Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2010 Product #29584 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2010 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2010

If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.  The tannins have softened since the review below, so enjoy right now with grilled foods and warm weather!

"Full of tannins at this stage, it shows power and density. It’s a blend of more than 10 varieties, giving complexity as well as structure. There is acidity as well, bringing together the rich texture and a solid, wood and dark fruit combination. It needs to age a few years, so drink from 2016."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml Product #28678 (In Stock)
Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml

As always, a lovely value!

"Admirers of the so-called “little” wines of Bordeaux will no doubt be familiar with Recougne, which has been imported into the United States for nearly thirty years and can last for two decades or more. The 2010, which they now call “Vieilles Vignes,” exhibits aromas and flavors of cedarwood, spice box, black currants and berries. This medium-bodied, well-made blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc should drink well for 7-8 years. (Although last year I drank a 1952 that was still quite tasty.)"Wine Advocate 87-88 points

Sur De Los Andes Malbec Cabernet Premium 2010 Product #29210 (In Stock)
Sur De Los Andes Malbec Cabernet Premium 2010 Sur De Los Andes Malbec Cabernet Premium 2010

This was supposed to be a $24 “Premium” red, and we certainly found enough in the bottle and the enthusiastic critical reviews to support that price. Like most of our Mendoza favorites, it’s a blend of Malbec (for lush, opulent, fruit) and Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and class).  Sustainable farming - no herbicides or fertilizers, natural spring water irrigation - hand harvesting, double sorting on vibrating tables, and up to a year in French oak (20% new), and a little extra time in bottle before release all sound like a recipe for great wine and big prices.

No idea why the price dropped to this level, but it’s a flat-out steal.  It’s a  blockbuster steakhouse Malbec/Cabernet blend that’s loaded with black fruit, licorice, and spice over firm, dusty, tannins.  Anyone who wants a serious steak wine for a not very serious price would do way to snap up some of this before everyone else catches on and the price pops back up to where it’s supposed to be.

“Intense mineral and berry aromas show class and touches of mint and resiny wood. This feels crisp, electric and drawing, while flavors of graphite, mint, raw oak, vanilla, plum and raspberry run onto a lightly herbal, medium-length finish. Drink this tightly wound, fresh young blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot now through 2020.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010 Product #29211 (In Stock)
Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010 Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010

Wine Enthusiast had this pegged as a $38 wine, and certainly it has that level of effort and expense behind it.  The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit came from some of the best sites in Mendoza, all grown without fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides.  The hand harvested fruit is sorted in the vineyard and then again on a modern sorting table in the winery before fermenting in tank with all natural yeast (no cultured yeast added).  The wine then rests and mellows for 15 months in small French oak barrels, including 30% second use and a whopping 70% new - a luxury that makes sense for a $30+ wine but is very rare in the under $20 space.  Then, perhaps the biggest luxury of all, it got another two years development in bottle to let the youthful Cabernet structure resolve and the rich, dark, fruit come to the fore.

“Layered berry and cassis aromas are a bit scratchy and gritty. This Cabernet feels saturated, pure and deep; flavors of blackberry, cassis, prune and chocolate are ripe and generous, while the finish is mildly herbal in flavor, with good length and build. Drink through 2018.” Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010 Pieve Vecchia Sangiovese Chorum Montecucco 2010

This Sangiovese from the fairly new Tuscan DOC of Montecucco waaay over-delivers for it's modest price. Lush aromas of dark cherry fruit and leather carry through to the sexy palate, which bursts with tangy ripe fruit dusted with fresh herb. There's lots of richness here, but also great energy from beginning to end where a hit of bitter chocolate and herb linger nicely.  A whole lot of wine for the money.

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 Product #28737 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010

Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element." Wine Spectator 89 points

Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010 Ch Damase Bordeaux Superieur 2010

Mostly Merlot, with 10% Carmenere and 5% Petit Verdot for color and structure.  Unusually - at least at this price point - the wine ages entirely in new and 1 year-old oak casks for a year. The result is a richly fruit-filled Bordeaux - cherry, cassis, plum - with sophisticated accents of smoke, cedar, and herb.  Almost California fruit levels, but plenty of Bordeaux class at the end.

Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28440 (In Stock)
Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Priorat Negre 2010

Priorat tends to be a massive, intense, and cellar-worthy wine that needs time in cellar or big food to shine.  So, the 2010 Billo Negre is a very special treat – a supple, open, blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers plenty of classic Priorat character in a “drink me now” style.  Generous aromas of black plums, blackberry, warm stones and a touch of savory herb waft from the glass.  In the mouth the fruit turns more Grenache-like with raspberry and red plum joining the cassis and blue/black fruits and a touch of luscious milk chocolate coming up on the end.  It’s full of flavor and nicely concentrated, but stays wonderfully fresh and pure on the dark berry, chocolate, and warm stone finish. The soft, fine-grained, tannins give this more than enough heft to pair with pork tenderloin or lamb loin chops, but it’s pretty darn tasty all by itself, too.  A stellar value from rocky, dry, remote, Priorat.

Corte Adami Valpolicella Superiore 2010 Product #26892 (In Stock)
Corte Adami Valpolicella Superiore 2010 Corte Adami Valpolicella Superiore 2010

An "old school" Valpolicella from a fairly young estate (2004).  A blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes from 40 year-old vines done all in tank, this features ripe black cherry fruit flavors and aromas with a dash of fresh, resiny, pine and herb. With a little air, the fruit gets darker and spicier and a lovely dried tobacco note emerges.  Juicy and lightly tannic, this will work extremely well at table.

Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28468 (In Stock)
Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

Not a lot of history here, with 2004 the Bonnano family's first vintage.  But, there's plenty of classic Napa Valley Cabernet character and class in the bottle.  A blend of Valley floor fruit from Rutherford, Oakville, St. Helena and Oak Knoll aged 20 months in (mostly used) French oak. Very Napa aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, crushed herb and cedar with a rich texture and plush, soft, tannins.  A prickle of juicy acidity at the end makes this especially fine with richer meats, but you can certainly just sip it, too.  Nice value.

"Cru Bourgeois" is the label given to Bordeaux estates of superior quality that were not listed in the Classification of 1855.  In a fine vintage (like 2010), this is where you'll find outstanding quality/value wines - like this beauty.  It's a blend of about equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Petite Verdot for spice.  It's a classic, classy, Left Bank Bordeaux with pretty fruit and fine, vigorous, structure.  Drink now with lamb or beef or let it keep opening for a few years.

""The La Gorre has a very attractive bouquet with lively, vivacious black cherries, boysenberry and crushed stone that is well defined and opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. The acidity is crisp and the finish tense, with hints of graphite on the finish. This is a well-crafted Cru Bourgeois. Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero 2010 Product #29390 (In Stock)
Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero 2010 Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero 2010

Pinot Noir has excellent potential in Piemonte's foggy, rolling, hills, with warm summer days driving nice ripeness and cool nights and poor soils helping to retain freshness and grace.  Lajetto is a fine example, a rich, ripe, and really delicious Pinot Noir with just a touch of Nebbiolo style.  Grown on the family’s estate in Asti, this gets extra body and depth from 12 months in small oak barrels.  There’s a nice spice to the dark red fruit and just a touch of Nebbiolo-like tar and roses and finishes smooth and velvety.

Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 375ml Product #29222 (In Stock)
Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 375ml Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 375ml

This old Montalcino estate, founded by Francesco Ciacci in 1877, has been a Brunello standard-bearer for decades now.  Giuseppe Bianchini (the estate manager who inherited the property when the last Ciacci died in 1985) and his children Paolo and Lucia are famed for producing elegant, aromatic, wines that still pack plenty of Brunello power and punch.  The family introduced this wine, made from the estate's younger vines, in 2003 and it's grown into one of the most highly-rated, best value, wines of the region.  It always drinks well very young (although an hour of air won't hurt), and is best enjoyed in the first 15 years from the vintage.

“Very perfumed with flower, truffle, light wet earth and cherry character. Full body and full integrated ripe tannins and caresses your palate. Very fine and pretty. Slight soya undertone. Succulent and enticing. You want to drink this. Better in 2016.”  James Suckling 94 points

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino represents a return to the traditional values of Montalcino. The bouquet is buoyant and bright with lingering tones of smoke, ash, balsam herb, licorice and soy sauce. Those kinds of aromas make Brunello such a wonderful wine and thankfully you get them in abundance here. Dry mineral and brimstone also give the wine a sense of focus, sharpness and cleanliness that is very appealing. The close is long, fine and polished. I look forward to retasting this bottle five years from now."Wine Advocate 94+ points

Yup, another great vintage for this wine that splits the difference between "modern" and "traditional" styles.

"(70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, 7% mazuelo and 3% graciano; fermented in large oak vats and aged for 24 months in oak casks of varying size): Opaque ruby. Musky, deeply pitched aromas of ripe red fruit, game, lavender and roasted coffee. Shows very good spicy lift in the mouth, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and an undercurrent of smoky minerals. Finishes with excellent focus and thrust; the slowly building tannins meld smoothly with the wine's dense fruit. Age this wine for at least another five years, with confidence."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Cune Rioja Reserva 2010 Product #29489 (In Stock)

A classically styled Reserva, spicy, juicy, and long.

"Fresh red berries and cherry on the fragrant nose, with spice and floral nuances adding complexity. Juicy and focused, delivering good lift to its sappy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. A zesty mineral quality adds cut to the youthfully tannic, fragrant finish, which clings with serious tenacity."  Vinous 91 points

"The 2010 CUNE Reserva displays a nice bright cherry color and a clean, elegant nose of red fruits. It might be a little backward and require some coaxing to reveal its personality. The medium-bodied palate is quite complete, the tannins are well-coated by the fruit, and it ends with good length and clean flavors. A textbook Reserva. Drink 2014-2019."Wine Advocate 91 points
