- Keplinger Sumo 2011 Product #27920 (In Stock)
Helen's husband/partner DJ calls this Petite Sirah blend the "velvet sledghamer." About right, I think! Delicious now with air, but even better next year. Just 190 cases made of this ripe, perfectly balanced, explosive red.
"Keplinger's 2011 Sumo tastes like a young wine right out of tank, such is the purity of its fruit. Cloves, menthol, tar, licorice and blueberries meld together in an intense, inky Petite Sirah loaded with class. I would drink the 2011 early and cellar the 2010 for another few years. A juicy, expressive finish rounds out this soft, beautifully contoured wine. In 2011 Sumo is 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah and 4% Viognier." Antonio Galloni 93 points
- Relic Old Vine Petite Sirah 2011 Product #28444 (In Stock)
From the legendary Frediani Vineyard, in Calistoga, just up the road from Araujo and next to Hundred Acre’s new vineyard. Current owner/farmer Al Frediani’s father purchased this site shortly after arriving in the USA from Italy in the early 1900s. Al, now 92 years-old, worked the vineyards as a child and personally planted the Petite Sirah vines in the late 1940s. Since then, he’s never watered the vines, never sprayed them with insecticides, and more or less them along – other than occasionally pulling up a weed here and there.
The combination of 2011’s cool weather and the well-drained soils created unbelievable complexity and elegance in what is fast becoming one of Napa’s benchmark Petite Sirahs. The aromas are fabulous, exploding with dark black plum, blackberry, dusty cocoa and hot rock scents. The palate is every bit as big, rich, and unctuous as you’d expect from Petite Sirah, but shows unusual elegance and poise for such a big wine. Black fruits, white pepper, bitter chocolate, and purple floral flavors shimmer across your lounge before the masses of fine tannin kick in for support. I love how well integrated the alcohol is and the very, very, loooong finish with layers of warm fruit compote, spice, and more. Drink now and for the next half-dozen years or so.
"Generous and expressive, with plenty of rose petal and violet aromatics up front, showing cigar box and red licorice details to the core of plum, wild blackberry and cherry. White pepper and crushed rock details gain momentum on the finish, while dense, velvety tannins give the flavors plenty of traction. Drink now through 2025."Wine Spectator 93 points
