Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2006 Product #21954 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2006 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2006

So, you see “Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2006” and you think, “Well, that’s got to be over the hill!”  Think again, because Philippe Plantevin’s 2006 blanc is just getting started and will put many CdP Blanc’s (at 3x the price) to shame! A blend of 40% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc, and 30% Marsanne, the 2006 CdR Blanc has moved past its primary, fruity, youth and emerged as something very special indeed.  The aromas are rich, deep, and wildly complex.  The main note is beeswax, but beeswax from a hive that feeds on lavender and thyme, along with fresh figs just picked on a hot summer day and dried orange peel.  I realize this is getting pretty out there, but the aromas are exotic, wild, and compelling.

In the mouth, big flavors and even bigger acidity.  Dried honey, orange peel, peach skin and even a touch of Earl Grey tea swirl around the entry and midpalate before fantastic acidty wells up and scrapes your tounge clean.  The finish is long and brings more exotic fruit along with a pretty vanilla note that lingers nicely.  At once cream and super vibrant, and sure to be amazing with everything from cod or halibut in a cream sauce to ripe cheeses.

Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2006 Product #23831 (In Stock)
Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2006 Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2006

A new estate for Jonas and one that is finally getting much-deserved distribution here.  The estate spreads out over 40 hectares and consists entirely of bush-trained Tempranillo vines ranging from 10 to 100 years old.  The owners work their estate naturally – no chemical sprays or pesticides and natural fertilizers used sparingly.

Ceres is the estate’s “entry-level” wine, but there’s nothing “low-end” about it at all!  It’s 100% Tempranillo aged carefully in 100% new American oak – not that you’d guess that from the wine!  Generous aromas of red berries and plums are accented with notes of fresh hay, black pepper, spice and earth.  The flavors are ripe and deep but retain lovely elegance and purity.  You’ll find dark red fruits, spice, and dark chocolate in the middle and then a long, complex, lingering finish at the end.  Best of all –the price!  The 2005 Ceres released in the US at $34; buying direct from Jonas cuts the price a lot!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006 Product #26857 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s usually the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar.  Here, the combination of a softer vintage (2006) and a half-dozen years of aging in perfect conditions delivers a big wine, but one that’s wonderfully supple and ready to enjoy.  Opens with generous aromas of dark black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice.  In the mouth, it bursts with black and red berry fruit, cracked black pepper, licorice root, mineral, and savory spice flavors.  Ripe and extracted enough to fill up your mouth, the bright acidity and still firm, but perfectly balanced, tannins provide structure and freshness.  Fruit, mineral, and black pepper flavors linger nicely, and make this a fantastic match with grilled lamb, roast pork, or any robust dish.  In the drinking window now and ready to enjoy over the next half-decade or more.

Clua Milliennium Tinto 2006 Product #23840 (In Stock)
Clua Milliennium Tinto 2006 Clua Milliennium Tinto 2006

From the high altitude vineyards of Terra Alta, the Clua Millennium is a blend of 60% Garnatxa Negre (Grenache), 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 3% Monastrell and a touch of Pinot Noir. Powerful yet elegant, the wine shows a big blast of flavor without any hint of heaviness or thickness. The finish is very long and lovely, with the big fruit covering up the ripe tannin the wine will use to age gracefully for years.

"The 2006 Mil.lennium Tinto is made up of 60% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, with the balance Monastrell and Pinot Noir aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak. Sandalwood, exotic spices, lavender, smoked meat, black cherry, and black raspberry scents set the stage for a juicy, dense, savory, multi-dimensional wine with excellent volume and intensity. Give it 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2013 to 2021." Wine Advocate 92 points

Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso De Veo 2006 Product #26873 (In Stock)
Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso De Veo 2006 Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso De Veo 2006

You might want to talk with us before you try this...not for the unprepared. Wild, untamed, and volatile.  Oh, and also weird, stinky, bitingly tannic and firmly acidic.  And yet, delicious and compelling, a wine you can't take your eyes off of (in part because you're not sure what it might do to your dinner).  We love it and want you to, too, but no guarantees.

"The 2006 Rosso De Veo is Sagrantino from the estate’s best young vines. It is a surprisingly ripe, forward wine loaded with sweet dark fruit. Here, too, most of the wine’s appeal is upfront, as the intensity of the fruit tapers off a bit on the finish. Slight hints of oxidation."Wine Advocate 88 points

Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Puligny 1er Les Referts 2006 Product #25226 (In Stock)
Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Puligny 1er Les Referts 2006 Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Puligny 1er Les Referts 2006

Labeled for us under the Marie Bernard name to comply with Virginia's restrictive distribution rules, this is the exact same wine sold under the Marc Morey label in France and the rest of the USA.

More to Morey than Chassagne!  The Domaine purchases fruit for this Puligny from the very fine 1er Cru vineyard, Les Referts.  Referts sits on the northernmost border of Puligny-Montrachet, just across a path from Meursault 1er Les Charmes.  Given the amount of clay here, it’s not surprising that this rich, ripe, 2006 is kind of a Meursault/Puligny hybrid, marrying buttery, chalky, richness to classic Puligny minerality.  Rich enough for lobster but still very precise and transparent.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2006 Product #26257 (In Stock)
Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2006 Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2006

Critics' scores are a poor way to understand wines this unique and complex, but the Advocate's review of the 2006 includes a very nice description (if an understated rating!).

"The 2006 Mas de Daumas Gassac red leads with pungent brown spice- and pepper-dusted fresh mulberry and black currant. Like its 2007 counterpart, fresh, faintly tart, bitter blue and black fruits rule the palate, accompanied by smoky black tea, tobacco, and cedar. The wine’s lean, bright cast is well-grounded in a palpable sense of sheer density, leading to a finish of impressive tenacity. This promises at least 8-10 years of interesting bottle maturation – again, based on an experience with mature vintages that was recently considerably refreshed." Wine Advocate 88 points

Andrea Oberto Barolo 2006 Product #23261 (In Stock)
Andrea Oberto Barolo 2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo 2006

"Good full red. Complex nose melds raspberry, coffee and sexy smoky oak, lifted by some floral high tones. Rich, sweet and creamy, with impressive fat to the red fruit flavors. Not the last word in complexity but this plush, seamless wine is classy and satisfying for normale."International Wine Cellar 90 points

“Despite keeping a much lower profile than many of his colleagues Fabio Oberto makes wines that can hold their own with the best producers, not just in La Morra, but in Piedmont. His range is consistently outstanding from top to bottom.

Oberto’s 2006 Barolo is a serious wine at this level. There is a spiciness to the fruit I find very attractive. With time in the glass the aromas and flavors gain definition, caressing the palate all the way through to the classy finish. This is a jewel of a wine and a standout among its peers in 2006. Oberto makes their entry-level Barolo from a combination of higher-altitude plots in La Morra ranging from 390-410 meters. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.”Wine Advocate 90 points

“Outstanding. This is unusually ripe for this cru as the elevated placement of the vineyard typically makes for very cool and reserved wines when young. A green fruit, citrus and pear nose merges gracefully into refined, pure and focused flavors that are also a bit more powerful than usual though there is plenty of the hallmark minerality and vibrancy on the impressively long and fine finish. Lovely juice.” Allen Meadows 91 points

Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006 Product #26707 (In Stock)
Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006

The silver-label Alexander Valley Cab is Silver Oak’s biggest production wine, but the flagship black-label Napa Valley Cabernet is a big, big, step up in intensity, polish, flavor – and, usually, price.  So, when you have a chance to get Silver Oak Napa for the same price (or less!) and the Alexander Valley wine?  That’s what we call “a buying opportunity”!

From the winery:  "The 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a complex and refined wine that develops beautifully in the glass to reveal multilayered nuances of aromas. It has a dark ruby color and an enticing nose of cassis, black truffles and violets. On the palate, the wine has an elegant attack and bursts with flavors of fresh forest fruit, potpourri and Asian spices. It has a long finish with smooth, well-integrated tannins. With proper cellaring, it should give drinking pleasure through 2026. Composition: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot."

Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Product #24547 (In Stock)
Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006

"Large-scaled, chewy and sweet on the palate; bigger and deeper than the 2005, with impressive depth of fruit and sheer volume. Finishes with huge chewy tannins that saturate every millimeter of the palate, but this infant appears to have the fullness and breadth to support its structure."International Wine Cellar 92 points

“This is a strong set of 2006 Barolos from father and son team Andrea and Fabio Oberto. I had a chance to taste the 2006s next to the estate’s 2005s, and it is pretty clear the 2006s possess an extra dimension of generosity over their older brethren that, among other things, results in better integration of the oak.

The 2006 Barolo Vigneto Rocche is the alter-ego of the Brunate. Where the Brunate is powerful the Rocche is refined, where the Brunate is intense, the Rocche is subtle. Floral red fruits, menthol and minerals are some of the notes that emerge from this high-toned, aromatic Barolo. The aromas and flavors seem to resonate off each other like voices in a cathedral, creating a sensation of endless discovery as the wine opens up in the glass. The structure of the vintage comes through on the energetic, vibrant finish. Here, too, patience is key, but this is shaping up to be another magnificent Barolo from Oberto. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.”Wine Advocate 93+ points

Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Product #25940 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006

As seductive a young Cru Barolo as we've seen from 2006. Sure, it wants a decade, but decant it for an hour and you'll be blown away tonight!

"Cerequio. Brunate. Cannubi. These are the Italian equivalents of Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Chambertin; in other words, among the most precious vineyards anywhere in the world. Damilano’s 2006 Barolo Cannubi emerges from the glass with surprising richness and weight. Berries, flowers and spices flow effortlessly from this rich, textured Cannubi. The wine shows quite a bit more depth than is usually the case for a vineyard that tends towards the feminine, but the textural elegance and silkiness on the mid-palate and finish serve to provide a sense of proportion. Fine, elegant tannins frame the close. This is another fine effort from Damilano. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Starts out supple, with the smooth texture framing black cherry, bitter almond and licorice notes. A firm base of tannins is offset by sweet fruit, as this glides to a lingering aftertaste of tobacco, spice and cherry. Best from 2013 through 2032."Wine Spectator 94 points

Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006 Product #25941 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006 Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006

"The 2006 Barolo Brunate shows the masculine personality of this site in its dark fruit, minerals, menthol and spices. Today the wine is very much closed in on itself, but the fruit and perfume should emerge as the tannins soften. This is a commendable effort that falls short of being truly inspiring, a shame considering how precious Brunate is. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

"A wiry, angular red, awkward today, yet revealing a core of cherry, strawberry, rubber and tobacco flavors. This is vibrant, settling down on the lingering finish and echoing spice and leather accents. Best from 2014 through 2032."Wine Spectator 92 points

Ch Leoville Poyferre St Julien 2006 Ch Leoville Poyferre St Julien 2006

A bit of a monster now, but getting close to showing the complexity burried within.  Give it another few years and then watch it sing!

"Full ruby-red. Ripe aromas of currant, milk chocolate and smoky oak. Lush, sweet and full, with superripe yet backward flavors of dark berries, dark chocolate and minerals. Wonderfully layered, structured wine whose excellent vinosity and firm tannins call for several years of patience."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"Dense ruby/purple, with sweet blackberry and black currant fruit with hints of smoke, espresso roast, and new saddle leather, this is another impressively endowed but tannic, backward style of wine. The concentration, brightness, and depth are all present, but I can't see it being even approachable in less than 5-7 years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028."Wine Advocate 91 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Product #24541 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006

In January 2011, a group of us sat around a table over a long dinner in Puligny-Montrachet blind tasting Burgundies at virtually every level imaginable.  In the middle of a flight of Grand Cru reds from some of Burgundy’s biggest names, a decanter of this made its appearance.  Immediately, there was much snorting, sighing, and delight everywhere, and someone looked at Pascal Maillard, sitting to my left, and said, “Pascal, I think this could be your Corton-Renardes.”  Pascal’s eyebrows shot up and he snorted, “This is not my wine.  My wine is not this good.”  Another sniff and sip:  “If this is my wine, I’m not charging enough!”

The wine was, of course, Pascal’s 2006 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, and it was easily the red  wine of the night.  Pascal thought it was Clos Vougeot from high on the hill, and there’s something to that comparison.  The aromas are super lush and generious, full of sweet black cherry, blood orange, browned shitake mushroom, and smoky stones.  In the mouth its rich and full; dark cherry, spiced raspberry, coffee, and smoked meat flavors all appear along with a feral note that marks this as Corton-Renardes.  Very long in the mouth, the sweet spiced fruit gains support from super ripe, sweet, tannin and a little raspberry juice lingers on the finish.  Pascal does, in fact, charge too little for a wine of this quality, so enjoy it before he comes to his senses!

Clearly showing its pedigree and class, the 2006 Clos Vougeot is a work of art. Big, big aromatics, raspberries, lilacs, incense, figs and brown sugar. A very sexy wine that comes in waves on the palate and should be an early maturing by Grand Cru standards due to its supple and ripe tannins. But who cares when the juice is this good? Tremendous! Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Product #24154 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006

Rampolla is one of the best estates in Tuscany you’ve never heard of – and d’Alceo is their top wine.  The 2006 released at $275 per bottle; clearly, we’re doing a little better than that.

"Castello dei Rampolla is one of the benchmark properties in Tuscany, and for good reason. At their finest, these are some of the most elegant, luscious wines readers will come across. The 2006 D’Alceo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is a much tighter-wound wine than the Sammarco but it also seems to be holding back a lot more sheer density in reserve. Full-bodied, rich and monstrously tannic at this stage, it doesn’t taste too different than it did when I first sampled it from tank in November 2006! The wine possesses dazzling inner perfume, refined tannins that need time to emerge and exceptional overall balance. It is a fabulous effort from Rampolla. Gaja Sori Tildin Langhe 2006 Product #26244 (In Stock)
Gaja Sori Tildin Langhe 2006 Gaja Sori Tildin Langhe 2006

In perfect condition and most still in un-opened wood six packs.  A very rare deal.

“Good full, deep red. Sexy aromas of minerals, truffle and ineffable rose petal. Suave and lush, showing a surprisingly open-knit texture that partly masks the wine's serious underpinning of fine tannins. Very long and aromatic on the aftertaste."International Wine Cellar 94 points

“Angelo Gaja's 2006s from Barbaresco are lovely, although they require a bit of aeration to find their focus. As always Gaja blends in a small percentage of Barbera for his single-vineyard Langhe wines. The 2006 Langhe Sori Tildin opens with a gorgeous, nuanced bouquet that leads to an equally expressive core of ripe, red fruits. This medium-bodied Sori Tildin is the most focused and energetic of these wines. It offers exceptional length and a refined, polished close. As is often the case, the Sori Tildin is also the most delicate and feminine of the single-vineyard wines. This is a very strong effort even if the explosiveness of the finest vintages is missing. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.” Wine Advocate 94 points
