Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2014 Product #29927 (In Stock)
Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2014 Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2014

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

Col des Vents Corbieres isn’t just a delicious red for easy drinking and robust winter foods – it’s also a very, very, smart buy.  At just 13.5% alcohol, it’s a gutsy red you can have more than one glass of and still hold up your end of dinner conversation.  And, at these case prices – the lowest we can find in the world and a whopping $5 or 38% less than the big box store down the street charges – you’ll know you’re enjoying world class value too!

What happens when you discover a lost plot of 40 year-old Carignan vines and then treat them with the respect and techniques normally reserved for Burgundy?  Deliciousness! Bright, fresh, aromas and flavors of crunchy raspberry, strawberry, redcurrant and more take center stage with highlights of spice and black pepper adding interest.  Dusty tannins don't get in the way of the ripe fruit flavors that pump out along the juicy, mouthwatering, finish.  "Forbidden Fruit?"  Not at all!

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2011 375ml Product #29192 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2011 375ml Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2011 375ml

Another fine vintage from the Rhone masters at Guigal.

"Smoky cherry and blueberry aromas display very good clarity and a touch of cracked pepper. Showing its Syrah component, with sappy black and blue fruit flavors sharpened by a spicy nuance. A sexy floral note comes up on a gently tannic finish that lingers with very good persistence. As usual, this wine punches well above its category and should reward at least another four or five years of patience."  Vinous 90 points

"The value-priced 2011 Cotes du Rhone (49% Syrah, 46% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre aged 24 months in foudre) over-delivers and exhibits textbook black cherry, smoked earth, olive, underbrush and licorice, as well as a clean, balanced, medium to full-bodied profile on the palate. Rock solid in the vintage and surpassing any number of more expensive releases, it should be consumed over the coming 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

The staff is divided on the bottle (elegant or funky?), but we all agree that wine is delicious!  It's a blend of Syrah, Cinsault, and Grenache with a dash of  Rolle (Vermentino) for extra lift and character. Dry and fresh, this serves up classic notes of strawberry, tangy raspberry and crushed herb and finishes clean and fresh.  Punches well above it's modest price!

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Blanc 2013 Product #29312 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Blanc 2013 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Blanc 2013

About 50% Grenache Blanc provides the base for Guilhem Blanc.  While it doesn’t have a lot of flavor on its own, white Grenache provides body and richness to the blend and a hint of something nutty or waxy on the nose and palate, too. Add in 25% Sauvignon Blanc, grown in cooler sites and harvested fairly early to give the wine a dose of fresh citrus fruit, aromas of fresh herb, and – in this warm climate – a touch of ripe peach and apricot.  Then – in part to help save old vines that would otherwise be ripped up – finish with a dose of 25% Terret Blanc.  One of the oldest grape varieties in Languedoc (and, until the 1960s, the most widely planted), Terret has the great virtue of retaining high acidty and lower alcohol even in the hot Sud sun.  Here it gives the wine a lift of freshness and lemony acidity plus a subtle note of fresh flowers.  The final blend is medium-bodied, mouthwatering, and full of peach, apricot, lemon, and floral aromas and flavors.  Delicious stuff and a great match for baked fish or soft cheese.

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

One of the Rhone's most consistent values, Segries Cotes du Rhone is a shining success in 2014.  Made from declassified Lirac grapes, it's a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% each Cinsault and Carignan done almost entirely in tank.  Aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.

Mas De La Barben l'Improviste Rouge 2010 Mas De La Barben l'Improviste Rouge 2010

Lots of delicious wines in the Rhone section of the store, but few more pure, fine, fun to drink that this.  The classic Sud Grenache (60%)/Syrah (30%) blend gets a snap of spice from 10% Cinsault here, but no oak.  Aromas of warm spiced fruit waft from the glass with lots of stone and gravel lurking underneath. In your mouth, a delicious burst of fresh, ripe, cherry/berry fruit doesn't obscure the Languedoc's typical sweet spice, garrigue, and warm stone flavors. Finishes fresh and firm, with fine tannins and mouthwatering acids that pull you back for another sip.  Excellent value here.

Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012 Product #30369 (In Stock)
Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012 Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012

Damien Rozier crafts this robust, gutsy, red from about 80% Grenache and dollops of Syrah and Mourvedre grown on the hot, Mistral-swept, stretch of old Rhone riverbed called Plan de Dieu.  To the east, Gigondas and Vacqueyras perch along the hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail; to the south, the small hill holding “the Pope’s New Castle” rises and looks down on the sandier soils of Chateauneuf du Pape.  Here, though, the ancient Rhone River’s smoothed pebbles are salted through a hard, dense, clay that runs down 10 meters to rock (and water) below.

The 20-40 year-old vines have to work hard here, and so does Damien, farming without use of chemical herbicides or pesticides, working his vines by hand, and sorting out all but the most perfect fruit and aging his wine in French oak for a year.  It sure tastes like all that hard work was worth it!  The wine serves up big, boisterous, aromas of crushed blackberries, black cherry conserves, and super-ripe raspberry with earthy accents of black licorice, hot stone, spice and garrigue.  On the palate, the flavors stay dark, rich, and ripe but a big dose of fresh blackberry juice provides lift and a welcome jolt of tanginess.  The fine-grained tannins give this a just right amount of structure, enough to make this a fantastic match for burgers, pizza, or gilled lamb but not too much to interfere with happy solo sipping.  A straight-ahead, juicy, fun to drink, food-friendly, Cotes du Rhone at a fine, imported just for us, price.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #29763 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  This is the second straight vintage Philippe made this wine as a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.

Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2014 Product #29858 (In Stock)
Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2014 Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2014

Organic Grapes!  Provence is more famous for it's red and pink wines, but with great care and skill, it's possible to create compelling whites here, too.  This comes from certified organic vines of snappy fresh Rolle (aka Vermentino in Italy) and rich, luxurious, Roussanne grown in a hidden vineyard shaped like the tongue of a dog.  The sandy soils let both varietals retain their freshness while Provencal warmth, sunshine, and the blustery Mistrial wind ensure plenty of ripeness.

Aromas of crushed yellow peach, tangerine, and crushed stone lead to a creamy, but bone dry, mouthful of peach, peach skin, lime, salty stone and tangy citrus flavors.  Provencal herb notes come up on the back and the stone, citrus, and mineral flavors linger on and on through the long, saline, finish.  A lovely wine for salads and seafood or just to sip.

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 2014 Product #30199 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 2014 Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 2014

Jean-Marie Royer, working with friend and consultant Philipe Cambie, makes what Vinous calls "elegant--dare I say Burgundian" Chateauneuf du Pape, wines of great perfume, grace, and elegance.  This is Royer's everyday wine, a blend of fruit from vineyards just outside of Chateauneuf and a site inside the Chateauneuf boundary that has a bit too much clay to qualify as Chateauneuf itself.  He should really be allowed to call this a Cotes du Rhone, but the rules say he must label it as "Vin de Table" and not make any note on where it's from or vintage (although, as you can see when you look at the label, he cheats a bit there).

In the 2014 vintage, this blend of tank-raised Grenache with Carignane, Syrah, and Alicante is utterly charming.  Definitely not as big and burley as the 2013 edition, this year's release is still very flavorful and aromatic and serves up plenty of dark berry, crushed herb, and spice.  As Wine Spectator said of the 2011, "It’s silky, with pretty pepper, red cherry and lavender notes and a lightly dusty finish, offering a textbook Provençal profile with a gentle, modest feel."  Outstanding value, but limited.

Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Product #30385 (In Stock)
Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010

Young Nicolas Souchon launched this tiny side-project while working as cellar master at Chateauneuf du Pape’s Clos St. Jean.  With advice from super-consultant Philippe Cambie, he crafted 400 cases of this powerful red from his family’s 11 hectares of vineyard in the Languedoc, about 45 miles west of Avignon.  It’s a traditional blend of more-or-less equal parts Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan, with the Syrah and Carignan aged in used barrel and the Grenache in tank.  Full, fleshy, and forward, you'll enjoy this for the rich black raspberry fruit and accents of bitter chocolate, herb, and black olive.  It's 100% ready to drink now - and wants drinking over the next 24 months - with lamb, pork, or earthy bean stews.  A steal, but limited.

“Bright violet. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by floral and cola qualities. Supple cassis and blueberry flavors show very good energy, gaining sweetness and depth with air. Finishes with noteworthy power, a suave note of black raspberry and slow-building tannins.” Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

“Mas des Volques 2010 Vin de Pays Volcae X, a 400-case sleeper of the vintage, is loaded with fruit. It offers sumptuous deep raspberry and black currant aromas and flavors, medium to full body, silky tannins and abundant hedonistic pleasure. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.”Wine Advocate 87-90 points

Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013 Product #30209 (In Stock)
Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013 Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013

Young Pablo Hocht learned to make wine as part of his day job at leading Gigondas estate Dom Saint Cosme, and is now venturing out on his own - but in a very small way.  He has just 5 acres of old vines - 60+ years for his Grenache - on the western side of the Ouveze River in Sablet.  Because he has only a few rows of Mourvedre, and AOC rules require Sablet to be at least 20% something other than Grenache (and Pablo prefers 40%), he uses the best Grenache for this wine and bottles the rest as Cotes du Rhone.

The 2012 edition of this wine earned 90 points from Wine Advocate, but the not-yet-reviewed 2013 is clearly better.  It’s a blend of 60% old-vine Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, all organic/biodamically farmed on the rock-covered sand and clay soils of Sablet, just under the hill of Gigondas.  The aromas here are just exactly why we love the big, gutsy, wines of the Southern Rhone.  Powerful scents of crushed black cherry, raspberry liquor, black licorice, olive, and a hint of lavender burst from the glass.  On the palate, the generous, rich, dark fruit flavors gain complexity from notes of fresh earth, warm stones, and dried thyme.  Mouthfilling and long on the palate, the finish remains surprisingly refreshing and bright as tangy raspberry, licorice, and herb flavors linger over mineral dust and fine-grained tannins.  Just 133 cases made (in Pablo’s parents’ basement), and delicious now for stews and autumnal feasts with at least 4-6 years of cellar potential, too.
