Colosi Nero D' Avola Sicilia 2012 Product #27954 (In Stock)
Colosi Nero D' Avola Sicilia 2012 Colosi Nero D' Avola Sicilia 2012

As Wine Advocate says, "it is hard to argue with the quality Colosi puts into the bottle at these prices." This is a fresh, bright, style of Sicily's Nero d'Avola that will make a super sipper or party wine (and will shine with richer meats and pasta, too!).  Bright aromas of red plum, blackberry, and fresh, savory, herb.  Hearty and ripe, but still juicy and fresh, in the mouth with loads of sweet blackberry and boysenberry fruit and a touch of earthy tar.  Mouthfilling deliciousness here that will explode with Lebanese or Moroccan food.

Firriato Chiaramonte Nero D'avola 2011 Product #27902 (In Stock)

This juicy, black-fruited, slightly modern take on Sicily’s Nero d’Avola grape was one of our top selling Italian reds for four or five years, but it disappeared from the local market in late 2009.  Now budding importer Maurizio Farro has brought it back and we’ve been reminded just how much it was missed!

The grape is Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s best-known red varietal and one that’s prone to making rustic, pruny, wines that lack a little freshness.  Not here!  Winemaker Giuseppe Pellegrino picks his fruit ripe but not over-ripe, gives it a cool fermentation and then ages a portion of the young wine for 6 months in mostly used barrels.  The result is a lithe and fresh Nero d’Avola, full of dark black cherry and black plum fruit, hints of licorice root and spice, and a zingy squirt of citrusy acidity.  It’s a fun wine to just sip on (takes a chill nicely), but really sings with backyard cookout food or pasta with roasted tomatoes.  Very fine value.

Firriato Nero D'avola Harmonium 2009 Product #26286 (In Stock)
Firriato Nero D'avola Harmonium 2009 Firriato Nero D'avola Harmonium 2009

Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s most important red grape, but it has a tendency to either go over-ripe and prune-like or under-ripe and harsh.  Firriato has a way with Nero d’Avola as we’ve seen in their “regular” Chiramonte wine, but here they really open up and let Nero strut its stuff.  This is fully ripe (but not over the top) Nero that gets time in small barrel.  The past two vintages scored 90 points in Wine Spectator, and the review of the 2008 sure applies here:  “Ripe and amped up, this boasts layered flavors of baking spice, toasty oak and grilled rosemary, which lead to a jammy core of plum skin and kirsch fruit. Medium tannins and tarry minerals accent the long, dark finish.”  Big steak wine.
