Here’s a surprise – a value-priced Pinot Noir that’s a) from Chile; and b) really tastes like Pinot Noir!  The aromas feature spicy cranberry and raspberry fruit with a dash of fresh earth and a touch of Chile’s signature herbal notes.  In the mouth it’s supple and sweetly fruited with raspberry and blueberry fruit plus a bit of nutskin and a juicy, clean, finish.  Easy to sip solo and a fine match for wide range of foods.  And, very, very, fine value!

A new Pinot Noir California Pinot specialist is normally nothing much to get excited about, but these guys are really on to something.  This 100% Pinot from around California aged in all French oak (but not much new) and delivers honest scents of smoky Pinot fruit and a nice mouthful of vibrant Pinot flavors:  cherry, pomegranate, fresh earth, and spice.  Nicely ripe at just 13.1% alcohol and with juicy, tangy, acidity, it's refreshing and fun to drink on its own or with salmon, salads, or pizza.  Great stuff that you'll want to try.

Castle Rock Pinot Noir Monterey 2009 Product #25381 (In Stock)
Castle Rock Pinot Noir Monterey 2009 Castle Rock Pinot Noir Monterey 2009

Castle Rock is America's top value Pinot Noir producer, although which cuvee is best varies from year to year.  This year, we like the Monterrey County Pinot the best for it's ripe fruit, good weight, and accents of cola and spice. The flavors are ripe and kissed with a touch of oak, but stay true to Pinot Noir's character and grace.  Velvety and smooth and great value.

Mandolin Pinot Noir Monterey 2011 Product #26867 (In Stock)
Mandolin Pinot Noir Monterey 2011 Mandolin Pinot Noir Monterey 2011

It's too darn hard to find honest, ripe and balanced California Pinot Noir for less than $20 these days, which is why we are so thrilled to have found this!  Fruit comes from in and around the Sta. Rita Hills, where cooling daily winds help Pinot retain freshness even as it ripens fully in the bright sun. The aromas are honest and earthy, with dark black fruit framed by a bit of earth and smoke.  Then ripe and round in the mouth with black cherry fruit, cola notes, and a touch of smoke and earth on the end.  A tad forward, but very tasty and outstanding value.

Here's a wonderfully fresh and fruit filled (but European) Pinot that's very Beaujolais like in its tangy fruit and earthy complexity.  The flavors show off cranberry and sour raspberry fruit with a touch of earth at first then get riper and more juicy on the soft and easy finish.  Very easy drinking and fresh like good Gamay but with a touch more Pinot earth. A young-vines, all tank, wine from Italy's top Pinot Noir specialists, four-time winners of the coveted Tre Bicchieri award for their top Pinot Noir!

Paraiso Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2009 Product #24687 (In Stock)
Paraiso Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2009 Paraiso Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2009

The 2009 growing season consisted of high winds, dry days, and bay fogs to create a cool, but very long, growing season. These growing conditions are ideal for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, and lead to full, forward fruit flavors and ideal acidity. The 2009 Estate Pinot Noir is a fine example of clonal diversity coming together in one wine. The focus is decidedly Burgundian, with flavors of raspberry, cherry and wild berries, good acidity, and a nice French oak complexity.

There's a surprising amount of complexity and heft in this fine value Sonoma County Pinot Noir.  The fruit is from Sonoma's cooler regions, giving this a lovely blend of ripe dark fruit without any heaviness.  Dark cherry and raspberry fruit aromas and flavors are accented by dashes of toasted baking spices.  Silky in the middle and easy and soft on the lingering finish.  A fine Pinot for Asian foods with a little spice or roasted meats and turkey.

Yes, this is the "geekiest" white wine in the store - a white made from 100% Pinot Noir (yup - Noir, not Blanc) in the southern part of Lombardy.  But, it's here because it's just crazy delicious and will delight anyone who love Pinot Gris or Chardonnay.  Aromas of red berries, apple and almond lead to a fully flavored, richly textured, mouthful of orchard fruits and just a hint of cherry.  Gain minerality in the middle and on the long, juicy, finish.  A terrific choice for pre-dinner sipping with nibbles or all kinds of seafood or poultry dishes.

Another winner from one of Oregon's best. As always, a bit of whole-cluster fruit adds complexity, as does 23 months in barrel (about 25% new).  Lovely.

"Light, bright red. Red berry and floral scents are complemented by cinnamon and black tea. Racy and light on its feet, offering vibrant redcurrant and strawberry flavors and a touch of bitter herbs. Finishes tangy and lucid, leaving spice and floral notes behind."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009 Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009

Hard to believe, but the best selling $20 Pinot in the store is even better in 2009 than before.  Once again, a fairly lightly colored, elegant, bottle of Oregon Pinot from the Umpqua Valley. Lovely aromas of berries, mushroom and roses lead to a silky, vibrant, mouthful of fresh strawberries, crunchy cherries and fresh turned earth.  Just a tad more depth and smoke than the fine 2008 and ready to drink now.

"Light red. Zesty redcurrant and cherry aromas are deepened by smoky spices and cola. Lively and sharply focused, offering nervy red berry flavors and silky texture. The spiciness repeats on the energetic finish, which leaves a bitter cherry note behind."International Wine Cellar 88 points

Folk Machine Pinot Noir Central Coast 2011 Product #26751 (In Stock)
Folk Machine Pinot Noir Central Coast 2011 Folk Machine Pinot Noir Central Coast 2011

Kenny Likitprakong is probably nuts, but he's certainly making some really interesting wine!  Kenny likes wines that are lower in alcohol both for their greater refreshment and balance, and because it means he can drink more. He's put some very fine vineyards under long-term contract so he can have them farmed the way he likes, producing perfectly ripe fruit that can be harvested while sugars are lower and bright acids are still intact.

His Folk Machine Pinot Noir is a fine example, showing a lovely, ripe, California Pinot nose of red fruit, spice, and earth.  In the mouth, light, fresh, and refreshing with more pretty red fruit, floral notes, and a juicy, citric, mouthwatering, finish.  More like a fine Bourgogne rouge than Central Coast Pinot, perhaps, but very tasty and appetizing.

Nicely concentrated and complex, conveying a strong impression of solid soil-driven extract to go with its red fruit and smoke flavors. Sweet tannins are nicely supported by the wine's stuffing. Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River 2009 Product #27017 (In Stock)
Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River 2009 Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River 2009

We don't know much about Bearboat, but they sure do make a nice Russian River Pinot Noir!  Made from fruit purchased from various vineyards around the Valley, vinified carefully and then given 10 months in small French oak.  The wine shows pretty scents of black cherry with a bit of cassis and toast.  In the mouth plenty of stawberry, raspberry and classic Russian River candied cherry fruit are complemented by some nice hints of fresh earth and smoke.  The wine is nicely balanced - rich, but good freshness - and shows a pretty note of licorice on the finish.  Nice wine, nice value.

Delicious, lush flavors of red plum, raspberry and strawberry fill the palate with toasty note of nutmeg on the finish. A GREAT value for Cali Pinot. Easily drinks well above its price point. A classic Saint Aubin red, loaded with vivid cherry fruit and snappy spice, this opens with pretty aromas of black cherry, Bing cherry, pomegranate and fresh ground coffee.  In the mouth, a cheerful interplay of ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit with milk chocolate and baking spice accents.  Much more richly textured than you’d expect from Saint Aubin, almost creamy in fact, with very fine-grained, supple, tannins providing support.  Absolutely delicious right now, with all the depth and even lushness you’d hope for in 2009, but wouldn’t expect from Saint Aubin.  Very, very, fine value in top-notch, fun to drink, red Burgundy!

Maillard Chorey les Beaune Rouge 2009 Product #25962 (In Stock)
Maillard Chorey les Beaune Rouge 2009 Maillard Chorey les Beaune Rouge 2009

Even more than in the past, this is as fine a bottle of Pinot Noir as we sell for $30 or less. Pascal farms five different parcels in Chorey-les-Beaune and vinifies each on its own.  Every winter, importer Olivier Daubresse works with Pascal to create a selection from the five tanks that demonstrates the best balance of forward fruit, earth, and ripe tannins. The 2009 vintage is, quite simply, the best Chorey Rouge Pascal has ever made.

Give it a swirl and you’ll find big, luscious, aromas of black and Bing cherry, red currant, Asian 5 spice, dark coffee and smoke.  In the mouth it’s rich and powerful for a village wine with velvety spiced raspberry and cherry fruit, spice cake, roasted coffee and grilled mushroom flavors.  Ripe and round in the middle, the wine snaps into precise, minerally, focus on the back palate and finish as notes of smokey mineral, crisp raspberry, and cocoa powder linger over fine-grained tannins. My note from January 2012 reads “That’s a winner.  Buy lots.”  Best advice I can give you.

Vajra Langhe Rosso PN Q497 (Pinot Noir) 2009 Vajra Langhe Rosso PN Q497 (Pinot Noir) 2009

Yes, it's a Pinot Noir from Italy, but think "Gevrey Chambertin meets Sta. Rita Hills" and you'll be better prepared for the nectar in this funky bottle from "traditionalist" Aldo Vajra.  The wine comes from the top of Bricco di Vergne, just a touch too high up for Nebbiolo to ripen.  Recognizing that most Barolo-lovers view Pinot Noir as a reference-point grape, in 1999 Aldo decided to plant a few acres of Pinot up here to see what would happen.

The results will blow you away.  The scents and flavors veer back-and-forth between Burgundian structure and minerality and California juicy fruit and spice.  Loads of crunchy ripe raspberry fruit over moist black earth, mushroom and leather with more ripe red fruit welling up from underneath.  Firm and focused, this is for the table but will delight any Pinot lover with salmon, duck, or mushrooms.
