Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2013 Product #29248 (In Stock)
Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2013 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2013

A fun, flavorful, and fine value Tuscan Sangiovese made by Paolo Masi from grapes grown near Rufina in Chianti. Ripe aromas and flavors of cherry and red berry start off bright and fresh and then get darker with a little air. The juicy acidity and light tannins make this easy to just sip, but give it enough substance to enjoy with pizza, burgers, or a big bowl of pasta and red sauce.  There's enough going on here to hold your interest through a few glasses and - especially at this price - tempt you to open a second bottle as the night goes on.  Fun stuff!

Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011 Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011

Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this:  “This is just stupid delicious.”  A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries.  In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak.  Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end.  Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill.  Like I said:  Stupid delicious.

Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010 Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010

This Sangiovese from the fairly new Tuscan DOC of Montecucco waaay over-delivers for it's modest price. Lush aromas of dark cherry fruit and leather carry through to the sexy palate, which bursts with tangy ripe fruit dusted with fresh herb. There's lots of richness here, but also great energy from beginning to end where a hit of bitter chocolate and herb linger nicely.  A whole lot of wine for the money.

Simple?  Yes - Simply delicious! Pizza/pasta Chianti at a fine value price.

"Renzo Masi is a second brand owned by Fattoria di Basciano's Masi family. The emphasis here is on value wines with vibrant territorial personality. The family has been making wine for three generations. The 2011 Chianti Riserva opens to a plush, dark color and midnight black consistency. The wine shows simple lines without too much in terms of complexity or underlying dimension. It takes a soft and easy approach with no blemishes or extraordinary points of excitement. Ripe cherry fruit and soft tannins make an appropriate curtain call."Wine Advocate 87 points

Organic Grapes.  Here's a gutsy, ripe, blend of Sangiovese with just a tiny bit of Canaiolo Nero) that delivers romas and flavors of black cherry fruit with accents of violets, licorice, and a hint of spice. There's just the right amount of Chianti heft and tannic power on the finish, but a nice burst of tangy cherry acidity keeps the dark fruit and floral flavors fresh and focused across the long finish.  A great steak Chianti and ready to drink now.

Le Pupille Morellino Di Scansano 2012 Le Pupille Morellino Di Scansano 2012

From Tuscany's coastal regions, Pupille's mainly Sangiovese (just a dash of Alicante and Malvasia Nera for complexity) is always wonderfully perfumed, but has an extra dose of ripe fruit this year.

"This is much fruitier than past vintages yet super fresh and clean. It's a wine that you want to drink all yourself. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a long, bright finish. Very perfumed. Drink now. Excellent value."   James Suckling 91 points

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2013 Product #29516 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2013 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2013

The hallmark of Andrea Cortonesi’s Voliero wines from Montalcino’s North is floral perfume, and there's plenty of that on display in this lovely, elegant, Rosso di Montalcino.  Crushed berries, violets, spice and fresh leather all waft from the glass with the fruit getting darker and more prominent with air.  In the mouth, there's a big burst of black cherry and red plum fruit lifted by tangy acidity and framed by notes of sweet spice, fresh earth, and crushed violets. On the finish, the sweet fruit keeps on singing out over very fine, ripe, tannins and tangy cherry juice acidity.  Although the aromas and flavors are very Montalcino, the texture and freshness resemble a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and this will work like that with salmon, grilled beef, and mushroom dishes.

“The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino is fresh, perfumed and vibrant, with lovely overall purity. Drink this mid-weight, pliant Rosso over the next few years. This high-altitude site in Castelnuovo yields a Rosso with terrific balance. Sweet floral and spiced notes ring out on the finish.”  Antonio Galloni 89 points

“Andrea Cortonesi's 2013 Rosso di Montalcino Voliero is a gorgeous expression that I happily recommend to anyone looking for a solid Rosso to pair with their steak dinner. The wine shows a great sense of restraint, with richness and opulence that never goes over the top. You'll also love the way it feels on the palate. It caresses the senses with soft layers of cherry and blackberry fruit. At the end, you get a playful touch of oak spice - with toasted almond and vanilla - that comes thanks to 10 months in barrel. This is the ultimate food-friendly Rosso.”Wine Advocate 91 points

Carpineta Fontalpino Chianti Classico 2012 Product #29226 (In Stock)
Carpineta Fontalpino Chianti Classico 2012 Carpineta Fontalpino Chianti Classico 2012

Gioia Cresti fashioned her 2012 Chianti Classico from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown  at 350 meters elevation in Castelnuovo Berardenga.  Fermentation in tank followed by 12 months aging in neutral barrel lets the fruit shine through while mellowing Sangiovese’s often hard tannins.  You’ll find bold and classic Chianti aromas of dark black cherry, leather, dried tobacco, crushed violet and more jump out of the glass at first pour and get deeper and more ripe with air.  Plenty of the dark, rich, fruit you expect from this warm 2012 vintage, but also some of the clarity and juicy acids that make Fontalpino so easy to drink and pair with food.  The tannins are fine and ripe and the juicy cherry/berry and violet notes linger nicely.  Very classic Chianti indeed.

"Serious density and freshness for the vintage with dark-berry and fresh-mushroom character. Full body with fine tannins and a crisp finish. Drink now." James Suckling 90 points

"Bright, saturated red. Aromas of red cherry, dark berries, tobacco and violet, lifted by a whiff of minty minerals. Bright, juicy and sappy, showing very good density to the vibrant flavors of redcurrant, tobacco and gunflint. This solidly structured, mineral-bright Chianti Classico finishes with a firm tannic spine and just screams sangiovese. I was pleasantly surprised by this estate's performance this year, and I'll be following the wines more closely in the years to come."  Vinous 90 points

"Rich and elegant, with cherry, strawberry, tobacco and tea flavors. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins defining the finish. Best from 2016 through 2022. 4,200 cases made." Wine Spectator 90 points

Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 375ml Product #29222 (In Stock)
Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 375ml Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 375ml

This old Montalcino estate, founded by Francesco Ciacci in 1877, has been a Brunello standard-bearer for decades now.  Giuseppe Bianchini (the estate manager who inherited the property when the last Ciacci died in 1985) and his children Paolo and Lucia are famed for producing elegant, aromatic, wines that still pack plenty of Brunello power and punch.  The family introduced this wine, made from the estate's younger vines, in 2003 and it's grown into one of the most highly-rated, best value, wines of the region.  It always drinks well very young (although an hour of air won't hurt), and is best enjoyed in the first 15 years from the vintage.

“Very perfumed with flower, truffle, light wet earth and cherry character. Full body and full integrated ripe tannins and caresses your palate. Very fine and pretty. Slight soya undertone. Succulent and enticing. You want to drink this. Better in 2016.”  James Suckling 94 points

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino represents a return to the traditional values of Montalcino. The bouquet is buoyant and bright with lingering tones of smoke, ash, balsam herb, licorice and soy sauce. Those kinds of aromas make Brunello such a wonderful wine and thankfully you get them in abundance here. Dry mineral and brimstone also give the wine a sense of focus, sharpness and cleanliness that is very appealing. The close is long, fine and polished. I look forward to retasting this bottle five years from now."Wine Advocate 94+ points

Uccelliera Rosso Di Montalcino 2013 Product #29517 (In Stock)
Uccelliera Rosso Di Montalcino 2013 Uccelliera Rosso Di Montalcino 2013

Antonio Galloni rates this as the best Rosso di Montalcino ever from Uccelliera - above even the brilliant 2007 - and we have to agree.  Give it a swirl and it smells like very good Brunello, with intense scents of dark cherry, leather, smoke and dark flowers.  On the palate, it's a terrific marriage of the best of Rosso - medium bodied, transparent, fresh - with gusty Brunello flavors of ripe fruit, leather, spice, flowers and more. The wine finishes with muscular (but very ripe) tannins and a lash of juicy acidity as the fruit keeps on flowing. Tempting with a decant and food right now, but this is a Rosso that will really blossom with a year or two in cellar and drink through the early 2020s easily.

“The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino captures the essence of this site rich in clay and limestone, where the wines are ample and broad in style. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, lavender and spice notes blossom in a resonant Rosso loaded with personality. Readers who want to explore the Uccelliera wines should start here; this is a fabulous showing from Andrea Cortonesi.”  Antonio Galloni 91 points

“The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino opens to easy fruit intensity and sharp mineral tones of brimstone and pencil shaving that you note immediately. Those dusty tones slowly turn to bright cherry, licorice and cola. Rosso di Montalcino is one of Italy's most food-friendly wines (think pasta, grilled sausage and lasagna) and this wine is a good example of why. Fresh acidity and easy tannins offer a smooth and informal drinking experience.”Wine Advocate 88 points

Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino Tirso 2012 Product #29553 (In Stock)
Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino Tirso 2012 Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino Tirso 2012

Opens with classic Sangiovese aromas of dark cherry, strawberry, leather and violets.  You can taste the warmth of the vintage on the palate with deep flavors of black cherry, raspberry, crushed flowers and a hint of mocha coating your palate. With a little air, attractive notes of clean leather and fresh earth emerge to add complexity.  This is a bigger, richer, more darkly-fruited Rosso than we’ve seem from the women of Villa le Prata in the past, but a nice squirt of cranberry acidity keeps things fresh all the way through the gently tannic finish.  It’s bright and clean enough to enjoy with lighter foods or even dishes with a little tomato (pizza, anyone?) but enough depth and heft to handle an herb-crusted pork chop.  Delicious now and built to improve steadily over the next 3-5 years.

Tenuta di Valgiano Palistorti Rosso 2011 Product #29058 (In Stock)
Tenuta di Valgiano Palistorti Rosso 2011 Tenuta di Valgiano Palistorti Rosso 2011

A blend of biodynamically grown Sangiovese and 15% each Merlot and Syrah from pebble and sandstone laced vineyards overlooking the walled Tuscan city of Luca.  I can’t quite decide if this is more like a 3-4 year-old Brunello or a really nice vintage of Antinori’s Tignanello super-Tuscan.  From the nose to the rich, powerful, palate this explodes with pure black cherry, fruit blossom, spice, and expensive leather aromas and flavors.  The very deep flavors get support from fine-grained, ripe, tannins as hints of crushed herb, licorice, and expensive balsamic weave in and out of the long, long, finish.  Distinctive, delicious, and very nicely priced.

"The 2011 Palistorti di Valgiano is fabulous. A bevy of expressive red fruit, flowers, spices and mint hit the palate in this expressive, exuberant wine. Readers who want to learn about Valgiano can start here. This is a gorgeous entry-level offering."  Antonio Galloni 92 points
