Ch La Matheline Bordeaux Superieur 2009 Product #28949 (In Stock)
Ch La Matheline Bordeaux Superieur 2009 Ch La Matheline Bordeaux Superieur 2009

Ch la Metheline is a small, even obscure, estate located just outside the boundaries of Fronsac on Bordeaux’s “Right Bank,” just a short distance northwest of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol.  This is Merlot country where the Wine Spectator 96 point 2009 vintage turned out reds that are “Rich and powerful yet round and friendly, with velvety texture and loads of fruit…don't overlook Fronsac and Castillon.”

2009 la Mentheline is very much in this mold.  It’s 80% Merlot with 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure) and Cabernet Franc (for perfume).  The ripe fruit clearly saw some time in barrel (probably not new) for added richness and complexity.  It’s a big wine (very 2009, in fact) with dark red currant, cherry and raspberry fruit at the core and accents of cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate and spice.  With a little air, a floral/herbal note emerges on top for even more charm.  The texture and length here belong to a much more expensive wine, and you’ll take great pleasure in drinking this now with lamb or roast beef and keep on enjoying it over the next 5 years or so.  Impressive wine, impressive package, and a very impressive price!

Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009 Product #28094 (In Stock)
Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009 Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009

"The 2009 Contraste red is a Douro blend, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz and Sousao, aged 70% in 3rd year barriques of French oak. This is never terribly concentrated, but it is quite luscious this year. Despite the modest oak treatment, it still has a certain creamy nuance on opening. But you pay the price of admission here for the flavorful fruit. Softly textured, sexy, ripe and easily approachable, with moderate tannins, this goes down easy and just plain tastes great. Yet, it does have character, too; it just needs an hour of air to show it. With air, some herbal nuances pop up, it comes together well, becomes silkier and displays increasingly fine balance. I liked this more and more, despite a relatively straightforward beginning. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 89 points

Ch Unang Ventoux 2009 Product #28181 (In Stock)
Ch Unang Ventoux 2009 Ch Unang Ventoux 2009

Ventoux is usually a source for ripe, if rustic, reds and fleshy whites.  But, James King's vineyards running up and down steep sloped hillsides and surrounded by forest are a touch cooler than most and give wines of much more freshness, class, and finesse than normally found here.  His tank-raised Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%) and Carignan blend is a beauty.  Raspberry, strawberry, red licorice, and plum notes jump from the glass and coat your palate.  The expansive juicy fruit is complemented by a touch of damp earth and warm stone minerality.  Very pure and refreshing from first glass to last.

Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc 2009 Product #27821 (In Stock)
Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc 2009 Ch Malmaison Moulis En Medoc 2009

Another great performance for this two-time Wine Spectator Top 100 estate in Moulis-en-Medoc, on the Left Bank just north of Margaux.  Much richer, riper, and softer than the 2005 and 2006 we featured in the past, this is bursting with blackberry and black currant fruit, cedar, tobacco, fresh herb and more.  A coffee/mocha note starts in the middle and expands on the plush, lingering, finish.  Great value in all-around Bordeaux to drink or hold.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Product #28306 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009

Simply the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!   A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) all aged in neutral oak perfectly express the terroir of Philippe’s rocky vineyards and the vintage’s warmth and ripeness. Big aromas of black raspberry, licorice, fresh earth, and roasted meat carry through on the mouth coating palate where hints of lavender and violet emerge.  The focused, generous, flavors push through the explosive finish where firm tannins provide support and raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, seared beef, and licorice flavors go on and on.

With age this  just gets better and better - a magnum of 2005 Philippe served us last year resembled and was flat out better than the 2005 Beaucastel on the same table.  Grab a case or so of regular bottles, but treat yourself to a few magnums, too.  An utterly magnificent bottle of gutsy Rhone red now and for 15+ years to come.

Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009 Product #28383 (In Stock)
Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009 Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009

Balia di Zola is a labor of love for a husband and wife team in Romagna.  They farm 40-year-old Sangiovese vines that they recovered when they formed the estate in 1999.  We flipped for this gutsy, deeply flavored, Sangiovese as soon as we tasted it.  Aromas of dark, ripe blackberries, and leafy forest floor let you know this is a serious Sangiovese.  On the palate, it's got plenty of structure and food-friendly acidity, with enough depth to stand up to gutsy food.  A gem to enjoy with rich food or anything grilled.

Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Product #27116 (In Stock)
Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Cedro Do Noval Tinto Duriense 2009 Product #28898 (In Stock)
Cedro Do Noval Tinto Duriense 2009 Cedro Do Noval Tinto Duriense 2009

A big, ripe, powerful wine that could probably age for 10+ years - but I'd just pop one open the next time you fire up the grill and get a steak sizzling.

"The 2009 CEDRO DO NOVAL is 50% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 10% Syrah (just a dollop this year) and 10% Tinta Roriz. It is “Duriense” instead of Douro because of the Syrah. In Noval’s lineup, this is quickly becoming the one to grab, because the quality is high and the price is low. It is becoming a repetitive overachiever. Despite containing only 10% Syrah, it has that trademark Syrah earthiness on the nose. Tightly wound, crisp and earthy, it is beautifully wrought and quite ageworthy. Juicy and remarkably flavorful on the finish, thanks to the acidity, it is a fine achievement at this price level and one of the better values in the vintage. The only problem for Noval is that many will wonder why they should trade up to the winery’s prestige wines at several times the Cedro’s price. On current tastes, I won’t suprised if many think this is the equal of Noval’s pricier wines and at various times in their development I thought so, too, although that is certainly not the final answer. With a few years passage of time, the equation will no doubt change and they may separate more. There isn’t much question about one thing, however—this is a fine value, a big, relatively deep and powerful Cedro that doesn’t disappoint. The alcohol does sometimes pop its head up (only 14% listed, though) and at other times is not at all noticeable. There were 4,000 cases produced. Drink 2013-2022."Wine Advocate 92 points

Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Silvanus 2009 Product #27932 (In Stock)
Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Silvanus 2009 Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Silvanus 2009

A stunning bottle of Ribera del Duero that leaves you wondering - why is so much Tempranlillo from this great region so fat, flabby and insipid?  The 2009 Silvanus is anything but that!  It's an intense, focused, highly mineral wine that delivers plenty of dark fruit, too.  Accents of roasted meat right out of the oven, smoky herb, black plum and dark chocolate add complexity and the long, chewy, mouthwatering, finish keeps you coming back for more. Impressive and "serious" at some level, but fun, too.

Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Product #27658 (In Stock)
Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009

The “Il Molino de Grace” name refers to a 19th Century windmill on the Grace property and suggests how Frank and Tim Grace seek to keep their wines firmly anchored in Tuscan tradition.  Their 2009 Chianti Classico embraces Sangiovese’s lighter, prettier, style of fruit and concentration over the darker, more oak-influenced, styles more common today.  I love the bright and cheerful fruit and hints of violet here, but there’s plenty of stuffing and intensity, too.

“Violet, black currant, black cherry, cedar and black tea flavors hold court in this sleek, supple red, with a lingering spicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2020.”Wine Spectator 90 points

“The Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese and offers pleasant aromas of dried cherries and earth. It is soft and velvet smooth with good density of sweet red fruit on the palate. Aged for 11 months in stainless steel, French barriques and tonneaux, it shows good acidity and overall structure with a long finish.”i-Wine Review 90 points

Celler Cecilio Negre Priorat 2009 Product #25693 (In Stock)
Celler Cecilio Negre Priorat 2009 Celler Cecilio Negre Priorat 2009

Always rich and complex, Negre has just a touch more volume, intensity, and power in the warm 2009 vintage.  There’s plenty of generous fruit and spice here, but it’s the stony mineral character that makes it special.  Drink it now with roasted or grilled meat while a few bottles gain more complexity and definition in cellar for a decade.

“Celler Cecilio is the oldest registered winery in Priorat. The 2009 Negre is the same blend as the 2008 (50% Garnacha, 30% Carinena, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) and received the identical elevage (fermented with native yeasts and aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak). Reflecting the better vintage, it offers up a racy bouquet of cherry blossoms, incense, black cherry, black raspberry, and lavender. More structured and concentrated than the 2008, it will benefit from 1-2 years of additional bottle age and provide enjoyment through 2019.”Wine Advocate 91 points

Josep Serra Monsant Octonia Negre 2009 Product #28095 (In Stock)
Josep Serra Monsant Octonia Negre 2009 Josep Serra Monsant Octonia Negre 2009

For the first release of his own wine, Octonia, well-known Priorat and Monsant consulting winemaker Josep Serra spare no effort or expense.  The fruit is from 70 year-old vines growing in Monsant, just outside Priorat.  A blend of 50% Garnacha Fina, 35% Garnacha Peluda (“Hairy Grenache”), and 15% Mazuelo ferments and ages in 400 liter French oak barrels sourced from the same coopers used by Haut Brion in Bordeaux.  After 16 months aging, the wine is bottled without fining and filtration.

The result is a blockbuster, the most exciting wine from Monsant I can ever recall tasting.  Big, generous, aromas of black fruit, roasted meat, pan juices and smoke open the show.  The savory, meaty, notes run through the deep, powerful, palate of black plum, blackberry, and black raspberry fruit.  A broad streak of hot stone minerality comes up to support the fruit and big flavors of blackberry, blood orange, roasted meat, and iron explode on the long, intense, finish.  With air, the roasted meat notes clarify and the wine gains even more purity of luscious fruit and warming spice and stone.  Decant and drink now or cellar for 10 years.  A simply brilliant wine, but very limited.

50% Off - While it Lasts!  Long-lived wines like Mondavi’s top Reserve Cabernet are especially fun to have in half-bottles.  Not only are they convenient for times you don’t want to crack a full bottle, they develop just a tad faster, giving you aged complexity with a shorter wait.  This is an exceptionally good release for this wine and a crazy good price – 50% off the normal half-bottle price.  If you buy 2 half bottles, you’ll pay less than the best price we can find anywhere for a full 750ml!

“78% To Kalon fruit; as of the 2011 vintage, this wine will say To Kalon on the label; blended with 8.3% cabernet franc and 3.5% petit verdot. Saturated red-ruby. Currant, graphite, wild herbs, cedar and sexy oak on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. A broad and very elegant midweight (I would not have guessed that it was carrying 15.2% alcohol), with lively cassis and floral flavors burnished by mellow oak tones. Lovely fine-grained, long cabernet with excellent lift."International Wine Cellar 94 points

“Mondavi’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is sumptuous and beautiful. Plums, mocha, cloves and pencil shavings are all woven together in this gorgeous, large-scaled Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are in the right place. Silky, nuanced tannins frame the voluptuous, caressing finish. A wine of centeredness and gorgeous precision, the 2009 is a true standout. The tannins need a few years to soften, but once that starts to happen, the 2009 should enjoy a long life. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.” Wine Advocate 94 points

An absolutely lovey example of Pinot Noir from the flinty hills of Sancerre, all the better for having had a couple of extra years in bottle to mellow and unfold.  Cool, elegant, aromas of dark red cherry, crushed raspberry and wild strawberry swirl in the glass, accented by touches of cocoa, warm stone and spice.  Very pure and bright on entry before the black and red berry fruit fans out across your palate and notes of fresh flowers, bitter chocolate, baking spice, and baked strawberry add complexity and interest.  On the finish, pie cherry acidity and fine, supple, tannins provide support as fruit, spice, and mineral flavors linger on.  Great wine to sip or enjoy with all kinds of food – even Easter lamb or ham!

Calder Charbono Napa 2009 Product #27616 (In Stock)
Calder Charbono Napa 2009 Calder Charbono Napa 2009

Charbono arrived in the US from France in the 1880s and was very popular at one time.  Now fewer than 70 acres remain and it's dying out quickly in France, too. That's too bad, because as this wine from 40 year-old Napa vines shows, it can make a complex, meaty, wine that's fully ripe at just 13% abv.  Fans of Rhone reds - especially those that get a little barnyardy - will love the complex, earthy aromas and flavors that complement the black fruit at the wine's core.  The black raspberry fruit pumps on to the finish with loads of earthy barnyard complexity.

Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 Product #28279 (In Stock)
Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009

This 2009 Barbaresco is so delicious right now that it will be hard to wait until its full flowering in 5 years or so.  Good reason to grab more than a few bottles now!  A fantastic “normale” Barbaresco at a stellar price.

"Produttori del Barbaresco is like that long-lost friend who always picks up a lively conversation no matter how many years have passed since your last meeting. It’s the ultimate fallback wine: It’s never intimidating or awkward. It’s always a pleasure to drink. The 2009 Barbaresco shows personality and good cheer with a good dose of dried fruit and savory spice. There are some elements that make the wine seem more aged than it really is. Cured meat and old leather emerge. But then the wine suddenly surprises you with an entourage of Nebbiolo-based tones like dried mint and licorice that tell you it still has loads of life within. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.”Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright cherry, strawberry, floral, licorice and herbal aromas and flavors highlight this fragrant, elegant red, which is silky and pure, with fine ripe tannins for support. Shows excellent length, with an aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2015 through 2028.”Wine Spectator 93 points

An utterly compelling Barolo from 30-50 year old vines, aged 80% in classic large cask and 20% in small barrel (used) for polish and softness.  Blended from 5 top vineyards in Barolo, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello, this outshines many much higher priced 2009 Barolo.  It will age easily for a decade+, but it's in the window right now with rich foods or truffles.

"Damilano's 2009 Barolo Lecinquevigne boasts serious depth and intensity. Dark cherry, plum, spices, mocha, menthol, tar and licorice meld together in a rich, powerful, intense entry-level wine. This is a fabulous effort for the year. The 2009 shows great intensity of color and fruit, with beautifully balanced, harmonious tannins. All in all, this is a terrific showing."  Antonio Galloni 91 points

"Opaque ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense and cola, along with a sexy floral nuance and a touch of cracked pepper. Juicy, sweet and expansive, offering vibrant cherry and blackberry flavors and a velvety texture. Finishes with impressive clarity and lift, leaving a candied violet note behind."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The Crianzas are raised in new American oak for around 14 months and Jesus explained that the grapes were cooled to 6 degrees Centigrade for the 2009 Vina Sastre Crianza. It offers a fragrant, floral bouquet of kirsch, loganberry and cranberry, with fine definition and well-integrated oak. There is a touch of chalk dust that emerges after a few moments in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, crisp acidity and a superb citric freshness on the finish: hints of orange peel and tangerine lingering on the aftertaste. This is an understated yet paradoxically flavorsome Crianza. Drink 2013-2019."Wine Advocate 92 points

Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2009 Product #27924 (In Stock)
Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2009 Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2009

Ferrando and Carema’s co-op produce the bulk of the meager 10,000 cases of Carema each year, but Gian-Luigi Orsolani makes a tiny bit as well – making this the only other estate-grown/bottled Carema you’ll find.  The name “Le Tabbie” is local dialect for the “tables” or terraces perched on Carema’s mountainsides where Nebbiolo is grown.  Orsolani harvests these grapes in late October and gives them a traditional, long, fermentation and maceration before aging for 2 years in large oak barrels, 1 year in smaller barrels, and 1 last year in bottle.  All the wood is neutral – just letting the wine soften rather than imparting any oak flavor.

This 2009 Carema is more ripe and generous than the lovely 2008, lthough there’s still plenty of bright acidity and chewy tannins.  A beautiful perfume of roses, red fruits, cinnamon and licorice jumps out of the glass with a note of Barolo tar emerging with air.  In the mouth there’s plenty of cherry and strawberry fruit, but the wine is very pure and transparent with accents of rose petal, tar, truffle and mountain flowers.  Very perfumed on the long, elegant, finish, where there’s so much going on that you just have to take another sip.  Fantastic wine, even better value.
