Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Product #27594 (In Stock)
Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006

Here's a 2006 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon (mainly Merlot) Right Bank Bordeaux that’s perfectly ripe at just 13% and perfectly mellowed from time in barrel and cellar. On first pour, both the color and aromas are still show very youthful, with primary scents of fresh red currant and black raspberry accented by notes of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and spice. With a little air, the aromas get darker and richer, showing off this wine's beautiful ripeness.

Seven years time has softened the palate to a silky smooth texture and allowed the pretty berry and currant fruit to come forward.  You're starting to find notes of age here as earthy tobacco, fresh mushroom, and cedar peak out, but the overall thrust is still behind the juicy, fresh, fruit.  Very light, sliky, tannins come up at the end to provide classic Bordeaux structure for food – especially that classic pairing of maturing Bordeaux and lamb!  You can enjoy this now while dinner is in the oven and will be delighted to keep on quaffing it until all the clean-up is done.  Fresh, fruity, delicious, and attractively packaged in an authentic Bordeaux wood case – a fantastic value!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006 Product #26857 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne 2006

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s usually the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar.  Here, the combination of a softer vintage (2006) and a half-dozen years of aging in perfect conditions delivers a big wine, but one that’s wonderfully supple and ready to enjoy.  Opens with generous aromas of dark black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice.  In the mouth, it bursts with black and red berry fruit, cracked black pepper, licorice root, mineral, and savory spice flavors.  Ripe and extracted enough to fill up your mouth, the bright acidity and still firm, but perfectly balanced, tannins provide structure and freshness.  Fruit, mineral, and black pepper flavors linger nicely, and make this a fantastic match with grilled lamb, roast pork, or any robust dish.  In the drinking window now and ready to enjoy over the next half-decade or more.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2006 Product #26257 (In Stock)
Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2006 Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2006

Critics' scores are a poor way to understand wines this unique and complex, but the Advocate's review of the 2006 includes a very nice description (if an understated rating!).

"The 2006 Mas de Daumas Gassac red leads with pungent brown spice- and pepper-dusted fresh mulberry and black currant. Like its 2007 counterpart, fresh, faintly tart, bitter blue and black fruits rule the palate, accompanied by smoky black tea, tobacco, and cedar. The wine’s lean, bright cast is well-grounded in a palpable sense of sheer density, leading to a finish of impressive tenacity. This promises at least 8-10 years of interesting bottle maturation – again, based on an experience with mature vintages that was recently considerably refreshed." Wine Advocate 88 points

Dom Borgeot Santenay Blanc 1er Cru Les Gravieres 2006 Product #20272 (In Stock)

This was very popular when first released in 2008 and has just gotten better with time.  A savory take on Chardonnay from a fine 1er Cru site, it shows notes of fennel, scallion green, mint and chalk to go with the still fresh yellow apple and peach fruit.  Bright acids complement the rich, round, mouthfeel and there's nice length on the palate and herb and fruit-inflected finish.

Dom Larue Saint-Aubin 1er Les Combes 2006 Dom Larue Saint-Aubin 1er Les Combes 2006

My choice of this set for drinking right this very minute, although another 5 years in the cellar won’t do any harm.  Everything I love in the rich, luxurious, 2006s with oodles of smoky pear, soft apple, spice and mint aromas and flavors and just the right touch of chalk on the end.  A bit of caramel and fresh butter come out with air in this mouth-coating, but very fresh, white Burgundy.

Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva "Pipparello" 2006 Product #27519 (In Stock)
Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva

A classic Bea wine of Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano and 15% Sagrantino that spends a whopping 40+ days in the fermenter before aging in large, neutral, oak casks.  Wine Advocate’s description of the wine is spot on, although the rating seems low to me.  A wine that will unfold and constantly change over the course of a meal – and, if you leave a little in the bottle, will delight you the next day and the day after that.

“The 2006 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello bursts from the glass with super-ripe dark cherries, tobacco, licorice, spices and flowers. This is a bold, racy Pipparrello made in an opulent, almost extravagant style for this house buffered by firm yet attractive tannins. The aromas and flavors built towards a rustic, meaty finish. Nevertheless, there is plenty to admire and certainly much to talk about in this eccentric Umbrian red.” Wine Advocate 86 points

Andrea Oberto Barolo 2006 Product #23261 (In Stock)
Andrea Oberto Barolo 2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo 2006

"Good full red. Complex nose melds raspberry, coffee and sexy smoky oak, lifted by some floral high tones. Rich, sweet and creamy, with impressive fat to the red fruit flavors. Not the last word in complexity but this plush, seamless wine is classy and satisfying for normale."International Wine Cellar 90 points

“Despite keeping a much lower profile than many of his colleagues Fabio Oberto makes wines that can hold their own with the best producers, not just in La Morra, but in Piedmont. His range is consistently outstanding from top to bottom.

Oberto’s 2006 Barolo is a serious wine at this level. There is a spiciness to the fruit I find very attractive. With time in the glass the aromas and flavors gain definition, caressing the palate all the way through to the classy finish. This is a jewel of a wine and a standout among its peers in 2006. Oberto makes their entry-level Barolo from a combination of higher-altitude plots in La Morra ranging from 390-410 meters. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.”Wine Advocate 90 points

Il Molino Chianti Classico Il Margone Riserva 2006 Product #27659 (In Stock)
Il Molino Chianti Classico Il Margone Riserva 2006 Il Molino Chianti Classico Il Margone Riserva 2006

I’m not a huge fan of Chianti Classico Riserva, and find far too many wines lose their fruit and get overwhelmed by wood flavors during the mandated extra time in barrel.  But this selection of Frank and Tim Grace’s best Riserva barrels lets the dark, powerful, fruit shine while also delivering the beefy, muscular, and earthy flavors and structure you want in a Chianti Riserva.  And, because it’s 100% Sangivoese – no Syrah, Cabernet, or Merlot added – it’s an outstanding expression of maturing Chianti.

The big rating and “Highly Recommened” status make this a strong candidate for Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list this year.  Delicious stuff, but only 750 cases made and not much available in the US.

Highly Recommended. The combination of intense balsamic and sweet cherry flavors and new oak mesh well in this maturing red. Shows an extra layer of tannins, but this remains harmonious overall, with a broad-shouldered profile. Excellent finish. Drink now through 2025. 750 cases made.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2006 Product #22385 (In Stock)
Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2006 Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2006

This has always been a favorite from Pascal’s cellar, and it clearly shows the class and grace of a 1er Cru site in Aloxe-Corton.  With a few years aging, it's just become richer, deepr, and much more interesting.  The wine opens with a complex nose of sappy cherry, plum skin, mushroom, spice and a touch of red flower.  In the mouth, it’s focused and silky with complex flavors of ripe red cherry fruit framed by a mineral streak and a nice dash of earthy, smoke and coffee.  The cherry and coffee  notes really linger on the long finish, and the wine gets earthier and more layered with air.  Delicious now and with another 10 years in front of it.  Stunning quality for the price.

Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 Product #28103 (In Stock)
Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2006

Everyone – really, without dissent – agrees that 2006 is a great Brunello vintage characterized by dense, muscular, wines with deep minerality and powerful tannins that will need a decade to resolve. Well, this Brunello is certainly “great,” but otherwise not a very typical 2006.  The fruit all comes from the original 3 small vineyards planted by Mairaluce Losappio in the early 1990s.  Her daughter, Benedetta, loves elegance and purity more than dark, dusky, power, so they seem to crop a little higher than some neighbors to achieve ripeness without over-concentration.  Winemaking is gentle and relaxed – 20 days fermentation in steel tank, 1 year aging in new and used French oak 500l barrels and then 1 year more in 30 hectoliter Slavonian oak cask.

The result is a Sophia Loren of a wine – certainly feminine, beautiful and even seductive, but with lacking nothing in character, substance or strength.  There’s a captivating transparency to the flavors of ripe berry and cherry and accents of fresh leather and tobacco and – as with the Rosso – the palate length here is superior.  The ripe, almost chalky, tannins don’t get in the way of the fruit flavors pumping out on the generous finish.  Drink right now for the fruit or give it a while for the earthy, leather, notes to expand.

“Full of floral, raspberry, cherry and tobacco aromas and flavors, this red also shows savory and mineral elements. Sinewy and taut, offering a silky texture and firm tannins. This shows fine length, with a sweetness that lingers. Best from 2013 through 2025. 400 cases made.”Wine Spectator 94 points

Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Chassagne 1er En Virondot 2006 Product #25223 (In Stock)
Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Chassagne 1er En Virondot 2006 Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Chassagne 1er En Virondot 2006

Labeled for us under the Marie Bernard name to comply with Virginia's restrictive distribution rules, this is the exact same wine sold under the Marc Morey label in France and the rest of the USA.

“Outstanding. This is unusually ripe for this cru as the elevated placement of the vineyard typically makes for very cool and reserved wines when young. A green fruit, citrus and pear nose merges gracefully into refined, pure and focused flavors that are also a bit more powerful than usual though there is plenty of the hallmark minerality and vibrancy on the impressively long and fine finish. Lovely juice.” Allen Meadows 91 points

Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Product #24547 (In Stock)
Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006

"Large-scaled, chewy and sweet on the palate; bigger and deeper than the 2005, with impressive depth of fruit and sheer volume. Finishes with huge chewy tannins that saturate every millimeter of the palate, but this infant appears to have the fullness and breadth to support its structure."International Wine Cellar 92 points

“This is a strong set of 2006 Barolos from father and son team Andrea and Fabio Oberto. I had a chance to taste the 2006s next to the estate’s 2005s, and it is pretty clear the 2006s possess an extra dimension of generosity over their older brethren that, among other things, results in better integration of the oak.

The 2006 Barolo Vigneto Rocche is the alter-ego of the Brunate. Where the Brunate is powerful the Rocche is refined, where the Brunate is intense, the Rocche is subtle. Floral red fruits, menthol and minerals are some of the notes that emerge from this high-toned, aromatic Barolo. The aromas and flavors seem to resonate off each other like voices in a cathedral, creating a sensation of endless discovery as the wine opens up in the glass. The structure of the vintage comes through on the energetic, vibrant finish. Here, too, patience is key, but this is shaping up to be another magnificent Barolo from Oberto. Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Product #25940 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006

As seductive a young Cru Barolo as we've seen from 2006. Sure, it wants a decade, but decant it for an hour and you'll be blown away tonight!

"Cerequio. Brunate. Cannubi. These are the Italian equivalents of Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Chambertin; in other words, among the most precious vineyards anywhere in the world. Damilano’s 2006 Barolo Cannubi emerges from the glass with surprising richness and weight. Berries, flowers and spices flow effortlessly from this rich, textured Cannubi. The wine shows quite a bit more depth than is usually the case for a vineyard that tends towards the feminine, but the textural elegance and silkiness on the mid-palate and finish serve to provide a sense of proportion. Fine, elegant tannins frame the close. This is another fine effort from Damilano. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Starts out supple, with the smooth texture framing black cherry, bitter almond and licorice notes. A firm base of tannins is offset by sweet fruit, as this glides to a lingering aftertaste of tobacco, spice and cherry. Best from 2013 through 2032."Wine Spectator 94 points

Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006 Product #25941 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006 Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006

"The 2006 Barolo Brunate shows the masculine personality of this site in its dark fruit, minerals, menthol and spices. Today the wine is very much closed in on itself, but the fruit and perfume should emerge as the tannins soften. This is a commendable effort that falls short of being truly inspiring, a shame considering how precious Brunate is. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Product #24154 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006

Rampolla is one of the best estates in Tuscany you’ve never heard of – and d’Alceo is their top wine.  The 2006 released at $275 per bottle; clearly, we’re doing a little better than that.

"Castello dei Rampolla is one of the benchmark properties in Tuscany, and for good reason. At their finest, these are some of the most elegant, luscious wines readers will come across. The 2006 D’Alceo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is a much tighter-wound wine than the Sammarco but it also seems to be holding back a lot more sheer density in reserve. Full-bodied, rich and monstrously tannic at this stage, it doesn’t taste too different than it did when I first sampled it from tank in November 2006! The wine possesses dazzling inner perfume, refined tannins that need time to emerge and exceptional overall balance. It is a fabulous effort from Rampolla. Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Product #24541 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006

In January 2011, a group of us sat around a table over a long dinner in Puligny-Montrachet blind tasting Burgundies at virtually every level imaginable.  In the middle of a flight of Grand Cru reds from some of Burgundy’s biggest names, a decanter of this made its appearance.  Immediately, there was much snorting, sighing, and delight everywhere, and someone looked at Pascal Maillard, sitting to my left, and said, “Pascal, I think this could be your Corton-Renardes.”  Pascal’s eyebrows shot up and he snorted, “This is not my wine.  My wine is not this good.”  Another sniff and sip:  “If this is my wine, I’m not charging enough!”

The wine was, of course, Pascal’s 2006 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, and it was easily the red  wine of the night.  Pascal thought it was Clos Vougeot from high on the hill, and there’s something to that comparison.  The aromas are super lush and generious, full of sweet black cherry, blood orange, browned shitake mushroom, and smoky stones.  In the mouth its rich and full; dark cherry, spiced raspberry, coffee, and smoked meat flavors all appear along with a feral note that marks this as Corton-Renardes.  Very long in the mouth, the sweet spiced fruit gains support from super ripe, sweet, tannin and a little raspberry juice lingers on the finish.  Pascal does, in fact, charge too little for a wine of this quality, so enjoy it before he comes to his senses!

Bodegas Asenjo & Manso A & M 2006 Product #25792 (In Stock)
Bodegas Asenjo & Manso A & M 2006 Bodegas Asenjo & Manso A & M 2006

A rare “luxury cuvee” that is all about the amazing fruit and not about oaky flash, this is one of the most delicious Tempranillo-based wines I have tasted in  years.  The fruit is from the heart of the vineyard, all from vines planted by Teofilo Asenjo 80 to 100 years ago.  And, while good, the Wine Advocate review undersells the wine by a lot.  Intense, complex, aromas of dark fruit, sweet herb, and cardamom spice get deeper and more layered with air.  In the mouth intensely focused fruit and roasted meat flavors with accents of licorice and balsamic.  Firm, fine, and very long with precise tannin and mouthwatering acidity.  Drink it now with roast lamb or standing rib roast or cellar for even more complexity.  Amazing stuff.

"The flagship 2006 A & M was sourced from 100 year old vines, was fermented with native yeasts, and went through ML in barrel before spending 15 months in French oak. Deep purple in color, it offers up a liqueur-like nose of blackberry, black cherry, sandalwood, mineral, espresso, and lavender. Full-bodied on the palate with outstanding volume and density, this layered, concentrated effort borders on opulence. It has structured to go the distance and should see its 30th birthday in peak shape. Drink 2010-2035.”Wine Advocate 93+ points

Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 Product #24117 (In Stock)
Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2006

"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino flows with gorgeous layers of dark red fruit. This is one of the more muscular, virile wines of the vintage. Slow to reveal its character, the Valdicava Brunello will require significant patience, but I have seen the wine blossom beautifully, even in the smallest of vintages. A blast of iron, smoke, tar, licorice and new leather inform the deep, intense finish. This is a hugely promising, brilliant Brunello from proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese, but it needs to be buried in the cellar for at least a few years. Readers who can’t wait should open the wine a few hours in advance, which will allow the fruit to emerge. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031"Wine Advocate 95+ points

"Though rich and round, the cherry, black currant and violet flavors in this Brunello are pure and focused. This is beautifully textured, displaying bright acidity and refined tannins that drive the long mineral aftertaste. Best from 2012 through 2025."Wine Spectator 95 points

Gaja Sori Tildin Langhe 2006 Gaja Sori Tildin Langhe 2006

In perfect condition and most still in un-opened wood six packs.  A very rare deal.

“Good full, deep red. Sexy aromas of minerals, truffle and ineffable rose petal. Suave and lush, showing a surprisingly open-knit texture that partly masks the wine's serious underpinning of fine tannins. Very long and aromatic on the aftertaste."International Wine Cellar 94 points

“Angelo Gaja's 2006s from Barbaresco are lovely, although they require a bit of aeration to find their focus. As always Gaja blends in a small percentage of Barbera for his single-vineyard Langhe wines. The 2006 Langhe Sori Tildin opens with a gorgeous, nuanced bouquet that leads to an equally expressive core of ripe, red fruits. This medium-bodied Sori Tildin is the most focused and energetic of these wines. It offers exceptional length and a refined, polished close. As is often the case, the Sori Tildin is also the most delicate and feminine of the single-vineyard wines. This is a very strong effort even if the explosiveness of the finest vintages is missing.
