Penya Cotes Catalanes Rouge 2015 Product #30931 (In Stock)
Penya Cotes Catalanes Rouge 2015 Penya Cotes Catalanes Rouge 2015

As soon as we tasted the 2015 Penya, we knew:  this is going to be a “no-brainer” favorite value red of the year! It’s loaded with generous red and blue fruit – think raspberry, blueberry, blackberry – plus a nice whiff of sweet berry blossom and violet.  There’s enough heft and tannin here to give the wine a satisfying texture and make it a great companion for any summer food. Or give it a light chill and you’ll love it’s thirst-quenching joy as you twist-off the top and pour it on the deck while the grill heats up and the sun goes down.

“The vibrant purple-colored 2015 IGP Cotes Catalanes was bottled in January and raised all in concrete tanks. Made from 52% Grenache, 36% Carignan and 12% Syrah, it offers jammy, forward notes of blackberries, raspberries and flowers in a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, fruity personality. It’s a terrific value and geared for near-term drinking.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2015 Charles Thomas Cotes Du Rhone 2015

In 2015, this happy, eager to please, Cotes du Rhone opens up with fresh aromas of blackberry, currant, cracked pepper, lavender and a hint of smoke.  On the palate it’s medium-bodied and pumps out flavors of just-picked raspberry and blackberry, cranberry, and a touch of crumbled dry herb.  It finishes with a big burst of tangy raspberry, black pepper, and red plum, mouthwatering and thirst quenching and with just enough dusty tannin to stand up to pizza, nachos, sausages, fried chicken, or the casual fun-food of your choice!

“Checking in as a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone is a floral, red and black berry, spice and sappy herb-scented effort that has medium-bodied richness, juicy acidity and a charming, quaffable style. Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2014 Product #29927 (In Stock)
Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2014 Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2014

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

Col des Vents Corbieres isn’t just a delicious red for easy drinking and robust winter foods – it’s also a very, very, smart buy.  At just 13.5% alcohol, it’s a gutsy red you can have more than one glass of and still hold up your end of dinner conversation.  And, at these case prices – the lowest we can find in the world and a whopping $5 or 38% less than the big box store down the street charges – you’ll know you’re enjoying world class value too!

Laurent Miquel Syrah Grenache 2015 Laurent Miquel Syrah Grenache 2015

Exactly the kind of fun, friendly, great value wine that France's  Languedoc region should pump out by the boatload - but somehow doesn't.  This is a great drink, blending 75% Syrah for richness with 25% Grenache for red fruit and lift.  Plenty of dark fruit - plum, blackberry, black raspberry - on the nose and palate with accents of creamy chocolate, warm earth, and spice.  Finishes big and rich with just a dusting of tannins for support.  A fine, delicious, value.

Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Product #31175 (In Stock)
Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015

"Tire Bouchon" is the French phrase for a corkscrew, but the literal translation is better:  Cork Puller.  And you're going to pull a lot of these corks this fall and winter! This is a throw-back (in terms of both time and how you'll drink it!) red made from Grenache, Syrah, and 10% old-timey Aramon and Oeillade Noire.  While it's all grown in Adrien Roustan's Vacqueyras vineyards, the old grapes aren't allowed, so it's bottled as Vin de France.  The winemaking is pretty old school, too.  All the grapes are tossed into the vat together, covered with some dry ice, and allowed to start fermentation as they will.  10 days in the fermenter, a few months resting in tank, and then ready for you to slurp!

It's friendly from the first sniff, with open, generous, aromas of crushed black raspberries, sweet cherry, violets, and a hint of ripe black olive.  Take a sip and let the party begin!  This wine just oozes sweet, fresh, very ripe red and black cherry/berry fruit with a touch of cracked pepper, lavender and rich loamy earth for complexity.  Juicy and mouthwatering, but not at all tart, with a bit of Black Forest cake (chocolate and sweet cherry) coming up on the supple, lingering, finish.  Sure, it's going to go swell with all kinds of casual foods - burgers, hot dogs, pizza, stews - but it will shine most brightly when shared with (soon to be very happy) friends!

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2014 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2014

These guys just never miss! No oak, big flavors, great value.

"A terrific value that’s close to an even split of Grenache and Syrah (there’s 10% Carignan), from a mix of terroirs in the Agly Valley, the 2014 Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages les Vignes de Bila Haut was completely destemmed and spent eight months in a mix of concrete tanks and stainless steel prior to bottling. A fabulous value that will be hard to beat as a mid-week drinker, it offers lots of juicy berry fruit, violets, peppery herbs and damp earth characteristics in a medium-bodied, bright, fresh and elegant package. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 2-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014 Product #30930 (In Stock)
Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014 Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014

Corbieres, in the heart of the Languedoc, is famous for turning rich, herb-scented, wines with plenty of heft and fruit - if sometimes a bit too much earthiness and chew.  Here, the team from Ch St Martin de la Garrigue crafts a juicy red that offers up all the good parts of Corbieres with none of the flaws.  It's a blend of Grenache (40%), Syrah (35%) and Cargignan (25%) picked nice and ripe - but not overripe! - and made carefully in tank.

You'll find plenty of the scents and flavors that make Corbieres so much fun - dark raspberry, ripe blueberry, and a big handful of fresh pine and herb - along with a satisfying smoky/meaty depth.  Carignan's bright blueberry fruit keeps things fresh and adds a nice touch of minerality to the fruit and herb-laced finish.  Fine, easy-drinking, fun at your next cookout or casual meal.

Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012 Product #30949 (In Stock)
Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012 Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012

IT'S BACK!!!  Xavier Vignon consults with vine growers and winemakers at some of the Rhone’s most famous estates, and he takes just a bit of his fee in the form of grapes to make outstanding wines like this one.  Grenache from 80+ year-old vines, nicely rich Syrah, and a remarkable 25% Mourvedre – very generous for a wine at this price level – are all harvested ripe, fermented cool, and aged in concrete tank to retain 100% authentic Rhone character.

"The 2012 Côtes du Rhône is another beauty by this team. Licorice, roasted herbs, pepper and plenty of sweet fruit come together in this medium to full-bodied, layered, and textured effort. Made from 60% Grenache, and Mourvedre and Syrah that saw mostly concrete tank, it’s a smoking Côtes du Rhône (and a fabulous value) to drink over the coming 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Ch Vignelaure Rose Coteaux d'Aix En Provence 2015 Product #31145 (In Stock)
Ch Vignelaure Rose Coteaux d'Aix En Provence 2015 Ch Vignelaure Rose Coteaux d'Aix En Provence 2015

A blend of 40% Grenache - bled from red wine tanks - plus 30% direct press Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The texture is the real story here, round and plush and mouthfilling but still light and fresh.  You'll love it right now as a late-Summer refresher, but hold on to some for end-of-year feasts and even for Summer 2017 - because this will just get better with time!

"Pale orange. Aromas of orange zest, strawberry and white flowers show very good clarity and a subtle mineral element. Juicy and focused, offering ripe strawberry and tangerine flavors that put on weight with aeration. Fleshy, focused and dry on the penetrating finish, which shows good, nervy cut and minerally persistence."  Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

"Editors Choice! Coming from a remote estate on the edge of the Lubéron mountains in the north of Provence, this wine is impressively rich. It gains great concentration and structure from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the blend. Full of ripe red fruits, it is dense at the end."Wine Enthusiast 93 points

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Product #31080 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets.

In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2014 Product #29858 (In Stock)
Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2014 Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2014

Organic Grapes!  Provence is more famous for it's red and pink wines, but with great care and skill, it's possible to create compelling whites here, too.  This comes from certified organic vines of snappy fresh Rolle (aka Vermentino in Italy) and rich, luxurious, Roussanne grown in a hidden vineyard shaped like the tongue of a dog.  The sandy soils let both varietals retain their freshness while Provencal warmth, sunshine, and the blustery Mistrial wind ensure plenty of ripeness.

Aromas of crushed yellow peach, tangerine, and crushed stone lead to a creamy, but bone dry, mouthful of peach, peach skin, lime, salty stone and tangy citrus flavors.  Provencal herb notes come up on the back and the stone, citrus, and mineral flavors linger on and on through the long, saline, finish.  A lovely wine for salads and seafood or just to sip.

Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013 Product #30281 (In Stock)
Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013 Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013

From a terrific Rhone vineyard unjustly left out of the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, this is a wine Robert Parker has called "a baby Chateauneuf du Pape," "a poor person's Chateauneuf," and "a serious effort that could easily be mistaken for a Chateauneuf du Pape." In 2013, it delivers loads of rich, ripe, Rhonish fruit - kirsch, cherry, raspberry - along with classic accents of lavender, thyme, black pepper, and black olive. Unlike most Chateauneuf, it's delicious right now and simply a steal at this price.

"The 2013 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins continues to impress, and for a difficult vintage, it has tons of charm. Offering lots of earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, underbrush and loam earth, it’s medium-bodied, nicely textured and has solid length. Made from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that had the Grenache aged in stainless steel and the Syrah and Mourvedre in barrel, drink it anytime over the coming 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Product #30385 (In Stock)
Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010

Young Nicolas Souchon launched this tiny side-project while working as cellar master at Chateauneuf du Pape’s Clos St. Jean.  With advice from super-consultant Philippe Cambie, he crafted 400 cases of this powerful red from his family’s 11 hectares of vineyard in the Languedoc, about 45 miles west of Avignon.  It’s a traditional blend of more-or-less equal parts Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan, with the Syrah and Carignan aged in used barrel and the Grenache in tank.  Full, fleshy, and forward, you'll enjoy this for the rich black raspberry fruit and accents of bitter chocolate, herb, and black olive.  It's 100% ready to drink now - and wants drinking over the next 24 months - with lamb, pork, or earthy bean stews.  A steal, but limited.

“Bright violet. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by floral and cola qualities. Supple cassis and blueberry flavors show very good energy, gaining sweetness and depth with air. Finishes with noteworthy power, a suave note of black raspberry and slow-building tannins.” Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

“Mas des Volques 2010 Vin de Pays Volcae X, a 400-case sleeper of the vintage, is loaded with fruit. It offers sumptuous deep raspberry and black currant aromas and flavors, medium to full body, silky tannins and abundant hedonistic pleasure. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.”Wine Advocate 87-90 points

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Product #31415 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme

Jean-Marie Royer’s everyday wine is a blend of fruit from vineyards just outside of Chateauneuf and a site inside the Chateauneuf boundary that has a bit too much clay to qualify for the Chateauneuf AOC.  He should really be allowed to call this a Cotes du Rhone, but the rules say he must label it as "Vin de Table" and not make any note on where it's from or vintage (although, as you can see, he cheats a bit there).

In France’s great, great, 2015 vintage, La Petit Roy isn’t very “Petit.”  In fact, it’s a pretty big and burly thing with deep base notes of black raspberry and roasted strawberry plus lively accents of crushed herb, lavender, black pepper and spice.  The grapes are mainly Grenache with seasoning splashes of Syrah (for depth) and Alicante (for herbal complexity and color).  Very Provençal and pretty enough to serve at a party but with more than enough heft to pair with leftover leg of lamb.  Fantastic value for a “baby CdP.”

Possibly the sunniest vineyard in France, La Clape sits right on the Mediterranean coast in deepest Languedoc.  You'll smell and taste the region's sun-baked stones and scrubby herb and pine here but also oodles of earthy strawberry and cherry red fruit.  A floral note weaves in and out even as the wine gets meatier and more savory with air. Finishes firm and earthy with plenty of garrigue.  Fun!

Dom Philippe Plantevin CdR Villages La Daurelle 2011 Dom Philippe Plantevin CdR Villages La Daurelle 2011

Probably the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!   A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) aged in tank (2/3) and neutral oak (1/3) that perfectly express the terroir of Philippe’s rocky vineyards and 2011’s blend of purity and ripeness. Big aromas of black raspberry, licorice, fresh earth, and roasted meat carry through on the mouth coating palate where hints of lavender and violet emerge.  The focused, generous, flavors push through the explosive finish where firm tannins provide support and raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, seared beef, and licorice flavors go on and on.

La Daurelle has been a staff and customer favorite for years, and the 2011 edition is even more captivating than usual.  It’s perfect to enjoy right now with grilled or roasted meats or most any dish showing a touch of cumin or North African spice, make sure to put some away for later, too.  Expect this to continue to improve for another decade and to give pleasure long after that.  Simply stellar wine and value here.
