Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2015 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2015

Another outstanding 2015 from grapes grown near Rufina in Chianti. Bursting with ripe cherry and red berry fruit that get surprisingly dark and rich with air and keep on pumping right through the easygoing finish.  It's bright enough to sing with pizza and pasta and smooth enough to enjoy on its own. This tasty, easygoing, Sangiovese is just about the perfect casual Italian spaghetti night red.  And, at this great price, you can put it in the spaghetti, too and pop, pour, and enjoy with a crowd.

Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico 2013 375ml Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico 2013 375ml

Half Bottle.  A blend of Sangiovese plus 5% each of Colorino and Merlot aged in neutral cask.  Pretty and fresh with enough cut to handle red sauce nicely.

"Pretty cherry and strawberry notes pick up light touches of spice in this red, which is elegant, but needs air to show the fruit and tone down the oak. Fine length. Drink now through 2019."Wine Spectator 90 points

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Product #30794 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

San Crispino Chianti Classico 2013 Product #31128 (In Stock)
San Crispino Chianti Classico 2013 San Crispino Chianti Classico 2013

Proof that not all Chianti Classico is "serious" - although this is seriously fun to drink!  It's 100% Sangiovese from the best part of the Chianti zone with minimal wood influence.  It's bursting with juicy black cherry fruit with just a touch of earthy/leathery accents and spice. Really pumps out generous fruit over nicely grippy tannins.  An excellent value for pizza and pasta.

Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo 2013 Product #30397 (In Stock)
Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo 2013 Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo 2013

We’ll call this “modern” Chianti Classico, in the sense that Sangiovese’s hard edges have been filed down to silky smoothness and that the sweet cherry fruit is allowed to sing through without being overwhelmed by earthy, leathery, notes (which were always more about poor cellar conditions more than Sangiovese itself).  But, it’s certainly “traditional” in the sense that there’s a solid base of tannin for support and that you’ll taste Chianti – both the place and its Sangiovese grape – rather than oak.  Mainly, though, we’ll call this “fun” – because that’s the best word to describe the pleasure you’ll get from drinking this lovely wine now – 2020 or so.

"The 2013 Chianti Classico Rubiolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Gagliole. Soft, fleshy and expressive, the 2013 hits all the right notes, with vibrant red cherry fruit and fabulous balance. Silky tannins add to an impression of finesse, while attractive floral and spiced notes give the wine an attractive upper register."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points

"A red with raspberry, black pepper and lemon rind character. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Beautiful density of fruit here. Best Rubiolo ever."  James Suckling 92 points

"The 2013 Chianti Classico Rubiolo offers a pure core of bright cherry fruit with cherry liqueur and candied cherry for added intensity. Besides that very obvious cherry theme, the bouquet makes room for added spice, leather and polished mineral. Rubiolo offers a very elegant and clean presentation for those who enjoy the bright flavors and crisp nuances of Chianti Classico."Wine Advocate 91 points

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2013 Product #31110 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2013 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2013

An old-school Chianti with deep aromas of scorched earth, cherry and spice lead to a plump mouthful of juicy cherry, red berry, earth, leather and more spice. Finishes clean and fresh with juicy acids and light tannins. The sweet, ripe, fruit at the core makes this fun to drink but there's more than enough going on here to shine with savory foods like hamburger, pork, or lamb.

Dievole Chianti Classico 2013 Product #30944 (In Stock)
Dievole Chianti Classico 2013 Dievole Chianti Classico 2013

A old-time great that fell into mass-production blandness roars back into greatness with this pure, silky, Chianti. Smooth, red fruited, and classy.

"Dievole's 2013 Chianti Classico is super-impressive. A blast of dark cherries, smoke, leather, tobacco and dark spices hit the palate as this large-scaled, virile Chianti Classico. Dark and brooding in style, the 2013 boasts magnificent depth in a large-scaled Chianti Classico endowed with tremendous depth. Look for the Dievole Chianti Classico to be one of the sleepers of the vintage."  Vinous (Galloni) 91+ points

"Welcome back! I say this to the ultimate come-back kid: Dievole in Vagliagli near Castellina-in-Chianti. The 2013 Chianti Classico does a great job of underlining the natural characteristics of Sangiovese. If a #nofilter hashtag could be applied as a sensorial characteristic in wine writing, it is a fitting descriptor to use in the case of this wine. It offers a clean view of cherry, wild berry, pressed flower and balsam herb. This is a wine of beautiful purity that offers a non-interventionist's approach."Wine Advocate 91 points

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2014 Product #30552 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2014 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2014

A delightful contrast to the more serious, brooding Brunello from Voliero, the 2014 Rosso is fresh, pure and clean - unadulturated, un-fussed-with Sangiovese. It opens with aromas of fresh cherries, cranberries, and a bit of baking spice. While this wine does see 10 months of aging in large Slavonian and French oak casks, the wood adds just a touch of pleasing spiciness, and mainly serves as a way to soften and open the wine.

On the palate, it’s silky and light on its feet, and the tannins have a very satisfying, supple texture. Flavors of fresh cherries, just-ripe strawberries, and a hint of cranberry make this wine mouthwatering and food friendly, but you could also chill the bottle down just a bit and have a few sips while you’re cooking or before dinner with no trouble at all. While the description of Rosso di Montalcino as a ‘Baby Brunello’ is usually an apt one, it’s limiting to think of this style of wine as a lesser version of Brunello. It has its own perfect situation, usually one where a richer, oak-aged wine would be overwhelming. Try it with roast chicken, grilled pork, or even a simple vegetable and pasta dish.

Savignola Paolina Chianti Classico 2013 Product #31451 (In Stock)
Savignola Paolina Chianti Classico 2013 Savignola Paolina Chianti Classico 2013

A few years ago, Matt Kramer of the Wine Spectator chose Savignola Paolina as one of three producers to represent the best, traditional wine-making in Chianti Classico; these wines are over 95% Sangiovese, with the balance in Canaiolo, and he describes them as terroir-driven, representing “what Italians would call la verità (the truth)..."If Mozart made Chianti, it’d be Paolina," Kramer concluded.

We love this for the traditional style with a nice dose of warm-vintage fruit.  Dark cherry and berry fruit gain attractive complexity from accents of baking spice and fresh leather.  Nicely mouthfilling in the middle, the wine drives to a firm, chewy, finish with dark red raspberry and blackberry fruit lingering.  Drink with beef or pork now or cellar for up to five years.

Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana 2013 Product #31329 (In Stock)
Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana 2013 Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana 2013

Always a strong player in the mid-range Super Tuscan sweepstakes, Crognolo has really come into its own recently.  And, this rich, lush, 2013 is a fine companion to the 95 point 2012.  Once again, Crognolo is 90% Sangiovese from the Arno River Valley in western Chianti plus rich, ripe, Merlot. The 2013 is a bit more structured than the 2012, with firm tannins that will benefit from another year or two of time.  The flavors are all there already, though, with lovely black cherry and currant fruit, sweet spice, licorice and tobacco notes lifted with vibrant acids.  An exceptional value in top-notch Super Tuscan red - and 95 points for the 3rd consecutive vintage!

"Lots currants, blueberries, vanilla and floral character on the nose and palate. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Edgy contrast of acidity, ripe fruit and wood. Stylish, savory and delicious. A blend of sangiovese and merlot. One of the best values amongst Super Tuscan reds. Drink in 2016."  James Suckling 95 points

The wines are fairly classic in style across the board.  La Lecciaia's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is beautifully layered in the glass, with gorgeous intrigue, depth and personality all on full display. Voliero Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Product #30551 (In Stock)
Voliero Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Voliero Brunello Di Montalcino 2011

Voliero is Andrea Cortonese of Uccelliera fame’s second project, and was supposed to mostly be wine to serve at his restaurant in Siena. With someone this talented in charge, the wines couldn’t be anything less than outstanding, and word quickly spread. Now the wines from Cortonesi’s second label are so popular, he doesn’t have any left to serve at his restaurant! The 2011 Brunello opens with sappy, woodsy aromas, and is beautifully ripe and bold on the palate. If you’re looking for Brunello that doesn’t require years and years of aging, this is it.

"Big and juicy still with loads of ripe-fruit and meat undertones. Full body, velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Powerful for the vintage. From the owners of Uccelliera. Drink now: Why wait?"  James Suckling 94 points

"Andrea Cortonesi's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino (from his second brand, Voliero) shows much of the winemaking detail and care that you find in his bread and butter brand, Uccelliera. The wine shows some signs of vintage ripeness. Bold cherry and blackberry aromas are followed by spice and toasted tobacco. This is a clean and focused Brunello that performs well on the all the senses. It offers soft tannins and bold fruit flavors. The style is youthful and approachable. The finish is exceptionally silky and smooth."Wine Advocate 92 points

Uccelliera Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Product #30531 (In Stock)
Uccelliera Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Uccelliera Brunello Di Montalcino 2011

Powerful and delicious now and through 2021.

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino shows an impressive level of richness and density that starts with a long succession of black fruit aromas, dried cherry, spice, leather and tobacco. There are evident hints of the warm vintage that become apparent thanks to the blackness of the fruit and the general softness of the aromas. The wine's texture is yielding and dense with extra layers of plump fruit and chewy richness. This the proverbial "restaurant Brunello" that will drink beautifully in the near and medium-term. It already tastes spectacular and is beautifully fleshed out at this young age."Wine Advocate 95 points

La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Product #30789 (In Stock)
La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2011

The 2011 La Gerla, from the warmer south of Montalcino, is a fleshy, rich, bottle of meaty, black cherry, Sangiovese yumminess.  Drink it young (now-2025) for maximum delight. Tied for second favorite in our 2011 Brunello class!

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is dark, sensual and inviting. Succulent red cherry, tobacco, mint, leather, sage and licorice flesh out in a radiant, open-knit Brunello that will drink well upon release. There is a lot to like here, especially the wine's immediacy. The 2011 is not especially complex, but it is beautifully balanced and harmonious from start to finish."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

"Aromas of spice, bacon, smoked meat and ripe fruit follow through to a full body with round, silky tannins. Delicious finish. Sexy, opulent 2011."  James Suckling 93 points

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a compelling wine that I had the opportunity to taste at intervals several hours after opening the bottle. The wine showed a long and very interesting evolution. Moments after opening the bottle, it presented very dry aromas of pressed rose petal, red currant and dusty mineral. Hours later, the wine had gone into high gear with more articulate aromas of exotic spice and crushed clove. This fast-paced evolution leads me to believe that this vintage from La Gerla will not age as long as the excellent 2010 vintage."Wine Advocate 91 points

Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino V.V. 2009 Product #30364 (In Stock)
Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino V.V. 2009 Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino V.V. 2009

A producer we've always admired, but never bought becomes irresistible at these very significant savings.  Limited.

""Le Ragnaie is, in my opinion, the break-out star of the 2009 vintage. If I were to select my top picks of the 2009 vintage, these beautiful bottles would be among them. Their tasting profile – loaded with gorgeous, elegant floral nuances – clearly sets them apart. They are the essence of balance and Brunello beauty. The ethereal 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. sees fruit sourced from older vines from vineyards located almost at the bull’s eye center of the appellation, roughly equidistant between Montalcino and Tavernelle. Under 3,000 bottles were produced. Like the base Brunello, this wine first goes into cement vats to undergo fermentation and this step has added much in terms of the wine’s aromatic profile. Subdued notes of pressed flower, dusty earth, ash and crushed mineral render a feminine and elegant expression. This wine is simply fantastic and among my favorite of the year. A lovely, ready now, Brunello of fine weight and power.

"Freshly cut flowers, dark red fruit, licorice, spices and menthol are all layered together nicely in the glass. A wine of considerable texture and depth, the 2008 Pianrosso should drink well for at least a handful of years. There is no shortage of depth, richness or complexity in this fine effort. This is an especially concentrated style for the year, but it works. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2025."Wine Advocate 91 points

Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino Fornace 2010 Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino Fornace 2010

A producer we've always admired, but never bought becomes irresistible at these very significant savings.  Limited.

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace is a beautiful expression with an impressive level of confidence and individuality. The wine's color is a bit darker compared to its peers and its concentration is similarly thicker. But that extra padding does not take away from the inner elegance and finesse displayed here. Aromas embrace red rose petal, licorice, grilled herb and forest floor. The oak rendering is evident but not obvious: Dark smoke, crushed granite and ash give the wine a savory side. Its evolutionary track has no place to go but forward and the wine won't reach its drinking window for another three to five years. "Wine Advocate 96 points

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto offers a bright berry bouquet and soft richness in the mouth. This single vineyard that exists on a slope adjacent to the winery has absorbed more of the 2011 summer heat. You feel that warmth in the quality of the fruit on display here. Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011 Product #29355 (In Stock)
Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011

Italy's first 100% Sangiovese super-Tuscan red remains one of the very, very, best.  Limited.

"A vivid, beautiful wine, the 2011 Pergole Torte is superb. Warm, early-maturing harvests often attenuate the differences between sites, but not here. The old vines weathered the heat better, resulting in a wine that is very much in line with the past, but with more body, amplitude and resonance. Rose petals, bright red stone fruits and mint are some of the many notes that grace the super-expressive finish.  Drink 2019-2038."  Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 97 points

"The 2011 Le Pergole Torte is a stunning expression from the heart of Tuscany and a worldwide ambassador for the Sangiovese (called Sangioveto on the label) grape. Brilliant in ruby color and buoyant in aromatic intensity, the wine is brimming with inner energy and verve. It speaks in high decibels with pristine cherry, anise seed, cola, balsam herb and almond paste. There’s a touch of softness buried within what is otherwise a tightly textured tapestry of flavors. In terms of texture, the wine is infinitely silky and long. Be patient for five years more at least. Drink 2016-2028"Wine Advocate 95 points
