A perennial California favorite, the 2008 Duckhorn Merlot has nearly 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure) plus 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc (for aromatics). A touch more powerful than the silky 2007, you’ll still find bright, lifted, red currant, plum, and baked blueberry fruit accented by Asian spice and a touch of earthy herb. Velvety in texture and nicely layered, the tannins are firm and just a bit grainy with high quality oak notes lingering at the end. Drinking well now and sure to improve for 5 years or so.
