Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Product #27994 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE

Half Bottle!  Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element."Wine Spectator 89 points

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Product #28132 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012

Nothing super fancy here - just a really, really, good Cotes du Rhone at a great value price to enjoy with everything from burgers to lamb chops.  About half Grenache with 30% Syrah and then equal parts Carignan and Cinsault, mostly from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s by former owner Count de Regis de Gatimel.  Most of the luscious, ripe, fruit ferments and ages in tank but part of the Syrah sees barrel to add richness and depth.

A good deal richer and darker than the very popular 2011 edition, the 2012 Segries Cotes du Rhone gushes with aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.  A winner.

"This estate has been on a qualitative hot streak for more than a decade... The 2012 Cotes du Rhone is composed of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Cinsault. It is a fruity, pedal-to-the-metal, peppery, black currant and black cherry-scented and flavored, medium-bodied Cotes du Rhone displaying hints of lavender and garrigue. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

"Full-bodied but approachable, this wine shows a slightly horsey edge on the nose, and pleasingly suede-like flavors and textures underlying the raspberry fruit. It’s a complex mélange that should likely be consumed over the next couple of years. BEST BUY!"Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Ch De Vaugelas Corbieres Le Prieure 2011 Product #28439 (In Stock)
Ch De Vaugelas Corbieres Le Prieure 2011 Ch De Vaugelas Corbieres Le Prieure 2011

This powerful, rich, Corbieres really ought to cost a lot more.  It’s from a high-altitude, rocky, site that receives continuous sunshine and nearly continuous wind.  The Bonfils family farms their vineyard with minimal sprays and no chemical fertilizers, working the soil mechanically and tending and harvesting their vines by hand.  The same painstaking, labor-intensive, and expensive methods carry through to the winery where each varietal is fermented separately and the Syrah and Mourvedre are aged in expensive casks (about one-third new).

The result of all this hard, expensive, work shines through in the glass.  The blend of 35% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 30% Carignan (including some 100 year-old vines), and 5% Mourvèdre delivers bold aromas of black fruits – plum, blackberry, raspberry – with hints of warm stones, bitter chocolate, and a touch of fresh herb.  The flavors are rich, ripe, and mouth coating, with a core of blue/black fruit accented by dusty cocoa, stony earth, and a wonderful licorice-like note that turns floral at the end.  The wine feels plush and velvety in your mouth with enough acidity for freshness and smooth, mellow, tannins providing support to the long black fruit and dark chocolate finish.  A great wine for anything coming off the grill this summer or to simply sip with the sunset.

"This mouthfilling red displays unctuous plum and boysenberry fruit flavors that course along nicely, thanks to lively spice and toasted anise notes, with a strong graphite steak. Fleshy, but excellent acidity is well-embedded on the finish. Drink now through 2015."Wine Spectator 90 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010 Product #27135 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2010

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  Philippe makes a few different tanks of this blend of Grenache, Carignon, Syrah, Counoise and Cinsault, and then importer Olivier Daubresse chooses the very best for us.

This year’s release shows off all the character and quality of the outstanding 2010 Rhone vintage. Intense aromas of inky crushed black raspberry, blackberry, cassis, and black licorice get extra complexity from notes of earthy lavender, violet and chocolate.  The palate is medium-bodied, focused, and fully flavored with layers of squid ink, tangy raspberry, black cherry, and tary, licorice-like, accents. The flavors expand with more blue/black fruit, fresh herb, and cracked black pepper in the back, lingering over fine mineral and sweet tannin on the finish.  This will age beautifully for 5+ years, but I don’t know you’d resist drinking it tonight.

Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003 Product #27985 (In Stock)
Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003 Dom Saint Etienne Cotes Du Rhone Les Albizzias 2003

From the extreme southern end of the Rhone Valley, just on the border of the Gard in Languedoc, this is a powerful blend of Grenache (about 60%) plus Syrah and Carignan.  You'd expect 10 year-old Cotes du Rhone to be fading, but this one is just hitting its stride.  Plenty of super-ripe raspberry and cherry fruit and muscular tannins (as you'd expect from the hot 2003 harvest) but also exotic notes of sandlewood, olive, black pepper, and spice. Still fine acidity here and that plus the very firm, but mouthwateringly ripe, tannins make this a Gigondas for Chateauneuf substitute at table with rich stews, roasts, or cheeses.

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Vllages 2012 Product #27886 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Vllages 2012 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Vllages 2012

Michel Chapoutier's genius shows through clearly in this wildly over-achieving red, a blend of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah from schist sites in rocky Roussillon.  The 2012 is a muscular, concentrated wine that retains just the right amount of lift and freshness.  Deep aromas and flavors of red fruits - cherry, plum, and fresh raspberry tart - gain complexity from notes of smoky earth and bitter chocolate.  Rich, ripe, but perfectly balanced for table. Tangy blueberry/raspberry acidity adds freshness and makes this a great wine to pair with everything from pizza to most anything on the grill.

"Any project Michel Chapoutier is involved with seems to excel, and his Roussillon Bila Haut domaine is no exception. With vineyards around the villages of Latour de France and Lesquerde, this estate releases five reds; the entry level Les Vignes de Bila Haut, which comes from a number of vineyards (and is a screaming value)...The 2012 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut is another smoking effort that will top anyone’s value list. A tank-aged blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, it is medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced, with impressive amounts of blackberry and currant-styled fruit, herbs, pepper and smoked earth aromas and flavors. Showing more minerality with air, it’s a no-brainer purchase and will drink nicely for 5-6 years or more."Wine Advocate 91 points

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012 Product #28373 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets. In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

Clos Du Mont Olivet Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes 2012 Clos Du Mont Olivet Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes 2012

Until this vintage (and in most critics’ reviews), this wine was called “Montueil la Levade Vieilles Vignes,” but new AOC rules made the Sabon family drop the first part of that name.  Regardless, it’s the best vintage I ever recall tasting of this ripe but precise blend of 80% Grenache, plus 10% Carignan and 10% Syrah.

“Bright ruby-red. Spicy cherry and raspberry scents are complicated by fresh flowers and white pepper. Picks up a smoky nuance with air, along with a touch of star anise. In a juicy, precise style, with string finishing cut and silky, harmonious tannins building slowly. Shows the elegant style of this estate to full effect.” International Wine Cellar 90 points

Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009 Product #28104 (In Stock)
Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009 Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009

This is the kind of ripe, hearty, well-structured, red that the rocky vineyards of Rousillon should turn out by the truckload, but somehow rarely do.  Certainly, the grapes that thrive in this dry heat – Grenache, Syrah, and especially Carignon – are not easy to tame, especially in ill-kempt fields full of shaggy vines groaning under the weight of humongous crop loads.

Etienne Montes and his friend/consulting winemaker, the Rhone’s Jean-Luc Colombo, succeed by taking a different path.  Where others use carbonic maceration, new oak barrels, or other tricks to soften Rousillon’s rustic edges, Montes simply works day after day in the vineyards to grow perfectly ripe grapes.  As the harvest nears, he prowls his three plots – including the largest full of 50 year old vines and the next largest planted 70 years ago – tasting, tasting, and tasting grapes.  When he can feel the ripeness in his mouth, the softness of tannin, the maturity of minerality – that’s when Montes starts to make wine.

"Years ago I met Etienne Montes when he first began running his family’s vineyard holdings called La Casenove. Montes gave up a career as a photo journalist to guide this domaine into the upper-echelon of Roussillon producers. The stunning 2009 La Garrigue (40% Carignan, 40% Syrah and 20% Grenache aged 7 months in tank) is a terrific example of how much wine one can buy for under $20 a bottle. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by notes of cassis, blackberries, lavender, licorice, pepper and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and heady, this beauty is capable of drinking well for 5-6 more years. However, as with most of these wines, what’s the point of waiting?”Wine Advocate 92 points

Ch Unang Ventoux 2009 Ch Unang Ventoux 2009

Ventoux is usually a source for ripe, if rustic, reds and fleshy whites.  But, James King's vineyards running up and down steep sloped hillsides and surrounded by forest are a touch cooler than most and give wines of much more freshness, class, and finesse than normally found here.  His tank-raised Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%) and Carignan blend is a beauty.  Raspberry, strawberry, red licorice, and plum notes jump from the glass and coat your palate.  The expansive juicy fruit is complemented by a touch of damp earth and warm stone minerality.  Very pure and refreshing from first glass to last.

Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28440 (In Stock)
Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Priorat Negre 2010

Priorat tends to be a massive, intense, and cellar-worthy wine that needs time in cellar or big food to shine.  So, the 2010 Billo Negre is a very special treat – a supple, open, blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers plenty of classic Priorat character in a “drink me now” style.  Generous aromas of black plums, blackberry, warm stones and a touch of savory herb waft from the glass.  In the mouth the fruit turns more Grenache-like with raspberry and red plum joining the cassis and blue/black fruits and a touch of luscious milk chocolate coming up on the end.  It’s full of flavor and nicely concentrated, but stays wonderfully fresh and pure on the dark berry, chocolate, and warm stone finish. The soft, fine-grained, tannins give this more than enough heft to pair with pork tenderloin or lamb loin chops, but it’s pretty darn tasty all by itself, too.  A stellar value from rocky, dry, remote, Priorat.

Vina Robles Red4 2010 Product #27534 (In Stock)
Vina Robles Red4 2010 Vina Robles Red4 2010

It’s not entirely clear how a couple of guys of Swiss heritage created one of Paso Robles’ most exciting young wine estates.  Swiss native Hans Nef spent a couple of years looking for vineyard in California before deciding to buy an scrubby property dotted with oak trees in the Central Coast’s Paso Robles region in 1996.  Fellow Swiss native Matthias Gubler joined in 1999 and made Vina Robles’s first vintage that year.

Nef and Gubler motto – “European Inspiration – California Character” describes their entry-level Red4 blend perfectly.  As in France’s Rhone Valley, the wine is a blend of distinctive grapes – Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Mourvedre – that complement one another beautifully.

"There’s a robust heartiness to this Rhône-style blend that makes it perfect for drinking on cold nights with spicy barbecue or stew. Mainly Syrah and Petite Sirah, it’s rich in blackberry, bacon and black pepper flavors. Bone dry and moderate in alcohol, it represents great quality for the price."Wine Enthusiast 90 points
