Michael Honig, his family, and long-time winemaker Kristin Belair turn out some of the best, most consistent, Napa Valley Cabernet, especially in big bottle.  The care taken in sustainable farming and hands-on winemaking shows in this rich, spicy, Cabernet with plenty of dark berry, spice and cedar notes.  Accents of anise, licorice and dark chocolate add even more complexity.

Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Product #28944 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010

Shirley Roy never meant to make two wines from her 20 or so acre estate in a crook of Napa’s Soda Canyon.  But, winemaker Philippe Melka felt the vineyard spoke with two voices – one aristocratic and intense, the other softer, more plush and mellow.  Prop Red is the second of those voices, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.  After dropping half her crop in 2010, Shirley was rewarded with this ripe and welcoming red that’s already delicious and sure to improve for years.  A bit of a cross between the black-fruited 2008 and the finer, more detailed, 2009.

“Roy’s 2010 Proprietary Red has a little more delineation and nuance than the 2009. Freshly cut flowers, violets, super ripe dark fruit, mocha, espresso, chocolate, plums, cassis and black currants all jump from the glass in this opulent full-bodied huge wine. Layers of fruit continue to build to the creamy, expressive finish.  Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”  Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blueberry, coffee, mocha, truffle and chocolate show a slightly porty quality. Fat, smooth and lush in the mouth, offering immediate accessibility. The truffley element carries through on the palate. This nicely rich, layered blend finishes with dusty tannins and good length.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

Araujo Altagracia Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #29894 (In Stock)
Araujo Altagracia Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Araujo Altagracia Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

“Bright red-ruby. Deep aromas of dark berries, violet and caraway seed lifted by an impression of peppery acidity. Fresh and penetrating, showing good energy to the slightly medicinal flavors of kirsch, crushed berries and violet. Juicy but not green, finishing with dusty tannins and good length. This is very successful for a second wine from a tricky year.”  Steve Tanzer 91 points

“The 2011 Altagracia is round, sexy, supple and beautiful, especially within the context of the year. Sweet red berries, mint, tobacco, savory herbs and anise meld together in a distinctive wine long on personality. With time in the glass the wine fleshes out nicely, as the flavors become darker, richer and layered. Altagracia is a blend of mostly Eisele fruit, plus a bit of Vine Hill Ranch, a well-draining site in Oakville that is among Napa Valley's very best. The blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec.”  Antonio Galloni 92 points

Beaulieu Vineyards George De Latour Private Rsv 2012 Product #29923 (In Stock)
Beaulieu Vineyards George De Latour Private Rsv 2012 Beaulieu Vineyards George De Latour Private Rsv 2012

When André Tchelistcheff arrived at BV in 1938, he tasted a small lot of the 1936 vintage that the Latour family was holding back for their own pleasure – a wine they called Private Reserve.  He insisted that it be released and later named it for the winery founder, Georges de Latour, and it soon became America’s most important Cabernet Sauvignon.  Today, made in a special winery created just for this wine and drawn from the heart of the BV #1 and #2 vineyards, Private Reserve is making its claim for greatness once again. You’ll find showier high-end Napa Cabs these days, but few that so perfectly combine the rich, ripe, fruit and dense concentration of Napa’s 2012 harvest with clarity of flavors and pure, sweet, tannins on the long finish. A stunner.

"The deep ruby/purple-colored 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is BV’s flagship wine. It boasts sweet notes of charcoal, burning embers, vanillin, tar and copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In keeping with this generously endowed vintage, the wine is supple, full-bodied, multidimensional and opulent. It will drink beautifully young and last for 20-25 years."Wine Advocate 94 points

Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Product #27382 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Philippe Melka makes this wine from selected barrels of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (95%) and a little Petit Verdot (5%).  For this wine, he chooses barrels that emphasize Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure and minerality vs. the lusher, more plush, Proprietary red.  The wine ages 18 months (vs. 14 for the Prop Red) in 100% new French oak. “Aristocratic” was my first note on tasting this in March, 2012, and words like “pure”, “elegant”, “powerful”, and, most of all, “long!” all cropped up as well.  Where the 2008 Proprietary Red is luscious, this is more reserved and complex with finer structure and much deeper minerality and snap.  Just lovely stuff.

“Close in quality but perhaps not quite as exuberant and profound is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot). It boasts an opaque purple color as well as abundant notes of charcoal, scorched earth, underbrush, licorice, black currants and blackberries. Slightly more evolved than the 2007, it is nearly that wine’s equal in terms of depth, richness and overall appeal. This strong effort should drink well for two decades or more.”Wine Advocate 93 points

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2012 Product #29551 (In Stock)
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2012

Chuck Wagner crafts his Special Selection Cabernet by selecting the very best barrels in the Caymus cellars and allowing the wine a bit of extra time to mature in oak and bottle before release.  It’s always a big, rich, wine that pumps out oodles of dark currant, chocolate covered plum, mocha, sweet spice, and rich blackberry aromas and flavors.  On release, the wine can be almost overwhelming in its rich, creamy, density and will show the firm (but very ripe) tannins needed to support long-term aging.

After trying the “regular” 2012 Caymus Cabernet, we know many of you are wondering, “Just how good can Chuck Wagner’s very best 2012 Cab be?”  Well, we’ll note that a) Caymus Special Selection is Chuck Wagner’s choice of the best barrels he made each vintage; b) it’s the only wine ever to be named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year twice; c) Robert Parker hung a 96 point rating on the 2012 Napa Cabernet; and d) Special Selection always ends up 2-4 points more highly rated than the Napa Cab.  You do the math!  A “do not miss it” opportunity for every fan of the lush, powerful, 2012 Napa Cabs!

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Cask 23 2012 Product #29771 (In Stock)
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Cask 23 2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Cask 23 2012

A Napa legend returns to form. Very limited and highly impressive.

"The spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 appears to be the finest Cask 23 since the glory years of the mid-eighties. It boasts a dense purple color, complex notes of spice box, Christmas fruitcake, blackcurrant jam, mulberries and spring flowers, as well as a full-bodied, opulent personality. It is a profound example of this iconic wine that went through a period of mediocrity in the mid- to late-1990s prior to being sold. Drink now-2038."Wine Advocate 97-100 points

Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2011 MAGNUM Product #28809 (In Stock)
Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2011 MAGNUM Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2011 MAGNUM

A sneaky delicious, very food-friendly, Napa Valley classic now and for the next 10+ years.

"A solid Spottswoode with mint, currants, berries and flowers. Sweet tobacco and rose petals. Full body with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Tangy, energetic and lively. A wine with form, tension and beauty. This is classic California. 89% cabernet sauvignon, 8% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Better in 2016."  James Suckling 95 points

"Spottswoode's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is beautiful, immediate and impeccable in its balance. Spottswoode fans should drink the 2011 relatively early, while some of the more powerful, structured vintages age. I will not be surprised if the 2011 turns out to be one of the jewels of this vintage. The medium-bodied structure argues for early drinking, but there is more than enough energy and acidity to suggest the 2011 will age gracefully for a number of years. Incidentally, the 2011 is the first Spottswoode Cabernet under 14% in a decade."  Antonio Galloni 94 points
