Terra Do Castelo Godello Ribeiro 2012 Product #27545 (In Stock)
Terra Do Castelo Godello Ribeiro 2012 Terra Do Castelo Godello Ribeiro 2012

Wines from this verdant corner of Northeastern Spain were shipped to England in the middle-ages, but the vineyards were virtually abandoned after phylloxera in the 1880s.  100 years later, Ribeiro began its resurgence, offering crisp, mineral-laced, wines from Albarino, Treixadura and, increasingly, Godello.  Like Ribeiro itself, the Godello grape was nearly extinct in the 1970s before growers rediscovered its ability to deliver ripe fruit, crisp acids, fine minerality, and a clear sense of place.

While the grape takes well to wood aging in warmer climates, our favorite examples are wines like this – crisp, clean, and super fresh whites made all in tank.  We love how Terra Do Castelo’s version delivers all of Godello’s and the region’s stony minerality with a big dose of ripe pineapple, tangerine, and lime zest fruit.  It’s a fantastic wine to keep on hand pairing with spring salads, shellfish, or even ham as well as for sipping by itself.  At these prices, it’s a wine to stock up on and enjoy this Spring, Summer, and Fall!

“This Godello is light, fruity and offers nice lime and apple aromas. It’s linear, minerally and has a true slate feel, then stony flavors of tangerine and ripe peach take over. A juicy, pure finish tops it off.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009 Product #29108 (In Stock)
Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009 Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009

Mencia and Bierzo – the region of Spain on the border of verdant Galicia and harsh, dry, Castilla Y Leon – seem made for each other.  In fact, the Mencia grape probably originated here as a mutation of much older, now lost, vines.  And, the Alvarez de Toledo family has about 300 years experience with growing and making wine in Bierzo, so it’s not entirely surprising they got this one right.  This is the kind of nicely fruity, medium-bodied, red that’s fun to drink all by itself and easy to pair with pretty  much anything you put on your weeknight table.  It’s a fine quaffer, but there’s more than enough complexity here if you feel like paying attention.

"Balsamic, leather, and black fruits are the principal notes struck by this suave effort that over-delivers in a big way. Like its older sibling, it can be enjoyed now but will have more to say in 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

La Bastarda Bianco Toscana 2013 La Bastarda Bianco Toscana 2013

As the whimsical label suggests, there's no reason to take this fresh and fruit-filled Trebbiano (70%) and Chardonnay blend too seriously.  Big, juicy, white peach, apricot, and lemon fruit sings out here with more zesty peach fruit and a touch of bitter almond on the finish.  A fine sipper and even better companion for trout, scampi or white fish.

Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Product #29373 (In Stock)
Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011

Number 8 on Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buys of 2014!   The grape blend here is a good example of why folks find Portuguese wine intimidating:  Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelão, Pinot Noir, and Touriga Nacional are in there somewhere!  The winemaking is pretty straight ahead, with fermentation in tank and just a little time in barrel and bottle before release.  But there’s a nice touch of complexity to the plump, juicy, aromas and flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and tangy plum fruit and accents of crushed violets and lavender.  At just 12.5% abv, you can enjoy this solo with a chill or pair it everything from fried chicken to grilled tuna or burgers.

"A dark colored, dense wine that is rich and firmly structured. Aged in wood, it holds flavors of plum and berry fruits balanced with a fresh acidity. This is a wine for aging, its structure a powerful statement. Drink from 2014.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2013 Product #29003 (In Stock)
De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2013 De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2013

Best vintage yet for this fresh, fruit-filled, Italian white. The Falerio DOC sits at the southern end of Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast just East of Umbria.  The relatively new DOC was created in 1975 to promote the region's two best white wine grapes-Passerina and Pecorino-while continuing to allow use of the ubiquitous Trebbiano.

The aromas are like sniffing limes and peaches at the beach-plenty of green and orchard fruit aromas with a saline note of the sea in the background.  On the palate, there's loads of ripe, creamy peach and nectarine fruit with a spritz of key lime juice and seltzer followed by a chalky, salty, mineral-driven, finish.  There's a lot of creamy richness here that will please fans of unoaked Chardonnays, but the zesty acidity and mineral element make this super fresh and mouthwatering.  Brilliant with a garlicky scampi and seafood but pretty darn fun to just drink at a party or with friends over antipasti.  Staggering value.

Returns to Stock June 3 - Pre-Order Yours Now!  If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.  The tannins have softened since the review below, so enjoy right now with grilled foods and warm weather!

"Full of tannins at this stage, it shows power and density. It’s a blend of more than 10 varieties, giving complexity as well as structure. There is acidity as well, bringing together the rich texture and a solid, wood and dark fruit combination. It needs to age a few years, so drink from 2016."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Cava is always good value, but you'll look long and hard to find any sub-$10 sparkling wine that's this good. It's a blend of traditional Cava varietals - Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada - with 30% Chardonnay and fermented in bottle, just like Champagne.  It's rich, yeasty, showing off caramalized apricot flavors, fine bubbles, and finishing zesty and dry.  ** from the Washington Post, too!

Big and rich with plenty of power and a nice floral note, too.

"This 100% Bobal (60 to 80-year-old vines), aged four months in concrete, represents a terrific buy. It possesses excellent delineation as well as lots of blueberry and sweet and sour cherry fruit intermixed with notions of chalk and strawberries. Medium-bodied and fruity with attractive texture as well as purity, it should drink well for several years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Equal parts Grecanico, Inzolia and Grillo from Sicily, this delivers the richness you'd expect from warm Sicily with plenty of citrusy acidity to keep things fresh.  Delivers loads of pineapple, peach, pear and apple fruit with a big squirt of lemony acids and a touch of seashell minerality.  The texture is creamy and round, with no hard edges, but the real story here is the juicy fresh fruit and zesty finish.  A fine alternative to both Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc!

Paul D Roter Veltliner 2013 Product #28742 (In Stock)
Paul D Roter Veltliner 2013 Paul D Roter Veltliner 2013

Pink-skinned Roter Veltliner is completely unrelated to better-known Grüner, and it serves up a richer, more autumnal, set of flavors but with plenty of spicy white pepper accents and a zesty, crisp, finish that will be welcome now and through Indian Summer and beyond!

Aromas of ripe pear, golden apple, ripe peach, buttered nuts and late summer flowers pull you right down into the glass.  In the mouth, the texture is round and rich but still vibrant and refreshing with generous flavors of right off the tree orchard fruits, spicy white pepper, key lime, and just a hint of warm hazelnut.  The flavors turn more tangy and fresh – think Granny Smith apple and just under-ripe peach – on the juicy, crisp, finish where the subtle pepper note lingers nicely.  A definite winner in the “patio pounder” category but with enough richness and complexity to play well with cheese, sausages, or just about any fish or poultry dish.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2011 Product #28669 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2011 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2011

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Even bigger, bolder, more fruit filled, and even more delicious than before (while still pretty garishly packaged).  From vineyards around Rome, the Volpetti packs a punch of lush dark damson plum and black cherry fruit with accents of earth and spice.  A short stay in old oak barrels softens the tannins and adds a hint of sweet balsamic.  Drink this a touch cool with pizza margherita, a bowl of pasta in red sauce, or even a big, juicy, burger and you'll be very, very, happy!

Begali Valpolicella Ripasso Classico La Cigia 2011 Product #29637 (In Stock)
Begali Valpolicella Ripasso Classico La Cigia 2011 Begali Valpolicella Ripasso Classico La Cigia 2011

A stunning Ripasso, very much in line with the wines of the most famous producers in the region at a fraction of the cost.  It’s explosively aromatic, with layer upon layer of dried fruit, sweaty saddle, clove, herb, and more lifted by Ripasso’s characteristic hint of volatility.  Drinking very nicely now, although you can certainly enjoy this over the next few years.

"If you can name but two producers in Valpolicella (I’m betting they are Dal Forno and Quintarelli), it’s now time to add a third: Lorenzo Begali. Lorenzo and his children Giordano and Tiliana make the most exciting wines in the region today. These are inaugural reviews (Begali has never been reviewed by The Wine Advocate). Having now tasted this beautiful collection of new releases, I am a true Begal-iever.

The 2011 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore La Cengia is exceptionally beautiful and balanced. There’s a lot going on: background tones of balsam herb, rosemary and black olive follow straightforward aromas of dried fruit and prune. A pretty touch of eucalyptus springs forth. The wine is incredibly light, buoyant and lively despite the elaborate Ripasso process. Drink 2014-2018."Wine Advocate 90 points
