Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011 Product #28153 (In Stock)
Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011 Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011

Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this: “This is just stupid delicious.” A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries. In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak. Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end. Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill. Like I said: Stupid delicious.

Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 Product #28254 (In Stock)
Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012

Alessandro Fiore got started in the wine business promoting the wines of his father’s estates - Poggio Scalette in Chianti and Castelluccio le More in Emilia Romagna – in Europe and the USA. So, when Alessandro decided to strike out on his own, it was natural that he turned to Vittorio Fiore for advice and winemaking help. In 30+ years of consulting across Tuscany, Vittorio had identified a handful of small estates with exceptional quality fruit and wine, but limited marketing resources or skills. With Vittorio finding and making the wines and Alessandro leading on marketing, Fiore Wine Collection was born.

There are several outstanding wines in this line-up, but tasting the Fiore Rosso IGT stopped us cold. This “Super-Tuscan” is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown near the storied towers of Tuscany’s walled city of San Gimignano. Fermented cool and aged all in tank, the wine opens with generous aromas of black cherry, red- and blackcurrant, and a touch of sweet spice. In the mouth, it’s flat out exciting, with luscious dark berry and cherry fruit at the core of a lushly textured, velvety, mouthful of wine. The richness and fruit carry on through the rich, plush, finish where velvet-clad tannins and tangy cherry acids provide support, keep the flavors fresh, and pull you back for another sip. You can certainly drink this all by itself, but you’ll love it even more with salami, grilled red and white meats, and even pizza! A super value Super Tuscan steal!

Fiore Chianti DOCG Fiore Nero 2012 Product #28382 (In Stock)
Fiore Chianti DOCG Fiore Nero 2012 Fiore Chianti DOCG Fiore Nero 2012

This is the second wine we've featured from Italy's Alessandro Fiore and, like the way over-achieving Super-Tuscan Rosso, it's a lot of wine for the money. We could give you all kind of descriptive prose about the 2012 Fiore Nero Chianti DOCG - but it all boils down to: "This smells and tastes like Chianti!" Specifically, a really nice, old-school, Chianti with great fruit and a soft, supple, finish. Classic Chianti aromas of earthy black cherry and raspberry lead to plenty of dark berry fruit with some nice floral and licorice accents. The black fruit keeps on pumping across the fine tannins at the end as a hint of fresh leather emerges and juicy acids make your mouth water.

In short, it's a very fine Spaghetti House Chianti full of clean, modern, fruit and plenty of old-school fun. Grab a case, bake up a big dish of lasagna, and have a party!

Always solid, this is the best vintage yet for this Chianti producer located up near Florence. It's a round, black-fruited, wine loaded with soft black cherry and plum flavors and just the right touch of earthy spice. Soft and round from beginning to end, this is a great wine for burgers or just to sip on its own. A nice peek at the amazing quality from Chianti in 2010!

Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010 Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010

This Sangiovese from the fairly new Tuscan DOC of Montecucco waaay over-delivers for it's modest price. Lush aromas of dark cherry fruit and leather carry through to the sexy palate, which bursts with tangy ripe fruit dusted with fresh herb. There's lots of richness here, but also great energy from beginning to end where a hit of bitter chocolate and herb linger nicely. A whole lot of wine for the money.

Brunetti Sangiovese Toscana 2011 Product #28114 (In Stock)
Brunetti Sangiovese Toscana 2011 Brunetti Sangiovese Toscana 2011

There's a LOT of wine in the bottle for the money here. Hand harvested, perfectly ripe, Tuscan Sangiovese with time in barrel is normally at least twice this price. Aromas of dark black cherry, balsamic, leather and spice lead to a lush mouthful of black cherry and kirsch flavors with hints of licorice, bitter chocolate and spice. Plenty of acidity and tannin for balance and food-friendliness and a lingering finish of sweet cherry fruit and spice make this a winner.

Tenuta Le Calcinaie Chianti Colli Senesi 2012 Tenuta Le Calcinaie Chianti Colli Senesi 2012

Organic Grapes. Here's a gutsy, ripe, blend of Sangiovese with just a tiny bit of Canaiolo Nero) that delivers romas and flavors of black cherry fruit with accents of violets, licorice, and a hint of spice. There's just the right amount of Chianti heft and tannic power on the finish, but a nice burst of tangy cherry acidity keeps the dark fruit and floral flavors fresh and focused across the long finish. A great steak Chianti and ready to drink now.

Genius Loci Sangiovese 2005 Product #27478 (In Stock)
Genius Loci Sangiovese 2005 Genius Loci Sangiovese 2005

Dave McIntyre recommends this elegant, mature Sangiovese, and so do we!

"This is very Old World in style: earthy, with sour cherry and cocoa notes typical of a sangiovese that picks up balsamic notes from aging in large casks. It reminds me of a Brunello, at a fraction of the price, and shows how well a “simple” Tuscan sangiovese can age. We don’t have to worry about cellaring it; that’s already been done for us. Alcohol content: 13 percent." **1/2 The Washington Post

"The 2005 Sangiovese Genius Loci is remarkably elegant and polished; qualities that were hard to come by in this challenging vintage. The plush, dark red fruit coats the palate all the way through to the long, refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015." Wine Advocate 90 points

Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Product #27658 (In Stock)
Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009

The “Il Molino de Grace” name refers to a 19th Century windmill on the Grace property and suggests how Frank and Tim Grace seek to keep their wines firmly anchored in Tuscan tradition. Their 2009 Chianti Classico embraces Sangiovese’s lighter, prettier, style of fruit and concentration over the darker, more oak-influenced, styles more common today. I love the bright and cheerful fruit and hints of violet here, but there’s plenty of stuffing and intensity, too.

“Violet, black currant, black cherry, cedar and black tea flavors hold court in this sleek, supple red, with a lingering spicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2020.”Wine Spectator 90 points

“The Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese and offers pleasant aromas of dried cherries and earth. It is soft and velvet smooth with good density of sweet red fruit on the palate. Aged for 11 months in stainless steel, French barriques and tonneaux, it shows good acidity and overall structure with a long finish.”i-Wine Review 90 points

Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009 Product #28383 (In Stock)
Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009 Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009

Balia di Zola is a labor of love for a husband and wife team in Romagna. They farm 40-year-old Sangiovese vines that they recovered when they formed the estate in 1999. We flipped for this gutsy, deeply flavored, Sangiovese as soon as we tasted it. Aromas of dark, ripe blackberries, and leafy forest floor let you know this is a serious Sangiovese. On the palate, it's got plenty of structure and food-friendly acidity, with enough depth to stand up to gutsy food. A gem to enjoy with rich food or anything grilled.

Castello Dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 2011 Product #28167 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 2011 Castello Dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 2011

With Fontodi, Felsina, and Querciabella, this is always one of Chianti's best. There's a silky juiciness to the wine that makes it hard to resist right now, but it's likely to peak in 2015 and last through 2021. Outstanding value in elite-level Chianti.

"The 2011 Chianti Classico is a great introduction to the wines of Rampolla. Much more structured than most wines of the year, the 2011 nevertheless has plenty of radiance and voluptuousness in its dark, resonant fruit. Sweet floral and deeply pitched spice notes add lift on the beautiful, delineated finish. This is a fairly approachable vintage for the Chianti Classico, but another year or two in bottle should help the tannins soften a touch." Antonio Galloni 91 points

Canalicchio Di Sopra Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Product #28348 (In Stock)
Canalicchio Di Sopra Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Canalicchio Di Sopra Rosso Di Montalcino 2011

Canalicchio Di Sopra has been on a qualitative hot streak for a few years now, but they've achieved new heights with their 2011 Rosso di Montalcino. We often call Rosso a "baby Brunello," but that's never been quite as true as with this wine! A lovely, very pure, Sangiovese Grosso that's delicious now and has plenty of cellar potential, too.

"Canalicchio di Sopra is one of my favorite properties in Montalcino. The wines are consistently outstanding, have plenty of personality and also age beautifully. The estate’s 2011 Rosso di Montalcino is endowed with serious complexity and character. Tobacco, savory herbs, mint, anise and underbrush are some of the many aromas and flavors found in this Rosso, a wine that stands out for its personality. Rosso is often sold as a mini-Brunello, a label that unfortunately applies to only a small number of wines. Not here. This is a Rosso of unusual pedigree and distinction. I imagine the 2011 will drink well to age ten, perhaps beyond. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021."Wine Advocate 90 points

Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Product #28102 (In Stock)
Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino 2011 Villa Le Prata Rosso Di Montalcino 2011

The Losappio family makes its Rosso from three different estate vineyards. Two lower down the hill that deliver ripe fruit flavors and body to the wine and one at the top of the hill that adds oodles of perfume and fresh acids. The grapes are all hand-harvested and fermented in tank before aging one year in large (500 liter) neutral French oak casks.

That’s the objective, technical, stuff. What you really need to know, though, is that this is a breathtaking, dazzling, perfumed beauty of a Rosso. Fragrant aromas of tender red cherry, ripe strawberry, and a big bouquet of spring flowers burst joyfully from the glass. The flavors stay pretty and pure, with a very attractive intensity of cherry/strawberry fruit with floral overtones and savory, earth, notes underneath. The length here is simply amazing – you’ll taste these flavors from the inside of your bottom lip to somewhere back behind your tonsils (if they’re still there). A delicious, lingering, mouthwatering finish of strawberry pie and rose petal delights and brings you back for more. Irresistible and delicious now and for 3-4 years.

Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva "Pipparello" 2006 Product #27519 (In Stock)
Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva

A classic Bea wine of Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano and 15% Sagrantino that spends a whopping 40+ days in the fermenter before aging in large, neutral, oak casks. Wine Advocate’s description of the wine is spot on, although the rating seems low to me. A wine that will unfold and constantly change over the course of a meal – and, if you leave a little in the bottle, will delight you the next day and the day after that.

“The 2006 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello bursts from the glass with super-ripe dark cherries, tobacco, licorice, spices and flowers. This is a bold, racy Pipparrello made in an opulent, almost extravagant style for this house buffered by firm yet attractive tannins. The aromas and flavors built towards a rustic, meaty finish. Nevertheless, there is plenty to admire and certainly much to talk about in this eccentric Umbrian red.” Wine Advocate 86 points

Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 Product #28103 (In Stock)
Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2006

Everyone – really, without dissent – agrees that 2006 is a great Brunello vintage characterized by dense, muscular, wines with deep minerality and powerful tannins that will need a decade to resolve. Well, this Brunello is certainly “great,” but otherwise not a very typical 2006. The fruit all comes from the original 3 small vineyards planted by Mairaluce Losappio in the early 1990s. Her daughter, Benedetta, loves elegance and purity more than dark, dusky, power, so they seem to crop a little higher than some neighbors to achieve ripeness without over-concentration. Winemaking is gentle and relaxed – 20 days fermentation in steel tank, 1 year aging in new and used French oak 500l barrels and then 1 year more in 30 hectoliter Slavonian oak cask.

The result is a Sophia Loren of a wine – certainly feminine, beautiful and even seductive, but with lacking nothing in character, substance or strength. There’s a captivating transparency to the flavors of ripe berry and cherry and accents of fresh leather and tobacco and – as with the Rosso – the palate length here is superior. The ripe, almost chalky, tannins don’t get in the way of the fruit flavors pumping out on the generous finish. Drink right now for the fruit or give it a while for the earthy, leather, notes to expand.

“Full of floral, raspberry, cherry and tobacco aromas and flavors, this red also shows savory and mineral elements. Sinewy and taut, offering a silky texture and firm tannins. This shows fine length, with a sweetness that lingers. Best from 2013 through 2025. 400 cases made.”Wine Spectator 94 points

Lisini Brunello Di Montalcino 2007 Lisini Brunello Di Montalcino 2007

Delicious, elegant, Brunello at a fantastic price. Already delicious and built to improve through 2027.

"Bright and floral, with very pretty aromas of fruit too. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and fine tannins. I like the minerality to this. Long and caressing. Better in 2014. Consistently outstanding." James Suckling 93 points

"Medium red. Cherry, rose petal and a hint of leather on the vibrant nose. Sweet, pliant and fine-grained; less meaty and more floral in the mouth than on the nose. Not yet especially complex but lush and seamless, with an almost glyceral richness to the deep raspberry and cherry fruit. Finishes very long, with sweet, suave tannins." International Wine Cellar 92(?+) points

"The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is very beautiful in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice take shape as the wine opens up in the glass. This is an especially voluminous wine endowed with tons of richness and nuance. A finessed, seamless finish laced with sweet hints of tobacco and wild flowers rounds things out in style. This is a terrific showing. Lisini gave the Brunello three years in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027." Wine Advocate 94 points

Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008 Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Fontodi was already one of Chianti’s most outstanding producers, but was frustrated by the region’s regulations that required Chianti to contain inferior grapes blended with the estate’s great Sangiovese. The family crated Flaccianello as a “super-Tuscan’ in 1981 to show the world how great a 100% Sangiovese, oak-aged, wine could be. One of the first all-Sangiovese super-Tuscans, and still among the best wines in all of Tuscany.

“The pureness of fruit is so intense here. It’s also so clean and beautiful. The wine shows fabulous aromas of flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. It’s full-bodied, with chocolate, licorice, and plums. The texture is very velvety. This is a wine in near perfect proportions.” James Suckling 97 Points.
