"The outstanding 2011 Novellum competes with some of the finest Macon-Villages wines one can find. It is made from 100% Chardonnay (from 25- to 30-year-old vines), aged three months in a combination of Burgundy barrels (30%) and stainless steel tanks (70%), and, somewhat innovatively, is aged on Viognier lees which gives it a honeysuckle and white peach-scented nose. There is also a salty sea breeze character reminiscent of the crushed oyster shell-like note my colleague David Schildknect often detects in Loire Valley whites. This crisp, fresh, medium-bodied Cotes Catalanes exhibits lots of earthy/terroir characteristics. Made from fruit grown and purchased from around the North Coast, this gets a touch of oak and about 30% goes through malolactic fermentation for a touch of buttery creaminess. The aromas and flavors feature plenty of ripe apple, pear, pineapple and citrus fruit with a nice dose of spice. The texture is creamy and rich, but the bright acids keep things fresh and pure. An old (for NZ - founded 1978) but still family-run winery in Nelson has turned out a lovely bottle of Chardonnay with Burgundy structure and ripe, New World, fruit. Aromas of roasted nuts, smoky mineral, and orchard fruits lead to a bright mouthful of green apple, golden pineapple, and toasted almond flavors. As they explain, "One of the coolest summers on record resulted in long hang time and grapes with high natural acidity. There's actually a lot of Chardonnay grown in Italy, but it tends to suffer from one of two faults: too expensive or not very good. This is the exception! Barolo's DeForville family planted a small vineyard in Barbaresco to Chardonnay in the mid-1980s and the results are very, very, impressive. This bright, crisp, Chardonnay is vinified and raised in stainless steel to preserve freshness and energy. It's creamy in the mouth with juicy pineapple, green apple, fresh butter, and a touch of chalk but finishes with a lovely squirt of lemony acidity. Great with seafood or just to start off a meal.

You don't often see wines from Vire-Clesse in the USA, but this one is worth searching out. The AOC was created in 1999 for some of the highest-altitude vineyards in Macon. It's 100% Chardonnay that delivers surprising depth in the friendly 2011 vintage. Lovely aromas of golden apple and creamy, chalk, grilled nuts and chervil lead to a surprisingly rich palate with a zip of fine acidity. Golden-toned flavors of creamed corn, grilled pineapple, lavender and butter and a touch of caramelized sugar. Just a terrific effort.

As always, this is a fresh bottle of Chardonnay with crisp apple, green melon and Bosc pear fruit with a touch of baking spice. Juicy and showing less wood than in the past, it finishes with a touch of flint and lots of clean, juicy, fruit.
"There are notable changes in the approach of the 2011 Catena Chardonnay compared to previous vintages: 40% malolactic instead of 100%, a move to Mercurey barrels instead of Francois Freres, a reduction from 50% new oak to 20%. This vintage was also harvested 20 days earlier. It is a blend of three vineyards that are divided into lots at harvest. It is whole cluster pressed and aged for ten months in French oak. It demonstrates great clarity on the nose with scents of dried honey, linden, crushed stone and dried white flowers. The palate is well-balanced with crisp acidity and is a taut, focused Chardonnay with lively notes of tangerine and quince towards the finish. This is well-crafted and complex for its price point. While Qupe is best known for their Rhone varietals (red and white), they turn out a pretty fine Chardonnay from the “Y Block” of the famous Bien Nacido vineyard. The ripe fruit is barrel fermented (25% new), but it’s the acidity and freshness that really grabs you. Plenty of crisp apple and asian pear fruit framed by juicy citrus acid and a touch of leesy creaminess. A crowd-pleaser and very strong value.
