Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013 Product #29266 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013 Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013

Malbec surged to international fame on the strength of the darkly fruited, ripe, and lush examples grown in Argentina’s Mendoza vineyards.  But, before that, it was the basis of one of the most famous wines of late medieval Europe, the intense, earthy, bitingly tannic “black wines” of Cahors in the Southwest of France. The 2012 Val De Salis Malbec from vineyards near the French walled city of  Carcassonne sort of splits the difference in these two styles to deliver a big mouthful of juicy, complex, fruity fun.

You’ll find plenty of New World fruit here, with generous dollops of red plum, raspberry and tangy pie cherry in the aromas and on the palate.  And, you’ll also notice the Old World notes of fresh leather, licorice root, and the notes of lavender, thyme, and black olive the French call garrigue.  On the finish, the New/Old World influence merge to deliver lingering red fruit, licorice, and lavender flavors, bright acidity, and just the right dose of dusty tannin.  What you won’t find is any oak to get in the way of the pure, clean, and refreshing flavors.  Structured enough to sing with burgers, pizza, grilled chicken or most any everyday food, but soft and generous enough to just sip at a party.  And, a steal at this price!

Gouguenheim Malbec 2013 Gouguenheim Malbec 2013

A ripe, meaty, Malbec that will work at table or on it's own.  100% Malbec pleasure with almost no wood influence. Pretty aromas of black berries, spice, lavender and red licorice lead to smooth, rich, flavors of blackberry and blueberry and a lash of coffee and smoky spice.  An easy drinker that has more meaty heft going on than you'd expect for the price.  Bet this would sing with steak rubbed with coffee and ancho chile!

Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2012 Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2012

A lot more serious fun than most Malbec in this price range, it's soft enough to sip and deep enough to love rich food.  This vintage is a bit darker and jammier than the last, but it still finishes clean thanks to the firm structure.  No oak, but plenty of spice and fine-grained tannin.

Zorzal Terroir Unico Malbec Tupungato 2013 Product #29129 (In Stock)
Zorzal Terroir Unico Malbec Tupungato 2013 Zorzal Terroir Unico Malbec Tupungato 2013

The big Wine Advocate rating may understate the quality of this remarkable, fresh, Malbec.  No oak, but loads of flavor - fruit, mineral, spice - and a wonderfully creamy texture.  A great choice for after work sipping and to enjoy with a huge range of foods – everything from burgers to Indian food can work here!

"Zorzal is a young winery, created in 2008 with the objective of showing the terroir of Gualtallary, Tupungato in the Uco Valley, where the vineyards are located at 1,350 meters altitude and the soils are alluvial with granite and calcium carbonate. The 2013 Terroir Unico Malbec is unoaked and sourced from a special vineyard close to the winery, planted in poor soil. The code name they use internally to identify the wine is “chalk.” It does have a strong sense of minerality and the pure character of the Malbec, with fresh floral notes (violets), pungent aromatic herbs (lavender), and a spicy twist. The palate is very fluid, with tension. This is pure Malbec juice such that I had not experienced before. Unbelivable quality for the price! Drink 2014-2018."Wine Advocate 92 points

Sur De Los Andes Malbec Cabernet Premium 2010 Product #29210 (In Stock)
Sur De Los Andes Malbec Cabernet Premium 2010 Sur De Los Andes Malbec Cabernet Premium 2010

This was supposed to be a $24 “Premium” red, and we certainly found enough in the bottle and the enthusiastic critical reviews to support that price. Like most of our Mendoza favorites, it’s a blend of Malbec (for lush, opulent, fruit) and Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and class).  Sustainable farming - no herbicides or fertilizers, natural spring water irrigation - hand harvesting, double sorting on vibrating tables, and up to a year in French oak (20% new), and a little extra time in bottle before release all sound like a recipe for great wine and big prices.

No idea why the price dropped to this level, but it’s a flat-out steal.  It’s a  blockbuster steakhouse Malbec/Cabernet blend that’s loaded with black fruit, licorice, and spice over firm, dusty, tannins.  Anyone who wants a serious steak wine for a not very serious price would do way to snap up some of this before everyone else catches on and the price pops back up to where it’s supposed to be.

“Intense mineral and berry aromas show class and touches of mint and resiny wood. This feels crisp, electric and drawing, while flavors of graphite, mint, raw oak, vanilla, plum and raspberry run onto a lightly herbal, medium-length finish. Drink this tightly wound, fresh young blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot now through 2020.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Clos Siguier Cahors 2011 Product #29262 (In Stock)
Clos Siguier Cahors 2011 Clos Siguier Cahors 2011

Lots of classic Cahors' character here with just enough modern winemaking to make it accessible now.  A blend of 90% Malbec and 10% Tannat from 60 year-old vines that's fermented in tank and allowed to rest and soften in old casks.  Dark, tangy, and honest with sour cherry fruit, crushed herb, and loads of minerality.  Not Mendoza fruity, but not the impenetrable "black wine" that made Cahors famous in the 1300s. Firm on the finish and perfect for stew or roasts.

Bodegas Monteviejo Lindaflor Petite Fleur 2010 Product #28201 (In Stock)
Bodegas Monteviejo Lindaflor Petite Fleur 2010 Bodegas Monteviejo Lindaflor Petite Fleur 2010

A serious, dark, Malbec blend with notes of chocolate and superb concentration.  Needs air and big meant now.  This is great value.

"The 2010 Petite Fleur is a blend of 50% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah and 10% Merlot cropped at nine tons per acre. It has a ripe bouquet of creme de cassis, marmalade and blood orange that could be overbearing, but it is undeniably nicely controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It has superb weight of fruit, while the finish is powerful yet elegant, with Asian spices, dark cherry and dried orange peel lingering on the aftertaste. Drink 2013-2018."Wine Advocate 90 points

Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2012 Product #28301 (In Stock)
Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2012 Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2012

A big Malbec that stays poised and focused, with half the wine raised in tank for freshness.

"The opaque purple-colored 2012 Malbec is a big (14.5% natural alcohol), 1,800-case cuvee that spent time in both neutral tanks (50%) and oak (50%). It reveals some spicy oak notes along with a big, sweet kiss of blackberry and black raspberry fruit as well as hints of camphor and white flowers. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium to full-bodied, lush, opulent Malbec to enjoy over the next 4-5 years, perhaps longer."Wine Advocate 91 points

Catena Malbec Alta 2011 Product #29274 (In Stock)
Catena Malbec Alta 2011 Catena Malbec Alta 2011

Another great vintage for this benchmark Malbec, now called "Historic Rows" in recognition of the old vine plantings within Catena's high-elevation Mendoza vineyards.

"This shows a silky and beautiful wine with plum, spice, salt and sliced meat. Full body, with wonderful fruit and spicy, meat and berry character. A little jammy but I like it a lot. Drink or hold."  James Suckling 93 points

"Meaty, minty scents accent core cassis, jammy blackberry and oaky aromas. In the mouth, this benchmark Argentinean Malbec is tight and structured, with no flab or excess weight. An exotic mix of blueberry, cassis and Middle East spices finish long, with oak-driven lemony snap. Drink through 2020."Wine Enthusiast 91 points
