For the past two years, I’ve been whining to Jonas about how much I wanted to have a “Vin de Terra-style” Rioja to work with. Well, here it is and it will knock your socks off. This is Bodegas Laukote's top wine, the equivalent of a Rioja Reserva. The fruit comes from three hectares of 80+ year-old vines - wines extremely old for Rioja. The wine is then given a cool fermentation before being aged in top-quality oak barrels.
Aromas of dark black cherry, plum, smoke, and chocolate explode from the glass. In the mouth, the flavors are intense and complex, if a bit primary still, with notes of black raspberry, red plum, coffee, and a bit of vanilla all swirling around your palate. A great mineral note emerges and expands along with the red fruit, oak spice, and smoke notes on the long and generous finish. This wine shows like an absolutely top-notch $50 Rioja Riserva – young and very primary right now, but built to age and deliver the perfect balance of fruit and classic Rioja tertiary character (black tea, flowers, earth) over time. A wine to buy by the case and watch and enjoy for 10-15 years."The 2005 Vendimia Seleccionada was sourced from 80-year-old vines. Purple-colored with legs that ooze down the glass, it proffers complex aromas of damp earth, espresso, incense, violets, black cherry, and blackberry compote. Elegant on the palate with a racy personality, it has plenty of ripe fruit, well-concealed tannins, and a lengthy, savory finish.
