Riebeek Cellars Rose 2012 Product #27010 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Rose 2012 Riebeek Cellars Rose 2012

While red versions of Pinotage – South Africa’s distinctive crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault – are a bit funky and, for most, an acquired taste, you won’t have to work very hard to fall in love with this dry Pink version.  Riebeek has been growing grapes and making wine in South Africa’s Swartland region since 1941, making them an old-timer in a region that’s exploded with wineries in recent years.  The weather and soils in this part of the Western Cape are Mediteranian, very similar to Provence and Bandol in France.  Not surprisingly, olives thrive here along, of course, with wine grapes.

The 2012 Cape Pinotage Rosé is picked right at the beginning of harvest to preserve freshness and acidity.  After crushing and a short maceration to extract a pale, shimmering, pink color, the wine is fermented dry in stainless steel and bottled and shipped young for immediate enjoyment.  If you don’t see the bottle, you’d swear this was from the hills overlooking St. Tropez and the Mediteranian Sea.  The aromas are redolent of fresh strawberry and tangy cherry fruit accented by a dash of crushed Provencal herb.  Nice body here (despite the 13% alcohol), the berry/cherry fruit and herb get lifted by a note of orange peel freshness.  Long and mouthwatering on the back with just the right amount of chalky mineral and zingy acid.  A fine, versatile, delicious dry rosé to enjoy by yourself or – at this price – to share with a crowd!

Alcesti Rosso l'Isola dei Profumi 2011 Product #27227 (In Stock)
Alcesti Rosso l'Isola dei Profumi 2011 Alcesti Rosso l'Isola dei Profumi 2011

When you think of Sicily, the black fruited, roasted, flavors of gutsy Nero d'Avola come to mind.  But here, classic Nero gets a boost from Perricone, a Sangiovese descendent that offers brighter cherry fruit and plenty of spice. Put them together, and you've got a great warm-weather sipper and companion to spicy foods!  Ripe, fresh, black raspberry and cherry fruit aromas and flavors get lifted by blood orange acidity and a warmed by a dash of spice.  A licorice root note comes up on the juicy finish where blood orange and berry flavors linger nicely.

Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011 Product #26560 (In Stock)
Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011 Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011

Cortese is best known as the grape of Gavi, but it's grown seldom as interesting as this! This wine is surprisingly complex on the nose, although we struggled to put it to words. Think of smelling an herbal infusion with lemon, honey, and lavender on a sunny day. (Fanciful, but it's the best I could do!) In the mouth the wine is clean and crisp with notes of lemon, bees wax, and fresh herbs complicated by something hard to describe but vaguely grapefruity. finishes clean and fresh with just a hint of green apple. this is going to be our "go to" for picnics, cold seafood salads, and simple chicken dishes. A whole lotta wine for the money.

Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2012 Product #27154 (In Stock)
Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2012 Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2012

The motto here is “Gascony seen by a feminine point of view.”  Other than the fact that the estate is led by women, I’m not sure what that really means, but this is a heck of a delicious white for summer sipping.  The blend is 80% Colombard – the main white grape in Gascony – for bright acidity and round texture and 20% Sauvignon Blanc for a big burst of fruit and touch of fresh hay.  The fruit flavors coat your palate with ripe green melon, golden apple, and orange/tangerine flavors set off by lemony acids, a dash of minerality, and a whiff of fresh cut grass.  A great summer sipper that delivers Sauvignon Blanc-like flavors that have been softened and tamed by the Colombard.  Yummy.

De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012 Product #27161 (In Stock)
De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012 De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012

The Falerio DOC sits at the southern end of Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast just East of Umbria.  The relatively new DOC was created in 1975 to promote the region's two best white wine grapes-Passerina and Pecorino-while continuing to allow use of the ubiquitous Trebbiano.

This 2012 Falerio is a fresh, young, wine with all of the refreshing, spritzy qualities of the 2011, but with an extra notch of richness.  The aromas are like sniffing limes and peaches at the beach-plenty of green and orchard fruit aromas with a saline note of the sea in the background.  On the palate, there's loads of ripe, creamy peach and nectarine fruit with a spritz of key lime juice and seltzer followed by a chalky, salty, mineral-driven, finish.  There's a lot of creamy richness here that will please fans of unoaked Chardonnays, but the zesty acidity and mineral element make this super fresh and mouthwatering.  Brilliant with a garlicky scampi and seafood but pretty darn fun to just drink at a party or with friends over antipasti.  Staggering value.

Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2012 Product #27182 (In Stock)
Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2012 Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2012

This is 100% Viura grown in selected sites across Rioja. The ripe grapes are pressed and the juice goes into all new barrels - a mixture of French and American oak and acacia - to ferment and rest for 3 months. After that, the wine moves into stainless steel to complete its maturation, retaining freshness and verve to go along with the light oak influence.

The 2012 is a lot like the 2011 but a tad richer and deeper. Give it a sniff, and you'll be rewarded with pretty springtime aromas of peach, pineapple, and almond blossom. Take a sip and you'll discover a round, creamy, textured wine that's bursting with zesty fruit and juicy acids. After you swallow, you'll notice the fresh flavors lingering nicely as a hint of honey and bitter almond emerge at the end. Almost too easy to drink by itself for refreshment and fun, you'll love how this enhances warm weather favorites like fresh fish, grilled mushrooms, or marinated chicken.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2011 Product #27189 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2011 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2011

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) is a traditional Alto Adige red grape, but seldom seen outside the region.  This example from the excellent Kaltern Caldaro co-op captivated us. It's a delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  Great value, too.

La Cappuccina Soave 2011 Product #25931 (In Stock)
La Cappuccina Soave 2011 La Cappuccina Soave 2011

My original notes say, "crisp and refreshing, but not watery," which sums things up nicely! La Cappuccina's Soave opens with fresh, lemony citrus flavors that make your mouth water, making it a great aperitif wine. Aromas of lemon peel, fresh almonds, and white flowers make you reach for another sip. It finishes with a pleasing saline note, almost a brininess on the palate, that makes it a wonderfully versatile food wine.

I could imagine sipping this with everything from Thai-inspired shrimp to a big entrée salad with grilled chicken (for those of us who haven't thrown in the towel on our New Year's Resolutions yet). It would also sing with a dish with richer, bolder flavors, like pasta with a creamy sauce or some salty, just-melting cheese.

This is also the perfect white to keep knocking around in the refrigerator for those times when you want a glass of wine while you're getting dinner started and unwinding from the day. Put on some nice music and your favorite fuzzy slipper socks (OK, maybe that part is just me) and let all those emails and meetings recede into the background.

Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2011 Product #25970 (In Stock)
Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2011 Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2011

This 100% estate grown Picpoul de Pinet clearly demonstrates just how under-rated this variety is. You’ll find pretty aromas of white flowers, lemon/lime citrus, and anise/fennel notes to start.  Then a crisp, minerally, texture with tart granny smith apple, green melon, and lemon/lime flavors and a clean, dry, finish.  This is just a great all-around daily white, with enough flavor and body to shine by itself at a party and enough complexity and depth to pair well with freshwater fish and lighter poultry dishes.  Tremendous value!

Champteloup Rose d'Anjou 2012 Product #27061 (In Stock)
Champteloup Rose d'Anjou 2012 Champteloup Rose d'Anjou 2012

While we in the USA tend to focus on rosé from the South of France, in Paris pink wine from Anjou in the nearby Loire Valley gets plenty of attention.  And, this is classic Parisian bistro rosé, made from from 70% Grolleau for fruit and 30% Cabernet Franc for herbal notes and spice.  Gentle aromas of cherry, strawberry, and crushed fresh herb lead to a juicy, fruity, mouthful of red berry fruit and a bit more herb.  A hint of watermelon candy comes up in the middle and the finish is frankly fruity and round, but dry and clean.  Cherry and watermelon Jolly Rancher notes linger on.  A fun wine to just sip on it's own and a great match for Asian dishes or anything with fruit.

Dinarells Negre Emporda 2012 Product #27165 (In Stock)
Dinarells Negre Emporda 2012 Dinarells Negre Emporda 2012

This is just shockingly interesting and delicious for the money.  It comes from Spain’s Emporda Costa Brava region in the very northeastern corner of Catalonia near the border with France. It’s steep, rocky, territory that’s regularly lashed by the Tramontane, strong northerly winds that can sweep through the region at 70mph.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with traditional Garnacha and Mazuelo, this is hand-harvested and made in tank.  The show opens with luscious aromas of black plum, crushed blackberries, leather and bitter chocolate with just a touch of lavender.  Then, it’s juicy and fresh in the mouth with loads of sweet blackberry and plum fruit accented by a bit of bitter chocolate, earth and spice flavors. A squirt of blood orange acidity keeps things fresh and dark fruit, nutmeg, and slate notes all linger nicely.  Easy enough to just sip and enough going on to make it a great food wine, too.
