Gently sparkling with fine fruit: that's the Hillinger Secco, the winery's light pink creation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes. This is easily the best (and most dry) release yet. Pretty in the glass and loaded with aromas and flavors of tangy strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit.  Juicy and refreshingly dry on the tangy finish, this would be a great brunch or warm afternoon drink!

Egret Pinot Noir California 2011 Product #27273 (In Stock)
Egret Pinot Noir California 2011 Egret Pinot Noir California 2011

Here's a very fine value in California Pinot Noir with excellent ripeness, balance (just 13.5% abv) and varietal character (i.e., it actually tastes like Pinot!).  Fruit from across the North Coast ferments cool and ages 10 months in mostly new oak.  Bright, ripe, black and Bing cherries take center stage with attractive accents of fresh earth, mushroom, and gentle oaky spice.  Soft and easygoing, it's a fine party or back porch Pinot that will work well with salmon, grilled pork, and mushroom-flavored dishes.

Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012 Product #28498 (In Stock)
Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012 Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012

Grayson purchases grapes from around California to make small "Lots" of very good value for money wines.  This Pinot Noir is an excellent example. Unlike most California Pinots, it's not overripe or heavy (just 13.1% abv), but there is plenty of juicy berry and cherry fruit with accents of pomegranate, cranberry, and smoky wood spice. Very light tannins and bright, refreshing, acids make this a great choice for drinking with a chill or pairing with a nice cool salmon salad.

Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml

Calera's been on a roll for years now - with this wine hauling in 91-92 point ratings for five vintages in a row.  The 2012 could be their best ever from the limestone vineyards they work with across the Central Coast.  Deep, dark, aromas of berry, spice and violets lead to juicy black currant, plum, cherry and cola flavors with a hint of spice.  The spice and mineral elements gain strength on the soft finish with just a touch of oak at the end.  Outstanding Pinot and superb value.

Dom Frederic Esmonin Bourgogne Les Genevrieres 2012 Product #28260 (In Stock)
Dom Frederic Esmonin Bourgogne Les Genevrieres 2012 Dom Frederic Esmonin Bourgogne Les Genevrieres 2012

In the short 2012 harvest - after and equally light 2011 - most of the "value" has been chased out of red Burgundy.  So we were pretty shocked, and really delighted, to discover this lovely Bourgogne Rouge from Gevrey Chambertin's well-respected Dom Frederic Esmonin. Pretty aromas of red berries, cherry, wildflower, and earth lead to pure flavors of red fruit, spice, and floral accents.  Light in texture but very flavorful, the fine tannins and bright sour cherry acidity provide just enough structure for food or a year or two in cellar.  A fantastic value in authentic, delicious, 2012 Burgundy.

Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Product #28495 (In Stock)
Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012

We loved Michael Pozzan's 2007 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros, but haven't been as enthused by subsequent releases - until now!  In what will go down as a great Pinot Noir vintage, this roars back into form with loads of black berry and dark strawberry fruit framed in rich, earthy, spice.  The texture is pure Carneros - nicely plush, but not heavy or over the top - and there's just enough oak for interest and clove spice without drying out the lush fruit.  A winning Pinot value.

Dom Michel Sarrazin Bourgogne Rouge VV 2012 Product #28253 (In Stock)
Dom Michel Sarrazin Bourgogne Rouge VV 2012 Dom Michel Sarrazin Bourgogne Rouge VV 2012

This is lovely, high-quality, red Burgundy from 35+ year-old vines near Givry, harvested ripe and aged in 25% new French oak. In the ripe 2012 harvest, the aromas are deep and rich with griotte cherry, smoke, and red flower notes swirling in the glass.  On the palate there's nice density and weight for Bourgogne with sweet and tangy cherry fruit accented by a touch of raspberry, smokey oak, and fresh turned earth.  The flavors linger nicely over fine-grained tannins that give the support needed to enjoy this with food today or cellar for a while.  Well-made, classically-styled, Burgundy Pinot Noir at about one-third less cost than you'd expect

Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009 Product #26356 (In Stock)
Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009 Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009

Hard to believe, but the best selling $20 Pinot in the store is even better in 2009 than before.  Once again, a fairly lightly colored, elegant, bottle of Oregon Pinot from the Umpqua Valley. Lovely aromas of berries, mushroom and roses lead to a silky, vibrant, mouthful of fresh strawberries, crunchy cherries and fresh turned earth.  Just a tad more depth and smoke than the fine 2008 and ready to drink now.

"Light red. Zesty redcurrant and cherry aromas are deepened by smoky spices and cola. Lively and sharply focused, offering nervy red berry flavors and silky texture. The spiciness repeats on the energetic finish, which leaves a bitter cherry note behind."International Wine Cellar 88 points

Dom Du Pre Semele Sancerre Rouge 2009 Product #28280 (In Stock)
Dom Du Pre Semele Sancerre Rouge 2009 Dom Du Pre Semele Sancerre Rouge 2009

An absolutely lovey example of Pinot Noir from the flinty hills of Sancerre, all the better for having had a couple of extra years in bottle to mellow and unfold.  Cool, elegant, aromas of dark red cherry, crushed raspberry and wild strawberry swirl in the glass, accented by touches of cocoa, warm stone and spice.  Very pure and bright on entry before the black and red berry fruit fans out across your palate and notes of fresh flowers, bitter chocolate, baking spice, and baked strawberry add complexity and interest.  On the finish, pie cherry acidity and fine, supple, tannins provide support as fruit, spice, and mineral flavors linger on.  Great wine to sip or enjoy with all kinds of food – even Easter lamb or ham!

Meiomi (Belle Glos) Pinot Noir 2012 Product #28741 (In Stock)
Meiomi (Belle Glos) Pinot Noir 2012 Meiomi (Belle Glos) Pinot Noir 2012

Wine Arrives Wednesday, August 27 - Reserve Yours Now!

Joe Wagner started Belle Glos to extend his family’s success and style with Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to Central Coast Pinot Noir.  The Belle Glos wines have certainly done that with just two problems:  the normal $50ish price point and the fancy-looking, but awkward-to-open dripping wax capsule each bottle sports.

Joe created Meiomi to offer a big dose of Belle Glos style and quality at a more reasonable, everyday, price.  The bright red wax is gone (hurray!!!) and the fruit comes from the very best vineyards Joe can find up and down the California coast – sites in Sonoma, Monterey, and Santa Barbara.  Just like Belle Glos, Meiomi is what we like to call “Power Pinot” for its lush, creamy, texture and big aromas and flavors of super-ripe fruit and spicy, vanilla and chocolate, oak.  The 2012 edition is a bit brighter and more juicy than the 2011, with a beam of fresh berry juice running through the rich candied raspberry and black cherry cola notes.  The oak is generous but well integrated, adding a dose of spice and milk chocolate.  It’s big and powerful enough to drink will grilled strip steaks but soft and silky enough to just sip with friends.  And, this week, it’s a very nice deal, too!

Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Product #27687 (In Stock)
Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2011

From a family-owned estate based in Vosne Romanee comes this very serious Bourgogne Rouge.  Unlike  many estates who style their basic Pinot Noirs to be as friendly and approachable young as possible, this has a bit more structure and aging potential than its humble appellation would lead you to think.

Aromas of dark, ripe cherries, mushrooms, and a bit of baking spice lead to classic flavors of savory red fruits.  No overt oak, but the fruit and acidity is nicely supported.  What's really impressive here are the tannins - a little grippy now, but ripe and mouthwatering.  This will benefit from a little more time in bottle, but can be enjoyed now with a little bit of air.  It's the kind of wine that makes you want old-school French bistro food that is decidedly not diet-friendly - a little chicken liver mousse and a crusty baguette, and you wouldn't even need a main course.

Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2011 Product #28513 (In Stock)
Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2011 Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2011

The care, effort and expense that Domaine Vincent Girardin invested in this beautiful Bourgogne Rouge certainly could command a much higher price. 40+ year-old vines, biodynamic farming, extensive handwork in the vineyard, and triple sorting to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the fermenter are all standard here. After a 3 week fermentation and maceration, the wine aged for 10 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.  Larger barrels and just 10% new wood allowed the wine to soften and gain layers of depth and complexity without compromising the pure, lovely, fruit that makes the best 2011 red Burgundies so irresistible.

Even at this young age, you'll already find a sweet and savory perfume of red berries, fresh earth, and dried tobacco wafting from your glass. The palate is richly textured, vibrant, and very pure with generous flavors of dark cherry, black raspberry, walnut, coffee, and a touch of earth. The complex flavors continue on the long finish where supple tannins provide support and the black fruit, coffee, and tobacco notes linger.  Absolutely delicious right now, but sure to keep improving over the next five years or so.

Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River 2010 Product #28299 (In Stock)
Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River 2010 Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River 2010

We don't know much about Bearboat, but they sure do make a nice Russian River Pinot Noir!  Made from fruit purchased from various vineyards around the Valley, vinified carefully and then given 10 months in small French oak.  The wine shows pretty scents of black cherry with a bit of cassis and toast.  In the mouth plenty of stawberry, raspberry and classic Russian River candied cherry fruit are complemented by some nice hints of fresh earth and smoke.  The wine is nicely balanced - rich, but good freshness - and shows a pretty note of licorice on the finish.  Nice wine, nice value.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml Product #26569 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml

Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea Vineyard gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Product #28309 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $40-$50 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're mature, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

In Jean Michel's outstanding 2012, the lovely aromas of crushed griotte (cherry), red raspberry and wild strawberry get richer and more complex as the wine unfurls with air, a touch of fresh leather emerges, and the nutty, toasty, oak fades into the background.  The palate is much more rich, plush, and luscious than the 12.5% alcohol suggest, with lovely ripeness to the juicy red currant, raspberry and tangy cherry fruit.  Chambolle-Muisgny terroir and 50% new oak work together to provide accents of iron ore, coffee, and fresh earth.  This has excellent length on the palate and finish for Bourgogne.  Give it an hour in decanter now or two-10 years in cellar for maximum pleasure.  A fantastic Bourgogne of true Village character.

"There is enough wood to notice surrounding the pretty and fresh red berry fruit aromas. I like the concentration of the vibrant and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess good depth and fine length on the balanced finish. A good example of the genre." Allen Meadows 86-88 points

Dom Larue Saint-aubin 1er Cru Sur Le Sentier Du Clou 2009 Product #27946 (In Stock)
Dom Larue Saint-aubin 1er Cru Sur Le Sentier Du Clou 2009 Dom Larue Saint-aubin 1er Cru Sur Le Sentier Du Clou 2009

Pinot Noir in the Cote de Beaune performed especially well in 2009 – every bit as well as in the Cote de Nuits. And, Didier and Denis Larue certainly hit the jackpot in 2009 with fruit from this fine vineyard in the heart of St. Aubin.  The vines were planted between 1966 and 1995, and the wine was fermented in steel before aging 12 months in small barrel (50% new).

Aromas of crisp, ripe, cherry and raspberry fruit over notes of violets, baking spice, coffee and damp earth. Flavors of juicy red berries and Bing cherry sing out on top with more coffee and a dash of vanilla underneath.  The crisp, ripe, tannins come up on the pretty finish as violet, cherry blossom, and damp earth notes linger. Fantastic value for 1er Cru red Burgundy.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Product #28003 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012

In the big, ripe, 2009 vintage, Ken Wright did something he hadn't done in years - made a Pinot Noir by blending wine from different vineyards.  It had been a big crop and he had some barrels too soft to fit with his single vineyard wines, and making an "entry level" blend seemed more attractive than selling the wine in bulk. We got some, you tried it, and the 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot flew out of the store.

Ken did the same thing in the cooler, more challenging, 2010 and 2011 harvests, but we thought the results were less impressive.  Now in the great 2012 vintage – one Ken ranks among the greatest he’s ever worked – the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is back and firing on all cylinders.  It’s a blend of barrels from some of Oregon’s most famous vineyards:  Abbott Claim, Canary Hill, Carter, Freedom Hill, Guadalupe, McCrone, Meredith Mitchell, Nysa and Savoya.  Like the 2009, it’s rich and expressive, bursting with crushed berry fruit, rose petal, smoke and fresh earth notes.  We suspect there’s a little press wine in the mix, giving the wine a dash of fine-grained tannic support and making it very food friendly.  If you love Ken’s style and have some of his 2012 single vineyard wines, leave ‘em alone for 5 years and drink this now!

Ampelos Cellars Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills 2012 Product #28336 (In Stock)

These guys are best known as a vineyard source for other top Sta. Rita Hills winemakers (e.g. Greg Brewer), but they make a tiny amount of wine on their own as well.  This is a terrific example with more structure and focus than you often find in such ripe, Sta. Rita Hills Pinot.  Fresh Pinot aromas of red berries, wildflowers, and spice open the show and lead to a focused mouthful of cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry fruit with accents of warm spice, earth, and cola.  Gets a little more smoky with air, but stays focused and fresh through the supple, sweetly fruited, finish.  Delicious now - but gone soon, because only 600 cases made!
