Guy Ricard only makes about 700 cases of his top Vacqueyras from the oldest vines on his estate.  The Grenache and Syrah used for this cuvee are both so concentrated and dark that Guy adds no Mourvedre.  Still, amazing minerality and focus in such a big wine.  I tend to agree with Tanzer that a few years will improve this, but it’s in prime condition to enjoy with robust food now.

“Deep ruby. Powerful aromas of dark cherry, cassis and smoky herbs. Much more serious than the classique, with a deeper, darker fruit profile, more body and mounting sweetness. Unlike the basic bottling, this will demand-not just reward-patience. The finish is broad, sweet and very long.”International Wine Cellar 92 points

“An absolute whopper of a Vacqueyras is the 2007 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes, which comes from their oldest vines and is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. Licorice, charcoal, blackberry and cassis notes, along with hints of lavender and pepper, jump from the glass of this inky/purple-colored wine. Layered and multi-dimensional, with superb purity, fleshy, concentrated fruit, and perfect balance, this wine has an uncanny ability to be substantial in size but remains surprisingly elegant, with admirable purity. This is a super Vacqueyras to drink over the next 7-8 years.”Wine Advocate 93 points
