A rare 2009 Bordeaux that delighted both America’s Robert Parker and Britan’s Jancis Robinson on release and has just gotten better since.  It's from 35 year-old vines growing on classic Bordeaux gravel soils just outside Pauillac and St. Julien, aged in tank (15%) and oak (85%) including about 50% new French oak.  The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and power), 45% Merlot (for body and fruit) and 5% Petit Verdot (color, perfume), all from sustainably farmed 35 year-old vines.  Both British critic Jancis Robinson (17/20 points) and American Robert Parker (90 points, Sleeper of the Vintage") loved it on release, but it's even better now - as you'll see from James Suckling's just released review. A rich, satisfying, Bordeaux to drink right now with beef and lamb or hold through 2024.

"This is the posh sister to Larose-Trintaudon from vineyards in Arcins. Healthy crimson. Very sophisticated, swish perfume. Tastes as though an enormous amount of attention has been lavished on this wine. Top-quality oak for a start and really concentrated fruit. Lively and ripe. "A sleeper of the vintage and impressive is their cuvee called Larose Perganson, which in 2009 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the silkiness of its sibling, but is fuller-bodied, with more layers of fruit and glycerin and a heady finish (14.3% alcohol). It is opulent and pure, with loads of cassis, black raspberry and licorice notes backed up with some subtle oak. Drink it over the next decade."Wine Advocate 90 points

From the estate the created the LBV style comes a true "baby Vintage Port" - made from the same grapes, grown in the estate's own vineyard, trod by food, but given 2 extra years in barrel to deliver perfect enjoyment on release.  Very much in the Quinta do Noval style, with masses of dark plum, blackberry, and black raspberry fruit accented by a touch of bitter chocolate that are lifted by impeccable acidity and firm, almost crisp, tannins.  A dose of melted licorice emerges on the long, juicy finish.  Yummy.

Winemaker Matthias Wimmer and estate owner Christian Raimont make this stunner from certified organic Grenache (55%) and Syrah (45%) grapes grown at the foot of the Alpilles mountains in central Provence.  The low yield grapes (about 33% of the legal maximum) ferments slowly in cement vat for 18 days before aging 12 months in barrel and 6 more back in concrete before bottling. 

You know the 2009 Lea is powerful from first sight of the intense, glass-staining, purple/black color.  The aromas are massive, too, with scents of dark blueberry, black plum, black currant, and smoky meat jumping from the glass.  With air, notes of licorice, black olive and crushed Provençal herb emerge and carry over to the rich, high-impact, palate to accent flavors of roasted black fruit, toasted spice, and meat juices.  The flavors build on the back-palate before exploding on the long, powerful, finish where firm tannins lie underneath pulsating flavors of dark fruit, roasting meat, licorice, and herb.  Remarkably fresh and even refreshing for all the richness, this is already a fine companion for grilled lamb or herb-rubbed pork and will comfort with cassoulet for years to come.

This is Finca Sobreno’s top wine, all coming from 80 year-old, dry farmed, Tinto de Toro vines on the estate’s main property.  The old vines yield a tiny amount of intensely ripe and powerful grapes and a wine that’s almost too full of sweet, dark, black fruit, spice, and richly textured tannins.  To bring the wine together requires 18 months aging in all new French oak barrels, which smooths off rough edges, locks in color, and adds an extra layer of smoky spice.  Two more years in bottle allows the wood to integrate and more earthy complexity to develop.

The 2009 is a big wine, but light on its feet and not at all overpowering.  Red and black fruit are at the wine’s core with notes of savory herb and sandalwood underneath and sweet spice and smoke on top.  Supple, round, and very long, this is in prime drinking condition now – try it with grilled lamb! – but can certainly continue to improve through 2021.

The “teeth of the dog” vineyard lies in the southern part of St. Aubin, on the border with Puligny-Montrachet and not far from Montrachet.  The five separate vineyard parcels (about 4 acres total) were planted at different times, with the oldest vines dating from 1947 and 1964.  Vinified in oak (20% new) with 10 months on the lees.

I under-estimated this wine a few years ago – it’s very impressive now and will only get better.  Aromas of rich orchard fruit, iodine, and fresh chervil lead to rich golden fruit, butter, caramel, and salty mineral flavors.  Generous but still very precise, this finishes long and lovely with lingering pineapple, hazelnut, and spice flavors lingering on and on.  A definite “buy” for now and the next 10+ years.

Usually my personal favorite of the line-up (although 2007 Fonseca is pretty impressive!), the 2009 Taylor Fladgate delivers the Bordeaux-like elegance and class it's known for. On the nose black fruit with notes of raspberry and plum and hints of graphite and cedar. The flavors stay black with currant and cherry appearing plus dark licorice root, apple skin, and more graphite. The deep flavors stay over top of the firm, grippy, mouth-coating tannins that keep everything focused and almost elegant (if such a big wine can be elegant). Love it.

"Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark."Wine Advocate 95 points

If Croft is the Aussie Shiraz of the line, then Fonseca is the Napa Cabernet. The story here is all about power - powerful aromatics, powerful palate, powerful tannins. Big aromas feature dark black currant and plum accented by notes of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee with citrus and menthol overtones. In the mouth, firm and packed with muscular black fruit, dark chocolate, and licorice root flavors. As the velvet cloaked tannins well up on the finish, a beautiful floral note emerges as well. This probably isn't as fine as the 2007, but it's outstanding nonetheless!

"The Fonseca 2009 has a very ripe sweet prune and fig-tinged bouquet that is very precocious. Touches of smoke, raisin and dark plum begin to emerge with time, though it needs to evolve a little more cohesion. The compact soils and south/southest-facing exposure of this site in Serralunga helped Ca' Mia retain fine freshness even as it ripened into plush, velvety, richness. The first to sell out of the 2009s and likely to be the first 2009 gone, too.

"In this hot vintage the 2009 Barolo Ca' Mia appears to have handled the weather best of all the wines in the range, which isn't that much of a shock, considering that the more compact soils of Serralunga are at an advantage in warmer years. Firm tannins provide the backdrop for a serious core of dark red fruit, flowers, iron, tar and licorice, all of which seem to literally jump out of the glass. The ethereal 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. sees fruit sourced from older vines from vineyards located almost at the bull’s eye center of the appellation, roughly equidistant between Montalcino and Tavernelle. Under 3,000 bottles were produced. Like the base Brunello, this wine first goes into cement vats to undergo fermentation and this step has added much in terms of the wine’s aromatic profile.
