Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2010 Product #29747 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2010 Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2010

There's no one named "Lopez" involved with this project and the winery isn't located in the town of Haro.  But the quality from this relatively new project has bee nothing short of astounding through its first set of releases.  The 2008 Rioja Crianza (all Tempranillo) was very nice, but this 2010 takes a clear step up in complexity and satisfaction.

"The 2010 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza feels quite classical in its style, lightly-colored, with clean red spicy fruit, a touch of leather and a polished, soft palate that makes it very pleasant and easy to drink. At this price level this wine is a steal! Drink 2014-2018."Wine Advocate 91 points

Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010 Product #29211 (In Stock)
Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010 Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010

Wine Enthusiast had this pegged as a $38 wine, and certainly it has that level of effort and expense behind it.  The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit came from some of the best sites in Mendoza, all grown without fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides.  The hand harvested fruit is sorted in the vineyard and then again on a modern sorting table in the winery before fermenting in tank with all natural yeast (no cultured yeast added).  The wine then rests and mellows for 15 months in small French oak barrels, including 30% second use and a whopping 70% new - a luxury that makes sense for a $30+ wine but is very rare in the under $20 space.  Then, perhaps the biggest luxury of all, it got another two years development in bottle to let the youthful Cabernet structure resolve and the rich, dark, fruit come to the fore.

“Layered berry and cassis aromas are a bit scratchy and gritty. This Cabernet feels saturated, pure and deep; flavors of blackberry, cassis, prune and chocolate are ripe and generous, while the finish is mildly herbal in flavor, with good length and build. Drink through 2018.” Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Product #30385 (In Stock)
Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010

Young Nicolas Souchon launched this tiny side-project while working as cellar master at Chateauneuf du Pape’s Clos St. Jean.  With advice from super-consultant Philippe Cambie, he crafted 400 cases of this powerful red from his family’s 11 hectares of vineyard in the Languedoc, about 45 miles west of Avignon.  It’s a traditional blend of more-or-less equal parts Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan, with the Syrah and Carignan aged in used barrel and the Grenache in tank.  Full, fleshy, and forward, you'll enjoy this for the rich black raspberry fruit and accents of bitter chocolate, herb, and black olive.  It's 100% ready to drink now - and wants drinking over the next 24 months - with lamb, pork, or earthy bean stews.  A steal, but limited.

“Bright violet. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by floral and cola qualities. Supple cassis and blueberry flavors show very good energy, gaining sweetness and depth with air. Finishes with noteworthy power, a suave note of black raspberry and slow-building tannins.” Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

“Mas des Volques 2010 Vin de Pays Volcae X, a 400-case sleeper of the vintage, is loaded with fruit. It offers sumptuous deep raspberry and black currant aromas and flavors, medium to full body, silky tannins and abundant hedonistic pleasure. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.”Wine Advocate 87-90 points

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2010 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.  Delicious right now and will improve for another 5 years or so.

Dom Les Pallieres Gigondas Les Racines 2010 Dom Les Pallieres Gigondas Les Racines 2010

A highly-rated stunner from this classic estate, refurbished by Kermit Lynch and the Brunier brothers of Vieux Telegraphe fame.

"Vivid ruby. A pungent bouquet displays scents of blackcurrant, candied cherry, licorice, tobacco and smoky herbs. Supple and pliant, offering sharply focused dark berry and cherry compote flavors, silky tannins and a sexy floral quality. Smoothly combines richness and vivacity and finishes with outstanding cut." "The soft, delicious 2010 Gigondas Les Racines is, surprisingly, more open-knit than I remember it from last year. Abundant notes of red and black currants, raspberries, garrigue, crushed rock and peppery spice are all present in this medium to full-bodied, elegant yet substantial, authoritative Gigondas. Les Restanques De Pibarnon Bandol 2010 Product #30875 (In Stock)
Les Restanques De Pibarnon Bandol 2010 Les Restanques De Pibarnon Bandol 2010

A benchmark Bandol, lush and rich and with enough time in bottle to really shine tonight. 70% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache with plenty of heft.

"The entry level red Bandol, the 2010 Bandol Les Restanque de Pibarnon (70% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache) is a superb effort that surpasses a number of estates’ top wines. More forward and ready to go than their traditional cuvee, it is medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with fabulous red fruits, currants, spice box and potpourri-like aromas and flavors all emerging from the glass. While the overall impression here is upfront and fruit-driven, it has good acidity and fine tannin, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve gracefully. Enjoy it over the coming 7-10 years or so."Wine Advocate 91 points

"Ripe and broad-textured, with concentrated roasted plum, dried berry and wild cherry flavors, accented by notes of paprika and white pepper. Bittersweet chocolate hints show on the dense finish. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 93 points

The wines are fairly classic in style across the board.  La Lecciaia's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is beautifully layered in the glass, with gorgeous intrigue, depth and personality all on full display. Girardin Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres 2010 Product #28175 (In Stock)
Girardin Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres 2010 Girardin Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres 2010

Vincent Girardin was born in Santenay, so it's not surprising that this wine from the best 1er cru site in the village gets extra special attention.  "Gravieres" means "gravel," and while the name comes from the stones mixed with the poor soils, you'll certainly taste a gravel-like minerality here, too.  Pure red fruit, soy, balsamic, earth and still more fruit show on the nose and palate.  The smokey, stony, gravel notes pervade the long palate and generous finish, too.  Good tension between ripe fruit, minerality, and juicy acidity here in a wine that's ready to enjoy if better in 3-5 years.

Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010 Product #28991 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010 Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010

This always one of our favorite “Normale” – or “Classico” as the Brovias prefer – Barolo, tempting young and developing nicely over 3-5 years from release.  In 2010, it’s a blend of younger vines from the family’s Cru vineyards, with the biggest portion coming from the Brea vineyard in Serralunga.  It was bottled earlier than the Crus, and because of its shocked state, was not shown to critics Antonio Galloni or Steve Tanzer when they visited the estate earlier this year.  It is very fine value.

As importer Neal Rosenthal explains:  “This cuvée is a blend of the younger vines found in the various “crus” and offers a stylish take on the Brovia approach to this appellation. There is never excess here, no attempt to flaunt an image of power. Above all, balance is the key element in faithfully rendering a Barolo of great stature. You will find here the classic grainy tannins, the long, mineral-inflected finish, the aromas of late-summer roses and flavors of dried cherries.

"Brovia's 2010 Barolo opens with exquisite, floral aromatics. Silky and gracious throughout, the 2010 impresses for its overall balance and classiness. Sweet red cherries, mint, anise, cinnamon and orange peel are some of the notes that open up over time. The 2010 is a wine to treasure for its ample perfume and exceptional harmony. Today, the tannins are a bit firm, so another year or two in bottle is a must. Still, there is so much to like here, even at this early stage. The 2010 Barolo is 70% young-vine fruit from Brea (above 20 years of age), plus the wine that is left over when the single-vineyard Barolos go into cask. A recent bottle of the 2004 was stellar. This is one of the great values left in Barolo. " Antonio Galloni 92 points

"This is spicy, with meat, chocolate and dried-fruit character. Medium body, dense fruit and chewy tannins. Needs two years to soften: better in 2016."  James Suckling 91 points

Celler Cecilio L'Espill Priorat 2010 Product #29994 (In Stock)
Celler Cecilio L'Espill Priorat 2010 Celler Cecilio L'Espill Priorat 2010

The best way to communicate just how stunning the 2010 L'Espill is?  It delivers a very high fraction of the famous Clos Mogador ($100 wine) and half the cost.  An old-vine (50+ years) blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Carignan, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that spends 20-25 days in the fermenter and then 12 months in French oak.  At 5 years old, it's starting to show itself, with focused, intense, aromas of spiced blackberry and roasted meat and undertones of warm Priorat slate.  It's just as focused and intense on the palate, where the spice, black fruit, charred meat, and hot stone notes repeat and keep on pumping out over fine-grained tannins and dusty crushed stone minerality.  A powerful beauty to enjoy for a decade or two.

Musella Amarone 2010 Musella Amarone 2010

Here’s everything you love about Amarone – richness, length, power – in a beautifully balanced wine you’ll enjoy with a wide range of foods.  On the nose there's loads of rich, dried black fruit and rich, dark, spice and chocolate with a pretty accent of crushed flowers and tar.  It’s big and mouthfilling and pumps out generous quantities of dried cherry, raspberry and cranberry fruit to go with notes of soy, tar, and smoke.  For all its size and power, though, the wine stays wonderfully fresh and poised and finishes clean and long.

"The 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella delivers great bang for your buck. This is an exceptional red wine that is loaded tight with the distinct intensity and boldness that characterizes wines made from air-dried grapes. Thick layers of dark cherry, raisin and prune peel back slowly. In the mouth, there is a touch of sweetness followed by flavors of barbecue smoke and teriyaki."Wine Advocate 92 points

Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Product #29760 (In Stock)
Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010

What happens with a top Burgundy winemaker (Jean-Michel Guillon) encourages friends and importers of wines from France (Olivier Daubresse) and Spain (Jonas Gustafsson) to import a Barolo from Italy?  When the Barolo is the stunning 2010 La Tartufaia from young Giulia Negri – aka “BaroloGirl”, something pretty magical results!

Giulia is a child of Barolo (her family owns the well-respected Serrandenari estate), and has  struck out on her own to make Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (which is how she met Jean-Michel), and a classically styled, very pure, Nebbiolo from Barolo’s great 2010 vintage.  Very pure, lifted, scents of red and black berries waft from the glass with accents of tobacco, plum, dried rose petal, and tar.  It’s nicely relaxed and pure – especially at this young age – on the palate, with juicy red/black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco, and hints of smoky oak.  With air, a little truffle and potpourri emerge and the fruit flavors get deeper and more prominent as the wine sails on to a generous finish over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Round and rich, this tempts right now with big tannins that melt away nicely but will become more exciting and explosive from 2017 – 2025.

"Purple berries, licorice and sweet oak on the nose. Sappy, saline and serious, showing a slightly medicinal cast to the flavors of black raspberry, menthol and minerals. Not yet pliant but this very young wine has the structure and supporting minerality--and extract--to evolve gracefully. The tannins are ultimately round. This very promising set of wines comes from a joint venture between collector Andrew Tow and David Low, co-founder and winemaker of Anthill Farms. Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Product #26485 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really grabbed us in 2010.  Screams “Gevrey” with its earthy red fruit and note of dusty iron ore but still soft and open enough to give early pleasure.  Excellent value.

"In contrast to the relatively expressive noses of the prior three wines, this is much more serious with brooding aromas of earth, wild red berries and a whiff of humus. There is excellent energy to the detailed and lightly mineral-suffused flavors that possess good ripeness to the structural elements where the finish again displays a wonderful sense of tension and energy."Allen Meadows 88-91 points
