The Rhone Valley has had so many “great” vintages in the past 15 years that wines from merely “good” years tend to get overlooked. Too bad, because the best winemakers turned in lovely 2008s that have plenty of Rhone fruit but also an uncommon elegance and grace.
Example: Philippe Plantevin’s Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan 2008. Mainly Grenache (60%) with dashes of Syrah (26%), Mourvedre (5%) and Carignan (the rest), this was blended at harvest, co-fermented, and aged all in tank. Cool aromas show spicy blackberry fruit and a little Mourvedre earthy funkiness. In the mouth, silky and fresh blue/black berry fruit gain complexity from fresh earth and licorice root notes. This lovely and detailed with crisp acid and just the right touch of supporting tannins and a lovely lavender note emerging with the red raspberry and plum fruit on the finish. This will show great with roasted/grilled chicken or a simple pizza.
