Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Product #30385 (In Stock)
Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010 Mas Des Volques Volcae X 2010

Young Nicolas Souchon launched this tiny side-project while working as cellar master at Chateauneuf du Pape’s Clos St. Jean.  With advice from super-consultant Philippe Cambie, he crafted 400 cases of this powerful red from his family’s 11 hectares of vineyard in the Languedoc, about 45 miles west of Avignon.  It’s a traditional blend of more-or-less equal parts Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan, with the Syrah and Carignan aged in used barrel and the Grenache in tank.  Full, fleshy, and forward, you'll enjoy this for the rich black raspberry fruit and accents of bitter chocolate, herb, and black olive.  It's 100% ready to drink now - and wants drinking over the next 24 months - with lamb, pork, or earthy bean stews.  A steal, but limited.

“Bright violet. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by floral and cola qualities. Supple cassis and blueberry flavors show very good energy, gaining sweetness and depth with air. Finishes with noteworthy power, a suave note of black raspberry and slow-building tannins.” Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

“Mas des Volques 2010 Vin de Pays Volcae X, a 400-case sleeper of the vintage, is loaded with fruit. It offers sumptuous deep raspberry and black currant aromas and flavors, medium to full body, silky tannins and abundant hedonistic pleasure. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.”Wine Advocate 87-90 points

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2010 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.  Delicious right now and will improve for another 5 years or so.

"Dark, grippy and very tarry, with lots of pebbly tannins driving underneath the layers of boysenberry, steeped fig and blackberry fruit. Ample baker's chocolate and dark tobacco fill in the remaining space. This will need a little cellaring to round into form, but remains a very solid, muscular version. Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Product #29760 (In Stock)
Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010

What happens with a top Burgundy winemaker (Jean-Michel Guillon) encourages friends and importers of wines from France (Olivier Daubresse) and Spain (Jonas Gustafsson) to import a Barolo from Italy?  When the Barolo is the stunning 2010 La Tartufaia from young Giulia Negri – aka “BaroloGirl”, something pretty magical results!

Giulia is a child of Barolo (her family owns the well-respected Serrandenari estate), and has  struck out on her own to make Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (which is how she met Jean-Michel), and a classically styled, very pure, Nebbiolo from Barolo’s great 2010 vintage.  Very pure, lifted, scents of red and black berries waft from the glass with accents of tobacco, plum, dried rose petal, and tar.  It’s nicely relaxed and pure – especially at this young age – on the palate, with juicy red/black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco, and hints of smoky oak.  With air, a little truffle and potpourri emerge and the fruit flavors get deeper and more prominent as the wine sails on to a generous finish over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Round and rich, this tempts right now with big tannins that melt away nicely but will become more exciting and explosive from 2017 – 2025.

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010

Ernie Pink and Dena Drews craft this lovely Pinot to tell the story of their vineyard in the vintage, blending different clones and parcels from across their 35 acre site perched above Freedom Hill.  In 2010 it's beautiful with the elegance and purity of this remarkable vintage and the open sophistication that only a little time in bottle reveals.  Lovely now and through 2020.

"Bright red. Smoky, mineral-accented black raspberry and rose oil aromas are complemented by hints of cinnamon and allspice. Gently sweet red fruit flavors are given depth by a cherry pit nuance and sharpened by juicy acidity. Silky in texture and appealingly sweet, finishing with very good clarity, subtle tannins and noteworthy spicy persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Les Restanques De Pibarnon Bandol 2010 Product #30875 (In Stock)
Les Restanques De Pibarnon Bandol 2010 Les Restanques De Pibarnon Bandol 2010

A benchmark Bandol, lush and rich and with enough time in bottle to really shine tonight. 70% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache with plenty of heft.

"The entry level red Bandol, the 2010 Bandol Les Restanque de Pibarnon (70% Mourvedre and 30% Grenache) is a superb effort that surpasses a number of estates’ top wines. More forward and ready to go than their traditional cuvee, it is medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with fabulous red fruits, currants, spice box and potpourri-like aromas and flavors all emerging from the glass. While the overall impression here is upfront and fruit-driven, it has good acidity and fine tannin, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve gracefully. Enjoy it over the coming 7-10 years or so."Wine Advocate 91 points

"Ripe and broad-textured, with concentrated roasted plum, dried berry and wild cherry flavors, accented by notes of paprika and white pepper. Bittersweet chocolate hints show on the dense finish. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 93 points

Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010 Product #28991 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010 Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010

This always one of our favorite “Normale” – or “Classico” as the Brovias prefer – Barolo, tempting young and developing nicely over 3-5 years from release.  In 2010, it’s a blend of younger vines from the family’s Cru vineyards, with the biggest portion coming from the Brea vineyard in Serralunga.  It was bottled earlier than the Crus, and because of its shocked state, was not shown to critics Antonio Galloni or Steve Tanzer when they visited the estate earlier this year.  It is very fine value.

As importer Neal Rosenthal explains:  “This cuvée is a blend of the younger vines found in the various “crus” and offers a stylish take on the Brovia approach to this appellation. There is never excess here, no attempt to flaunt an image of power. Above all, balance is the key element in faithfully rendering a Barolo of great stature. You will find here the classic grainy tannins, the long, mineral-inflected finish, the aromas of late-summer roses and flavors of dried cherries.

"Brovia's 2010 Barolo opens with exquisite, floral aromatics. Silky and gracious throughout, the 2010 impresses for its overall balance and classiness. Sweet red cherries, mint, anise, cinnamon and orange peel are some of the notes that open up over time. The 2010 is a wine to treasure for its ample perfume and exceptional harmony. Today, the tannins are a bit firm, so another year or two in bottle is a must. Still, there is so much to like here, even at this early stage. The 2010 Barolo is 70% young-vine fruit from Brea (above 20 years of age), plus the wine that is left over when the single-vineyard Barolos go into cask. A recent bottle of the 2004 was stellar. This is one of the great values left in Barolo. " Antonio Galloni 92 points

"This is spicy, with meat, chocolate and dried-fruit character. Medium body, dense fruit and chewy tannins. Needs two years to soften: better in 2016."  James Suckling 91 points

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010 Product #27282 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010

Norberto Miguel only makes this, his top wine, in selected vintages of exceptional ripeness and quality.  It’s from 80+ year-old Tempranillo vines planted by Norberto’s grandfather and grown on the rocky, barren, soils of Rioja Alavesa.  Norberto hand-harvests the grapes when they taste good to him and then crushes them gently by foot to extract plenty of color and flavor without getting harsh tannins from the stems or seeds.  After vinification the wines go into American and French oak barrels (about 30% new)  And there the wine sits until Norberto thinks it’s ready – not one day longer.

The result is just about the perfect marriage between Rioja tradition and modern winemaking sensibility.  In 2010, this wine is just fabulous, supple and mineral with excellent length and very little obvious oak.  Scents of black raspberry and plum fruit accented by notes of sweet spice, tobacco, violets and a touch of iron.  In the mouth, the wine is very pure and elegant, with focused dark fruit and spice lifted by a hint of tangy cherry acidity and supported by silky smooth, ripe, tannins.  With air, a touch of coffee/mocha emerges and fruit broadens, but the minerality and acidity keep the wine focused, pure, and beautiful.  Drink it now with roasted or grilled meats and enjoy how it gains even more layers over the next 8-10 years in cellar.  Outstanding value for a Rioja of this quality and grace.

Guigal always releases its Chateauneuf a bit late, making it a great choice for drinking now.

"A stunning effort and showing the class of the vintage, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is comprised of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that spent 24 months in foudre prior to bottling. Rich, textured and medium to full-bodied, with ample black cherry, olive tapenade and subtle meatiness, this traditional effort stays pure and lively, with fine tannin emerging on the finish. It can be consumed now or cellared for over a decade."Wine Advocate 93 points

"A solid, brick-house version, with roasted mesquite and alder notes providing the frame while the steeped plum, raspberry and black currant fruit core waits in reserve. A charcoal accent pins down the finish. Should open steadily with cellaring, though this will likely maintain a pleasantly rugged feel."Wine Spectator 92 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Estate 2010 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Estate 2010

Every vintage, co-owners/winegrowers Ernie Pink and Dena Drews pick their favorite barrels of the vintage to craft “his & hers” cuvees.  Ernie's "his" selection always evokes Burgundy, specifically the structured but very pure wines of Dujac.  In 2010 Ernie's lot included a range of clones with about 25% fermented whole cluster and 45% in new French oak.  Broader on the palate than Amalie's Cuvee with more power and chew, but still elegant and wonderfully long.  A fine Pinot for fresh game!

"Bright red. Expressive spicy, floral bouquet evokes fresh rose, red berries and incense, with a subtle orange zest note adding lift. Silky, tangy and precise, offering nervy redcurrant and raspberry flavors that slowly flesh out with air. Shows outstanding clarity and lift on the long, spicy finish, which betrays just a hint of fine-grained tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 92 points

Dom Larue Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2010 Product #29397 (In Stock)
Dom Larue Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2010 Dom Larue Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2010

Seventy years ago, La Garennne and its neighboring 1er Cru vineyards were covered in scrub and littered with boulders – virtually unplantable.  As Burgundy’s economic fortunes recovered in the 1950s and 1960s, residents banded together to clear the land and allow them to be planted to vine.  Their reward:  wines of such purity and grace that most of the “new” vineyard land quickly earned 1er Cru status!

And, in the brilliant 2010 vintage, this is very 1er Cru indeed.  It’s a powerful wine with rich, deep, aromas that explode from the glass before you even give it a swirl.  Fresh butter, toasted hazelnut, spicy pear, sweet apricot and the chalky stones that make Puligny the greatest Chardonnay vineyard in the world all weave in an out of the complex aromas.  On the palate, you get 1er cru weight and depth right away with layers and layers if rich flavors:  orchard fruit, sweet pineapple, cultured butter, warm nuts, white flowers, wet stones and more.  As with all the best 2010 Puligny Montrachet, this delivers loads of richness without an ounce of excess weight and keeps on pumping out the buttery fruit and nut flavors across a broad, rich, and very persistent finish.  At nearly 5 years of age, it’s drinking beautifully although the density, power and touch of crushed mint left in the glass suggest that 3-8 years more in cellar will do this beauty nothing but good.
