Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008 Product #28952 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008 Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008

Wow. Just wow.  A stunning red that's easy to sip and has the stuffing for big food.  How did they make such a fantastic wine at such a low, low, price?

"The 2008 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza is a blend of 93% Tempranillo and 7% Garnacha aged for 18 months in French and American oak. It has a mellow bouquet of dried herbs, terracotta tiles and dusky black fruit that is very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin: tart red berried fruit, laced with tobacco and dried herbs on the dry, crisp finish. This is a superb classical Rioja Crianza. Drink now-2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

While many Port houses struggled in the cool 2008 vintage, Quinta do Noval released both an outstanding vintage and fantastic value LBV. It's an elegant, vibrant, port (as you'd expect from the year) with vibrant raspberry, blackberry, chocolate and violet aromas and flavors.  Still nicely firm and well shaped tannins lend support to this delicious, drink me now, Port.

Grivault Meursault 2008 375 Ml Grivault Meursault 2008 375 Ml

If you love Grivault’s Bourgogne Blanc and have never tried his “real” Meursault -- well, it’s time.  The flavors and aromas in the Meursault are very similar to the Bourgogne but ratcheted up a notch.  Hazelnuts, almond, butter, white flower and peach aromas and flavors plus a beguiling fresh mint note.  Easy to drink now but with a good 5-10 years of development ahead of it.

Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Product #27978 (In Stock)
Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008

When journalist Victor de la Serena decided it was time to make wine, rather than just write about it, he decided to do things right.  Working in the hot, dry, Spanish wine region of Manchuela, he purchased Syrah and Mourvedre cuttings from his favorite winery, the great Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and planted those along with a little of the region’s native Bobal.  High-density plantings and meticulous dropping of fruit gave him low yields and careful winemaking with just the right mix of oak delivered a wine with a little modern polish but lots of authentic gutsiness and heart.  The 2008 is ready to go now or anytime over the next 5-8 years.  Our best price ever on this bold, blockbuster, red.

"76% syrah, 13% mourvedre and 11% bobal, planted on chalky soil; aged in 85% French and 15% American oak that ranged from new to three years old. Bright purple. Spicy, highly fragrant nose features perfumed blackberry, violet and orange peel, with hints of smoke and black olive. Really showing the syrah now. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly lithe; the intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are at once taut and rich, thanks to zesty minerality. Finishes very suave and long, with fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness.” International Wine Cellar 92 points

Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008 Product #28085 (In Stock)
Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008 Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008

Tre Bicchieri 2014!  Taurasi is often called “The Barolo of the South,” not because its grape – Aglianico – tastes like Nebbiolo, but because it delivers powerful, ageworthy, wines that deliver big aromatics and fruit with intense structures that meld perfectly with food.  The trick to making a great Taurasi is to mellow Aglianico’s fierce, somewhat rustic, tannins without overwhelming the grape’s character with wood.  And that’s exactly what’s happened here.

Ripe, hand-harvested, grapes are fermented in steel and then go into small French oak barrels (mostly used) for 18 months.  To allow more time for the wine to soften without adding overt oak flavors, the wine then moves to larger, aged, oak barrels for another year and then rests in bottle for up to a year more.  The result is a wine that still has plenty of cellar potential and power, but that you can also enjoy right now with roasted meat, mature cheeses, or – my favorite – any dish laced with roasted peppers and olives.

“Lots of spicy, dried fruit and black pepper character. Full body, round and chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Traditional-style Taurasi. Better in a year or two when the tannins soften.”  James Suckling 93 points

Jules Desjourneys L'interdit (Fleurie 2008) Product #28515 (In Stock)
Jules Desjourneys L'interdit (Fleurie 2008) Jules Desjourneys L'interdit (Fleurie 2008)

Denied the AOC for a touch too much VA, this wine sizzles and sparks as the tangy flavors run across your palate.

“The wine that will be known as 2008 Desjourneys is none other than Duperray’s 2008 Fleurie – combining Chapelle des Bois and Les Moriers – that was refused appellation and so is officially, merely, “vin de France.” Believe me, this is “vin de France” in the same sense that Debussy signed many of his late masterpieces “musicien francais.” The high-toned floral, herbal, and fruit distillate esters that memorably marked the Chapelle des Bois from cask as well as the black tea-tinged and more bittersweetly herbal and concentrated dark berries of the original Les Moriers, have been preserved in this marriage. This finishes with mouthwatering salinity and a tenacious, almost Gewurztraminer-like meld of brown spices concentrated floral and herbal essences. I would anticipate it being worth following for half a dozen years, but on no account should it be missed earlier-on.” Wine Advocate 93 points

Fowles Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2009 Product #28052 (In Stock)
Fowles Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2009 Fowles Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2009

It's been a while since we got this excited by Shiraz.  From Australia's coolest growing region, this delivers plenty of New World fruit in a sophisticated, food-friendly, frame.  Really, really, good.

"The 2008 Ladies who Shoot their Lunch Shiraz gives a very deep garnet garnet-purple color with pronounced aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice plus subtle notes of mocha, cinnamon and cardamom. Rich and full, this Shiraz is nicely balanced by crisp acid and a medium level of grainy tannins. Drink it now to 2018+."Wine Advocate 91 points

"This cool-climate Shiraz opens with a range of ripe dark berry and cherry flavors, shaded with smoky, minerally overtones that balance against pinpoint acidity and mingle nicely through the generous, focused finish."Wine Spectator 91 points

Montaribaldi Barbaresco Palazzina 2008 Product #28806 (In Stock)
Montaribaldi Barbaresco Palazzina 2008 Montaribaldi Barbaresco Palazzina 2008

A traditional wine in overall shape but with a touch more fruit and "oompf" in the middle than often found in Barbaresco.  Luxurious and rich with masses of lovely tannins.  Decant for a few hours now or cellar for 5-8 years.

"Here’s a finely crafted and rich expression of Barbaresco with evident oak tones that are enhanced by mature berry fruit, cola and creamy vanilla. The wine shows very nice saturation, richness and persistency. It also has a sour note of astringency on the close at this young stage in its life."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Dom Thibert Pouilly Fuisse Vignes Blanches 2008 Dom Thibert Pouilly Fuisse Vignes Blanches 2008

Everything takes a big step up in this single vineyard wine from one of Thibert’s two best sites.  The Burghound review captures this well – rich, complex, and loaded with driving minerality.  Outstanding

“Moderate wood doesn't detract from the otherwise fresh, bright and expressive nose that offers up white orchard fruit aromas, subtle spice hints and floral notes that precede rich, sappy and admirably pure flavors that possess plenty of acid buffering dry extract and excellent length as well as notably more complexity. Sweet Spot/Outstanding”Allen Meadows 89-92 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008

Burghound “Outstanding Top Value”

A great vintage for this excellent Village level red made from Jean-Michel’s oldest vines – all 50 years old or older.  As always, this delivers plenty of power and structure, but there is an extra level of ripeness and grace here as well.  This will drink nicely with decanting now and really hit its stride in another 5 years.

“From 50+ year-old vines raised in 100% new wood. This is extremely primary, in fact so much so that residual fermentation aromas are still evident though the red berry fruit appears clean and pure and is followed by impressively rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract that confers a beguiling texture to the mouth feel and renders the firm tannins almost invisible on the impeccably balanced finish. Recommended as villages level wines typically do not have this kind of completeness. Outstanding Top Value.”Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2008 Product #27679 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2008 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2008

A winery to watch from just above Freedom Hill.  2008 is the third vintage of Dena Drews and Ernie Pink's labor of love we've sold and it's hardly surprising that the 2008s are the best yet.  A late release from the winery, the 2008 Amalie's Cuvee is pretty, full of fruit, and - best of all for a 2008 - is actually showing delineation and complexity already.  Yummy stuff.

"The 2008 Pinot Noir Amalie’s Cuvee offers greater depth and concentration. A captivating nose of wood smoke, allspice, brown sugar, violets, and assorted black fruits leads to a plush, moderately structured wine that will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring. This pleasurable effort will be at its best from 2012 to 2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

“Outstanding. A touch of reduction knocks down the expressiveness of the nose somewhat but not enough to conceal the otherwise cool, ripe and pretty orchard fruit and citrus aromas. The delicious, rich, round and nicely plump flavors possess good mid-palate concentration and are set off against a racy, intense, detailed and lightly mineral-suffused finish that also displays a touch of austerity. Excellent.”Allen Meadows 91 points

What a treat - a late-released Napa Cab from the outstanding 2008 vintage to enjoy right now!

"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisoli Vineyard is a beautiful, if somewhat inward wine graced with exquisite finesse. Freshly cut flowers, mint, blackberries and cassis are some of the nuances that emerge from this delineated, finessed Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the wine is a bit tight, but it should soften with another year or so in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020."Wine Advocate 92 points

Brovia Barolo "Garblet Sue" 2008 Product #26531 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Brovia Barolo

Garblet Sue is the name of a small slice of the famous Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione.  It always gives classically structured Barolo with firm tannins, but this 2008 adds more roundness and fruit than you normally find here.  Still quite tight, but it's going to be a stunner!

“Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. A huge finish laced with iron, asphalt and crushed rocks rounds things out in style. This is a super-classic Barolo from Brovia. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.”Wine Advocate 96 points

Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj 2008 Product #28934 (In Stock)
Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj 2008 Domenico Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj 2008

The newest Barolo from Domenico, the name means "whimsical airplane" in dialect - a tribute to Domenico's day dreaming as a child.  The wine is from Serralunga, the only Barolo he makes outside of Monforte.  Each lable in the six pack is slightly different - fitting for a wine the presents something new with every sip. Beautiful.

"From 35-year-old vines in Badarina in Serralunga. Good deep red. Medicinal aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, cherry, menthol and tobacco; very Serralunga. At once suave and penetrating, offering terrific definition and inner-mouth aromatic character. Powerful acidity is keeping this wine tightly wrapped today, but it has buns of steel to support a graceful evolution in bottle."International Wine Cellar 94(+?) points

"The 2008 Barolo Aeroplanservaj puts on a whole different act. Here, the emphasis is on elegance and finesse. The opulence and massiveness of the wine fits in with the Clerico philosophy, but unlike the Barolo Briccotto its strongest cards are played with a more subtle strategy. The aromas of black fruit and spice are wrapped a bit tighter, and the wine shows some nervous tension in the glass that needs to soften with age. I loved those delicate sprigs of mint and wild flower that somehow emerge from the inner depths of this rock-solid wine. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."Wine Advocate 95 points

Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2008 Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2008

"Sandrone’s 2008 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of breathtaking textural finesse and elegance. Nothing really stands out, so phenomenal is the wine’s balance and sense of harmony. This is the kind of wine that is easy to overlook because it doesn’t ask for attention and isn’t showy. Instead, everything is simply in the right place. The finest, most silky of tannins support a core of sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which are woven together with total refinement. The eternal, nuanced finish bodes very well for the future. This is a dazzling effort from Luciano and Luca Sandrone."Wine Advocate 97 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Product #26601 (In Stock)

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!

Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Product #23795 (In Stock)
Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008

A classic from the largest and best-known Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote de Nuits, the walled vineyard of Vougeot.  Unlike many wines from this famous site, Guillon’s Vougeot is fully Grand Cru in quality – dark, rich, and super, super, long.  Cellar for another 5-8 years and drink for 20.

“From 40+ year old vines and whole cluster fermentation, fermented entirely in a small 100% new wood tank. As one would reasonably expect, this is much more defined aromatically by earth tones rather than fruit. Dark berry fruit aromas introduce exceptionally rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract levels and an opulent mouth feel yet the hugely long and slightly woody finish tightens up considerably and is quite youthfully austere despite the sap.” Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2008 Product #28344 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2008 Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2008

Perhaps the greatest vintage ever of one of Italy's benchmark super-Tuscan blends (Cabernet and Petite Verdot).  Needs time, but will take your breath away if you can wait!

"Love this. Fabulous aromas of currants and blackberries. Hints of licorice, Indian spices and dried violets. Full-bodied, ultra-fine tannins and amazing fruit, yet so vibrant, racy and balanced. The structure of Margaux with the style of Rampolla. Best ever. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. From organically grown grapes. Leave it for at least five or six years."  James Suckling 100 points

"The 2008 d’Alceo is a huge, inward, brooding wine. Plums, black cherries, camphor, incense and smoke emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. The 2008 is going to require considerable patience, but it is shaping up to be an absolute jewel. The d’Alceo is a wine of notable depth and purity, but it is very closed down at the moment. Dark red fruit, flowers, mint, spices, tar, cassis, graphite and camphor linger on the huge, structured finish. This is a towering effort from the Di Napoli family. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033."Wine Advocate 96+ points
