Lorca Monastrell 2009 Lorca Monastrell 2009

The DO of Bullas, higher up than Jumilla with a bigger contrast in daytime vs. nighttime temperatures and a bit more freshness in the wines.

"The DO of Bullas has the highest elevation Monastrell vines in Spain, more so than neighboring Jumilla, providing a bigger contrast in daytime vs. nighttime temperatures. The purple/black 2009 Lorca Monastrell offers up intriguing aromas of underbrush, brier, game, and blueberry. In the glass it exhibits ample spicy fruit, a bit of underlying structure, and 1-2 years of aging potential. Drink this crowd-pleaser through 2019."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Buil & Giné Montsant 17XI 2009 Buil & Giné Montsant 17XI 2009

Lovely blueberry and ripe blackberry fruit with just a touch of spice here in a wine that's easy enough to drink solo but that will work well with robust roasted and grilled foods.

"Made from a blend of garnacha, carinena and tempranillo that was aged for six months in French and American oak. Opaque ruby. Smoke-accented aromas of dark berries and dried flowers, with a spicy nuance building in the glass. Youthfully taut on entry, then fleshier in the middle, offering ripe dark fruit flavors and a hint of cracked pepper. Picks up brighter red fruits on the long, tangy finish."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Fowles Are You Game Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Product #27987 (In Stock)
Fowles Are You Game Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Fowles Are You Game Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

From Victoria, Australia's coolest growing region, the Fowles family crafts food friendly wines that show especially well with the game Matt Fowles likes to bring home from the outback. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon shows off aromas of cassis, black cherry, and blackberry with a touch of Australia's classic eucalyptus and menthol on top. Bright red currant and plum flavors get accents of spice and keep on pumping over chewy tannins.  A fine burger companion, although it will certainly work with venison or, possibly, kangaroo.

Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009 Product #28104 (In Stock)
Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009 Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009

This is the kind of ripe, hearty, well-structured, red that the rocky vineyards of Rousillon should turn out by the truckload, but somehow rarely do.  Certainly, the grapes that thrive in this dry heat – Grenache, Syrah, and especially Carignon – are not easy to tame, especially in ill-kempt fields full of shaggy vines groaning under the weight of humongous crop loads.

Etienne Montes and his friend/consulting winemaker, the Rhone’s Jean-Luc Colombo, succeed by taking a different path.  Where others use carbonic maceration, new oak barrels, or other tricks to soften Rousillon’s rustic edges, Montes simply works day after day in the vineyards to grow perfectly ripe grapes.  As the harvest nears, he prowls his three plots – including the largest full of 50 year old vines and the next largest planted 70 years ago – tasting, tasting, and tasting grapes.  When he can feel the ripeness in his mouth, the softness of tannin, the maturity of minerality – that’s when Montes starts to make wine.

"Years ago I met Etienne Montes when he first began running his family’s vineyard holdings called La Casenove. Montes gave up a career as a photo journalist to guide this domaine into the upper-echelon of Roussillon producers. The stunning 2009 La Garrigue (40% Carignan, 40% Syrah and 20% Grenache aged 7 months in tank) is a terrific example of how much wine one can buy for under $20 a bottle. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by notes of cassis, blackberries, lavender, licorice, pepper and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and heady, this beauty is capable of drinking well for 5-6 more years. However, as with most of these wines, what’s the point of waiting?”Wine Advocate 92 points

Ch Unang Ventoux 2009 Ch Unang Ventoux 2009

Ventoux is usually a source for ripe, if rustic, reds and fleshy whites.  But, James King's vineyards running up and down steep sloped hillsides and surrounded by forest are a touch cooler than most and give wines of much more freshness, class, and finesse than normally found here.  His tank-raised Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%) and Carignan blend is a beauty.  Raspberry, strawberry, red licorice, and plum notes jump from the glass and coat your palate.  The expansive juicy fruit is complemented by a touch of damp earth and warm stone minerality.  Very pure and refreshing from first glass to last.

Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009 Product #28094 (In Stock)
Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009 Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009

"The 2009 Contraste red is a Douro blend, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz and Sousao, aged 70% in 3rd year barriques of French oak. This is never terribly concentrated, but it is quite luscious this year. Despite the modest oak treatment, it still has a certain creamy nuance on opening. But you pay the price of admission here for the flavorful fruit. Softly textured, sexy, ripe and easily approachable, with moderate tannins, this goes down easy and just plain tastes great. Yet, it does have character, too; it just needs an hour of air to show it. With air, some herbal nuances pop up, it comes together well, becomes silkier and displays increasingly fine balance. I liked this more and more, despite a relatively straightforward beginning. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 89 points

Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009 Product #26356 (In Stock)
Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009 Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2009

Hard to believe, but the best selling $20 Pinot in the store is even better in 2009 than before.  Once again, a fairly lightly colored, elegant, bottle of Oregon Pinot from the Umpqua Valley. Lovely aromas of berries, mushroom and roses lead to a silky, vibrant, mouthful of fresh strawberries, crunchy cherries and fresh turned earth.  Just a tad more depth and smoke than the fine 2008 and ready to drink now.

"Light red. Zesty redcurrant and cherry aromas are deepened by smoky spices and cola. Lively and sharply focused, offering nervy red berry flavors and silky texture. The spiciness repeats on the energetic finish, which leaves a bitter cherry note behind."International Wine Cellar 88 points

Developed as a hommage to very old-fashioned white Burgundy - from the days before Chardonnay was the dominant grape - this is an exotic blend of 55% Pinot Gris, 40% Pinot Blanc, and 5% Aligote all aged in new French oak.  Wild aromas of stone fruit, orange zest, lemon, and smoky oak that gets spicier with air.  It's rich and complex on the palate with flavors of juicy nectarine, pear, and candied citrus with baking spice notes that turn smoky on the long, sweetly fruited, finish.  Brilliant with rich, buttery, poultry or shellfish - and a steal at almost half off!

An absolutely lovey example of Pinot Noir from the flinty hills of Sancerre, all the better for having had a couple of extra years in bottle to mellow and unfold.  Cool, elegant, aromas of dark red cherry, crushed raspberry and wild strawberry swirl in the glass, accented by touches of cocoa, warm stone and spice.  Very pure and bright on entry before the black and red berry fruit fans out across your palate and notes of fresh flowers, bitter chocolate, baking spice, and baked strawberry add complexity and interest.  On the finish, pie cherry acidity and fine, supple, tannins provide support as fruit, spice, and mineral flavors linger on.  Great wine to sip or enjoy with all kinds of food – even Easter lamb or ham!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2009

Simply the best value in robust Rhone red wine we have in the store now - a wine that blows away most $30-$50 "luxury" Gigondas and a whole lot of Chateauneuf!   A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) all aged in neutral oak perfectly express the terroir of Philippe’s rocky vineyards and the vintage’s warmth and ripeness. Big aromas of black raspberry, licorice, fresh earth, and roasted meat carry through on the mouth coating palate where hints of lavender and violet emerge.  The focused, generous, flavors push through the explosive finish where firm tannins provide support and raspberry, black cherry, garrigue, seared beef, and licorice flavors go on and on.

With age this  just gets better and better - a magnum of 2005 Philippe served us last year resembled and was flat out better than the 2005 Beaucastel on the same table.  Grab a case or so of regular bottles, but treat yourself to a few magnums, too.  An utterly magnificent bottle of gutsy Rhone red now and for 15+ years to come.

Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Product #27658 (In Stock)
Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009 Il Molino Chianti Classico 2009

The “Il Molino de Grace” name refers to a 19th Century windmill on the Grace property and suggests how Frank and Tim Grace seek to keep their wines firmly anchored in Tuscan tradition.  Their 2009 Chianti Classico embraces Sangiovese’s lighter, prettier, style of fruit and concentration over the darker, more oak-influenced, styles more common today.  I love the bright and cheerful fruit and hints of violet here, but there’s plenty of stuffing and intensity, too.

“Violet, black currant, black cherry, cedar and black tea flavors hold court in this sleek, supple red, with a lingering spicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2020.”Wine Spectator 90 points

“The Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese and offers pleasant aromas of dried cherries and earth. It is soft and velvet smooth with good density of sweet red fruit on the palate. Aged for 11 months in stainless steel, French barriques and tonneaux, it shows good acidity and overall structure with a long finish.”i-Wine Review 90 points

Another great performance for this two-time Wine Spectator Top 100 estate in Moulis-en-Medoc, on the Left Bank just north of Margaux.  Much richer, riper, and softer than the 2005 and 2006 we featured in the past, this is bursting with blackberry and black currant fruit, cedar, tobacco, fresh herb and more.  A coffee/mocha note starts in the middle and expands on the plush, lingering, finish.  Great value in all-around Bordeaux to drink or hold.

Lovely wine and great value.

"Very traditional-old-style Bordeaux from the Milhade family, who make the well-known generic Bordeaux that can live for 20+ years, Recougne. The 2009 Lyonnat, from the satellite appellation of Lussac St.-Emilion, is a blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes of cedar wood, roasted herbs, loamy earth and soil undertones in addition to abundant black cherry and black currant fruit jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, earthy style of wine that saturates the palate and should drink well for up to a decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

Finca Sobreno Especial 2009 Finca Sobreno Especial 2009

A majestic Tempranillo from Toro from 50+ year-old vines.  Rich, powerful, and redolent of traditional American oak.

"Deeply pitched aromas of blackberry, violet, smoky oak and mocha. Then sweet, broad and lush on the palate, with explosive dark berry flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and a floral nuance. Finishes with big, broad, supple tannins and superb length. This exotic, large-scaled wine shows surprising energy and focus for its heft."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2009 Finca Sobreno Reserva – Seleccion Especiale is a blend of the estate’s best vineyard (over 50 years in age) and sees half the fruit aged in 14 months in new American oak, the remainder in used oak. It has a lifted floral bouquet of dark berries, briary and dried violets that is well-defined and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry of dark cherries, balsamic, a hint of orange peel and cloves. There is good structure and focus present here, with a clean fresh, focused finish. It is very fine and very elegant for a Toro red. Drink now-2019+"Wine Advocate 93 points

Vinedos De Ithaca Akyles Priorat 2009 Product #26419 (In Stock)
Vinedos De Ithaca Akyles Priorat 2009 Vinedos De Ithaca Akyles Priorat 2009

Silvia Puig makes Akyles with the fruit of yonger vines growing on steeply sloped vineyards covered in Priorat’s distinctive shattered red and black slate called “llicorella.”  It’s a blend of 45% Garnatxa Negre and Garnatxa Peluda (“hairy Grenache”) plus 40% Carinena and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.  The 2009 aged for 10 months in 400 liter used French oak barrels and has now had nearly 3 years in bottle to soften and open up.

Now the layered aromas of lavender, violets, and purple plum and berry fruit burst from the glass.  In the mouth, the texture and shape of the wine are exiting, with mouthcoating, lush, fruit over notes of melted rock, slate, bitter chocolate and just a hint of mint.  While the fruit is sweet and ripe, the acidity and minerality make this a savory wine of great focus and detail.  The bright acids and supple tannins flow all the way to the end where a bitter chocolate note lingers.  The kind of “serious” wine that’s fun to drink and makes you come back again and again.

"Glass-staining ruby. Spicy cherry, blackberry and cracked pepper on the nose, with a subtle incense quality adding complexity. Bright and energetic for the vintage, owing to sharply focused dark berry and floral pastille flavors and zesty spiciness. A suggestion of violet candy builds on a mildly tannic finish of black pepper and floral notes."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009 Balia Di Zola Redinoce Sangiovese Di Romagna 2009

Balia di Zola is a labor of love for a husband and wife team in Romagna.  They farm 40-year-old Sangiovese vines that they recovered when they formed the estate in 1999.  We flipped for this gutsy, deeply flavored, Sangiovese as soon as we tasted it.  Aromas of dark, ripe blackberries, and leafy forest floor let you know this is a serious Sangiovese.  On the palate, it's got plenty of structure and food-friendly acidity, with enough depth to stand up to gutsy food.  A gem to enjoy with rich food or anything grilled.
