Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Product #27978 (In Stock)
Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008

When journalist Victor de la Serena decided it was time to make wine, rather than just write about it, he decided to do things right.  Working in the hot, dry, Spanish wine region of Manchuela, he purchased Syrah and Mourvedre cuttings from his favorite winery, the great Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and planted those along with a little of the region’s native Bobal.  High-density plantings and meticulous dropping of fruit gave him low yields and careful winemaking with just the right mix of oak delivered a wine with a little modern polish but lots of authentic gutsiness and heart.  The 2008 is ready to go now or anytime over the next 5-8 years.  Our best price ever on this bold, blockbuster, red.

"76% syrah, 13% mourvedre and 11% bobal, planted on chalky soil; aged in 85% French and 15% American oak that ranged from new to three years old. Bright purple. Spicy, highly fragrant nose features perfumed blackberry, violet and orange peel, with hints of smoke and black olive. Really showing the syrah now. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly lithe; the intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are at once taut and rich, thanks to zesty minerality. Finishes very suave and long, with fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness.” International Wine Cellar 92 points

Trimbach Riesling Reserve 2008 Product #27743 (In Stock)
Trimbach Riesling Reserve 2008 Trimbach Riesling Reserve 2008

Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010!

A stunning introduction to Alsace Riesling, this is Trimbach's "middle" level wine.  Made from 40 year old vines from a non-Grand Cru site, this delivers  more complexity and depth than the regular Yellow label bottling and points to the greatness found in Cuvee Fred and Clos St. Hune.  Not sure why it's still around - but glad it is!

"A medium-bodied Riesling, structured with firm acidity and closely knit flavors of lemon peel, Granny Smith apple, lemongrass and stone. Shows good intensity, but in a well-honed package, with a lingering, smoky finish. Needs time in the cellar. Drink now through 2030."Wine Spectator 92 points

Oddero Barolo Normale 2008 Product #27358 (In Stock)
Oddero Barolo Normale 2008 Oddero Barolo Normale 2008

Whenever I taste wine from Oddero, the word “honest” keeps cropping up in my notes.  The wines here are always clear, direct, expressions of their grapes, sites, and vintages, although the 2008 Barolo breaks the mold a bit on that last point.  In what was mostly an elegant, silky, vintage, this is a big-boned Barolo with uncommon power and depth.  Needs a little time, but then look out!

“Blueberry with raspberries and lemon rind aromas. Full body, with well-integrated tannins and a fruity finish. Subtle and polished. Needs a year or two to soften the tannins.”  James Suckling 91 points

“The 2008 Barolo is quite striking in the vintage. Black cherries, plums, spices, menthol and tobacco are some of the many notes that emerge from the glass in this big wine. This is a decidedly large-scaled entry-level Barolo, but all the elements are very much in the right place. Firm tannins frame the muscular close. This is an impressive showing among its peers. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023.” Wine Advocate 90 points

Grivault Meursault 2008 375 Ml Grivault Meursault 2008 375 Ml

If you love Grivault’s Bourgogne Blanc and have never tried his “real” Meursault -- well, it’s time.  The flavors and aromas in the Meursault are very similar to the Bourgogne but ratcheted up a notch.  Hazelnuts, almond, butter, white flower and peach aromas and flavors plus a beguiling fresh mint note.  Easy to drink now but with a good 5-10 years of development ahead of it.

Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2008 Product #27417 (In Stock)
Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2008 Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2008

Worthy’s Sophia’s Cuvee is the second wine of Axios, a Napa “cult Cabernet” producer best known for its $125 flagship Cab.  It’s been one of our best-selling Napa Cabs ever since its 2001 debut vintage earned 92 points and a place on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list.  Since then, it’s been a super-reliable bottle of Napa Cab with ripe, supple, currant, smoke and green herb flavors and a darkly fruited finish.

Like the silky 2007, this just released 2008 is a joy to drink right now and will get better over the next few years.  Right down the middle Napa Cabernet aromas, flavor, and texture with the class and depth of a $50 wine - at a much, much, better price!

"This has Cabernet Sauvignon-driven flavors of ripe summer blackberries, black currants, cassis liqueur and smoky oak. It’s dry with smooth tannins, and it shows lots of class."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008 Product #28085 (In Stock)
Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008 Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008

Tre Bicchieri 2014!  Taurasi is often called “The Barolo of the South,” not because its grape – Aglianico – tastes like Nebbiolo, but because it delivers powerful, ageworthy, wines that deliver big aromatics and fruit with intense structures that meld perfectly with food.  The trick to making a great Taurasi is to mellow Aglianico’s fierce, somewhat rustic, tannins without overwhelming the grape’s character with wood.  And that’s exactly what’s happened here.

Ripe, hand-harvested, grapes are fermented in steel and then go into small French oak barrels (mostly used) for 18 months.  To allow more time for the wine to soften without adding overt oak flavors, the wine then moves to larger, aged, oak barrels for another year and then rests in bottle for up to a year more.  The result is a wine that still has plenty of cellar potential and power, but that you can also enjoy right now with roasted meat, mature cheeses, or – my favorite – any dish laced with roasted peppers and olives.

“Lots of spicy, dried fruit and black pepper character. Full body, round and chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Traditional-style Taurasi. Better in a year or two when the tannins soften.”  James Suckling 93 points

Fowles Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2009 Product #28052 (In Stock)
Fowles Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2009 Fowles Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2009

It's been a while since we got this excited by Shiraz.  From Australia's coolest growing region, this delivers plenty of New World fruit in a sophisticated, food-friendly, frame.  Really, really, good.

"The 2008 Ladies who Shoot their Lunch Shiraz gives a very deep garnet garnet-purple color with pronounced aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice plus subtle notes of mocha, cinnamon and cardamom. Rich and full, this Shiraz is nicely balanced by crisp acid and a medium level of grainy tannins. Drink it now to 2018+."Wine Advocate 91 points

"This cool-climate Shiraz opens with a range of ripe dark berry and cherry flavors, shaded with smoky, minerally overtones that balance against pinpoint acidity and mingle nicely through the generous, focused finish."Wine Spectator 91 points

Dom Thibert Pouilly Fuisse Vignes Blanches 2008 Dom Thibert Pouilly Fuisse Vignes Blanches 2008

Everything takes a big step up in this single vineyard wine from one of Thibert’s two best sites.  The Burghound review captures this well – rich, complex, and loaded with driving minerality.  Outstanding

“Moderate wood doesn't detract from the otherwise fresh, bright and expressive nose that offers up white orchard fruit aromas, subtle spice hints and floral notes that precede rich, sappy and admirably pure flavors that possess plenty of acid buffering dry extract and excellent length as well as notably more complexity. Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008 Product #25034 (In Stock)
Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008 Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008

When Anne and Jean-Pierre Hugues purchased Ch Husson during the 2008 growing season, they decided to focus much of their energy for 2008 on the estate’s top wine, the cuvee Les Saintes Veirges. They elected to make a serious bottle of Chateauneuf, a blend of 60% old-vine Mourvedre for structure and earthy complexity and just 40% Grenache for sweetness and flesh.  Because of the high Mourvedre content, they elected to age the wine in mainly new French oak barrels.

The result in the difficult 2008 vintage is a resounding success!  Dark, dark, aromas of black raspberries, damp earth, licorice and baking spice waft from the glass.  In the mouth, definitely fuller and richer than Les Saumaudes, loaded with ripe black plum, spicy black raspberry, licorice root, violets, and earthy spice.  Firm and powerful on the finish with darkly raspy Mourvedre tannin and a touch of oak spice keeping the wine in balance.  This was very fine when I tasted it at the estate in January, but it’s already opened and gobbled up much of the wood notes in just a few months time.  Decant and enjoy with rich foods now or give it 3-4 years to soften the tannins and completely absorb the oak.

Clua Milliennium Tinto 2008 Product #27332 (In Stock)
Clua Milliennium Tinto 2008 Clua Milliennium Tinto 2008

Once again, a simply absurd amount of complexity and class for a wine from Terra Alta - but that's normal for Xavier Clua!  This is his top wine, made only in the best vintages from Garantxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir - and, even though it's only 5% of the wine, the Pinot Noir shows through in this release.  Big, ripe, aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, lavender, fresh meat, and warm stones run through the wine.  Despite the size, it's elegantly structured, almost Pinot-like, with a silky texture and juicy, fresh, acidity.  Has the length and balance to improve for 5+ years, but  already delicious, especially with grilled duck or pork.

Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2008 Product #27620 (In Stock)
Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2008 Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2008

A big, dark and powerful wine on first opening with the notes of tobacco, fresh leather, and wood spice tightly wrapped around the core of compacted black fruit.  After just 15 minutes in the glass, the wine opens beautifully with luscious black cherry and raspberry occupying center ground and the leather, spice and tobacco elements plus a bit of dried blueberry around the edges.  Finishes strong, too, with loads of perfumy fruit, leather, and earth lingering over the ripe tannins. It’s a big, muscle-bound, Brunello that needs to loosen up a bit before showing off its definition and strength fully – but then look out!  Decant for an hour or two now or cellar for 2-5 years and drink through 2023.

“A wine with layers of ripe tannins and pretty fruit. I like the sliced mushroom and dried berry character. Flavorful finish. Rich yet reserved. Drink or hold.”  James Suckling 92 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008

Burghound “Outstanding Top Value”

A great vintage for this excellent Village level red made from Jean-Michel’s oldest vines – all 50 years old or older.  As always, this delivers plenty of power and structure, but there is an extra level of ripeness and grace here as well.  This will drink nicely with decanting now and really hit its stride in another 5 years.

“From 50+ year-old vines raised in 100% new wood. This is extremely primary, in fact so much so that residual fermentation aromas are still evident though the red berry fruit appears clean and pure and is followed by impressively rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract that confers a beguiling texture to the mouth feel and renders the firm tannins almost invisible on the impeccably balanced finish. Recommended as villages level wines typically do not have this kind of completeness. Outstanding Top Value.”Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2008 Product #27679 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2008 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Amalie's Cuvee 2008

A winery to watch from just above Freedom Hill.  2008 is the third vintage of Dena Drews and Ernie Pink's labor of love we've sold and it's hardly surprising that the 2008s are the best yet.  A late release from the winery, the 2008 Amalie's Cuvee is pretty, full of fruit, and - best of all for a 2008 - is actually showing delineation and complexity already.  Yummy stuff.

"The 2008 Pinot Noir Amalie’s Cuvee offers greater depth and concentration. A captivating nose of wood smoke, allspice, brown sugar, violets, and assorted black fruits leads to a plush, moderately structured wine that will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring. This pleasurable effort will be at its best from 2012 to 2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008 Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008

Always one of my favorite wines from this address, the 2008 Lollieres flirts with Grand Cru concentration at a price that's low for a good 1er Cru.  The fruit is dark and concentrated this year - black raspberry and cherry - with accents of coffee grounds, sweet spice, smoke, and roasted meat.  At first elegant and silky in the mouth, the flavors fan out nicely on the long, ripe, and energetic finish.  Already delicious with roast duck, this will improve for 10-15 years.

“Outstanding. A touch of reduction knocks down the expressiveness of the nose somewhat but not enough to conceal the otherwise cool, ripe and pretty orchard fruit and citrus aromas. The delicious, rich, round and nicely plump flavors possess good mid-palate concentration and are set off against a racy, intense, detailed and lightly mineral-suffused finish that also displays a touch of austerity. Always Jean-Michel’s most forward, silky, and even “sexy” wine, the 2008 bursts from the glass with gorgeous red fruit and spice aromas.  Then, wonderfully giving in the mouth with fine weight and balance.  The best of these for drinking near-term, but with plenty of cellar potential.

“A different and redder but even riper fruit profile leads to rich, round and overtly generous mineral-infused middle weight plus flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration and excellent length. "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisoli Vineyard is a beautiful, if somewhat inward wine graced with exquisite finesse. Freshly cut flowers, mint, blackberries and cassis are some of the nuances that emerge from this delineated, finessed Cabernet Sauvignon. Brovia Barolo "Garblet Sue" 2008 Product #26531 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Brovia Barolo

Garblet Sue is the name of a small slice of the famous Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione.  It always gives classically structured Barolo with firm tannins, but this 2008 adds more roundness and fruit than you normally find here.  Still quite tight, but it's going to be a stunner!

“Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. A huge finish laced with iron, asphalt and crushed rocks rounds things out in style. This is a super-classic Barolo from Brovia. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.”Wine Advocate 96 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Petite Chapelle 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Petite Chapelle 2008

Burghound “Sweet Spot Outstanding”

All of Jean-Michel’s 2008s merit your attention, but if you’re only buying one, this is it.  Petite Chapelle approaches Grand Cru levels of concentration, depth, and complexity but at a price that’s very reasonable even for a 1er Cru.  And the finish this year sails on and on and on…

“From 50+ year-old vines in 100% new oak but with lower toast levels. Visible but not bothersome wood sets off bright, elegant and fresh red pinot fruit aromas trimmed in subtle wet stone notes that complement well the refined and sophisticated middle weight flavors that culminate in a cool, balanced and wonderfully long finish. This is also a lovely effort with a beguiling mouth feel of precision and tension that is clean and dry without leaning toward the commercial. Sweet Spot Outstanding.”Allen Meadows 90-92 points
