Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Product #27960 (In Stock)
Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013

As much as we love Argentina's straight Malbec wines, they can get even better with the help of a blending partner.  In the Los Ailos, Syrah plays that role, taking what would have been a pleasant, juicy, red to a whole new level of richness and flavor.

The 2013 Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry and black plum.  Then, in the mouth, it's ripe and juicy with plenty of fresh black fruit, a little leather, and a nice touch of minerality.  It's balanced and fresh with a fine spread of ripe tannin on the back promising good things at table.  Very nice value.

Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Product #28207 (In Stock)
Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013

Back before Aussie Shiraz started to taste the same - thick, heavy, and laboring under a load of over-toasted oak - we used to find great value reds like this with ease.  Harder now, but still very much possible as one sip of the fresh, clean, and just 13.9% abv Gossford Shiraz shows.  This is all about ripe Shiraz fruit - black grape, black plum, blackberry, cherry and more - with great lift from juicy fruit acids.  The well-moderated oak treatment (6 months in French and American barrels) adds attractive spice and smoke notes and rounds off Syrah's rough edges without getting in the way of drinking fun.  "Fun" is really what this fantastic value red is all about.  And, at this price, you can share it with a crowd or just enjoy the fun anytime by itself or with everything from grilled beef to pizza.

Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2012 Product #28630 (In Stock)
Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2012 Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2012

An outstanding, simply irresistible, example of elegant, pure, Northern Rhone Syrah to enjoy now and over the next 5+ years.  Compelling aromas of dark fruit, smoked stone, spice and cracked pepper with a touch of exotic flower.  The nicely intense flavors feature sweet and ripe berry - black cherry, crushed raspberry - with perfumy accents of licorice, soy and sweet vanilla.  The wine glides across your palate like a fine Burgundy or Oregon Pinot before the silky tannins come up and leave cracked pepper, warm stone, and more exotic floral flavors lingering behind. Perfectly ripe at 12.5% and wonderfully easy to drink despite its complexity and depth.

“Bright purple. Vibrant dark fruits on the nose, with hints of Asian spices and a floral element adding complexity. Deep and sweet but lively and precise as well, offering vibrant black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of licorice. Silky tannins build on the long, pliant finish, which leaves smoke and peppery spice notes behind.”International Wine Cellar 90-92 points

Australia's most consistently excellent Shiraz (11 90-92 point WA ratings in 12 years!) is delicious again this vintage. Ripe and lush with loads of blueberry, blackberry, and plum fruit, with notes of cassis, licorice and toasted nut.  Mouthfilling, but not jammy or heavy, and with just a touch of leather with the fine tannins on the finish.  Great wine with power and grace.

Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Product #27978 (In Stock)
Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008

When journalist Victor de la Serena decided it was time to make wine, rather than just write about it, he decided to do things right.  Working in the hot, dry, Spanish wine region of Manchuela, he purchased Syrah and Mourvedre cuttings from his favorite winery, the great Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and planted those along with a little of the region’s native Bobal.  High-density plantings and meticulous dropping of fruit gave him low yields and careful winemaking with just the right mix of oak delivered a wine with a little modern polish but lots of authentic gutsiness and heart.  The 2008 is ready to go now or anytime over the next 5-8 years.  Our best price ever on this bold, blockbuster, red.

"76% syrah, 13% mourvedre and 11% bobal, planted on chalky soil; aged in 85% French and 15% American oak that ranged from new to three years old. Bright purple. Spicy, highly fragrant nose features perfumed blackberry, violet and orange peel, with hints of smoke and black olive. Really showing the syrah now. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly lithe; the intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are at once taut and rich, thanks to zesty minerality. Finishes very suave and long, with fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness.” International Wine Cellar 92 points

"Deep bright ruby. Slightly porty aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, licorice and chocolate, lifted by a violet nuance. Seriously concentrated and chewy, with the high-toned porty character carrying through in the mouth. Large-scaled, solid and sweet, showing a lot of baby fat today. Shane Syrah Valenti Ranch Anderson Valley 2011 Product #28129 (In Stock)
Shane Syrah Valenti Ranch Anderson Valley 2011 Shane Syrah Valenti Ranch Anderson Valley 2011

This is the final vintage for Shane from this great Syrah vineyard, and he's going out with a bang.  As he says, this is a "Rhone tribute" wine, full of meaty, smoky, mineral complexity.  100% whole clusters, no new wood, 1000% delight.

"Aromas of blackberry, licorice pastille, bitter chocolate and violet, with a peppery topnote. Supple and deeply pitched but with good energy and floral lift to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Sweet and tactile syrah, with silky, building tannins and noteworthy persistence. Still a baby; I'd give this wine at least another three years of rest."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Shane Syrah The Unknown North Coast 2011 Product #28130 (In Stock)
Shane Syrah The Unknown North Coast 2011 Shane Syrah The Unknown North Coast 2011

In 2011, the Syrah (85%) for The Unknown comes from one of our favorite sites and growers - Ulises Valdez's Chapoutier clone from Rockpile Vineyard.  Instead of Viognier, the 2011 includes 15% Grenache, also grown by Valdez in the Russian River.  Lots of whole cluster (75%) and moderate new oak (25%) lets the sites and vines sing out.

"Inky ruby. Aromas and flavors of dark berries, cola and candied violet, with a peppery nuance that gains power with air. Juicy and precise, with impressive clarity, focus and persistence on the silky, floral finish. In an elegant style for a syrah-based wine, with pinot-like weight and vivacity."International Wine Cellar 91 points

Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2009 Product #28293 (In Stock)
Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2009 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2009

While the Guigal single vineyard “La La” bottlings were primary drivers of Cote Rotie’s return to prominence in the 1980s, the much more affordable Brune et Blonde has become this region’s calling card.  A blend of grapes from both the “Blonde” side of Cote Rotie – where wines are more elegant and graceful – and the “Brune” side – for power and tannic structure – this bottling delivers classic Cote Rotie aromas and flavors with an extra level of richness and softness from the warm 2009 harvest.

"The 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde was harvested early in 2009. Comprised of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier, aged 36 months in equal parts new and 1-year-old barrels, it offers gorgeously complex aromas of sour cherries, blackberry, underbrush, violets, olive and steak tartare to go with a seamless, fresh and lively palate feel. Already approachable and a downright sexy example of the appellation, it should drink nicely for 12-15 years."Wine Advocate 92 points

“A rich, fleshy style, offering pastis-soaked plum, blackberry and currant fruit at the core, backed by ganache and singed juniper notes that add texture and length on the finish, with a terrific iron spine. Should age nicely.”Wine Spectator 93 points
