Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2012 Product #29503 (In Stock)
Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2012 Ch Montelena Cabernet Napa 2012

Another fine vintage for this stylish Napa classic.

"Bright red-ruby. At once riper and more medicinal on the nose than the 2011, offering aromas of plum syrup, blueberry and spices. Firm and nicely refined, with an attractive juicy quality to the black fruit and spice flavors. Finishes with rather suave tannins. This cuvee seems to be better than ever, as Bo Barrett has done a good job of leavening the concentrated, black mountain fruit with the softer tannins of cabernet from the valley floor."  Vinous (Steve Tanzer) 89-90 points

Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28760 (In Stock)
Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

Another fine release of Paul Hobb's CrossBarn Cab is here! Fruit from several different Napa vineyards gets a nice French oak treatment here, delivering lush aromas and flavors of black currant, black cherry, mocha, fresh herb and spice.  Plenty of tannin hiding down under the lush fruit to pair with robust foods, but it's soft and mouthfilling enough to just drink.

Martin Ray Cabernet Diamond Mountain 2012 Product #29650 (In Stock)
Martin Ray Cabernet Diamond Mountain 2012 Martin Ray Cabernet Diamond Mountain 2012

Diamond Mountain's high-elevation vineyards get more sun than the valley floor but cool fast at night, giving powerful wines that retain freshness and focus.  Luxurious and rich, polished and stylish, with fine, steak-worthy, tannins.

"Velvety chocolate and dark plum flavors give this wine a smooth, satisfying mouthfeel, assisted by well-integrated oak. Dark and brooding, it reflects its hillside provenance without succumbing entirely to an overripe or overdone style."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Mount Eden Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2010 Product #28781 (In Stock)
Mount Eden Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2010 Mount Eden Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2010

"Often the most overlooked wine in the Mount Eden range, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon shows the pedigree of this great vintage. Firm veins of tannin support a core of black fruit, tar, grilled herbs, smoke and incense in a wild, savory mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that dazzles with its exceptional overall balance and personality. This is another fabulous new release from Mount Eden."  Antonio Galloni 94+ points

"Most of the fruit for this restrained, savory cabernet comes from cuttings Emmett Rixford purportedly sourced from Château Margaux in the 1890s. Martin Ray propagated his own cuttings from that selection to plant in this vineyard’s shallow, shale-laced soils at 1,800 feet of elevation in the 1940s and 50s, and later Jeffrey Patterson replanted it in the 1980s with a selection from those vines. Is it just a coincidence that, tasting this blind, my thoughts turned to a 1985 Margaux I tasted recently? Maybe it was the gentle elasticity of the texture, the vibrant acidity, the rosy glow streaming through a curtain of ripe, earthy tannins. This feels layered with complexity: Beyond the pure cassis tone you might find lavender, graphite, redwood bark, black olive and green herbs. But you don’t need to go fishing for descriptors to appreciate its nuances: just think of it as lovely, integrated, old-school California cabernet. Buy a case and try not to drink most of it until 2030. (1,505 cases)"Wine & Spirits 96 points

Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Howell Mountain 2010 Product #29591 (In Stock)
Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Howell Mountain 2010 Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Howell Mountain 2010

All the power and intensity you expect from Howell Mountain but without heaviness are hard edges - the rare Howell Mountain Cab that's delicious young!  From vineyards at 1,600-1,800 feet elevation, comfortably above the fog line, this 100% Cabernet delivers generous aromas for ripe blackberry, black cherry, currant, cocoa and mint.  It's rich and velvety in the mouth, with plush black fruit and spice flavors supported by surprisingly fine-grained, supple, tannins. You can certainly cellar this for 10 years, but it's delicious now with grilled beef or lamb.

Taplin Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Terra 9 2009 Product #29016 (In Stock)
Taplin Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Terra 9 2009 Taplin Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Terra 9 2009

Taplin family members have grown wine grapes in Napa Valley for five generations, and now siblings Melinda, Bill, and Stephen (who lives here in the DC area) are making their own wine.  The Terra 9 wine is named for ancestor John Lewelling's comments about the St. Helena soil:  9 parts rock to 1 part dirt!  Of course, that's just about perfect for ripening pure, intense, Cabernet Sauvignon like you'll find in the bottle here.  Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, crushed herb and spice lead to a focused palate of dark berries and plums dusted with cocoa, spice and herb.  The finish is firm enough to handle a ribeye, but supple enough to enjoy with lighter foods or even on its own.  An excellent value in handmade Napa Cabernet that's ready to drink now.

Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 Product #29711 (In Stock)
Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012

The first time I tasted Zeitgeist Cabernet (the 2011 we offered last year), I noticed clear lines of connection to Aurajo’s Altegracia Cabernet from Calistoga and Spottswoode’s Cabernet from St. Helena.  And, since co-winemaker Jennifer Williams worked harvest at Aurajo and was head winemaker at Spottswoode from 2006-2011, I suppose that’s not surprising.  What is surprising is that you can cellar and drink a bottle of Napa Cabernet with this much lush fruit and suave, sophisticated, texture for under $75 compared to the $100-$200 those other wines command!

From first pour, you’ll find generous Napa Cab aromas of black currant, blackberry, black raspberry chocolate, and sweet spice.  The flavors follow, coating your palate with dark, chocolaty, fruit and layers of spice, mocha, and black licorice and more.  Dense, deep, and wonderfully supple, the wine retains a precise focus across the midpalate and on through the juicy, long, finish where black fruit, chocolate, cedar, and a hint of pepper and herb linger on and on over round, ripe, tannins.  You can certainly enjoy this right now with a nice steak (or even on its own!), but it would be a shame not to put a few bottles down to enjoy the complexity that will emerge over the next decade-plus. Just 400 cases made.

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2013 Product #29777 (In Stock)
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2013 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2013

The 41st edition of this benchmark Napa Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards in 8 of Napa’s 16 sub-appellations, with about 75% of the fruit coming from the Valley floor and 25% from hillside sites.  It’s ripe, and rich, and bursting with blackcurrant, dark cherry, spice, and milk chocolate aromas and flavors with a nice lift of crushed violets on the nose and palate.  Although it’s technically bigger than the 2012 – about 0.5% more alcohol here – the texture feels more elegant and pure, with the ripe fruit a bit more fresh and acids just a touch more crisp.  The finish is long and generous with fruit, chocolate, spice, licorice and violet notes lingering nicely over sweet, smooth as silk, tannins.

Robert Parker rated the 2012 Caymus Cabernet – the winery’s 40th vintage – at 96 points for its powerhouse structure and exuberant, even flamboyant, personality and balance of lavish oak and massive fruit.  The 2013 is just as silky smooth as the 2012 and pumps out just as much flavor, but has more detailed flavors and a longer finish.  Personally, I like the 2013 more than the 2012 and I’m sure many critics will agree with me.  I suspect others – probably including Parker – will give the nod to 2012.  No wrong answers here, just personal preference.  If you like Caymus, you’ll love the 2013!
