- Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Product #25534 (In Stock)
-
-
Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Red Dust Shiraz has been a favorite here for years). He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here. The 2008 Clos Robert Cab is made from a mix of purchased fruit that Bob vinifies and wine he buys from a range of suppliers across California.
The 2008 Clos Robert is terrific blend of California ripeness and Bordeaux style. The aromas and flavors lead with big red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that fill your mouth from side to side without ever becoming heavy or clumsy. Notes of dark chocolate, mocha, and sweet spice add complexity and juicy acids and fine tannins keep the wine precise and refreshing. Certainly a great match for a grilled burger, but this will stand up to strip steak and delight on its own as well. - Vina Altaba Bobal Crianza 2008 Product #26712 (In Stock)
-
-
Here's a juicy, distinctive, bottle of red from the Manchuela region in Southeastern Spain. It's 100% Bobal and full of juicy red fruit and tangy acidity with accents of blood orange, damp earth and tar. The crunchy fruit continues on the long, slighly chewy, finish. Really compelling for the money and versitile at table, too.
- Bodegas Lar De Paula Rioja Crianza 2008 Product #26896 (In Stock)
-
-
Perfectly ripe Tempranillo fruit took well to 12 months aging in French and American oak, delivering classic Crianza freshness and fruit to go with the spicy oak accents. This will get better and better over the next few years, but the elegant, sophisticated, interweaving of fruit, earth, and spice notes are very compelling right now! Great wine at table, especially with anything roasted or grilled.
"The 2008 Crianza has a lifted mulberry, sloe and bay leaf scented bouquet with a dash of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins on the entry. It is very well-balanced with a rounded, sensual finish that offers touches of pepper and burnt toast. This is a very fine Crianza. Drink now-2018."Wine Advocate 91 points
- Santa Ema Amplus One 2008 Product #27110 (In Stock)
-
-
A sophisticated, complex, and very, very, tasty blend of Chile’s own Carmenère (75%) plus dark and meaty Syrah (20%) and blue fruited and mineral Carignan, all aged in French oak for 12 months. The stylish flavors and satiny structure will have you thinking this is a $30 Bordeaux from a fine vintage (like 2009) or perhaps an unusually restrained and sophisticated Napa Meritage blend. Only your wallet needs to know differently!
“The 2008 Amplus One is made up of 75% Carmenere, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan. It displays aromas of damp earth, balsamic, herbs, blueberry, and black plum. On the palate, it reveals some elegance, savory flavors, good volume, and a bit of structure. This tasty effort will provide pleasure over the next 6 years.”Wine Advocate 91 points
“Impressive and generous, this gets going with full berry and chocolaty oak aromas. The well-structured palate bears lightly herb-tinged flavors of berry and chocolate. It finishes dry, peppery and sturdy as a cinder block.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points
“Sleek, with nice focus and purity for the vintage, as the damson plum, cherry and red currant fruit is carried by fine-grained structure. Lingering whiffs of tobacco and mineral mark the finish. Carmenère, Syrah, Carignan.”Wine Spectator 90 points

- Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2008 Product #26874 (In Stock)
-
-
Way too long since this lovely Chianti value has been in the store. Young now, but delicious after a good decant.
"Bright red. Delicate aromas of redcurrant, blueberry and violet. Fresh and refined, with lovely purity and verve to the red cherry, redcurrant and floral flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and great acid lift."International Wine Cellar 91 points
"I have been drinking the wines of Castello di Monsanto since about as long as I can remember, which is at least 20 years. The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva is a very pretty, centered wine. Dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol, cedar, game and tobacco are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. The 2008 is an understated Riserva that impresses for its length, focus and balance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023."Wine Advocate 92 points
- Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2008 Product #26710 (In Stock)
-
-
Ferrando and Carema’s co-op produce the bulk of the meager 10,000 cases of Carema each year, but Gian-Luigi Orsolani makes a tiny bit as well – making this the only other estate-grown/bottled Carema you’ll find. The name “Le Tabbie” is local dialect for the “tables” or terraces perched on Carema’s mountainsides where Nebbiolo is grown. Orsolani harvests these grapes in late October and gives them a traditional, long, fermentation and maceration before aging for 2 years in large oak barrels, 1 year in smaller barrels, and 1 last year in bottle. All the wood is neutral – just letting the wine soften rather than imparting any oak flavor.
This 2008 Carema is softer and more open than Ferrando’s, although there’s still plenty of bright acidity and chewy tannins. As in 2007, a beautiful perfume of roses, red fruits, cinnamon and licorice jumps out of the glass with a note of Barolo tar emerging with air. In the mouth there’s plenty of cherry and strawberry fruit, but the wine is very pure and transparent with accents of rose petal, tar, truffle and mountain flowers. Very perfumed on the long, elegant, finish, where there’s so much going on that you just have to take another sip. Fantastic wine, even better value. - Grivault Meursault 2008 375 Ml Product #24786 (In Stock)
-
-
If you love Grivault’s Bourgogne Blanc and have never tried his “real” Meursault -- well, it’s time. The flavors and aromas in the Meursault are very similar to the Bourgogne but ratcheted up a notch. Hazelnuts, almond, butter, white flower and peach aromas and flavors plus a beguiling fresh mint note. Easy to drink now but with a good 5-10 years of development ahead of it.
- Lundeen Syrah Rogue Valley 2008 Product #26605 (In Stock)
-
-
Not surprisingly, when an talented Willamette Valley Pinot winemaker heads south for Syrah from Oregon's Rouge Valley, you end up with something special - a New World Syrah for Pinot lovers! Aromas and flavors feature ripe and tangy blueberry and blackberry fruit accented by a dash of bitter chocolate and hint of Syrah's characteristic rare meat. The flavors are fantastically pure and the texture light and elegant, but there's plenty of intensity and depth here, too. Fine grained tannins and just the right touch of spice and meat support the long, berry-filled, finish. Just about perfect for roast pork or beef tenderloin!
- Zenato Ripassa Valpolicella 2008 Product #24963 (In Stock)
-
-
The benchmark in big, rich, Valpolicella Ripasso - a wine where Valpolicella juice has been soaked and undergone a second fermentation with the dried grape lees used for Amarone. Zenato's version ages in oak barrels to gain a little more depth, perfume, and softness. You'll find rich, layered, flavors of black cherry and dried cherry, plum, and raisin plus notes of dark chocolate and fresh espresso, all supported by bright acidity and ripe tannins. A big wine for big food and a fine value for the quality.
- David Noyes Pinot Noir Russian River 2008 Product #25869 (In Stock)
-
-
David Noyes has been around the wine business for years, starting at Ridge then working overseas before returning to the US to help launch Kunde Estate in 1989. He's been making his own wines since 2001, but sells most everything at the winery to long-time fans. It's a treat to get our hands on a little of his Russian River Pinot Noir, a blend of fruit from three vineyards that delivers loads of classic Russian River candied cherry fruit and spice. There's a little more heft and weight here than in some RR Pinots, but everything's nicely balanced and in sync. This would be outstanding with duck, salmon, or anything with mushrooms!
- Valdicava Rosso Di Montalcino 2008 Product #24127 (In Stock)
-
-
Valdicava has a nice reputation for making a Rosso that sits in a category all its own. Though 2008 was a riper vintage in the Tuscan hillsides, the Valdicava Rosso still shows poise and elegance with flashes of fruit and vigor. The nose has aromas of peppered red plum and dusty tobacco. The palate is robust with flavors of nice balsamic and dark cherries. The tannins are pronounced but elegant. While the wine could age for another 5-7 years, the riper 2008 vintage has afforded buyers a pretty "baby" Brunello to be enjoyed now!
- Guidobono Barolo Normale 2008 Product #26288 (In Stock)
-
-
A classically-styled Barolo from the elegant and accessible 2008 vintage, this shows off very typical Nebbiolo perfume of red fruits, tar, and flowers. In the mouth, the wine is graceful and delivers layered flavors of red and black cherries, truffle, rose petal and a touch of tar. The tannins are firm but very smooth, making this a fine Barolo to crack open with mushroom risotto or even beef stew tonight. Or cellar for a decade and let it get even softer and more complex.
- Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee Blanc De Noirs 2008 Product #26943 (In Stock)
-
-
One of the most beautiful wines in the store in the glass - pale salmon pink with fine bubbles. Very, very, tasty too!
"Sleek, crisp and vibrant, offering floral strawberry and sweet ginger aromas, with luscious raspberry and lemon fruit, plus accents of spice and mineral, followed by a bone-dry finish. Drink now through 2016."Wine Spectator 92 points
- Dom Thibert Pouilly Fuisse Vignes Blanches 2008 Product #24753 (In Stock)
-
-
Everything takes a big step up in this single vineyard wine from one of Thibert’s two best sites. The Burghound review captures this well – rich, complex, and loaded with driving minerality. Outstanding
“Moderate wood doesn't detract from the otherwise fresh, bright and expressive nose that offers up white orchard fruit aromas, subtle spice hints and floral notes that precede rich, sappy and admirably pure flavors that possess plenty of acid buffering dry extract and excellent length as well as notably more complexity. Sweet Spot/Outstanding”Allen Meadows 89-92 points
- Maillard Pommard La Chaniere 2008 Product #25183 (In Stock)
-
-
Pascal Maillard turned out a classic, muscular, Pommard in 2008. At this young age, the acidity is bright and ripe tannins firm, making the layers of black cherry, fresh earth, spice, and chamomile flavors very vibrant and fresh. Everything smooths out and integrates now with rich foods (duck or even lamb) and will gain more layered complexity over the next 3-4 years in cellar.
- Ferrando Carema Etichetta Bianca (Rosso) 2008 Product #26464 (In Stock)
-
-
Luigi Ferrando’s family has been making wine on the steep slopes surrounding their village of Carema since about 1900, and his Carema Etichetta Bianca has been considered the region’s flagship red for 30 years or more. “Beautiful” is the word I keep coming back to for this elegant, complex, wine that’s full of fresh mountain flowers, cherry blossom, lavender, camphor and fresh cut hay notes. Plenty of ripe cherry and strawberry fruit, too, and masses of silky tannins and juicy acidity. Best in 4 years or so, but delicious now if you open the bottle, pour a little out, and let it breath for an hour or so. Very limited.
“Ferrando is a great source for interesting and intriguing wines that showcase the potential of Nebbiolo in Carema, a tiny appellation in northern Piedmont. The 2008 Carema Etichetta Bianca wafts from the glass with sweet dried cherries, tobacco, sweet herbs and crushed flowers. A mid-weight, delicate wine, the 2008 is quite typical of these hillside vineyards. In 2008 the acidity is a bit on the high side, which readers should keep in mind when considering food pairings. This is a gorgeous wine from Ferrando. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.”Wine Advocate 92 points
- Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008 Product #25034 (In Stock)
-
-
When Anne and Jean-Pierre Hugues purchased Ch Husson during the 2008 growing season, they decided to focus much of their energy for 2008 on the estate’s top wine, the cuvee Les Saintes Veirges. They elected to make a serious bottle of Chateauneuf, a blend of 60% old-vine Mourvedre for structure and earthy complexity and just 40% Grenache for sweetness and flesh. Because of the high Mourvedre content, they elected to age the wine in mainly new French oak barrels.
The result in the difficult 2008 vintage is a resounding success! Dark, dark, aromas of black raspberries, damp earth, licorice and baking spice waft from the glass. In the mouth, definitely fuller and richer than Les Saumaudes, loaded with ripe black plum, spicy black raspberry, licorice root, violets, and earthy spice. Firm and powerful on the finish with darkly raspy Mourvedre tannin and a touch of oak spice keeping the wine in balance. This was very fine when I tasted it at the estate in January, but it’s already opened and gobbled up much of the wood notes in just a few months time. Decant and enjoy with rich foods now or give it 3-4 years to soften the tannins and completely absorb the oak.
- Brovia Barolo "Brovia" 2008 Product #26225 (In Stock)
-
-
Note: Mixed case prices for this wine and other Brovia Crus will not show on your web receipt. We will adjust your pricing when the wines are pulled and rung in-store!
Wine Advocate reported a couple of years ago: “For reasons I can't quite understand Brovia remains incredibly overlooked considering the quality of the juice they put in the bottle. In recent years Brovia has been making terrific wines in an enlightened traditional style that is immensely appealing. The estate favors long fermentations. The single-vineyard Barolos are aged in French oak casks, while the Barolo (made from young vines) is aged in Slavonian oak. Simply put, Brovia is on fire. Readers won't want to miss out on these exceptional wines.”
“The 2008 Barolo is pure class. Tobacco, incense, crushed rocks and dried flowers fuse into a juicy, expressive core of dark fruit. The 2008 stands out for its balance and overall sense of harmony. Brovia’s straight Barolo is at once highly nuanced – which makes it approachable young – yet also structured and powerful, especially on the finish. Over the last few years this has been one of the very best entry-level Baroli. The Barolo is essentially a blend of all of Brovia’s single-vineyard wines and is aged in Slavonian cask. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.”Wine Advocate 91 points

-
We can't believe the quality and concentration in this classic Amarone at this price!
"This shows good grip, derived from the burly tannins and snappy sun-dried fruitlike acidity, layering dark, ripe berry and black cherry fruit with hints of tobacco and cigar box. Drink now through 2023. 800 cases made."
