Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013 Product #31052 (In Stock)
Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013 Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013

Lodi is known for its plush, jammy style of Zinfandel, and Victor Vineyards’ version manages to stay much more balanced than most examples while still retaining a sense of place. At 14.8% alcohol, it’s not a light wine by any means, but it carries its weight well, and the alcohol comes across as pleasant warmth rather than booziness. Aromas of raspberry, strawberry, baking spices and pepper round out the appealing nose. Take a sip and you’ll be rewarded with brighter fruit flavors than you might expect - a hint of cranberry keeps things fresh, and the mouthfeel is definitely full bodied and satisfyingly plush, but not overwhelming. Ideal with an all-American meal of grilled New York strip or burgers!

"Zinfandel has become so risky in recent years that I often shy away from it: Too many examples are hot with excessive alcohol and ripeness, with sheer power masquerading as quality. This fine example reminds me why I love zin: raspberry and cranberry flavors, with hints of smoke and earth. It carries its high alcohol well (and 14.8 percent is moderate compared to some zins that crack 15.5 percent or higher). Best of all, if you don’t finish the bottle, you might be rewarded the next night with even more-vibrant fruit flavors.” ***/Exceptional, Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post

Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014 Product #31346 (In Stock)
Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014 Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014

The Seghesio name has been synonymous with Zinfandel ever since Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vines in Sonoma's Alexander Valley in 1895.  Edoardo's great-great-great (?) grandson, Ted Seghesio, still makes the wines here, maintaining the family's 120-year tradition of care and quality – and value.

And, the 2014 keeps the streak alive!  It’s 95%+ Zinfandel with just a touch of Petit Sirah for color and mid-palate fruit.  You’ll find all of Zinfandel’s briary berry fruit on display here from the big aromas of cherry and raspberry to the red/black fruit mélange on the palate and long finish.  The dash of herb, sweet spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander), and dusting of black pepper make this a sweet-and-savory party in your mouth.

"Plump and luscious, this is jam-packed with fruit. Lively blackberry, pepper and other spice box aromas lead to ripe and rich flavors of black raspberry, caramel and licorice. There are more complex Zinfandels, but few that are more enjoyable to drink. Drink now through 2022."Wine Spectator 93 points

Beran Zinfandel California 2013 Product #31542 (In Stock)
Beran Zinfandel California 2013 Beran Zinfandel California 2013

A new wine from Joe Wagner of Belle Glos fame, here's a big, fleshy, Zinfandel just jam-packed with rich, ripe, fruit.  Given 30 days of skin contact (for maximum flavor/texture extraction) and 12 months in barrel (to round off the edges), it's an unusually plush zin that stays just this side of "over the top."  Classic Zinny aromas and flavors of crushed red berry, cherry pie, and plenty of oaky spice and vanilla with a smooth as silk finish.

Carlisle Zinfandel Bedrock Vyd 2014 Product #31611 (In Stock)
Carlisle Zinfandel Bedrock Vyd 2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Bedrock Vyd 2014

There’s just a little bit of American history in the ground at Bedrock. The site was first planted in 1854 by the gentlemen who would come to be known as Generals William “Tecumseh” Sherman and “Fightin’ Joe” Hooker.  After phylloxera it was replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst—a mining magnet, an early father of California, and the father of publisher William Randolph Hearst.

Mike Officer farms two plots of this large site.  About 90% is 1888 Zinfandel with the rest "mixed blacks" (Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and others) plus a dollop of fortifying Mourvedre, also planted in 1888. The Mourvedre gives depth and a structure that will need a little time to fully unwind.  Mike recommends drinking from 2018-2028 and that seems right to us.

“The 2014 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard emerges from one of the warmer sites Carlisle works with. All of that intensity comes through in a big, dramatic wine endowed with serious presence, intensity and tannic heft. Black cherries, menthol, tar, licorice and smoke hit the palate in a big wine that shows the virile side of Zinfandel. The Bedrock is not especially polished, subtle or refined, but it sure is distinctive.”  Vinous (Galloni) 92-94 points

Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 2014 Product #31612 (In Stock)
Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 2014

Planted in 1934 by Celestino Papera, this vineyard is unusual in that the main "mixed black" component here is Carignan (tiny amounts of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Valdiguie are present, too).  It's a cooler site, making late-ripening Carignan a curious choice.  But, as Mike says, " it seems to work, producing a powerfully elegant Zinfandel."  Already super aromatic and expressive, it’s a wine you’ll be pretty thrilled with right now although the winery suggests holding until 2019.

“The 2014 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is exuberant, rich and extroverted to the core. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mint, tobacco, cedar, menthol and spices flesh out in a hugely appealing wine endowed with real depth and intensity. The finish is perhaps a bit chunky, but there is so much to like that I can look past that slightly rustic part of the wine's personality. This historic Russian River site was planted in 1934. The blend of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignane is unusually high for mixed blacks vineyards planted during this period.”  Vinous (Galloni) 92-94 points

Carlisle Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vyd 2014 Product #31613 (In Stock)
Carlisle Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vyd 2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vyd 2014

Limit 4btl per customer.  One wonders what Emanuel Goldstein was thinking in the early 1880s when he decided to plant Monte Rosso Vineyard.  It's a big site (350 acres) perched on the last high flank of the Mayacamas Mountain Range.  The slope, remoteness and difficult terrain must have made planting a nightmare.  Fortunately the bright red, iron-rich, soils that give the vineyard its name also nurture old vines that give intense, powerful, wines.  This needs time to shine but the wait will be worth it.

“The 2014 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is wonderfully lifted and soaring right out of the glass, with intense floral notes and plenty of red-fleshed fruit. A burst of acid and tannin follows as the wine asserts its mountain personality. The Monte Rosso will need quite a bit of time to fully come together, but it has tons of promise, along with the potential to age for many, many years.  Drink 2020-2030.”  Vinous (Galloni) 93-95 points
