Laurent Miquel Syrah Grenache 2014 Product #30520 (In Stock)
Laurent Miquel Syrah Grenache 2014 Laurent Miquel Syrah Grenache 2014

Exactly the kind of fun, friendly, great value wine that France's  Languedoc region should pump out by the boatload - but somehow doesn't.  This is a great drink, blending 75% Syrah for richness with 25% Grenache for red fruit and lift.  Plenty of dark fruit - plum, blackberry, black raspberry - on the nose and palate with accents of creamy chocolate, warm earth, and spice.  Finishes big and rich with just a dusting of tannins for support.  A fine, delicious, value.

Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz 2012 Product #30485 (In Stock)
Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz 2012 Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz 2012

"Smoky cherry and blackcurrant aromas are sharpened and lifted by a peppery quality and a hint of candied flowers. Supple and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of olive that becomes stronger with air. Finishes with echoing blue fruit and olive notes, good length and just a whisper of tannins."  Vinous (Reynolds)  88 points

Wits End Luna Shiraz 2013 Product #30604 (In Stock)
Wits End Luna Shiraz 2013 Wits End Luna Shiraz 2013

The winery is called Chalk Hill at home, but has to go by Wits End here.  Nothing confusing about this rich but nicely balanced Shiraz, though!  Dark plum and blackberry fruit gets complexity from accents of leather, smoke, roasted meat and soy notes.  Full-bodied and fleshy, this has the intensity and gamey/meaty character to shine with lamb but it's soft and supple enough to just sip.

Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014 Product #30927 (In Stock)

A sneaky fine Syrah from Ardeche, the catch-all appellation surrounding the Northern Rhone.  Pop and pour and you'll find a juicy, ripe, and very fun bistro red, a wine showing the fruitiness and texture of a good Beaujolais with a touch of Crozes-Hermitage Syrah violet and black fruit.  Fresh and fun at first, give this some time in decanter and it takes on weight and loads of meaty, smoky, stony Syrah character emerges to complement the blueberry/blackberry fruit.  Either way, it's a lot of wine and loaded with food-friendly character at a very attractive price.

Aleria Syrah XX 270 Corsica 2013 Product #30490 (In Stock)
Aleria Syrah XX 270 Corsica 2013 Aleria Syrah XX 270 Corsica 2013

Ripe, pure, sophisticated.

"Made from a block of Syrah vines that are planted on steep, granite soils (which is unique as this region is mostly limestone) facing the Mediterranean Sea, the 2013 Corse XX270 sports an inky purple color to go with incredible granite influence in its liquid rock, blackberry, raspberry, floral and peppery bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, with incredible purity, this is a seriously elegant, classically styled Syrah to drink over the coming decade."Wine Advocate 93 points

Not sure what the name means, but this 96/4% blend of co-fermented Shiraz/Viognier is powerful and pure. Grill something.

"Lively scents of blueberry, blackberry, cassis and anise, with complicating floral and cracked pepper nuances. Silky, sweet and pliant, displaying good clarity and lift to its dark fruit and spicecake flavors. Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2013 Product #29581 (In Stock)
Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2013 Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2013

Vincent Paris, the young master of Cornas, delivers another brilliant St. Joseph in the tricky 2013 harvest.  It’s a bit more chunky, dark fruited, and powerful than the 2012, but opens beautifully with air to serve up dark blackberry, black plum, and Bing cherry fruit with a fine dose of Rhone Syrah earthy, meaty, complexity.  Try it with veal or beef off the grill, with roast lamb or with any dish that has a nice dose of rosemary and smoke.

"Vibrant, mineral-dominated aromas of fresh cherry and dark berries, along with notes of candied flowers and cracked pepper. Lively and precise on the palate, offering juicy blackberry and floral pastille flavors that gain flesh and power with air. Dusty tannins give grip to the finish, with the mineral note echoing."  Vinous 90 points

"With outstanding potential, the 2013 Saint Joseph Les Côtes makes the most of the vintage with its pretty blackberry and black raspberry fruit, crushed rock and subtle olive aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, juicy and balanced, with a lively, pure feel, it will drink well on release and have 4-5 years of longevity."Wine Advocate 88-90 points

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012 Product #30123 (In Stock)
Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012

The past two vintages of this oak-aged powerhouse Syrah (92%) and Grenache (8%) blend earned 90 points from Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate.  The 2012 is better still.  It opens with simply gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch, smoke, and roasted meat - complex and seductive.  On the palate, Parker's description of the 2010 is spot on:  "It possesses unbelievable richness for a wine from this appellation, as well as loads of blackberries, black currants, acacia flowers, licorice and graphite."  One of the sexiest wines I've ever tried from Ventoux, but one that has sneaky structure and glorious freshness as well.  Ready and delicious right now and built to improve over the next 5-6 years.  A "wow" wine and stellar value.

Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014 Product #30928 (In Stock)

Sylvain Gauthier is a young winemaker to watch in the Northern Rhone.  Born in Lorraine, trained in Burgundy, and since 2007, making his own wines from Syrah in and around the Northern Rhone.  As far as we can tell, Olivier Daubresse is the first to import Sylvain's wines to the US, but the Wine Advocate managed to track down a bottle of the 2013 St Joseph last year and awarded it a very nice 90 point rating.

From the cooler 2014 vintage, this is a ripe but elegant take on St Joseph Syrah, with a nice touch of barrel for complexity and richness.  Ripe black berry and plum scents gain complexity from notes of roasted meat, smoked stone, and spicy oak.  Plenty of depth and richness here, but no excess weight and outstanding freshness through the long, mouthwatering, lip smacking, finish.  Enjoy right now with grilled lamb and keep some to continue to enjoy for another 4-8 years as it gains complexity and earthy depth.

Guigal Saint Joseph Rouge 2012 Product #30187 (In Stock)
Guigal Saint Joseph Rouge 2012 Guigal Saint Joseph Rouge 2012

As always, a sophisticated St. Joseph with good fruit and plenty of smoky, mineral, complexity.

"Fresh black raspberry, cherry and floral aromas are complicated by a spicy nuance. Silky and seamless on the palate, offering intense red and dark berry flavors that gain weight and power with air. The floral element comes back strong on the finish, which features supple tannins and a hint of spicecake. Distinctly elegant and in a "city style, not rustic," as Philippe Guigal put it."  Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

"As good, if not better, than the 2011, the 2012 Saint Joseph has lots of ripeness in its sexy black fruits, chocolate, vanilla and smoked meat aromas and flavors. I suspect that by the time this sees the inside of a bottle, the oak will have integrated and it will show a more classic profile. Medium to full-bodied, textured and nicely concentrated, it too will have a decade or more prime drinking."Wine Advocate 90-92 points

"Nicely focused, with a tangy savory note up front, followed by olive, bay and dark cherry flavors. The sanguine-edged finish has good cut. Drink now through 2017."Wine Spectator 90 points

Ogier (Michel Et Stephane) L' Ame Soeur Syrah 2011 Product #29426 (In Stock)
Ogier (Michel Et Stephane) L' Ame Soeur Syrah 2011 Ogier (Michel Et Stephane) L' Ame Soeur Syrah 2011

“A dead-ringer for a Cote Blonde Cote Rotie, this cuvee may be the greatest vin de pays I have ever tasted. The 2011 l’Ame Soeur is a small, 8,000-bottle, 100% destemmed cuvee that smells like the great La Mouline from Guigal. Gorgeously fruity and rich with lots of exotic fruits, a huge perfume, and amazing texture as well as length, this is a quintessential example of an over-achieving wine.”  Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) 91-93

"Brilliant ruby-red. Heady red berry compote and spicecake scents are complicated by a suave floral quality and a zesty mineral flourish. Sweet, penetrating and pure on the palate, offering energetic raspberry and floral pastille flavors that give way to deeper cherry with air. Tight, spicy and fat-free wine with strong finishing cut and dusty tannins that add grip and firmness."International Wine Cellar 91 points

“A superb value that competes with wines two to three time its price, the 2011 Syrah l’Ame Soeur IGP is comprised of 100% Syrah that comes from schist soils, north of Ampuis, that are very similar to what’s found in the northern part of Cote Rotie (although the schist in this more northern region is a lighter gold color). Elegant and finesse-driven, with hints of crushed flowers, olive, underbrush and copious red and black fruits, this medium to full-bodied beauty has fine tannin, a seamless texture and ample length on the finish. It can be consumed now, or cellared for upwards of a decade.” Jeb Dunnuck,Wine Advocate 92 points

Arnot-roberts Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014 Product #30903 (In Stock)

"The 2014 Syrah North Coast is quite possibly the single best wine in the Arnot-Roberts range this year when it comes to quality and price. Pliant, expressive and giving, the 2014 possesses notable depth and intensity. Lavender, sage, menthol, blue/purplish fruit, licorice and graphite meld into the rich, textured finish. The 2014 was done with 100% whole clusters, but that does not take away from the wine's immediacy and sheer deliciousness, even at this early stage. Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts have chosen to focus on Sonoma Coast sites, many of which are bottled separately by many other producers, including Solas, Baker Lane, Clary Ranch, Que Syrah and Griffin's Lair, which is why this wine is now labeled Sonoma Coast (previously it was North Coast)."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

The Withers Mr. Burgess Red Sierra Foothills 2013 Product #29996 (In Stock)
The Withers Mr. Burgess Red Sierra Foothills 2013 The Withers Mr. Burgess Red Sierra Foothills 2013

Here's a marvelous (if tiny production) wine that fully captures Syrah's magic from high-elevation, Sierra Foothills, vineyards in El Dorado.  It's 75% Syrah with 18% Mourvedre for earthy complexity and 7% Grenache for a bit of extra levity and fruit.  Perfectly ripe and supple at 14.1%, it serves up complex aromas of blackberry, Bing cherry, fresh earth and dark chocolate.  On the palate it's luxuriously textured, cloaking your mouth with flavors and excellent depth and purity.  The finish is long, lush, and silky, with fruit, earth and chocolate flavors lingering nicely. Delicious stuff!

Gaillard Cote Rotie 2012 Product #29013 (In Stock)
Gaillard Cote Rotie 2012 Gaillard Cote Rotie 2012

Proof that fine Cote Rotie does not have to be either huge or stern in order to be delicious.  Very Burgundian, elegant, and pure.

"Also solid, the classic 2012 Cote Rotie (which incorporated 10% Viognier) is made in a lighter, elegant style with perfumed rose petal, peat, violets, creme de cassis and smoke all emerging from the glass. Balanced, with a medium-bodied, nicely polished profile on the palate, it will be approachable early on and drink nicely for a decade. The wines all have a classic, fresh and focused feel, and certainly, those looking for big textures and loads of fruit should look elsewhere."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2011 Product #29955 (In Stock)
Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2011 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2011

Delicious already but built to improve for a decade or two!

"Smoky, mineral-accented cherry and dark berry scents are lifted by a suggestion of peppery spices. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, showing excellent focus and depth to its bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors. Opens up slowly on the long, floral finish, which is firmed by dusty, fine-grained tannins. This suave wine is delicious right now but should age gracefully on its balance."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

"I loved the forward, sexy style of the 2011 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde, and it’s just hard to resist today. Loaded with notions of kirsch, blackberry, toasted nuts and spice, it’s medium to full-bodied, elegant, seamless and hedonistic. I’d happily drink it anytime over the coming decade."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Still youthfully tight, with a core of steeped cherry, plum skin and fig paste flavors coiled up with lush singed vanilla bean and fruitcake notes. Offers a dense, sappy feel through the finish, as the woodsy note still needs to be soaked up fully. Worth cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2027."Wine Spectator 92 points
