Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2015 Product #30859 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2015 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2015

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Dom Brunet Pinot Noir Pays D' Oc 2015 Dom Brunet Pinot Noir Pays D' Oc 2015

A whole lot of Pinot Noir for the money here, marrying French elegance with New World ripeness.  Sweetly fruited with notes of baked cherry and dark raspberry plus added complexity from doses of earthy mineral and warm spice.  Spiced raspberry and black cherry flavors linger on the soft, supple, finish with just enough bite for shape and structure.  In 2015, shows even more weight and richness but stays fresh and easy-drinking from beginning to end. Fun stuff and great value!

Beau Chene Pinot Noir Vdp 2015 Beau Chene Pinot Noir Vdp 2015

Pinot Noir from the South of France has gotten a bit of a bad name (even when it is, in fact, Pinot Noir!), but when done well it can be delicious and stunning value.  And that's what we have here.  Nice and fleshy with plenty of ripe plum, cherry and red berry fruit aromas and flavors with hints of spice and earth. Finishes with friendly tannins and lingering flavors of spice, red fruit and earth.  A surprising amount of complexity and flesh here for the money in a fine, honest, tasty Pinot you'll enjoy with salmon, poultry, or just hanging out with friends.  Excellent value.

Gently sparkling with fine fruit: that's the Hillinger Secco, the winery's light pink creation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes. This is easily the best (and most dry) release yet. Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Nero 2015 Product #31302 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Nero 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Nero 2015

Pinot Nero from the high altitude, but surprisingly warm, vineyards around Bolzano has never been better than in the stunning 2015 harvest.  Kaltern is a super-premium co-op winery that sources it's Pinot Noir from vineyards looking down over Lake Kaltern.  In 2015, the grapes ripened to an extra level of richness and complexity, both of which were captured and nurtured perfectly through a slow fermentation and 7 months aging in large and small oak cask.  The color is a dense cherry red and the aromas ripe red cherry, raspberry, and a hint of fragrant summer flowers.  On the palate there's good richness but modest weight - a pretty 13% abv here - with layers of cherry/red berry fruit, sweet spice, and fresh turned earth that keep on flowing through a long, supple, finish.  It's a bit like a 2014 Willamette Valley Pinot but still definitely Italian.  An outstanding Pinot Noir value and a great selection for a crowd.

This has been one of Robert Parker's favorite "value" Pinot Noirs over the past few years; as he said of the 2013, "An authentic tasting Pinot Noir that sells for a song...Aromas of sweet red and black cherry fruit intermixed with clove and baking spices are offered in a medium-bodied, earthy, soft, silky style." Another solid release in the fine 2015 vintage and still a great deal. Fun stuff.

Shelter Pinot Noir Lovely Lilly Baden 2014 Product #31629 (In Stock)
Shelter Pinot Noir Lovely Lilly Baden 2014 Shelter Pinot Noir Lovely Lilly Baden 2014

We don't see much German Pinot Noir (or Spätburgunder as it's called there) in the USA and what we do find is either very light or pretty pricy.  So this lovely example from Baden is an extra treat because it's both delicious and affordable! Generous sweet/tart cherry/berry fruit with nicely earthy undertones and a touch of citrusy/pommegranite acidity on the fresh, juicy, finish.  As you can see from the label, "Lovely Lilly" is the owners' dog, an appropriate image for this friendly, welcoming, Pinot Noir.

Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014 Product #30943 (In Stock)
Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014 Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014

Fossil Point is named for the rugged headland in San Luis Obispo County which features sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Central Coast. These cool coastal vineyards are perfect for Pinot Noir, allowing plenty of ripeness while retaining freshness and fine acidity.

The 2014 edition is simply superb, about as fine a California Pinot Noir value as we've seen in years.  Loads of sweet, ripe, red and black fruit on the nose and palate with a kick of smoke and sweet spice from 14 months in French oak.  A blood orange note comes out with air, lending freshness to match the classic California richness before the sweet spice and dark fruit come up on the long, pure, finish.  Really, really, good stuff.

Frecciarossa Pinot Nero Sillery (White Pinot Noir) 2015 Product #31202 (In Stock)
Frecciarossa Pinot Nero Sillery (White Pinot Noir) 2015 Frecciarossa Pinot Nero Sillery (White Pinot Noir) 2015

Sure, we admit it - this caught our attention because it's a rare white wine made from black-skinned Pinot Noir and "Pinot Nero Bianco" is fun to say.  And because it's from Oltrepo Pavese, a stunning slice of Lombardy south of Milan famous for rich wines in Roman times and known as Italy's top Pinot Noir region today.

It landed on our shelves because it's drop dead gorgeous!  Aromas and flavors of white peach, crushed strawberry, Rainer cherry and fresh herb are inviting and complex, and the rich, polished, texture and long finish are deeply satisfying.  A great wine for rich seafood dishes (think scallop risotto) or sophisticated sipping.  A bit of a rarity that may be gone too soon - grab it now while you can.

Ch De Vaux Les Hautes-Bassieres Pinot Noir Moselle 2014 Product #31064 (In Stock)
Ch De Vaux Les Hautes-Bassieres Pinot Noir Moselle 2014 Ch De Vaux Les Hautes-Bassieres Pinot Noir Moselle 2014

Moselle, along the Mosel River before it flows into Germany, was once a rival to Champagne.  The Franco-Prussian war, phylloxera, and WWI and II took a heavy toll, and today this region along the border with Luxembourg is pretty obscure. But, Norbert and Marie-Geneviève Molozay recognized the region's potential (especially in an era of warming climate), and launched Ch de Vaux in 1996 to prove it.

Pour a glass of this and you’ll immediately notice a good deal more color than you’d expect from such a cool climate.  The nose delivers on the promise of richness and depth with complex aromas of raspberry, dark cherry, wood smoke, and forest underbrush flowing out of the glass.  On the palate, it does just what a great holiday red should.  There’s more than enough ripe fruit to survive the onslaught of big dinner flavors with smoky/savory accents that will highlight stuffing and autumn vegetable sides.  The tang of fresh cranberry on the finish evokes the dish of Aunt Martha’s sauce and, more importantly, refreshes your palate and gets you ready for the next forkful.  Delicious, if obscure, and excellent value!

St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2014 Product #31271 (In Stock)
St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2014 St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2014

Always one of the greatest values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, the 2014 is the best in years, perhaps better than the Wine Spectator 92 point 2008.  In 2014 the vineyard sources read like a who’s who of great sites:  Zenith, Vitae Spring, Temperance Hill, Freedom Hill, Momtazi Vineyard and even the legendary “Grand Cru” Shea Vineyard.  A warm fermentation and gentle pump-overs extract richness and give the wine a velvet feel.  A year in mostly used oak rounds off the edges and adds just a touch of subtle spice.

The result is a sophisticated, velvety, and layered wine that puts many more expensive bottlings to shame!  You’ll find loads of fresh cherry, dark berry, ground spice, and subtle anise aromas and generous flavors of wild berries and cherries, spice and fresh flowers.  The wine envelops your palate with deeply earthy richness, but stays light and pure and fresh through a finished laced with just-picked fruit, spice, and fine tannins.  Beautiful right now through 2021 with everything from white meats to meaty fish (salmon, tuna) and rich lentil or bean dishes.  Delicious value!

"A sensational value, this blends fruit from a half-dozen vineyards that carry the winery's vineyard designates. Soft and appealing flavors mix citrus, plum and berry in a juicy, wide open, flat out delicious bottle. The fruit is the star, although a year in 9% new French oak adds a nice touch of toast."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

The small but very nice 2015 vintage gave us ripe but nicely fresh Pinot's from this part of California, and this is a great example.  Pretty plum and wild strawberry aromas add notes of spice and chocolate with air.  The aromas carry over to the nicely rich but still elegant Pinot that finishes silky and smooth.  Will take a light chill if you like and very fine value.

"A very pretty wine in its class, with vibrant red cherry fruit, sweet floral notes and lovely overall radiance. Super bold and rich this vintage but still with elegance and focus to spare.  Lovely value.

"Brilliant ruby-red. Highly fragrant, spice-accented aromas of red and dark berry preserves and floral pastilles; a hint of vanilla emerges with air. Expansive raspberry and cherry-cola flavors are energized and lifted by juicy acidity and a late jolt of white pepper. Packs a solid punch but comes off lithe, finishing with excellent focus, well-knit tannins and strong persistence."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2014 Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2014

Burgundy's 2014 vintage gave us silky, supple, reds with lovely fruit and plenty of classic Burgundy terroir.  Here's a great example from 4.5 acres mainly in and near Vosne-Romanee. Ripe, hand-harvested, fruit is 100% destemmed, fermented in tank and then aged in twice-used French oak.  There's a very pretty perfume of tangy red cherry, raspberry, violets and a hint of something earthy - or "animal" as the winemaker says.  On the palate it's very pure and fresh and transparent with a silky feel to the tart cherry/raspberry fruit.  Stony minerality and fine tannins provide support to this very pretty, very delicious, Pinot Noir.  Drink now - 2020 or so.

As Burghound sais, this is just classic Chassagne Rouge that is enjoyable right now (decant for an hour) and will be at peak in 2018 or so.  Decant the wine, roast a chicken, and be very happy.

"An expressive, even perfumed nose features notes of pepper, red currant, cassis and plenty of pungent earth character that can also be found on the supple, round and agreeably vibrant middle weight flavors. There is good intensity and lovely detail to the moderately firm and rustic finish that is both well-balanced and persistent. A classic Chassagne rouge."Allen Meadows 89 points

Ernie Pink and Dena Drews craft this lovely Pinot to tell the story of their vineyard in the vintage, blending different clones and parcels from across their 35 acre site perched above Freedom Hill.  In 2010 it's beautiful with the elegance and purity of this remarkable vintage and the open sophistication that only a little time in bottle reveals.  Lovely now and through 2020.

"Bright red. Smoky, mineral-accented black raspberry and rose oil aromas are complemented by hints of cinnamon and allspice. Gently sweet red fruit flavors are given depth by a cherry pit nuance and sharpened by juicy acidity. Silky in texture and appealingly sweet, finishing with very good clarity, subtle tannins and noteworthy spicy persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Weber Vyd 2014 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Weber Vyd 2014

6 cases available.  Art Weber planted this Dundee Hills site in 1976 just down the road from Maresh Vyd, and Jim Maresh has made wine from own-rooted Pommard planted in 1976 and 1983 since 2010.  It's a nice step up from the Dundee Hills bottling, with more richeness, deeper fruit, and lots and lots of perfume.  More open and forward than the Maresh Vyd, this is a delicious choice to drink now - 2029 or so.

"Vivid red. Mineral- and spice-tinged aromas of fresh red berries and candied rose develop a hint of incense as the wine opens up. Shows impressive clarity and lift in the mouth, offering sappy raspberry, spice cake and floral pastille flavors joined by a jolt of smoky minerals. Finishes very long and gently sweet, featuring subtle tannins and strong, floral-driven persistence." Vinous (Raynolds) 92 points

"The 2014 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1983. It has a very refined bouquet with red cherry, wild strawberry, sous-bois and subtle floral notes - very complex and classy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, nicely structured with a gentle grip. The fruit veers towards the darker side of the spectrum towards the finish, with blackberry and cranberry fruit, long and edgy. Classy, composed and cool, this is how to make world-class Pinot Noir."Wine Advocate 93 points
