Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2013 375ml Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige 2013 375ml

A whole lot of Pinot Grigio (in a nice half-bottle package) for the  money here from one of Alto Adige's most respected estates. Lightly aromatic and fully flavored with pure apple and peach fruit in the middle and a touch of powdered spice on the finish.  The texture is unusually creamy and sophisticated and bright peach and lime notes come out with air and linger nicely.

Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013 Product #29323 (In Stock)
Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013 Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013

Our first thought when tasting this Pinot Gris was “wow!”  This intensely flavored white from Austria’s Burgenland, an area mostly known for reds, is no wussy, bland Pinot Grigio.  It’s hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks with a bit more skin contact than is usual for a white wine.  This allows the wine to pick up more color and flavor from the grapes’ grayish-pink skins.  The aromas are enormously appealing and perfect for fall – pear, nutmeg, ripe, golden apple, and a little hint of ginger.

About 5% of the wine is fermented in used barriques, rounding out the wine’s edges, and giving that sophisticated hint of spice to its flavor profile.  On the palate, those delicious spicy pear flavors carry through.  This wine packs a ton of richness and flavor into a very reasonable 13% ABV.  It finishes snappy and fresh, and that little bit of ginger kicks right back in.  This is the perfect cocktail party white to get everyone’s mouth watering, but its intensity and weight allows it to stand up to pretty robust food.

Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2014 Product #29978 (In Stock)
Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2014 Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2014

How in the world did this estate on the plains north of Venice make such a terrific Pinot Grigio in the wash-out 2014 harvest?  Beats us, but this is a winner and a screaming value.  Nice, rich, aromas of juicy pear, tangerine zest and a hint of almond lead to a round mouthful of ripe pear, nectarine, and salty caramel flavors that coat your palate and make your mouth water.  There's a hint of fennel frond for extra complexity and fantastic freshness to the rich, ripe, flavors.  Much richer than normal for Pinot Grigio - almost Oregon weight here - with a juicy, fresh, finish.  Again, a winning value!

Fossa Mala Borgo Magnolia Pinot Grigio 2015 Product #30694 (In Stock)
Fossa Mala Borgo Magnolia Pinot Grigio 2015 Fossa Mala Borgo Magnolia Pinot Grigio 2015

Sometimes the crisp, fresh, Pinot Grigio's of Alto Adige just don't fit the bill - you want a richer, broader, wine with a touch more heft.  This generous beauty from just outside Venice does the trick.  Apple and pear fruit take center stage with just a touch of spice and plenty of freshness at the end.  A great sipper and even better with seafood and fruited summer salads. Fun stuff!

Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014 Product #29500 (In Stock)
Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014 Vista Hills Pinot Gris Treehouse Estate 2014

On opening, aromas of golden delicious apple, apple skin, nectarine, Myer lemon peel and waxy white flower.  On the palate, the fruit turns spicier with pear, apple, and honeydew melon at the center and a hint of nuttiness.   The finish pops with bright, vibrant, acidity that lifts the green pear, Acacia flower, and lime pith flavors across a long, dry, finish.  Leaves your mouth watering and green melon and spice flavors lingering.  Drinks like a cross between Pinot Blanc – crisp, bright, green apple-laced – and bone dry Riesling – aromatic, a touch floral, and full of juicy acids.

Give it a few more months – or even a short decant now – and the wine opens beautifully.  The fruit get richer, and riper, picking up a more golden hue and a hint of hazelnut without losing the floral and Myer lemon accents.  The texture gets fleshier and finish more broad and rich, too, but the bright green apple acids and touch of lime zest bitterness keep things fresh and very drinkable. At all times, it’s a delicious match for everything from ham to salmon to seafood to salads or more.  Or just for  sipping on a pretty Spring afternoon.
