Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013 Product #29224 (In Stock)
Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013 Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013

We don't really know what is in this white Rhone field blend, but it's easy enough to recognize how delicious it is!  Peach and apricot stone fruit take center stage with something aromatic riding on top (Viognier?) and a snap of citrus (Sauvignon?) on the bright finish. At once rich and fresh, it's more delicious and refreshing than most $15 white Rhones and much longer on the lingering finish.

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2014 Product #29263 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2014 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2014

Our first 2014 rose is a beauty!  As soon as you see the Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rosé, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, nicely round but still light and fresh.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2012 Product #27886 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2012 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2012

Michel Chapoutier's genius shows through clearly in this wildly over-achieving red, a blend of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah from schist sites in rocky Roussillon.  The 2012 is a muscular, concentrated wine that retains just the right amount of lift and freshness.  Deep aromas and flavors of red fruits - cherry, plum, and fresh raspberry tart - gain complexity from notes of smoky earth and bitter chocolate.  Rich, ripe, but perfectly balanced for table. Tangy blueberry/raspberry acidity adds freshness and makes this a great wine to pair with everything from pizza to most anything on the grill.

"Any project Michel Chapoutier is involved with seems to excel, and his Roussillon Bila Haut domaine is no exception. With vineyards around the villages of Latour de France and Lesquerde, this estate releases five reds; the entry level Les Vignes de Bila Haut, which comes from a number of vineyards (and is a screaming value)...The 2012 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut is another smoking effort that will top anyone’s value list. A tank-aged blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, it is medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced, with impressive amounts of blackberry and currant-styled fruit, herbs, pepper and smoked earth aromas and flavors. Showing more minerality with air, it’s a no-brainer purchase and will drink nicely for 5-6 years or more."Wine Advocate 91 points

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012 Product #28373 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2012

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets. In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Product #28936 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expesive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality. In the few months since this lovely white Rhone sold out, it's gotten even prettier on the nose, with generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clemintine and crushed chalk.

Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses or baked fish, or even with savory turkey and stuffing!  And, it will age beautifully (if you can keep your hands off it long enough)!

Ch Unang Ventoux 2009 Product #28181 (In Stock)
Ch Unang Ventoux 2009 Ch Unang Ventoux 2009

Ventoux is usually a source for ripe, if rustic, reds and fleshy whites.  But, James King's vineyards running up and down steep sloped hillsides and surrounded by forest are a touch cooler than most and give wines of much more freshness, class, and finesse than normally found here.  His tank-raised Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%) and Carignan blend is a beauty.  Raspberry, strawberry, red licorice, and plum notes jump from the glass and coat your palate.  The expansive juicy fruit is complemented by a touch of damp earth and warm stone minerality.  Very pure and refreshing from first glass to last.

Dom De La Janasse Cotes Du Rhone Reserve 2011 Dom De La Janasse Cotes Du Rhone Reserve 2011

There’s a lot going on in this complex  Cotes du Rhone, with a texture and shapely feel that you  normally have to pay much more for.  From one of Chateauneuf’s – if not France’s – very best estates, this is ready to drink but will improve for 2-3 years more.

“55% grenache, 25% syrah, 10% carignan, 5% cinsault and 5% mourvedre. Deep ruby. Fresh dark berries and lavender on the spice-accented nose and in the mouth. Fleshy and open-knit, with slow-building sweetness and smooth tannins shaping the finish. Quite suave and ready to drink.”International Wine Cellar 89 points

Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28440 (In Stock)
Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Priorat Negre 2010

Priorat tends to be a massive, intense, and cellar-worthy wine that needs time in cellar or big food to shine.  So, the 2010 Billo Negre is a very special treat – a supple, open, blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers plenty of classic Priorat character in a “drink me now” style.  Generous aromas of black plums, blackberry, warm stones and a touch of savory herb waft from the glass.  In the mouth the fruit turns more Grenache-like with raspberry and red plum joining the cassis and blue/black fruits and a touch of luscious milk chocolate coming up on the end.  It’s full of flavor and nicely concentrated, but stays wonderfully fresh and pure on the dark berry, chocolate, and warm stone finish. The soft, fine-grained, tannins give this more than enough heft to pair with pork tenderloin or lamb loin chops, but it’s pretty darn tasty all by itself, too.  A stellar value from rocky, dry, remote, Priorat.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Product #28306 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009

Simply the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!   A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) all aged in neutral oak perfectly express the terroir of Philippe’s rocky vineyards and the vintage’s warmth and ripeness. Big aromas of black raspberry, licorice, fresh earth, and roasted meat carry through on the mouth coating palate where hints of lavender and violet emerge.  The focused, generous, flavors push through the explosive finish where firm tannins provide support and raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, seared beef, and licorice flavors go on and on.

With age this  just gets better and better - a magnum of 2005 Philippe served us last year resembled and was flat out better than the 2005 Beaucastel on the same table.  Grab a case or so of regular bottles, but treat yourself to a few magnums, too.  An utterly magnificent bottle of gutsy Rhone red now and for 15+ years to come.

Think of this as "baby Chateaneuf du Pape" even though it's labeled as just Vin de France.  Jean-Marie Royer blends lots that didn't quite fit into previous year's CdP blends something wonderfully ripe, gutsy, complex and great value!  It's bursting with blackberry, raspberry, black olive and a generous dose of garrigue showcased in a silky-textured wine that finishes long, juicy, and fresh. Philipe Cambie consults here, and you'll see his influence on the fine, smooth, tannins that provide ample support but won't get in the way of enjoying this with a chill if you like.  A delicious bargain.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2013 Product #29135 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2013 Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2013

Bila Haut is Michel Chapoutier’s outpost in “the Sud,” and a great example of what a top Hermitage grower/winemaker can do in Roussillon’s rocky, barren, wind-swept, soils. "Occultum Lapidem" is Latin for "hidden stone,” and you’ll certainly find plenty of rocky, chalky, minerality at this wine’s core.  But, the stones are cloaked by instense fruit flavors and suggestions of savory roasted meat that will come forward with time.

“A step up and an incredible effort, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Occultum Lapidem is made from a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan that comes from schist and chalky soils. A serious, classically styled effort, it offers awesome aromas and flavors (blackberry, mineral and licorice), full-bodied richness and fabulous concentration that never comes across as heavy or cumbersome. Showing additional minerality and definition with time in the glass, this beauty will have 10-15 years of longevity and should not be missed. Drink 2014 – 2029.” Wine Advocate 94-97 points

Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28441 (In Stock)
Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010

An outstanding example of what happens when a talented young winemaker - Blai Ferré i Just – works fruit from old vines – 80+ year-old Garnacha Peluda – in a fine vintage like 2010.  First, the utterly compelling aromas:  savory soy and herb-rubbed roasted meat notes intermingle with scents of crushed black raspberry, black plum, spice, vanilla, and warm stones.  In the mouth, there’s an exciting interplay between the wine’s size and power vs. it’s silky texture and almost Pinot-like purity and poise.  The perfectly ripe “Hairy Grenache” and minerally Carignan (20%) combine to deliver a uniquely Priorat flavor profile of inky blackberry, boysenberry, lavender, soy, and roasted meats with a lovely note of sweet spice and crushed slate minerality.   The dusty mineral that peaked out of the aromas and flavors comes to the fore with a bang on the finish where crushed hot slate and firm, precise, tannin complement black raspberry, ink, and spice flavors that sail on and on and on.  A glorious, perfectly poised, Priorat to drink now with air and roasted meats or to cellar for 10-15 years.  This is the real deal, folks – don’t miss it!
