What makes a great vintage “great”?  I’d argue that a big element of “greatness” is the quality you find from smaller, lesser-known, estates.  And that’s just one reason why critics and wine-lovers alike are so excited about 2009 in Bordeaux.  Take Chateau Grand Monguillet Bordeaux Rouge 2009, for example.  This small estate is so far “under the radar” that even the importer has almost no information on them.  But, we know that in 2009, they harvested lovely, ripe, Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%), and Petit Verdot (10%) and then aged in all in barrel (20% new).  Then, they gave it an attractive label and packed in real wood cases for export.

The result is a wine anyone would call “Bordeaux” from first sniff.  Bright red currant and tart cherry fruit, tobacco, cedar, fresh herb, and just a whiff of toasty oak all intermingle on the nose and in the juicy, bright, flavors.  The flavors are more than “serious” enough to make this a great companion for roast lamb but the texture and soft tannins are generous enough to sip with anything from grilled chicken to pizza.  And a dozen bottles in their branded wood case make an impressive Holiday gift for any wine lover on your list!
