Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2013 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2013

A long-time favorite value Pinot Noir returns to form and the shelf!  From the region just outside of Barolo, this is full of fresh red berry aromas and flavors with a touch of fresh earth and floral accents.  Fresh and easy from first sip to the food friendly finish. The Manderin Oriental in DC used to serve this at $12 per glass - we like it even better at this price!

Gently sparkling with fine fruit: that's the Hillinger Secco, the winery's light pink creation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes. This is easily the best (and most dry) release yet. Pretty in the glass and loaded with aromas and flavors of tangy strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit.  Juicy and refreshingly dry on the tangy finish, this would be a great brunch or warm afternoon drink!

Errazuriz Max Reserva Pinot Noir 2012 Product #28951 (In Stock)
Errazuriz Max Reserva Pinot Noir 2012 Errazuriz Max Reserva Pinot Noir 2012

About the last place in the world we expected to find a great value California Central Coast Pinot Noir was...in Chile!  But, it makes sense.  This is 100% Pinot Noir grown just 15 miles inland from the Pacific Coast, and it's a sweet/tart gem.  Juicy raspberry fruit lifted by honest acidity and with savory accents of fresh earth and wood smoke.  This will shine with anything from salmon to duck, but you'll probably be most tempted to just drink the stuff all by itself.  Pretty stellar value.

"This coastal Pinot is round and full in feel, with reedy cherry and plum flavors matched by creamy oak. Briny hints, vanilla and integrated oak help this Pinot finish with elegance." Wine Enthusiast 89 points

Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2012 Product #29047 (In Stock)
Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2012 Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2012

This poised and pretty Pinot Noir is a wonderful value – when you taste as much wine as we do, you know how tough it is to find a Pinot Noir for less than $20 that actually tastes like Pinot!  No such trouble here with this classic Pinot Noir from Leo Hillinger.  This special cuvee made for local importer Klaus Wittauer is named for Leo’s wife, Eveline, at Klaus’s suggestion.  He wanted Leo to name his cuvee for his wife or daughter so that he would always be motivated to use the best fruit for his cuvee.

His suggestion seems to have worked!  This lovely Pinot opens with aromas of ripe berries, violets, and a hint of baking spice and smoke.  It’s fermented in stainless steel to preserve its fresh fruit flavors and mouthwatering acidity.  On the palate, that ripe fruit supports the spicy, smoky flavors, and the lingering finish includes a hint of savory herbs.  12 months of aging in mostly used barrels has softened the tannins and acidity and made this the perfect Pinot to stock up on and enjoy all fall and holiday season long.   Try it with duck or salmon...or even Turkey!

Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml Product #28182 (In Stock)
Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml

Calera's been on a roll for years now - with this wine hauling in 91-92 point ratings for five vintages in a row.  The 2012 could be their best ever from the limestone vineyards they work with across the Central Coast.  Deep, dark, aromas of berry, spice and violets lead to juicy black currant, plum, cherry and cola flavors with a hint of spice.  The spice and mineral elements gain strength on the soft finish with just a touch of oak at the end.  Outstanding Pinot and superb value.

Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Product #28495 (In Stock)
Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012

We loved Michael Pozzan's 2007 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros, but haven't been as enthused by subsequent releases - until now!  In what will go down as a great Pinot Noir vintage, this roars back into form with loads of black berry and dark strawberry fruit framed in rich, earthy, spice.  The texture is pure Carneros - nicely plush, but not heavy or over the top - and there's just enough oak for interest and clove spice without drying out the lush fruit.  A winning Pinot value.

Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013 Product #28814 (In Stock)
Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013 Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee 2013

John Grochau’s easy-drinking, early release, Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvee always gives us a nice preview of the vintage to come, and his 2013 leaves us feeling very excited indeed.  John’s hands-off approach to winemaking (“Don’t screw it up” is his motto) and light use of new oak (just 10% here) lets classic Pinot cherry fruit and accents of cranberry, fresh earth, flower petal, and spice shine through clear as a bell.  The fruit shows some of the dark richness found in Willamette’s last hot vintage (2009), but with better freshness and a light, silky, texture that makes this wonderfully easy to drink.  Fantastic value in handcrafted Willamette Valley Pinot Noir!

Vista Hills Fourmen Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Product #28874 (In Stock)
Vista Hills Fourmen Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Vista Hills Fourmen Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012

Here’s an unbelievable deal on delicious 2012 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir – you’ll look long and hard to find a small production Pinot from Estate grown fruit at anything like this price.  Like more famous neighbors – Domaine Serene, Domain Drouhin, Archery Summit, Sokol Blosser and more – Vista Hills’ 42 acre vineyard relies on altitude and brick-red Jory soils (plus sustainable farming practices) to turn out ripe, elegant, and complex fruit – and never more than in the great 2012 vintage!

The Fourmen Pinot is based on 4 different vineyard blocks and mixes gutsy Pommard with more aromatic, Dijon Clone stock.  The ripe-picked fruit gets a gentle fermentation and then 18 months aging in medium-toast French oak (about 25% new).  Ripe and generous notes of black and red cherry and fresh crushed raspberries get accents of fresh cut flowers, toasted oak, and fresh turned earth.  There’s just enough tannin here to support rich food (duck or salmon would be great), but also keep this easy to drink on its own.  A very nice $30-caliber wine at a much better price!

A great value from the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2010 Paraiso manages to delivery plenty of ripe Pinot fruit without heaviness or over-ripeness.  Raspberry, cherry, and wild berry fruit flavors gain complexity from a touch of earthiness and a kiss of French Oak.  A touch lighter on its feet than the 2010, but delicious all the same and ready to enjoy tonight!

Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Product #27687 (In Stock)
Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2011

From a family-owned estate based in Vosne Romanee comes this very serious Bourgogne Rouge.  Unlike  many estates who style their basic Pinot Noirs to be as friendly and approachable young as possible, this has a bit more structure and aging potential than its humble appellation would lead you to think.

Aromas of dark, ripe cherries, mushrooms, and a bit of baking spice lead to classic flavors of savory red fruits.  No overt oak, but the fruit and acidity is nicely supported.  What's really impressive here are the tannins - a little grippy now, but ripe and mouthwatering.  This will benefit from a little more time in bottle, but can be enjoyed now with a little bit of air.  It's the kind of wine that makes you want old-school French bistro food that is decidedly not diet-friendly - a little chicken liver mousse and a crusty baguette, and you wouldn't even need a main course.

Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2011 Product #28513 (In Stock)
Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2011 Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2011

The care, effort and expense that Domaine Vincent Girardin invested in this beautiful Bourgogne Rouge certainly could command a much higher price. 40+ year-old vines, biodynamic farming, extensive handwork in the vineyard, and triple sorting to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the fermenter are all standard here. After a 3 week fermentation and maceration, the wine aged for 10 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.  Larger barrels and just 10% new wood allowed the wine to soften and gain layers of depth and complexity without compromising the pure, lovely, fruit that makes the best 2011 red Burgundies so irresistible.

Even at this young age, you'll already find a sweet and savory perfume of red berries, fresh earth, and dried tobacco wafting from your glass. The palate is richly textured, vibrant, and very pure with generous flavors of dark cherry, black raspberry, walnut, coffee, and a touch of earth. The complex flavors continue on the long finish where supple tannins provide support and the black fruit, coffee, and tobacco notes linger.  Absolutely delicious right now, but sure to keep improving over the next five years or so.

Purple Hands is the five year-old solo venture of Cody Wright, son of Willamette Valley legend Ken Wright.  His 2013 Willamette Valley Pinot is a fine follow-up to the Wine Spectator 91 point 2012.  The style here is more elegant and floral, with pretty red and blue fruit aromas and flavors accented by notes of fresh earth and wet stones.  There's power here, but grace, too, and its perfectly balanced at just 12.5% abv. Meiomi (Belle Glos) Pinot Noir 2013 Product #29073 (In Stock)
Meiomi (Belle Glos) Pinot Noir 2013 Meiomi (Belle Glos) Pinot Noir 2013

Joe Wagner (of Caymus fame) created Meiomi to offer a big dose of Belle Glos style and quality at a more reasonable, everyday, price.  The bright red wax is gone (hurray!!!) and the fruit comes from the very best vineyards Joe can find up and down the California coast – sites in Sonoma, Monterey, and Santa Barbara.  Just like Belle Glos, Meiomi is what we like to call “Power Pinot” for its lush, creamy, texture and big aromas and flavors of super-ripe fruit and spicy, vanilla and chocolate, oak.  The 2012 edition is a bit brighter and more juicy than the 2011, with a beam of fresh berry juice running through the rich candied raspberry and black cherry cola notes.  The oak is generous but well integrated, adding a dose of spice and milk chocolate.  It’s big and powerful enough to drink will grilled strip steaks but soft and silky enough to just sip with friends.

Dom Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Product #28800 (In Stock)
Dom Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Dom Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge 2011

As importer Neal Rosenthal says, "This wine consistently reflects, in simple form, the classic characteristics of the wines from the area around Nuits Saint Georges: red and black fruits, bright but not too dense color, exquisite balance with lively acidity, somewhat austere at the outset but elegant and savory.”

“The 2011 Bourgogne is a relatively forward, supple wine for Chézeaux. Dark red and black stone fruits, tobacco, menthol and smoke meld together in an expressive, perfumed Bourgogne with considerable early appeal. There is a lot to like here.”   Antonio Galloni 88 points

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Product #28309 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $40-$50 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're mature, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

In Jean Michel's outstanding 2012, the lovely aromas of crushed griotte (cherry), red raspberry and wild strawberry get richer and more complex as the wine unfurls with air, a touch of fresh leather emerges, and the nutty, toasty, oak fades into the background.  The palate is much more rich, plush, and luscious than the 12.5% alcohol suggest, with lovely ripeness to the juicy red currant, raspberry and tangy cherry fruit.  Chambolle-Muisgny terroir and 50% new oak work together to provide accents of iron ore, coffee, and fresh earth.  This has excellent length on the palate and finish for Bourgogne.  Give it an hour in decanter now or two-10 years in cellar for maximum pleasure.  A fantastic Bourgogne of true Village character.

"There is enough wood to notice surrounding the pretty and fresh red berry fruit aromas. I like the concentration of the vibrant and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess good depth and fine length on the balanced finish. A good example of the genre." Allen Meadows 86-88 points

An absolutely lovey example of Pinot Noir from the flinty hills of Sancerre, all the better for having had a couple of extra years in bottle to mellow and unfold.  Cool, elegant, aromas of dark red cherry, crushed raspberry and wild strawberry swirl in the glass, accented by touches of cocoa, warm stone and spice.  Very pure and bright on entry before the black and red berry fruit fans out across your palate and notes of fresh flowers, bitter chocolate, baking spice, and baked strawberry add complexity and interest.  On the finish, pie cherry acidity and fine, supple, tannins provide support as fruit, spice, and mineral flavors linger on.  Great wine to sip or enjoy with all kinds of food – even Easter lamb or ham!

Stangeland Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Product #28337 (In Stock)
Stangeland Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Stangeland Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette 2012

Larry Miller has been growing grapes in the Eola-Amity hills since 1978 - making him a pioneer here - but we're just getting to taste his wines for the first time now. This luscious 2012 is a great introduction, showing off a nice richness, depth and focus to the dark red raspberry and ripe cranberry fruit with just a touch of fresh earth and oak spice.  The red fruit wells up to cloak the ripe tannin on the finish, making this fun to drink now and a solid candidate to improve for a while.

"Smoke-accented red berries and potpourri on the fragrant nose, along with an energetic spiciness and a hint of cola. Juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are underscored by a dusty mineral quality and a hint of cocoa powder. Fine-grained tannins come on late, adding grip to the spicy, very persistent finish. With its distinct vibrancy and nerviness, here's a 2012 that acts a lot like a 2011."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola Cuvee 2012 Product #28689 (In Stock)
Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola Cuvee 2012 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Eola Cuvee 2012

Owner/winemaker at this legendary Willamette Valley estate since 2010, Erin Nuccio used all he learned from Evesham Wood founder Russ Ramey to capture the full magic of Oregon’s 2012 harvest.  Like all Evesham Wood’s estate wines, it’s made naturally from organically farmed grapes harvested earlier than most – perfectly ripe but still bursting with juicy acid.

If you loved the La Grive Bleue, you'll be fascinated by the fuller, darker aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, and a hint of earthy mushrooms and forest floor.  On the palate, it's satisfyingly mouthfilling, with flavors of ripe blackberries, and dusty tannins.  Despite its fuller body and darker fruit flavors, the finish is clean and mouthwatering.  A perfect match for grilled salmon or duck.  Delicious!
