Ch Desclau Bordeaux Superieur 2009 Product #29365 (In Stock)
Ch Desclau Bordeaux Superieur 2009 Ch Desclau Bordeaux Superieur 2009

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2009 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.

Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Product #27116 (In Stock)
Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009 Ch La Cardonne Medoc 2009

Nicely in the drinking window now with miles to go in cellar  yet.

"This is a major sleeper of the vintage and the best wine I have ever tasted from La Cardonne, which is in the northern end of the Medoc, near the town of Blaignan. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, this 2009 offers up notes of tobacco leaf, cassis, and loamy soil with underbrush nuances. With excellent texture, impressive purity, and medium to full body, this is a rich, over-achieving cru bourgeois to drink over the next decade."Wine Advocate 88 points

A nice touch of maturity here, but still plenty of fresh fruit. Try this with a lean grilled steak and lots of herbs!

"A bit lactic and green on the nose, but only at first. With time, it becomes more floral and expressively fruity. Feels compact and chewy, with dark-berry flavors offset by chocolate and peppery spice. Finishes with coffee, chocolate and crusty accents."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Dom Rolet Cremant Du Jura Blanc Brut 2009 Product #29662 (In Stock)
Dom Rolet Cremant Du Jura Blanc Brut 2009 Dom Rolet Cremant Du Jura Blanc Brut 2009

Seriously good Champagne-style fizz from the hills of France's Jura region.  A blend of about half Chardonnay and equal parts Savagnin and Poulsard, this spends a whopping 40 months on the lees after the secondary fermentation, and the extra time shows itself in the super-fine bubbles, creamy texture, and seriously complex aromas and flavors.  Sweet stone fruit, buttered toast, apricot, lemon, honeysuckle, apple and more weave in and out of the generous aromas and flavors.  Finishes clean and fresh with a lightly stony character and lingering notes of fruit and toast.  Very, very, classy.

Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2009 Product #29466 (In Stock)
Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2009 Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2009

A Ripasso that sings with food but has the freshness and vibrancy to enjoy by itself.

"Spicy aromas of floral red cherry, quinine, pink peppercorn and fresh herbs. Enters richer and deeper than the Nicalo, with ripe red cherry and red berry flavors lifted by aromatic herbs. Finishes clean and long, but this still needs a lot of time to express itself. A very good Valpolicella Ripasso that does not aim at being a cheap Amarone knock-off but has a Valpolicella dignity all its own. From a selection of grapes from different hillside vineyards than those that give the grapes for the Nicalo."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009 Product #28764 (In Stock)
Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009 Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009

Rock solid, drinkable, Ribera.  You can age it a bit if you like, but no need to wait for pleasure.

"Opaque ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense and cola, along with a sexy floral nuance and a touch of cracked pepper. Juicy, sweet and expansive, offering vibrant cherry and blackberry flavors and a velvety texture. Finishes with impressive clarity and lift, leaving a candied violet note behind."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The Crianzas are raised in new American oak for around 14 months and Jesus explained that the grapes were cooled to 6 degrees Centigrade for the 2009 Vina Sastre Crianza. It offers a fragrant, floral bouquet of kirsch, loganberry and cranberry, with fine definition and well-integrated oak. There is a touch of chalk dust that emerges after a few moments in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, crisp acidity and a superb citric freshness on the finish: hints of orange peel and tangerine lingering on the aftertaste. This is an understated yet paradoxically flavorsome Crianza. Drink 2013-2019."Wine Advocate 92 points

Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2009 Product #27924 (In Stock)
Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2009 Orsolani Carema Le Tabbie 2009

Ferrando and Carema’s co-op produce the bulk of the meager 10,000 cases of Carema each year, but Gian-Luigi Orsolani makes a tiny bit as well – making this the only other estate-grown/bottled Carema you’ll find.  The name “Le Tabbie” is local dialect for the “tables” or terraces perched on Carema’s mountainsides where Nebbiolo is grown.  Orsolani harvests these grapes in late October and gives them a traditional, long, fermentation and maceration before aging for 2 years in large oak barrels, 1 year in smaller barrels, and 1 last year in bottle.  All the wood is neutral – just letting the wine soften rather than imparting any oak flavor.

This 2009 Carema is more ripe and generous than the lovely 2008, lthough there’s still plenty of bright acidity and chewy tannins.  A beautiful perfume of roses, red fruits, cinnamon and licorice jumps out of the glass with a note of Barolo tar emerging with air.  In the mouth there’s plenty of cherry and strawberry fruit, but the wine is very pure and transparent with accents of rose petal, tar, truffle and mountain flowers.  Very perfumed on the long, elegant, finish, where there’s so much going on that you just have to take another sip.  Fantastic wine, even better value.

A really drinkable, balanced, and even fresh Sonoma County Pinot Noir that's labeled at a whopping 15.5% - but surely that must be wrong?  The texture reminds of Carneros, plush, rich, and nicely concentrated with no over ripeness or heat.  Loads of rich black and Bing cherry fruit are complemented by notes of spice and warm earth and just a touch of oak.  Finishes bright and refreshing (15.5%?  Really?) with lingering red fruit and spice.  A fun, food-friendly, bottle of California Pinot Noir.

Paolo Bea Montefalco Vigna San Valentino 2009 Product #29004 (In Stock)

A stunning blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Montepulciano, all from a 50-year old vineyard.  After a 30 day maceration, the wine ages 3 years in tank and then in bottle until it's ready to drink.  It's a touch more ripe than the 2008 edition, with loads of plump black and Bing cherry accented by fresh earth , licorice, mocha, almond olive and earth  notes.  There's a slight tang of volatile acidity - normal in these organic, no-sulfur, wines - and then loads of dark fruit on the juicy, firm finish.  Less than 400 cases made in 2009 - which is why we only have two of them!

Dom Des Baumard Savennieres Clos Du Papillon 2009 Dom Des Baumard Savennieres Clos Du Papillon 2009

Dry Chenin from a famous Savennières vineyard named for it's butterfly ("Papillon")shape.

"Shaped like a butterfly (papillon), this vineyard is one of the best known in Savennières. It is very rich and ripe, from a warm vintage. With its apricot and pear flavors and opulent texture, it brings out the potential of Chenin Blanc. So age this wine for 5–6 years more."Wine Enthusiast 93 points

"Captivating, with a lively quinine streak leading the way, followed by Jonagold apple, honeysuckle, green almond and plantain notes that race through the pure, mineral-driven finish. Intense, with enough in reserve to warrant cellaring. Best from 2014 through 2020."Wine Spectator 93 points

Here's a stunning blend of Chile's unique Carmenere blended with 15% Cabernet Franc.  Carmenere gives the wine loads of dark red fruit - black plum, cherry, and raspberry - exotic spice, and a rich, voluptuous, texture.  The Cabernet Franc provides lift to the aromas and flavors and adds grace notes of crushed herb, tobacco, and black pepper.  Powerful and very deep, it finishes firm and rich with dark fruit, herb, and floral notes lingering.  A "wow" wine to enjoy with rich foods or on its own.

Dom Larue Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2009 Product #24551 (In Stock)
Dom Larue Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2009 Dom Larue Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2009

The “teeth of the dog” vineyard lies in the southern part of St. Aubin, on the border with Puligny-Montrachet and not far from Montrachet.  The five separate vineyard parcels (about 4 acres total) were planted at different times, with the oldest vines dating from 1947 and 1964.  Vinified in oak (20% new) with 10 months on the lees.

I under-estimated this wine a few years ago – it’s very impressive now and will only get better.  Aromas of rich orchard fruit, iodine, and fresh chervil lead to rich golden fruit, butter, caramel, and salty mineral flavors.  Generous but still very precise, this finishes long and lovely with lingering pineapple, hazelnut, and spice flavors lingering on and on.  A definite “buy” for now and the next 10+ years.

Here’s a wildly delicious sweet red from one of our favorite artisanal producers in Catalonia.  This is 100% old vine Black Garnacha, organically grown and harvested late for super ripeness.  After fermentation (which leaves plenty of sugar), the wine seeps on its skins for 60+ days and then ages for a year in glass demi-johns – outside in the sun, wind, and cold.  The result is a lush mouthful of crushed black raspberry fruit with plenty of coffee and cocoa accents and a finish that goes on forever.

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24683 (In Stock)
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

Usually my personal favorite of the line-up (although 2007 Fonseca is pretty impressive!), the 2009 Taylor Fladgate delivers the Bordeaux-like elegance and class it's known for. On the nose black fruit with notes of raspberry and plum and hints of graphite and cedar. The flavors stay black with currant and cherry appearing plus dark licorice root, apple skin, and more graphite. The deep flavors stay over top of the firm, grippy, mouth-coating tannins that keep everything focused and almost elegant (if such a big wine can be elegant). Love it.

"Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark."Wine Advocate 95 points

Brovia Barolo Brovia 2009 Product #27805 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Brovia 2009 Brovia Barolo Brovia 2009

As Antonio Galloni (formerly Wine Advocate's Italian critic and long-time Barolo writer) says, this is "an exceptional wine in its category."

"The 2009 Barolo Brovia wraps around the palate with serious depth. Leather, cloves, cedar, mocha and incense all flesh out in a supple, radiant wine that captures the very best qualities of the vintage. Smoke, tobacco and dried cherries develop later, adding further complexity. The 2009 has enough suppleness to drink well upon release, especially if given some air. It is an exceptional wine in its category."  Antonio Galloni 90 points

"Sappy aromas of strawberry, redcurrant and flowers. Lively, sweet flavors of red berries, marzipan and chestnut offer attractive inner-mouth lift and perfume. Offers good depth and finishes with solid energy and broad granular tannins. This Barolo should be perfect to drink in three years."International Wine Cellar 89 points

Jonata Todos Vineyard Blend Santa Ynez 2009 Product #27581 (In Stock)
Jonata Todos Vineyard Blend Santa Ynez 2009 Jonata Todos Vineyard Blend Santa Ynez 2009

A super-interesting, very composed, wine from this very quickly up-and-coming estate.

"Readers who want to explore the Jonata wines without investing in the top bottlings will want to check out the 2009 Todos, which is strikingly beautiful. It shows marvelous intensity, great depth and tons of intensity from start to finish. Layers of dark red and black fruit and flowers flow effortlessly from this flashy, totally dazzling wine. Today, the 2009 boasts huge fruit and an equally compelling personality. Although priced well below some of the other wines in this lineup, it is not clear to me the Todos is far off the mark of those wines at all. Todos is a bit of a kitchen sink blend composed of 63% Syrah, 12% Sangiovese, 11% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and dollops of Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019."Wine Advocate 93 points

Ferrando Carema 'etichetta Bianca (Rosso) 2009 Ferrando Carema 'etichetta Bianca (Rosso) 2009

Nebbiolo from the far northern reaches of Piemonte, just before the start of the Valle d'Aosta.  Grapes here grow on small terraces initially built by the Romans and are trained on overhead pergolas to give the grapes access to sunshine and allow ripening. It's an elegant, highly perfumed, expression of Nebbiolo with silky tannins and a long, lingering, finish.  Beautiful stuff.

"Sweet tobacco, dark red stone fruits, mint, crushed flowers and pine all wrap around the palate in the 2009 Carema Etichetta Bianca. This is an unusually supple, open young wine from Ferrando that appears to be built for near and medium-term drinking, as unusual as that will sound to readers who know these wines."  Antonio Galloni 91 points
