A long-time favorite value Pinot Noir returns to form and the shelf!  From the region just outside of Barolo, this is full of fresh red berry aromas and flavors with a touch of fresh earth and floral accents.  Fresh and easy from first sip to the food friendly finish. The Manderin Oriental in DC used to serve this at $12 per glass - we like it even better at this price!

Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2012 Product #29234 (In Stock)
Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2012 Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2012

The best thing about big harvests in great years like 2012 is how many top-notch "little" wines get made.  Here you'll find generous aromas of cherry, cranberry and mint leading to flavors of maraschino cherry, plum, and red berry with just a hint of spice and orange blossom. The light, fresh, texture, soft tannins, and juicy acids make this a delicious quaffer, although there's enough support for it to work with salmon or pork.  Outstanding value in balanced, easygoing, Pinot Noir.

Zorzal Terroir Unico Pinot Noir Tupungato 2013 Product #29310 (In Stock)
Zorzal Terroir Unico Pinot Noir Tupungato 2013 Zorzal Terroir Unico Pinot Noir Tupungato 2013

Always good with a Wine Advocate Pinot Noir review ends with, "Can the price be real?"  It's 100% Pinot Noir with no oak and oodles of ripe Pinot fruit flavors and a juicy, fresh, finish.  Fantastic value.

"The 2013 Terroir Unico Pinot Noir follows the idea of the Terroir Unico range, to show the pure expression of the grape and the place in a line of unoaked wines. This was 20-30% whole-cluster fermented and is very pale colored, almost a rose, very perfumed, with aromas of red fruit and flowers opening to a light to medium-bodied palate, high acidity (blood orange), and a pure, fresh finish. Highly drinkable. Can the price be real? Drink 2014-2016."Wine Advocate 91 points

Gently sparkling with fine fruit: that's the Hillinger Secco, the winery's light pink creation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes. This is easily the best (and most dry) release yet. Pretty in the glass and loaded with aromas and flavors of tangy strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit.  Juicy and refreshingly dry on the tangy finish, this would be a great brunch or warm afternoon drink!

Block Nine Caiden's Vyd Pinot Noir 2014 Product #29574 (In Stock)

This has been one of Robert Parker's favorite "value" Pinot Noirs over the past few years; as he said of the 2013, "Readers looking for an authentic tasting Pinot Noir that sells for a song should check out Block 9. Aromas of sweet red and black cherry fruit intermixed with clove and baking spices are offered in a medium-bodied, earthy, soft, silky style. This amazing Pinot Noir sells for a price that is virtually unheard of for this varietal." Fun stuff.

Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2013 Product #29348 (In Stock)
Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2013 Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2013

Year after year, Leo Hillinger’s Pinot Noir Eveline is one of the best sub-$20 Pinot Noirs we’re able to find.  The 2013 is the best vintage we’ve tried yet. Leo grows his Pinot Noir in Austria’s Burgenland region, where warm air from Central Europe’s Pannonian Plain is balanced by cool breezes and mist from the shallow glacial lake called the Neusiedler See.  Warmth and bright sunshine help Pinot Noir develop its full range of aromas and flavors – cherry, strawberry, blueberry, warm spice, fresh flowers, and damp earth – while retaining a spine of juicy acidity and fine, crisp, tannins.

At first pour, this smells just like a really good $35 Central Coast Pinot with layers of bright red fruit, warm spice, dusty mineral, and a touch of cola.  Take a sip and you’ll find ripe, sweet, fruit riding over base notes of cola and spice and just a touch of fresh earth and smoke.  With a little air (or time in cellar), the wine gets richer, weightier, and more smoky but the pure Pinot fruit holds center stage and a juicy squirt of cranberry acidity and fine-grained tannins give lovely support. Whether you’re looking for an everyday sipper or a great match for ham, lamb, or salmon, it’s a wine you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again – especially at these great sale prices!

Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Product #28495 (In Stock)
Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012

We loved Michael Pozzan's 2007 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros, but haven't been as enthused by subsequent releases - until now!  In what will go down as a great Pinot Noir vintage, this roars back into form with loads of black berry and dark strawberry fruit framed in rich, earthy, spice.  The texture is pure Carneros - nicely plush, but not heavy or over the top - and there's just enough oak for interest and clove spice without drying out the lush fruit.  A winning Pinot value.

Jackhammer Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 Product #29212 (In Stock)
Jackhammer Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 Jackhammer Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012

Yes, the label and name lack a little Burgundian class.  But this is seriously delicious Central Coast Pinot Noir that tastes just like – wait for it – California Pinot Noir!  The talent and experience of the team that formed this value Pinot producer help, but the real secret here is probably California’s outstanding 2012 harvest.  So, here we have perfectly ripe fruit at a very Pinot-like 13.5% abv, all aged in neutral French oak.  Big, rich, aromas of macerated Bing cherries, spice, and a touch of Central Coast cola.  Round and supple in the mouth with more ripe cherry and strawberry fruit complicated by notes of damp earth, smoke, and cola.  The texture is silky smooth, but there’s enough structure here to work with grilled salmon, seared mushrooms, or even lean beef.  A fine Pinot value.

Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013 Product #28814 (In Stock)
Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013 Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013

John Grochau’s easy-drinking, early release, Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee always gives us a nice preview of the vintage to come, and his 2013 leaves us feeling very excited indeed.  John’s hands-off approach to winemaking (“Don’t screw it up” is his motto) and light use of new oak (just 10% here) lets classic Pinot cherry fruit and accents of cranberry, fresh earth, flower petal, and spice shine through clear as a bell.  The fruit shows some of the dark richness found in Willamette’s last hot vintage (2009), but with better freshness and a light, silky, texture that makes this wonderfully easy to drink.  Fantastic value in handcrafted Willamette Valley Pinot Noir!

Vista Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013 Product #29547 (In Stock)
Vista Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013 Vista Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2013

From four different blocks of Vista Hills’ Dundee Hills estate, this is a great example of the charm and richness you’ll find in the best 2013 Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs (and a screaming value, too!).  The estate’s Jory soils easily shed the big dose of late-September rains, allowing the fruit to process the extra water and hang until full ripeness (at 13.3% abv) in early October.  The grapes where hand harvested, sorted twice – in the vineyard and again at the winery – and then aged 14 months in all used French oak to produce 818 cases of lovely, pure, Pinot.

You’ll get 2013’s warm ripeness on the nose, with spicy, earthy, scents of rich black cherry, cranberry, fresh flowers and a hint of blood orange.  On the palate the wine is surprisingly rich and weighty, but with fine transparency and freshness, too.  Complex flavors of cherry, candied cranberry, orange zest, and strawberry are framed by notes of spice, smoke, and earth.  The sweet fruit flavors carry on through the gentle finish where you’ll get a burst of cranberry, cherry and blood orange supported by fresh acids and soft, supple, tannins.  This is a LOT of wine for the money.

Fossil Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2013 Product #29629 (In Stock)

Fossil Point is named for the rugged headland in San Luis Obispo County which features sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Central Coast. These cool coastal vineyards are perfect for Pinot Noir, allowing plenty of ripeness while retaining freshness and fine acidity.  After 14 months in French oak, this opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry, strawberry, rose petal and cedar.  Round and supple in the mouth, the juicy flavors of black cherry and raspberry gain complexity from a dash of sweet spice and leave a dark cola note lingering.

Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml Product #29647 (In Stock)

An Oregon classic, with 40% whole-cluster fruit used in the great 2012 vintage.

"The 2012 Mt Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir comes from vines located above the winery augmented by purchased fruit from notable vineyards. It contains around 40% whole-cluster fruit (one of the central tenets at Cristom), and only undergoes one racking during its 12 months in barrel: one just before filtration and then just before bottling. It has an attractive tertiary/woodland-scented bouquet with dried rose petal notes coming through, much less fruit driven than many other 2012 Pinot Noirs. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It is quite sappy in style with crisp black fruit rather than red, leading to a focused, slightly austere, tobacco-tinged and saline finish. I would afford this a year in bottle for this "classic" style of Oregon Pinot."Wine Advocate 89 points

A stunning 100% Pinot Noir rose with lots of strawberry and watermelon fruit and a lifted, tangy, finish. Beautiful color and package, too.  The fresh fruit, elegant texture, and mineral-laced, chalky, finish led Randy to proclaim, “The best Spanish rosé I’ve ever tasted!”

"Light peach skin color. Lucid strawberry, orange pith and floral scents show a hint of white pepper. Dry and racy on the palate, offering refreshingly bitter red berry skin and citrus fruit flavors and a touch of herbacity. Closes tight and dry, with good focus and length."  Vinous 89 points

Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2012 Product #29277 (In Stock)
Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2012 Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2012

The care, effort and expense that Domaine Vincent Girardin invested in this beautiful Bourgogne Rouge certainly could command a much higher price. 40+ year-old vines, biodynamic farming, extensive handwork in the vineyard, and triple sorting to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the fermenter are all standard here. After a 3 week fermentation and maceration, the wine aged for 10 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.  Larger barrels and just 10% new wood allowed the wine to soften and gain layers of depth and complexity without compromising the pure, lovely, fruit that makes the best 2011 red Burgundies so irresistible.

Even at this young age, you'll already find a sweet and savory perfume of red berries, fresh earth, and dried tobacco wafting from your glass. The palate is richly textured, vibrant, and very pure with generous flavors of dark cherry, black raspberry, walnut, coffee, and a touch of earth. The complex flavors continue on the long finish where supple tannins provide support and the black fruit, coffee, and tobacco notes linger.  Absolutely delicious right now, but sure to keep improving over the next five years or so.

Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero 2010 Product #29390 (In Stock)
Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero 2010 Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero 2010

Pinot Noir has excellent potential in Piemonte's foggy, rolling, hills, with warm summer days driving nice ripeness and cool nights and poor soils helping to retain freshness and grace.  Lajetto is a fine example, a rich, ripe, and really delicious Pinot Noir with just a touch of Nebbiolo style.  Grown on the family’s estate in Asti, this gets extra body and depth from 12 months in small oak barrels.  There’s a nice spice to the dark red fruit and just a touch of Nebbiolo-like tar and roses and finishes smooth and velvety.

Vista Hills Pinot Noir Treehouse Vyd 2012 Vista Hills Pinot Noir Treehouse Vyd 2012

Drawn from the estate’s four best blocks of Dijon and Pommard clone vines, this captures the excitement of the great 2012 vintage very well indeed.  It’s still young and tight on first opening, but time in decanter lets plenty of great stuff peak out.  Aromas of ripe Bing and Rainer cherry make up the core of the nose with accents of sweet spice, fresh earth, licorice, and a hint of cola.  Concentrated and focused on the palate, there’s plenty of rich, loamy, Pinot earthiness here paired with flavors  of black cherry, roasted strawberry, leather, and subtle wood spice.  The texture shows fine density and poise, with fine-grained tannins and orangey acidity nicely integrated into the silky smooth texture.  A lovely young Pinot Noir that's easy to enjoy with duck or salmon now and that will just get better and better over the next few years.
