The 2007 vintage of the Clua Mas d'en Pol Blanca was our best selling Spanish white of the past 12 months -- the 2008 is better. Some background: Xavier Clua is among the most celebrated winemakers in the up-and-coming Terra Alta region, just southwest of Priorat. Born into a family with over four generations in winemaking, Xavier is producing outstanding wines from carefully tended old-vine vineyards and a judicious blending of modern technology (temperature control, stainless) and winemaking tradition (old basket presses and minimal intervention). The Mas d'en Pol Blanc is a fascinating wine. A blend of traditional Garnatxa Blanca(60%) spiced with Chardonnay (20%), Sauvignon Blanc (15%) and a dash of Muscat.
The 2008 Clua Blanca shares the previous vintage's rich, almost opulent, texture and boatloads of tropical fruits with just a touch of fresh cut grass. But, the 2008 has more cut and drive than last year's model with even more mid-palate intensity and a longer finish. Lovely stuff!
"Owner/winemaker Xavier Clua has fashioned his 2008 Mas d-en Pol Blanca from a blend of 60% Garnacha Blanca, 20% Chardonnay, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Muscat raised in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored, it sports an expressive perfume of mineral, fresh picked herbs, citrus, and stone fruits. Round and ripe on the palate, it has very good depth and concentration and a refreshing, fruit-filled finish. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 12-18 months."Wine Advocate 90 points
