Bodegas Fernando Remirez De Ganuza Rioja Reserva 2006 Product #30451 (In Stock)
Bodegas Fernando Remirez De Ganuza Rioja Reserva 2006 Bodegas Fernando Remirez De Ganuza Rioja Reserva 2006

Here’s proof that, just because Rioja is a little hard to understand, some great wines get overlooked and (fortunately) closed-out at crazy prices.  This is a lovely blend of “traditional” and “modern” Rioja.  “Traditional” in its blend of grapes, which includes 10% Graciano, 3% Garnacha, and 2% “other” with it’s 85% Tempranillo.  Garnacha and, especially, Graciano give this fantastic lift and energy and help steer Tempranillo’s sometimes heavy black fruit flavors to the juicier, fresher, red side of the spectrum.

And, it’s “modern” in the insistence on low yields, perfect ripeness, impeccable cleanliness, and the use of French oak barrels to round off the wine’s edges and add a sheen of spicy oak.  The aromas and flavors are great here, but it’s the texture that lifts this to “must buy” territory – silk on entry, crushed velvet in the middle, and dusty spice on the long finish.  An insane deal, folks.  Back up the truck.

"85% tempranillo, 10% graciano, 3% garnacha and 2% "others". Glass-staining ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet exudes redcurrant, cherry, smoky minerals and flowers, with exotic spice notes gaining strength with air. Juicy, palate-staining red fruit flavors are lifted by zesty acidity and complicated by notes of succulent spices and sweet chewing tobacco. The mineral quality repeats strongly on the finish, which is impressively focused, pure and persistent. This wine's finesse is noteworthy."  Vinous  (Reynolds) 93 points

"The 2006 Remirez de Ganuza is the same blend made in a more modern style using only small oak. It is dark ruby-colored with a compelling nose of pain grille, graphite, incense, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry. Dense, rich, and packed on the palate with layers of savory fruit, it will evolve for 3-4 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2031."Wine Advocate 92 points

A drinker's vintage, 2006 is showing well now, especially in this legendary Haut-Medoc estate's stunning magnum format.  Maturing aromas of black currant, cedar, warm spice, tobacco and herb carry trough on the medium-bodied palate.  Time has softened the tannins to silky smoothness and gives this an extra layer of sophisticated complexity.  Drink or hold.

Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Product #24547 (In Stock)
Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006

"Large-scaled, chewy and sweet on the palate; bigger and deeper than the 2005, with impressive depth of fruit and sheer volume. Finishes with huge chewy tannins that saturate every millimeter of the palate, but this infant appears to have the fullness and breadth to support its structure."International Wine Cellar 92 points

“This is a strong set of 2006 Barolos from father and son team Andrea and Fabio Oberto. I had a chance to taste the 2006s next to the estate’s 2005s, and it is pretty clear the 2006s possess an extra dimension of generosity over their older brethren that, among other things, results in better integration of the oak.

The 2006 Barolo Vigneto Rocche is the alter-ego of the Brunate. Where the Brunate is powerful the Rocche is refined, where the Brunate is intense, the Rocche is subtle. Floral red fruits, menthol and minerals are some of the notes that emerge from this high-toned, aromatic Barolo. The aromas and flavors seem to resonate off each other like voices in a cathedral, creating a sensation of endless discovery as the wine opens up in the glass. The structure of the vintage comes through on the energetic, vibrant finish. Here, too, patience is key, but this is shaping up to be another magnificent Barolo from Oberto. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.”Wine Advocate 93+ points

Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006 Product #25941 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006 Damilano Barolo Brunate 2006

"The 2006 Barolo Brunate shows the masculine personality of this site in its dark fruit, minerals, menthol and spices. Today the wine is very much closed in on itself, but the fruit and perfume should emerge as the tannins soften. This is a commendable effort that falls short of being truly inspiring, a shame considering how precious Brunate is. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

"A wiry, angular red, awkward today, yet revealing a core of cherry, strawberry, rubber and tobacco flavors. This is vibrant, settling down on the lingering finish and echoing spice and leather accents. Best from 2014 through 2032."Wine Spectator 92 points

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2006 Product #30313 (In Stock)
Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2006 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2006

Named for Champagne's most famous widow - and inventor of everything from Vintage Champagne to riddling racks - this is very grand indeed.  In 2006, it's a blend of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay aged 8 years on the lees in bottle before disgorgement in early 2015.  A powerful, rich, wine with loads of potential in front of it.

"Bright and graceful, this seamlessly knits a subtle streak of smoke-tinged minerality with flavors of almond financier, poached pear, candied kumquat and crème de cassis, focused by vibrant acidity and a refined, creamy mousse. Disgorged January 2014. Drink now through 2030."Wine Spectator 94 points

Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Product #24154 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006

Named to honor Castello dei Rampolla, Alceo Rampolla, this Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot blend is one of the most respected, sought-after, and highly rated wines in all of Italy.  The 2006 is a bit of a monster and remains locked-down tight now, but the potential here is huge.

"Castello dei Rampolla is one of the benchmark properties in Tuscany, and for good reason. At their finest, these are some of the most elegant, luscious wines readers will come across. The 2006 D’Alceo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is a much tighter-wound wine than the Sammarco but it also seems to be holding back a lot more sheer density in reserve. Full-bodied, rich and monstrously tannic at this stage, it doesn’t taste too different than it did when I first sampled it from tank in November 2006! The wine possesses dazzling inner perfume, refined tannins that need time to emerge and exceptional overall balance. It is a fabulous effort from Rampolla. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031."Wine Advocate 96 points

"Shows beautiful aromas and flavors of currant, toasty oak, tobacco and licorice. Full and very polished, with a wonderful finish. A gorgeous young wine. Layered and structured."Wine Spectator 98 points
