Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010 Product #26966 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011 Product #28153 (In Stock)
Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011 Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011

Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this: “This is just stupid delicious.” A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries. In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak. Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end. Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill. Like I said: Stupid delicious.

Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 Product #28254 (In Stock)
Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012

Alessandro Fiore got started in the wine business promoting the wines of his father’s estates - Poggio Scalette in Chianti and Castelluccio le More in Emilia Romagna – in Europe and the USA. So, when Alessandro decided to strike out on his own, it was natural that he turned to Vittorio Fiore for advice and winemaking help. In 30+ years of consulting across Tuscany, Vittorio had identified a handful of small estates with exceptional quality fruit and wine, but limited marketing resources or skills. With Vittorio finding and making the wines and Alessandro leading on marketing, Fiore Wine Collection was born.

There are several outstanding wines in this line-up, but tasting the Fiore Rosso IGT stopped us cold. This “Super-Tuscan” is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown near the storied towers of Tuscany’s walled city of San Gimignano. Fermented cool and aged all in tank, the wine opens with generous aromas of black cherry, red- and blackcurrant, and a touch of sweet spice. In the mouth, it’s flat out exciting, with luscious dark berry and cherry fruit at the core of a lushly textured, velvety, mouthful of wine. The richness and fruit carry on through the rich, plush, finish where velvet-clad tannins and tangy cherry acids provide support, keep the flavors fresh, and pull you back for another sip. You can certainly drink this all by itself, but you’ll love it even more with salami, grilled red and white meats, and even pizza! A super value Super Tuscan steal!

Lucignano Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2010 Lucignano Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2010

Always solid, this is the best vintage yet for this Chianti producer located up near Florence. It's a round, black-fruited, wine loaded with soft black cherry and plum flavors and just the right touch of earthy spice. Soft and round from beginning to end, this is a great wine for burgers or just to sip on its own. A nice peek at the amazing quality from Chianti in 2010!

Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010 Product #27327 (In Stock)
Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010 Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010

This Sangiovese from the fairly new Tuscan DOC of Montecucco waaay over-delivers for it's modest price. Lush aromas of dark cherry fruit and leather carry through to the sexy palate, which bursts with tangy ripe fruit dusted with fresh herb. There's lots of richness here, but also great energy from beginning to end where a hit of bitter chocolate and herb linger nicely. A whole lot of wine for the money.

Brunetti Sangiovese Toscana 2011 Product #28114 (In Stock)
Brunetti Sangiovese Toscana 2011 Brunetti Sangiovese Toscana 2011

There's a LOT of wine in the bottle for the money here. Hand harvested, perfectly ripe, Tuscan Sangiovese with time in barrel is normally at least twice this price. Aromas of dark black cherry, balsamic, leather and spice lead to a lush mouthful of black cherry and kirsch flavors with hints of licorice, bitter chocolate and spice. Plenty of acidity and tannin for balance and food-friendliness and a lingering finish of sweet cherry fruit and spice make this a winner.

Genius Loci Sangiovese 2005 Product #27478 (In Stock)
Genius Loci Sangiovese 2005 Genius Loci Sangiovese 2005

Dave McIntyre recommends this elegant, mature Sangiovese, and so do we!

"This is very Old World in style: earthy, with sour cherry and cocoa notes typical of a sangiovese that picks up balsamic notes from aging in large casks. It reminds me of a Brunello, at a fraction of the price, and shows how well a “simple” Tuscan sangiovese can age. We don’t have to worry about cellaring it; that’s already been done for us. Alcohol content: 13 percent." **1/2 The Washington Post

"The 2005 Sangiovese Genius Loci is remarkably elegant and polished; qualities that were hard to come by in this challenging vintage. The plush, dark red fruit coats the palate all the way through to the long, refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015." Wine Advocate 90 points

Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Product #27658 (In Stock)
Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009

The “Il Molino de Grace” name refers to a 19th Century windmill on the Grace property and suggests how Frank and Tim Grace seek to keep their wines firmly anchored in Tuscan tradition. Their 2009 Chianti Classico embraces Sangiovese’s lighter, prettier, style of fruit and concentration over the darker, more oak-influenced, styles more common today. I love the bright and cheerful fruit and hints of violet here, but there’s plenty of stuffing and intensity, too.

“Violet, black currant, black cherry, cedar and black tea flavors hold court in this sleek, supple red, with a lingering spicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2020.”Wine Spectator 90 points

“The Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese and offers pleasant aromas of dried cherries and earth. It is soft and velvet smooth with good density of sweet red fruit on the palate. Aged for 11 months in stainless steel, French barriques and tonneaux, it shows good acidity and overall structure with a long finish.”i-Wine Review 90 points

Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2009 Product #27433 (In Stock)
Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2009 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2009

Always beautiful, delicious now, and able to grow in cellar. Huge scores and Wine Spectator Top 100 for 2012!

"Deep red. A hint of game complements aromas of fresh flowers and spicy red cherry. Supple and sweet, with brisk acidity framing the dark fruit and licorice flavors. For such a fresh wine, this boasts impressive texture and breadth. Finishes with very good balance and lift."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva is striking. Succulent dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice burst from the glass in this exuberant, sexy Riserva. The tannins are nearly buried by the opulent fruit, but the wine retains great balance, while avoiding any sense of heaviness. The 2009 captures the heat and richness of the year while never abandoning its classic sense of structure. This is a superb wine from Monsanto with plenty of upside potential. Sweet floral notes add an elegant, feminine touch to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021."Wine Advocate 93 points

"A powerful and opulent style, this red displays ripe cherry, black currant, violet and tobacco aromas and flavors. The tannins are gripping on the finish, which lingers with sweet fruit and mineral accents. Well-proportioned. Best from 2014 through 2021."Wine Spectator 91 points

Ciacci Piccolomini Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Product #27884 (In Stock)
Ciacci Piccolomini Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Ciacci Piccolomini Rosso Di Montalcino 2011

Another outstanding, delicious, vintage for Ciacci's benchmark Rosso, missing out on the 90+ point score only because it's built to drink now,not age.

"Dark ruby; one of the deepest-colored 2011 Rosso di Montalcino wines. Sweet spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) complement candied red cherry and raspberry syrup on the rich nose. Then big, ripe and rich on the palate, with flavors of dark cherry macerated in alcohol, vanilla, oak and minerals lingering impressively. Finishes with vibrant acidith, smooth tannins, a trace of alcoholic heat and more than a hint of residual sugar. This is a superripe style of Rosso di Montalcino but I'm betting its that creamy sweetness and perfumed personality are going to be hard to resist."International Wine Cellar 89 points

Castello Dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 2011 Product #28167 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 2011 Castello Dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 2011

With Fontodi, Felsina, and Querciabella, this is always one of Chianti's best. There's a silky juiciness to the wine that makes it hard to resist right now, but it's likely to peak in 2015 and last through 2021. Outstanding value in elite-level Chianti.

"The 2011 Chianti Classico is a great introduction to the wines of Rampolla. Much more structured than most wines of the year, the 2011 nevertheless has plenty of radiance and voluptuousness in its dark, resonant fruit. Sweet floral and deeply pitched spice notes add lift on the beautiful, delineated finish. This is a fairly approachable vintage for the Chianti Classico, but another year or two in bottle should help the tannins soften a touch." Antonio Galloni 91 points

Lisini Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Product #28001 (In Stock)
Lisini Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Lisini Rosso Di Montalcino 2011

Often called “Baby Brunello,” Rosso di Montalcino usually offers up a little of Brunello’s ripe, juicy, fruit but not much more. Lisini’s 2011, though, really does show like a good Brunello with deeply ripe fruit flavors, a powerful mid-palate, and classic accents of tobacco, leather, and balsamic. For some reason, wine writer’s seem to feel that 91 points is as high as you can go for a Rosso, so ratings here often look about 4 points too low. Read Antonio Galloni’s words below – they give a much better sense of the quality here than the modest rating. Outstanding wine, outstanding value.

"The 2011 Rosso di Montalcino has gorgeous depth and body. Sweet red cherries, tobacco, mint and cedar all flesh out in this open, radiant Rosso. The warmth of the year adds volume, yet the 2011 remains a mid-weight and gracious wine, with lovely balance and plenty of Sangiovese character. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016."Wine Advocate 88 points

Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Product #28102 (In Stock)
Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino 2011

The Losappio family makes its Rosso from three different estate vineyards. Two lower down the hill that deliver ripe fruit flavors and body to the wine and one at the top of the hill that adds oodles of perfume and fresh acids. The grapes are all hand-harvested and fermented in tank before aging one year in large (500 liter) neutral French oak casks.

That’s the objective, technical, stuff. What you really need to know, though, is that this is a breathtaking, dazzling, perfumed beauty of a Rosso. Fragrant aromas of tender red cherry, ripe strawberry, and a big bouquet of spring flowers burst joyfully from the glass. The flavors stay pretty and pure, with a very attractive intensity of cherry/strawberry fruit with floral overtones and savory, earth, notes underneath. The length here is simply amazing – you’ll taste these flavors from the inside of your bottom lip to somewhere back behind your tonsils (if they’re still there). A delicious, lingering, mouthwatering finish of strawberry pie and rose petal delights and brings you back for more. Irresistible and delicious now and for 3-4 years.

Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2008 Product #27620 (In Stock)
Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2008 Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2008

A big, dark and powerful wine on first opening with the notes of tobacco, fresh leather, and wood spice tightly wrapped around the core of compacted black fruit. After just 15 minutes in the glass, the wine opens beautifully with luscious black cherry and raspberry occupying center ground and the leather, spice and tobacco elements plus a bit of dried blueberry around the edges. Finishes strong, too, with loads of perfumy fruit, leather, and earth lingering over the ripe tannins. It’s a big, muscle-bound, Brunello that needs to loosen up a bit before showing off its definition and strength fully – but then look out! Decant for an hour or two now or cellar for 2-5 years and drink through 2023.

“A wine with layers of ripe tannins and pretty fruit. I like the sliced mushroom and dried berry character. Flavorful finish. Rich yet reserved. Drink or hold.” James Suckling 92 points

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2010 Product #27901 (In Stock)
Fontodi Chianti Classico 2010 Fontodi Chianti Classico 2010

One of the finest releases of this benchmark Chianti ever.

"The 2010 Chianti Classico boasts striking inner perfume, but is otherswise very shut down. Today, the 2010 seems to combine the finesse of the 2004 with some of the structure of the 2006. Clean veins of 2010 acidity support the brilliant, sensual finish. The 2010 is a gorgeous wine with a bright future, although readers will need to be patient." Antonio Galloni 93 points

"The 2010 Chianti Classico is a stunning wine that epitomizes the Conca d’Oro amphitheater of vines that distinguishes Panzano in Chianti. The wine shows seamless integration with bright fruit pitted against warmer tones of leather and tobacco. It’s like a perfectly balanced scale with rich intensity on one side and elegant fruit on the other. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025."Wine Advocate 92 points

Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva "Pipparello" 2006 Product #27519 (In Stock)
Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva

A classic Bea wine of Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano and 15% Sagrantino that spends a whopping 40+ days in the fermenter before aging in large, neutral, oak casks. Wine Advocate’s description of the wine is spot on, although the rating seems low to me. A wine that will unfold and constantly change over the course of a meal – and, if you leave a little in the bottle, will delight you the next day and the day after that.

“The 2006 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello bursts from the glass with super-ripe dark cherries, tobacco, licorice, spices and flowers. This is a bold, racy Pipparrello made in an opulent, almost extravagant style for this house buffered by firm yet attractive tannins. The aromas and flavors built towards a rustic, meaty finish. Nevertheless, there is plenty to admire and certainly much to talk about in this eccentric Umbrian red.” Wine Advocate 86 points
