Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29496 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

The 2011 edition was one of our best-selling red value favorites of both 2013 and 2014, and the new vintage cranks up the intensity and depth even more.  The aromas are robust and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry fruit, hints of dark chocolate and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.  Supple enough for a party, structured enough for most anything you’ll pull off the grill, and a steal of a deal, too!

"A very honest, fresh and fruit-driven red with aromas of cherries, garrigue and thyme with a medium-bodied palate, some weight and tannins that would do better with food. This is a red that sells for a song."Wine Advocate 88 points

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Product #31194 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2015 edition is even better, clearly the best release of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date.  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

The wine opens with big, bold aromas of black cherry, dark berries, underbrush, loamy earth and cracked black pepper. Take a sip and you'll love the explosion of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit and accents of pepper, rich earth, and sweet spice - all from the grape, because there's no oak here at all.  The finish is broad, fresh and very long, with fine, dusty, tannins providing food-friendly support and dark berry and pepper flavors lingering nicely.  A delicious wine that sell for a crazy low price.

Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013 Product #30784 (In Stock)
Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013 Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013

The 2013 Figaro is a great introduction to the old vines of Spain's Calatayud and just an all-around great “House Red” to enjoy this year.  The low-yielding old Garnacha vines give this wonderful ripeness and concentration, with big aromas and flavors of baked strawberry, dark black cherry, dried flowers, and cracked pepper.  The cool nights and fermentation in steel tank lock in the fruit and keep it fresh and vibrant, while a short stay in oak barrels rounds off the edges and adds a lovely burst of sweet spice on the juicy, lightly chewy, finish.

Drink it cool and you’ll love the almost sangria-like fruitiness.  Let it come up to room temperatures, and watch this fill your mouth with generous fruit and spice and pair perfectly with most any meat, fish, or vegetable coming off the grill.  A great all-purpose red to enjoy anytime!

Vinicola Corellana Camara Alta Navarra Garnacha 2015 Product #31418 (In Stock)
Vinicola Corellana Camara Alta Navarra Garnacha 2015 Vinicola Corellana Camara Alta Navarra Garnacha 2015

As more than one expert has said, seeing the Thomas Calder Selection note on a wine's back label is a close to a guarantee of quality as you're going to get.  Here, Tom heads south from his normal French turf to uncover a gem of a winery from Spain's Navarra region.  North of Rioja and note far from the French border, Navarra was Spain's most important wine region in the 1700-1800s, so much so that the King had to ban new vineyard plantings for fear not enough food would be grown to feed the local population!

The sandy soils of Ribera Baja, in Navarra's south, are perfect for getting traditional grapes like Garnacha fully ripe without going over the top, and that's what we have here.  Done all in tank, Garnacha grapes from 50+ year-old vines delivers direct strawberry and cherry fruit with dashes of herb and spice for extra interest.  Easy drinking, fresh, and fun, this over-delivers for the price and will be a great everyday red for casual food and entertaining.

Sweet, concentrated and seamless, offering intense raspberry and cherry compote flavors and a touch of vanilla. Clings with impressive authority on the finish, which features supple tannins and lingering floral character. This wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, then went through malolactic fermentation and 21 months of aging in used French oak barriques. Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache Barossa 2014 Product #30771 (In Stock)
Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache Barossa 2014 Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache Barossa 2014

From 50-100 year-old vines, this is always one of Australia's very best Grenache values.

"High-pitched aromas of fresh red berries, candied rose, blood orange and white pepper; smells a lot like an elegant Pinot Noir to me. Clean, racy and vibrant on the palate, with the redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors conveying a weightless quality. Spicy, brisk and gently tannic on the clinging finish. This distinctly graceful wine is extremely easy to drink now but it should age nicely on its balance. These vines were reportedly planted between 1898 and 1973."  Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

"Pale garnet colored with a hint of purple, the 2014 Grenache Old Bush Vine offers enticing red cherry and raspberry preserves notes accented with suggestions of cinnamon stick, orange peel, red roses and white pepper. Medium-bodied and beautifully delicate in the mouth, it sure doesn't scrimp on the flavor, filling the palate with warm red berries and baking spice cushioned with soft tannins and finishing with great length."Wine Advocate 90+ points
