Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012 Product #28489 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012 Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012

You might want to see if pigs are starting to fly – because Doug is actually recommending a wine made from Pinotage!  This cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir created in 1941 and grown pretty much exclusively in South Africa is usually too earthy, vegetal, chemical….whatever; it usually doesn’t taste very good.  But here the combination of 80% Pinotage and 20% of a very obscure blending grape called Mocha ends up tasting like really ripe Gamay.  Not sure how they did that, but I am sure that you’ll love the big, plump, raspberry, fruit cake, dark chocolate, and subtle leather aromas and flavors and the juicy, mouthwatering, bite of cranberry at the very end.  A great wine to chill down and enjoy from the time you light the grill right on through washing up after your guests have left.  Really fun stuff.

“Light-bodied and direct, with bitter cherry, blood orange and singed cedar notes, delivering a racy, taut feel through the finish.”Wine Spectator 86 points

Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2012 Product #28090 (In Stock)
Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2012 Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2012

Cortese is best known as the grape of Gavi, but it's grown seldom as interesting as this! This wine is surprisingly complex on the nose, although we struggled to put it to words. Think of smelling an herbal infusion with lemon, honey, and lavender on a sunny day. (Fanciful, but it's the best I could do!) In the mouth the wine is clean and crisp with notes of lemon, bees wax, and fresh herbs complicated by something hard to describe but vaguely grapefruity. finishes clean and fresh with just a hint of green apple. this is going to be our "go to" for picnics, cold seafood salads, and simple chicken dishes. A whole lotta wine for the money.

De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012 Product #27161 (In Stock)
De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012 De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012

The Falerio DOC sits at the southern end of Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast just East of Umbria.  The relatively new DOC was created in 1975 to promote the region's two best white wine grapes-Passerina and Pecorino-while continuing to allow use of the ubiquitous Trebbiano.

This 2012 Falerio is a fresh, young, wine with all of the refreshing, spritzy qualities of the 2011, but with an extra notch of richness.  The aromas are like sniffing limes and peaches at the beach-plenty of green and orchard fruit aromas with a saline note of the sea in the background.  On the palate, there's loads of ripe, creamy peach and nectarine fruit with a spritz of key lime juice and seltzer followed by a chalky, salty, mineral-driven, finish.  There's a lot of creamy richness here that will please fans of unoaked Chardonnays, but the zesty acidity and mineral element make this super fresh and mouthwatering.  Brilliant with a garlicky scampi and seafood but pretty darn fun to just drink at a party or with friends over antipasti.  Staggering value.

Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012 Product #28582 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012 Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012

On tasting this, our first thought:  What a great summer red!  It’s full of fresh, thirst-quenching, strawberry and raspberry fruit with just a touch of oak spice and smoke from the few months it spent “warming up” the new oak barrels to be used for longer-aged Crianza and Reserva Rioja wines.  Drink it with a light chill for maximum refreshment or let it warm up a bit to sing with burgers and hot dogs off the grill.

"The 2012 Lopez de Haro Tempranillo is pure young Tempranillo used to break the new barrels for three to four months, showing the purple color and the exuberance of the young fruit with strawberries, raspberries, flowers and red licorice notes. A pleasure to drink slightly chilled with charcuterie. Refreshing and a real bargain.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2012 Product #27878 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2012 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2012

Long one of our – and Robert Parker’s – “go to” wineries for great value reds, this Campo de Borgia Garnacha specialist has outdone itself with a brilliant 2012.  A perfect bottle to serve to a crowd or sip on its own after a hard day, this will also sing with anything from salmon to burgers or roast pork.

“Expressive aromas of black raspberry, violet and white pepper. Supple, spicy and pliant, with an appealingly sweet quality to the dark berry, spice and floral flavors. Plenty of personality here, especially at the price. Finishes on a refreshingly bitter note, with silky tannins and very good persistence.” International Wine Cellar 89 points

“If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do. The 2012 Borsao Tinto, is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo aged in stainless steel. Made in the fourth straight drought vintage in the province of Zaragoza, this has been a big-time winner in just about every vintage it has been produced. A delicious black cherry, crushed chalk and flower-scented nose jumps from the glass of this richly fruity, medium to full-bodied, supple, velvety-textured red. This mouthfilling 2012 should drink well for several years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Another great vintage for this perennial "best value" Garnacha from Campo de Borgia.  Powerful, deep aromas of black raspberry and cherry with accents of minerals and fresh cut flowers.  Juicy and fresh in the mouth but with plenty of dark berry and cherry fruit and hints of lavender and liquorice.  Long and clean on the spicy finish over oodles of ripe fruit.  Easy to drink, but worth attending to.

Mundo De Yuntero Tempranillo Syrah 2012 Product #28047 (In Stock)
Mundo De Yuntero Tempranillo Syrah 2012 Mundo De Yuntero Tempranillo Syrah 2012

A tad bit better and more fun than the Wine Advocate write-up suggests, this charming La Mancha red bursts with blackberry and plum fruit and just touch of complicating spice.  A fruit-forward, fun, wine that's easy to drink and ready to play at your next party or casual meal.

"The 2012 Mundo de Yuntero Tempranillo comes from Cuidad Real from organic vines (including 15% Syrah) and sees no oak contact. It has a clean, fresh boysenberry and small dark cherry nose, while the palate is fleshy and generous on the entry. It finishes a little “generic” but it is a commercially sound Tempranillo at a bargain price."Wine Advocate 90 points

"The 2012 Epilogo is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Moscatel from biodynamically cultivated vines and undergoes a natural ferment. The nose is crisp and lively; displaying lemon thyme, apricot and citrus peel. The palate is well-balanced with elderflower-tinged citrus fruit that fans out towards a flavorsome, clean, precise finish. This is an excellent white La Mancha wine! From a small Barbaresco producer, this fresh and fruity Barbera delivers a lot more complexity and satisfaction than it's humble price suggests.  Fresh and juicy Bing/black cherry fruit roll across your tongue with accents of fresh leather and aged Balsamic.  Long on the palate and mouthwatering finish where very light tannin gives a little extra support.  A pretty sophisticated wine for the price - great with pizza, pasta, or even on its own.

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Product #28132 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012

SOLD OUT NOW - But More Arrives Tuesday!

Nothing super fancy here - just a really, really, good Cotes du Rhone at a great value price to enjoy with everything from burgers to lamb chops.  About half Grenache with 30% Syrah and then equal parts Carignan and Cinsault, mostly from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s by former owner Count de Regis de Gatimel.  Most of the luscious, ripe, fruit ferments and ages in tank but part of the Syrah sees barrel to add richness and depth.

A good deal richer and darker than the very popular 2011 edition, the 2012 Segries Cotes du Rhone gushes with aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.  A winner.

"This estate has been on a qualitative hot streak for more than a decade... The 2012 Cotes du Rhone is composed of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Cinsault. It is a fruity, pedal-to-the-metal, peppery, black currant and black cherry-scented and flavored, medium-bodied Cotes du Rhone displaying hints of lavender and garrigue. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

"Full-bodied but approachable, this wine shows a slightly horsey edge on the nose, and pleasingly suede-like flavors and textures underlying the raspberry fruit. It’s a complex mélange that should likely be consumed over the next couple of years. BEST BUY!"Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Ch Millegrand Minervois 2012 Product #28258 (In Stock)

Loads of authentic Languedoc character in this classic, if a tad under-priced, blend of 35% Syrah, 30% Carignan, 25% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre. From vineyards on the border between Minervois and Corbieres, Millegrand's fruit benefits from the "Carcassonne Gateway" effect - a perfect blend of Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pyrenees climates.  It's gutsy and concentrated, full of dark red and black fruit with accents of Languedoc herb and earth.  Distinctly earthy on the ripe, powerful, finish, this is a fantastic match for roast lamb or grilled pork.

Val De Salis Malbec Pays D'oc 2012 Product #28038 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Malbec Pays D'oc 2012 Val De Salis Malbec Pays D'oc 2012

Malbec surged to international fame on the strength of the darkly fruited, ripe, and lush examples grown in Argentina’s Mendoza vineyards.  But, before that, it was the basis of one of the most famous wines of late medieval Europe, the intense, earthy, bitingly tannic “black wines” of Cahors in the Southwest of France. The 2012 Val De Salis Malbec from vineyards near the French walled city of  Carcassonne sort of splits the difference in these two styles to deliver a big mouthful of juicy, complex, fruity fun.

You’ll find plenty of New World fruit here, with generous dollops of red plum, raspberry and tangy pie cherry in the aromas and on the palate.  And, you’ll also notice the Old World notes of fresh leather, licorice root, and the notes of lavender, thyme, and black olive the French call garrigue.  On the finish, the New/Old World influence merge to deliver lingering red fruit, licorice, and lavender flavors, bright acidity, and just the right dose of dusty tannin.  What you won’t find is any oak to get in the way of the pure, clean, and refreshing flavors.  Structured enough to sing with burgers, pizza, grilled chicken or most any everyday food, but soft and generous enough to just sip at a party.  And, a steal at this price!

Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Product #27452 (In Stock)
Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  Rain, hail, and wind cut the Chardonnay harvest by about 40% in 2012, giving the Couillauds unusually concentrated, powerful, fruit.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with super energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  This will be fantastic with rich seafood dishes and fresh cheeses.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012 Product #27353 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  Great value, too.

Falanghina is a wine that is often described as fun, or yummy, but rarely as elegant.  This, friends, is an elegant Falanghina.  The exotic aromas of pineapple and quince are still there, but they are less flamboyant and obvious.  On the palate, it's moutfilling and finishes with fresh, juicy acids, but what really impresses is its sophisticated texture - not to heavy, but not too light.  Perfect seafood and warm summer nights.

Uvaggio Vermentino Lodi 2012 Product #28648 (In Stock)
Uvaggio Vermentino Lodi 2012 Uvaggio Vermentino Lodi 2012

Former Mondavi Cal-Ital winemaker Jim Moore crafts this delicious Vermentino from fruit grown in two sunny, dry, vineyards in Lodi California.  As usual, Jim harvested his fruit in early September, giving him perfectly ripe fruit at low sugar levels and with great natural acidity.  This year, about 10% spent a few months in neutral oak to add a little more rich complexity, but the main story remains the brisk lime, quince, and pear aromas and melon and stone fruit flavors.  As always, this finishes crisp and with a bit of the tang of the sea to it, making it as brilliant with seafood as it is by itself on the back deck.  As Jancis Robinson said of the 2008, “one mouthful of this was enough to remind me of a lunch in Liguria high above the sparkling blue Mediterranean."

"BEST BUY! From two vineyard sources in Lodi, Uvaggio’s Vermentino is always a delicious bet, with crisp, light melon fruit and a salty quality that calls out for food from the sea. Modest in alcohol, the texture is mouthwateringly addictive, a quality that follows through from first sip to last."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

For many of you, an opportunity for two “firsts” – your first wine from Moldova and your first pure white wine (not pink – white!) made from the red Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Not sure why the winery went this route, but the results are pretty compelling!  The aromas have some of Sauvignon Blanc's grapefruit and grass notes but the wine's texture is more like Albarino (minerally, sleek) and the flavors of creamy sweet strawberry, pineapple and banana pith suggest something like Verdejo.  There's a snap of jalepeno-like herb on the back, but overall this is nicely cream and fruity and bright.
