Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2013 Product #30468 (In Stock)
Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2013 Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2013

The best thing about big harvests in great years like 2013 is how many top-notch "little" wines get made.  Here you'll find generous aromas of cherry, cranberry and mint leading to flavors of maraschino cherry, plum, and red berry with just a hint of spice and orange blossom. The light, fresh, texture, soft tannins, and juicy acids make this a delicious quaffer, although there's enough support for it to work with salmon or pork.  Outstanding value in balanced, easygoing, Pinot Noir.

Poppy Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2013 Product #30208 (In Stock)
Poppy Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2013 Poppy Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2013

Who says you can't find good value in balanced, delicious, California Pinot Noir!  This gem from cool vineyards in the Central Coast's Arroyo Seco gets a pretty luxurious treatment.  The grapes are harvested by hand and come to the winery cool.  After crush, fermentation starts and stays cool and slow to preserve plenty of fruit with gentle pump-overs to extract color and structure.  Then, into French oak barrels to age for 10 months or so, allowing the wine to come together and harmonize.

Give it swirl and you'll enjoy the classic Pinot scents of dark cherry, raspberry, fresh earth and spice.  In your mouth, the flavors spread out nicely with good energy and breadth, but never get heavy or clunky - just 13.5% abv and good acidity helps.  The dark berry, spice and smoke flavors flow through the generous, crisp, finish with berry and caramel notes lingering nicely.  Fresh, generous, easy-drinking, and well priced.

This has been one of Robert Parker's favorite "value" Pinot Noirs over the past few years; as he said of the 2013, "An authentic tasting Pinot Noir that sells for a song...Aromas of sweet red and black cherry fruit intermixed with clove and baking spices are offered in a medium-bodied, earthy, soft, silky style." Another solid release in the fine 2015 vintage and still a great deal. Fun stuff.

Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2014 Product #30749 (In Stock)

Year after year, Leo Hillinger’s Pinot Noir Eveline is one of the best sub-$20 Pinot Noirs we’re able to find.  The 2014 is delicious once again. Leo grows his Pinot Noir in Austria’s Burgenland region, where warm air from Central Europe’s Pannonian Plain is balanced by cool breezes and mist from the shallow glacial lake called the Neusiedler See.  Warmth and bright sunshine help Pinot Noir develop its full range of aromas and flavors – cherry, strawberry, blueberry, warm spice, fresh flowers, and damp earth – while retaining a spine of juicy acidity and fine, crisp, tannins.

At first pour, this smells just like a really good $35 Central Coast Pinot with layers of bright red fruit, warm spice, dusty mineral, and a touch of cola.  Take a sip and you’ll find ripe, sweet, fruit riding over base notes of cola and spice and just a touch of fresh earth and smoke.  With a little air (or time in cellar), the wine gets richer, weightier, and more smoky but the pure Pinot fruit holds center stage and a juicy squirt of cranberry acidity and fine-grained tannins give lovely support. Whether you’re looking for an everyday sipper or a great match for ham, lamb, or salmon, it’s a wine you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again!

Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml Product #29647 (In Stock)
Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml Cristom Pinot Noir Willamette Mt. Jefferson 2012 375ml

An Oregon classic, with 40% whole-cluster fruit used in the great 2012 vintage.

"The 2012 Mt Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir comes from vines located above the winery augmented by purchased fruit from notable vineyards. It contains around 40% whole-cluster fruit (one of the central tenets at Cristom), and only undergoes one racking during its 12 months in barrel: one just before filtration and then just before bottling. It has an attractive tertiary/woodland-scented bouquet with dried rose petal notes coming through, much less fruit driven than many other 2012 Pinot Noirs. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It is quite sappy in style with crisp black fruit rather than red, leading to a focused, slightly austere, tobacco-tinged and saline finish. I would afford this a year in bottle for this "classic" style of Oregon Pinot."Wine Advocate 89 points

Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Rouge Clos de l'Eveche 2013 Product #29797 (In Stock)
Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Rouge Clos de l'Eveche 2013 Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Rouge Clos de l'Eveche 2013

With its gentle slope down the hill from the winery, the clay limestone soils of Clos de l'Eveche drain beautifully and give the 25 year-old vines plenty of sunshine.  Vincent Jouissier treats the lovely fruit with care, allowing it to ferment and soak slowly over 14 days before aging the wine for a full year in French oak casks.  It’s the kind of care and quality you’d expect from a much more expensive Pinot Noir!

Bright currant, crisp Bing cherry, tangy raspberry, warm spice, and just a touch of smoke waft from the glass and pull you in to taste.  The palate follows the aromas, with a juicy freshness that makes balances and highlights the sweet richness of the raspberry, cherry, and red currant fruit.  The touch of tank, hint of fresh earth, and river stone minerality marks this clearly as Burgundy, but the super silky texture and sweetness of fruit will seduce fans of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, too.  The finish is simply lovely for such a young wine, with crushed raspberry, sun-warmed strawberry, and tangy dried cranberry fruit pulsing out over mouthwatering acids and very fine, very ripe and sweet, tannins.  Right now – especially with a light chill – this is a brilliant wine for a sophisticated summer picnic, but give it air or a little cellar time (it’ll go 5 years easily), and you’ll enjoy it with richer foods like salmon, roast chicken, or duck.

Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Product #30007 (In Stock)
Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette 2012 Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette 2012

John Grochau sources fruit for this multi-vineyard Pinot Noir from organic and sustainably farmed vineyards up and down Willamette Valley.  In 2012 he made under 1,000 cases with about 30% whole cluster and around one-quarter new oak.

At first very spicy on the nose with notes of cinnamon, cardamom, and coriander weaving in and out of the black cherry and raspberry fruit, getting more sauve and integrated with a little air.  The texture is simply beautiful, with a pure, silky, mouthfeel, fine length, and long, supple, dusty tannins at the end.  The Bing cherry, raspberry and very ripe strawberry fruit flavors are nicely complicated by accents of sweet spice and fresh earth that linger nicely on the juicy, spicy, finish.  Delicious right now, better next year, and delicious through 2019 or so.

"Brilliant red. Red berries, fresh rose and smoky Indian spices on the pungent nose. Chewy and sharply focused, displaying good lift and spine to its ripe cherry and raspberry flavors, with a peppery element emerging with air. Turns sweeter on the finish, which features dusty tannins and a touch of cola."  Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014 Product #30943 (In Stock)

Fossil Point is named for the rugged headland in San Luis Obispo County which features sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Central Coast. These cool coastal vineyards are perfect for Pinot Noir, allowing plenty of ripeness while retaining freshness and fine acidity.

The 2014 edition is simply superb, about as fine a California Pinot Noir value as we've seen in years.  Loads of sweet, ripe, red and black fruit on the nose and palate with a kick of smoke and sweet spice from 14 months in French oak.  A blood orange note comes out with air, lending freshness to match the classic California richness before the sweet spice and dark fruit come up on the long, pure, finish.  Really, really, good stuff.

How does a $40 Willamette Pinot that earned a fine 91 point rating in 2012 end up available too you from half-off?  It’s a long story, but the conclusion is simple:  this is the Oregon Pinot Noir buying opportunity of the year and one of the best Pinot deals we’ve brought you ever!  From a tiny, 2 acre, vineyard at 800 feet elevation in Oregon’s Chehalem Mountain region, this blends a range of Pinot clones all grown on volcanic Jory soils.

It's a great example of the elegant, pure, and very refreshing wines that represent the best of Oregon’s 2013 harvest.  You'll find a lovely perfume of crushed raspberry, fresh strawberry, and red pie cherry fruit with hints of lavender and spice.  Pure, vibrant, and silky on the palate, the ripe and tangy cherry/berry fruit takes center stage with subtle accents of spice and smoked stone.  The smoky notes are a hallmark of Willamette Valley's volcanic Jory soils and gain depth and intensity with time in the glass.  The perfumed fruit and smoke finish sales on over juicy acids and fine tannins.  Light (12.8% abv) and fresh enough to just enjoy on its own but with enough structure to sing with salmon and fish, mushrooms or white meats from the grill.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2014 Product #30597 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2014 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2014

Patty Green first created the “Reserve” Pinot Noir as an outlet for younger vines from the Estate vineyard and less fine vineyard plots elsewhere.  Over the past 15 years, though, Patty and Jim have continually upgraded the quality of their vineyard sources as the vines on their own Estate site have gotten fully mature.  In 2014, more than 75% of the fruit for this wine came from Patty's Estate Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, Durant Vineyard, and Weber Vineyard in the Dundee Hills - as Jim says, "By almost any definition, these vineyards do not produce entry level wines."  And there's not much "entry level" about this beauty.

The 2014 fruit was so dark and powerful that Patty upped the new oak percentage here a bit to 33%, although most of the wine saw only neutral barrel.  There's plenty of ripeness and richness here, with layers of sweet blackberry, cherry, and black raspberry fruit with a touch of crushed herb and a pretty note of smoky spice underneath.  The wine is so smooth and silky that it's easy to miss the fine, ripe, tannin and mouthwatering acidity that keep this refreshing and promise immediate success at table and 8 or so years of development in cellar.  Just outstanding value and a best buy for the vintage.
