The reviews tell you all you need to know about how delicious this wine is, so here’s a little information on the vintage. Sandwiched between the powerful, dark, 2004 vintage and the highly promising (if muscular) 2006s, Barolo 2005 is getting a little overlooked. While lacking the weight and sheer stuffing of 2004 and 2006, the best 2005s are blessed with plenty of ripe fruit and soft, elegant, tannins making them highly approachable and enjoyable young. I think 2005 will turn out much the same as 1993 - a vintage that was overlooked on release but that gave us fine, classic, Barolo that has been drinking well for the past dozen years and shows promise for another 5-10 years of growth.
“Oberto’s 2005 Barolos are among the softest, most approachable wines of the vintage, yet they offer lovely overall balance. The wines all underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak, where they spent about six months prior to being racked into a combination of smaller barrels (70%) and larger 16-hectoliter casks (30%) to finish their aging… The 2005 Barolo Albarella is soft-textured and generous in its minty, floral aromatics and sweet red fruit. This is another beautifully-balanced wine with elegant tannins and an approachable personality that is showing quite nicely today. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.”Wine Advocate 91 points
“There's sweet fruit on the nose, with lots of toasty oak, milk chocolate and lightly stewed fruit character. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and fruit, vanilla and mineral flavors. Long and bright. Best after 2011. 540 cases made.”Wine Spectator 92 points
