Val De Salis Chardonnay 2012 Product #27992 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Chardonnay 2012 Val De Salis Chardonnay 2012

The Gau family has owned these tidy vineyards not far from the medieval city of Carcassonne in the heart of the Languedoc for 100 years.  But, grapes have grown here far longer and the vineyards were thriving when the phylloxera louse made its appearance in France in the 1870s.  As vineyards all around began to wither and die, the owners here took advantage of an unusual access to water and began flooding their vineyards every spring for 50 days – just long enough to drown phylloxera larva.  The Gau family continues this tradition, making this one of the very few European vineyards where wine grapes grow on their own roots, rather than being grafted on to American grape rootstocks.

The Gau family is unusual for Languedoc growers in another way – they make only “single varietal” wines rather than the field blends of Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Syrah common all around them.  This purportedly 100% Chardonnay thrives in the rocky soils and warm climate here, and delivers lovely aromas of ripe pear and apple with pretty floral accents.  The flavors start crisp and refreshing and get even better with a little air, with sweet Bosc pear, peach and apricot flavors gaining complexity from the barest hint of caramel and mineral.  No oak here to interfere with the fruit, and we suspect a little Viognier has snuck into the Chardonnay vines, giving this much more perfume and peach than normally found this far south.  A luscious mouthful of wine with a crisp, clean, finish that will delight at a party and make you think of springtime when sipped on its own.

Lismore Range Chardonnay 2013 Product #28208 (In Stock)
Lismore Range Chardonnay 2013 Lismore Range Chardonnay 2013

AVERY QUINN CHARDONNAY FANS! Believe it or not, we've found a dead ringer for the very popular Avery Quin Chardonnay, with only two main differences:  1) it's from Australia; and, 2) it's an even better deal!  A California-based "negotiant" took advantage of the ripe 2013 harvest in Australia to purchase beautifully ripe Chardonnay and have it aged 5 months in French oak barrels.  Then - to keep costs down - it's shipped to the USA in an airtight bladder and bottled in California.

Leaving that all aside, it's flat out delicious.  Juicy apple and pear fruit take center stage with accents of spice, salty caramel, and just a touch of butter.  Rich and creamy, but with air it gets a bit more juicy with crisp apple livening the finish, but the pear, caramel, toasted nut, and hint of butter keep pumping through from first sip to last. A stunning value in a great everyday Chardonnay for parties, sipping, or most any food.

Kenwood Chardonnay Yulupa 2012 Kenwood Chardonnay Yulupa 2012

A very tasty California Chardonnay here at a very nice price.  Kenwood launched this wine for restaurant by the glass programs, but it's turned out to be a winner at home as well!  Aromas and flavors feature ripe stone fruits and grilled pineapple framed by notes of rich caramel and tangy citrus.  Full, but not heavy, full of fruit, but not fruity, this is the kind of party Chardonnay California should turn out by the tankfull, but seldom does.  Rock solid value.

Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Product #27452 (In Stock)
Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  Rain, hail, and wind cut the Chardonnay harvest by about 40% in 2012, giving the Couillauds unusually concentrated, powerful, fruit.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with super energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  This will be fantastic with rich seafood dishes and fresh cheeses.

Josephine Dubois Bourgogne Blanc 2011 Josephine Dubois Bourgogne Blanc 2011

At their best, 2011 white Burgundies hint at 2008's vibrant minerality but deliver softer, more easy to enjoy now, pleasure.  That's the case here.  A fine, honest, bottle of Chardonnay with notes of green apple, chalk, limes kin and toasted nuts.  Clean and fresh from start to finish - a little Chablis-like, actually - with good length and a touch of saline mineral on the mouthwatering finish.  Very classy Bourgogne, especially at this price!

Here's a versatile and delicious California Chardonnay built to satisfy a crowd - and you!  Ripe, creamy, and fresh, the aromas and flavors feature juicy apple, pineapple, peach, citrus, and salty caramel. Mostly made in stainless steel for brightness and fruit, the 15% aged in oak delivers just a hint of smoke to complement the buttery notes on the back.  Lots of lees stirring gives it a creamy, round, mouthfeel and the juicy apple and sweet butter caramel flavors linger nicely on the fresh finish. A fine party or everyday Chardonnay and outstanding value.

Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011 Product #27692 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011 Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011

This is the kind of wine that challenges preconceptions, especially if you think "foothills of the Dolomites" means "cool climate wines."  In fact, there's plenty of warmth in the region around Bolzano, which makes it possible to grow some pretty captivating Chardonnay - if you're careful.  The growers of Kelleri Kaltern plant the fruit for this wine on chalky gravel (Chardonnay loves chalk!) in windy crevices of the mountains.  The breeze keeps the fruit healthy and lets the fruit hang until late in the season, developing plenty of sugar and complex, ripe, flavors.  Whole cluster pressing, fermentation in steel, and aging about 30% in large casks preserves freshness and adds complexity.

The result is a ripe-smelling Chardonnay with generous tropical fruit framed with notes of vanilla, butter, and smoke.  Full and creamy on the palate where the fruit and hazelnut flavors coat your mouth, there's plenty of bright acidity to keep things fresh.  Tastes much more expensive than even the reasonable regular price!

Dom Vincent Dampt Chablis 2011 375ml Dom Vincent Dampt Chablis 2011 375ml

This is stony, pure, Chablis with plenty of crisp fruit and slatey mineral and just a touch of roundness from limited use of neutral oak.  Creamy without any sign of heaviness and very nice length for a Village wine.

"A solidly complex and reasonably refined nose features notes of dried flowers, lemon zest, mineral reduction and a hint of iodine. There is good energy to the racy and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess a seductive texture before terminating in a persistent, clean and moderately dry finish. This harmonious effort should mature quickly. Outstanding Top Value."Allen Meadows 89 points

Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2010 Product #26899 (In Stock)
Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2010 Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2010

When you're the son and assistant winemaker for Napa legend Ric Forman, you really ought to know a thing or two about making great Chardonnay.  And, when you're married to another third-generation grape grower, you really ought to be able to bring in excellent fruit, too.  So, the only thing really surprising about the outstanding Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay 2010 from Toby and Dawn Forman is the price - sure tastes like $40 Chardonnay, but carries a very attractive sub-$20 price tag!

Made from fruit grown and purchased from around the North Coast, this gets a touch of oak and about 30% goes through malolactic fermentation for a touch of buttery creaminess. The aromas and flavors feature plenty of ripe apple, pear, pineapple and citrus fruit with a nice dose of spice.  The texture is creamy and rich, but the bright acids keep things fresh and pure. A terrific wine, especially at this price!

Dom Raphael Sallet Macon-Uchizy 2012 Product #27923 (In Stock)

Here’s a lovely white Burgundy for drinking now at a very, very, nice price.  You’ve probably never heard of the little village of Macon-Uchizy, but it’s well known in Burgundy itself.  With its east-facing vineyards, Uchizy gives wines of fine ripeness but a touch more perfume and delicacy than is often found in the Macon.  And, Raphael Sallet is just the man to capture the region’s potential in a bottle.  Sallet is relatively unknown in this country, and you won’t find much about him in the wine press either.  That’s because he’s widely respected for quality and value within France and has never had to bother to cultivate a reputation in the US.

Taste the wine, though, and you’ll know just how good Raphael is!  Aromas of ripe apple, white peach, apple skin, green pineapple and a touch of hazelnut and crushed chervil with just a touch of salty caramel hiding underneath.  Then bright and creamy textured in the mouth with clean apple, white peach, and lemony citrus fruit accented by notes of cultured butter and dried caramel.  A note of chalky mineral shows up on the back and continues on the pretty, clean and tasty, lemon/lime and peach skin finish.

Il Falchetto Langhe Chardonnay 2012 Product #27767 (In Stock)
Il Falchetto Langhe Chardonnay 2012 Il Falchetto Langhe Chardonnay 2012

A wine to enjoy at family celebrations – including Thanksgiving – from a family making wine in Italy’s Piemonte region since the mid-1600s.  Today, the latest generation of the Forno family – brothers Giorgio, Fabrizio and Adriano – craft award-winning Brachetto, Barbera, and Dolcetto from their vineyards along the border of the Langhe and Monferato.  And, thanks to Maurizio Farro, now we know they make a great Chardonnay value, too!

The Forno family’s Chardonnay comes from vineyards in Santo Stefano Belbo, about 20 minutes east of Barbaresco.  The sandy clay soils, bright Piemonte sunshine, and long growing season are perfect for getting Chardonnay ripe without losing bright, juicy, acidity. Fermentation and aging entirely in tank (no oak barrels) captures the essence of Chardonnay fruit and lets the grape’s character sing through.

The show opens with generous aromas of fresh fruit – apple, pear, pineapple, and lemon notes – with a captivating accent of fresh crushed mint.  The flavors follow the aromas with plenty of ripe apple, pear, and sweet lemon fruit plus a salty butterscotch element that takes the wine in a more rich, deeply flavored, direction than you’d expect.  The texture here is fantastic, rich enough to fill up your mouth but with no hard edges and a slippery, glycerol, character that makes this go down very, very, easily. A squirt of lemon and green apple acid at the end makes your mouth water as the fresh fruit and salty caramel flavors linger on.  The kind of wine that quenches your thirst and pairs beautifully with salty nuts or savory hors d'oeuvres.  But there’s more than enough complexity and heft here to make this a great dinner table white, too, even for a meal as big and bold as Thanksgiving!

Very clean and lively, with classic Chardonnay notes of juiced apple, citrus and minerality, it is clean and focused on the palate with the richness of the variety, yet also beautiful precision and focus. Classy and well-made, without any apparent oak, it should be purchased by the case and consumed over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016."Wine Advocate 91 points
