Wolfe Cabernet Sauvignon Thurston Wolfe Cabernet Sauvignon

The undisputed “Ugliest Label In the Store” award winner is actually a terrific bottle of Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. As Wine Advocate said, “Thurston Wolfe is an artisanal producer of wines with personality. The production of these wines ranges from 48 cases to 588 cases so interested parties are advised to get on the mailing list.”

The 2011 is 100% Cabernet from three vineyard’s in the famous Horse Heaven Hills region, The Teacher gets 21 months in French, American and Hungarian oak to smooth out any rough edges.  The aromas are big and complex: grilled bread, pencil lead, Asian spice, violets, and loads of dark black fruit.  Then, a big mouthful of ripe black fruits and oak spice in a full bodied, rich, package.  Nicely ripe and firm tannin give support and make this a great choice for anything roasted or grilled.

Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28433 (In Stock)
Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

Twenty Rows was founded to bring you “Napa Valley Wines You Can Drink Every Day” and, while the whole line-up is impressive, the benchmark Napa Cab remains the standout.  A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon softened with 10% Merlot, one taste and you’ll see that Twenty Rows is a big step up from even very good $20 California Cabs - in fact, it competes nicely with many $30-$40 Napa reds.

The 2012 is the best we've tasted here, with a new level of richness and depth to the black currant/cherry fruit and accents of cocoa and roasted coffee.  Still dense and rich, but with more lift and earthy complexity and a nice dark chocolate note on the smooth finish.  Drinking well now and sure to improve over 3-4 years.

Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28468 (In Stock)
Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

Not a lot of history here, with 2004 the Bonnano family's first vintage.  But, there's plenty of classic Napa Valley Cabernet character and class in the bottle.  A blend of Valley floor fruit from Rutherford, Oakville, St. Helena and Oak Knoll aged 20 months in (mostly used) French oak. Very Napa aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, crushed herb and cedar with a rich texture and plush, soft, tannins.  A prickle of juicy acidity at the end makes this especially fine with richer meats, but you can certainly just sip it, too.  Nice value.
