We have no idea how such a delicious wine made from 30 year-old, dry farmed, Tempranillo vines in La Manacha could be quite this inexpensive…but we’re glad it is! This is real, honest, “vinous” wine, packed with cranberry and black cherry fruit, accents of licorice root and cracked pepper, and long, smooth and refreshing on the finish. A perfect wine for big celebratory parties, weddings, back yard cookouts, or just sipping all on its own.
“Bright ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by black pepper and candied rose. Tightly focused red berry flavors are underscored by smoky mineral and floral qualities. Emphatically fruity and silky in texture, with a smooth, gently sweet finish.”International Wine Cellar 88 points
- Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2011 Product #27141 (In Stock)

Here's the kind of value that made Spain famous in the international wine world, but that seems to have vanished in recent years. And, the 2011 is even tastier than the very fine 2010! This is 100% Tempranillo, aged 3 years in American Oak, and it delivers loads of honest, unconfected, aromas and flavors with a juicy, zingy, finish. A fine party or backyard cookout red at a very compelling price.
- Zaleo Tempranillo Seleccion Ribera Del Guadiana 2010 Product #26799 (In Stock)

This 100% Tempranillo from Spain’s heartland could become your new "go to" burger, pizza, or just sipping on its own red! Made all in tank - no oak - it's loaded with black plum, cherry, and natural spice aromas and flavors. Bitter chocolate and black licorice notes emerge in the middle and carry on through a fun and tasty mouthwatering finish. No harm in chilling this a bit, either!

Only someone a like winemaker Norberto Miguel would call wine from 35 year-old vines his “young vine” cuvee or sell it at such a silly good price. Norberto farms and harvests this Tempranillo for freshness and verve, and then ferments it in tank using carbonic maceration – the technique made famous in Beaujolais – to retain all of the grapes’ juicy fruit.
The Wine Advocate 90 point 2009 was one of our “go to” party and weeknight supper wines a few years ago and his 2010 was our very first Chain Bridge Cellars Selection – a designation we give to the very best food-friendly, great value, wines ready to enjoy tonight before, during, and after a meal. The 2012 is even better! Even darker and more fruit-filled than in the past, it serves up explosive aromas and flavors of ripe black cherry and plum, licorice, lilac, and a touch of aged tobacco. The refreshing acidity makes your mouth water and hand reach for another sip, and the flavors of black fruit, licorice, and fresh herb linger on and on. More than ripe and generous enough to drink on its own (try it with a quick chill!), there’s sneaky structure here, with fine, ripe, tannins providing the support it needs to work with a huge range of foods. And, the best in the USA price isn’t bad, either! - Finca Sobreno Toro 2009 Product #26865 (In Stock)

The best vintage in a while for this always excellent Toro Tempranillo value! Plenty of ripe blackberry and plum, chocolate, and a nice touch of spice on the nose and palate. Gently marked by well-integrated American oak, this is still a touch firm on the finish, so better with food. Very nice value!
"Bright violet color. Smoky perfume of candied cherry and dark berries with a spicy overtone. Pliant and velvety in texture, offering gently sweet cherry and blackberry flavors that put on weight in the glass. Ripe and lively on the powerful finish, showing gentle tannins and persistent sweetness."International Wine Cellar 90 points
- Telmo Rodriguez "g" Dehesa Gago Toro 2011 Product #26971 (In Stock)
-
-
Another very nice release of the old-vine Tinto de Toro (Tempranillo) from Telmo Rodriguez. No oak, but lots of lush richness and a touch of licorice and chocolate from the ripe grapes, too. Nice write up in the Washington Post as well!
"Star Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez produces this sensuous red from old-vines Tinto de Toro, the local name for Spain’s flagship Tempranillo. Fermented in concrete and stainless steel, this unoaked wine is lush and dense, almost chewy in texture. Any restaurant with a charcuterie plate should carry this bottle." ** Washington Post, 3/15/13
- O Fournier Ribera Del Duero 2010 Product #27187 (In Stock)

-
Fine value in easy-drinking, juicy, Tempranillo.
"The 2010 Urban Ribera is from younger Tinta del Pais vines in Berlangas and Roa-Burgos that sees three months in French oak barrels. It has an understated bouquet of raspberry leaf and wild hedgerow with touches of briary. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp, taut tannins and a very vibrant fresh finish with juicy raspberry and cranberry notes on the aftertaste. Punchy and lively, this is brimming over with flavor at a great price. Drink now-2015."Wine Advocate 89 points
- Bodegas Lar De Paula Rioja Crianza 2008 Product #26896 (In Stock)
-
-
Perfectly ripe Tempranillo fruit took well to 12 months aging in French and American oak, delivering classic Crianza freshness and fruit to go with the spicy oak accents. This will get better and better over the next few years, but the elegant, sophisticated, interweaving of fruit, earth, and spice notes are very compelling right now! Great wine at table, especially with anything roasted or grilled.
"The 2008 Crianza has a lifted mulberry, sloe and bay leaf scented bouquet with a dash of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins on the entry. It is very well-balanced with a rounded, sensual finish that offers touches of pepper and burnt toast. This is a very fine Crianza. Drink now-2018."Wine Advocate 91 points
- Vina Bujanda Rioja Crianza 2009 Product #27200 (In Stock)
-
-
Lovely fruit like a modern-style Rioja but with classic elegance and weight.
"Brother and sister Carlos and Pilar Martinez-Bujanda run Vina Bujanda, their family having made wine since 1889. However, this is recent addition to the Riojan landscape, since the estate was only established in the village of Oyon in 2009. The 2009 Crianza is sourced from Rioja Alta and Alavesa: pure Tempranillo aged in French and American barrels for 12 months. It has a perfumed bouquet of ripe strawberry and Morello, with well-integrated oak that allows the fruit to shine. The palate is very supple and rounded on the entry with corpulent red cherry and cassis fruit. The finish is well-defined, crisp and vibrant, lingering nicely in the mouth. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 90 points
- Agricola La Bastida Tierra Crianza Rioja 2009 Product #27248 (In Stock)

-
Here's a round, soft, and juicy young Rioja with bright fruit and just a touch of classic American oak. Easy drinking fun.
"The juicy flavors of cherry and plum are deepened by loam and tobacco notes in this plump, fresh red, with modest tannins, bright acidity and good focus. Drink now through 2016."Wine Spectator 89 points
- Bodegas Lar De Paula Rioja Reserva 2005 Product #26897 (In Stock)
-
-
A classy take on Rioja Reserva. It's all Tempranillo fermented in steel and aged 18 months in French and American oak and then held at the winery in bottle until ready for release. Shows the oak-influence you'd expect in a Reserva, but with plenty of spicy black fruit and fine intensity and power. Great wine for lamb or richer beef dishes.
"The 2005 Reserva has a spicy nose with touches of balsamic and cooked meat. The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy entry of blackberry, tobacco and black pepper with a structured, bay leaf-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Drink 2013-2019." Wine Advocate 91 points
- Condado De Haza Ribera Del Duero 2007 Product #25419 (In Stock)
-
-
In the 16 months since Tanzer published his review of the 2007 Condado de Haza, it’s rounded out beautifully and opened up for immediate enjoyment. It’s 100% Tempranillo given a long fermentation – 25 days – and then aged 18 months in fine-grained American oak. Easy enough to enjoy on its own on a cold winter’s night, this will sing with grilled meats, rich braises, or most any stew or dish featuring meat and black olives.
“Ruby-red. Musky aromas of berry skin and cherry, with complicating notes of dried flowers and herbs. Firm on entry, then fleshier in the middle, offering sweet red fruit flavors and a subtle peppery quality. Sweeter on the anise-tinged finish, where the cherry element lingers with good intensity. This will be drinking well soon, or could even be enjoyed now with a little aeration.”International Wine Cellar 90 points
- Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2009 Product #26360 (In Stock)

-
From 80+ year-old Tempranillo vines, hand-harvested, and crushed by foot to extract plenty of color and flavor without getting harsh tannins from the stems or seeds. After vinification the wines go into American and French oak barrels – in 2009, 4 new and 12 old (7 years). The result is just about the perfect marriage between Rioja tradition and modern winemaking sensibility. In 2009 – the best vintage in Rioja since the great 2005 – this shows all of the power and depth of the past few releases but with a smidge more elegance and purity. It’s already generous aromatically, with powerful scents of black raspberry and plum fruit accented by notes of sweet spice, tobacco, violets and a touch of iron. The flavors are rich and almost lush with loads of ripe, dark, fruit lifted up by a note of blood orange acidity and supported by masses of fine, velvety, tannins. Drink now with rich or smoky foods or let it get even more elegant and complex over the next 8-15 years.

Norberto Miguel only makes this, his top wine, in selected vintages of exceptional ripeness and quality. It’s from 80+ year-old Tempranillo vines planted by Norberto’s grandfather and grown on the rocky, barren, soils of Rioja Alavesa. Norberto hand-harvests the grapes when they taste good to him and then crushes them gently by foot to extract plenty of color and flavor without getting harsh tannins from the stems or seeds. After vinification the wines go into American and French oak barrels (about 30% new) And there the wine sits until Norberto thinks it’s ready – not one day longer.
The result is just about the perfect marriage between Rioja tradition and modern winemaking sensibility. In 2010, this wine is just fabulous, supple and mineral with excellent length and very little obvious oak. Scents of black raspberry and plum fruit accented by notes of sweet spice, tobacco, violets and a touch of iron. In the mouth, the wine is very pure and elegant, with focused dark fruit and spice lifted by a hint of tangy cherry acidity and supported by silky smooth, ripe, tannins. With air, a touch of coffee/mocha emerges and fruit broadens, but the minerality and acidity keep the wine focused, pure, and beautiful. Drink it now with roasted or grilled meats and enjoy how it gains even more layers over the next 8-10 years in cellar. Outstanding value for a Rioja of this quality and grace. - Bodegas Laukote Rioja Gaubela 2011 Product #27285 (In Stock)

The first vintage of a new wine from Norberto Miguel. Old-vine Tempranillo is de-stemmed and then goes into a tank without being crushed. Then, Norberto climbs into the tank and treads the grapes by foot, eventually sinking down to his chest as the berries collapse and release their fruit. After fermentation, he drains the free-run wine off the skins and ages it in a mixture of French plus a little American oak, almost all used.
The result is a very focused, tightly wound, wine full of intense black cherry, plum and berry fruit with floral and licorice accents. Extraordinary minerality for Tempranillo here, with firm tannins under a long, complex, finish. Wants time in decanter or cellar now, but as it opens - watch out! - Bodegas Maurodos San Roman Toro 2009 Product #27263 (In Stock)
-
-
The San Roman Toro has been one of the region’s best, most consistent, wines for years, always marrying the intense ripeness you’d expect from Toro with just a touch more class and sophistication than you usually find. In 2009, both the ripeness and the sophistication have reached new heights – even as this pre-release pricing brings the cost down to less than our best prices on the 2003 or 2005 vintages!
“The 2009 San Roman comes from 45-year-old bush vines or older in San Roman, Morales de Toro, Arjujillo, Villaester and El Pego between 720 and 760 meters and sees 24 months in new and used French (70%) and American (30%) oak. It offers a very seductive bouquet with luscious red berry fruit – raspberry, wild strawberry infused with crushed violets that open with aeration. The palate is full-bodied and very well-balanced, ripe succulent tannins, plush blueberry and black cherries forming the core followed by a silky, ripe, sensual, velvety smooth finish. Modern in style, but extremely well-crafted, this is a sensational, delicious Toro red. Drink now-2018+.”Wine Advocate 96 points
