Just like last year, “utterly delicious" is what I wrote on first tasting this fantastic value Cotes du Rhone cuvee. Mainly Grenache (from 40+ year-old vines) plus 15% Carignan (38 years old) and 5% Syrah (27 years of age) fermented and aged entirely in tank, this marries intensely pure fruit with a firm sense of terroir.
Aromas of crushed red raspberries and earthy spice lead to juicy raspberry Grenache fruit with hints of blueberry and red plum. At first the wine is soft and round, then Carignan's mineral and tannic structure emerge on the back to support lingering sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit. Almost impossible to resist now - especially with roast chicken or grilled sausages! - this lovely value will continue to improve for the next 3-4 years.
