Here’s another great example of the value you can find in dry reds from Portugal’s Douro Valley. Encostas do Douro’s vineyards are perched in the steep hills of the Baixo-Corgo sub-region in the heart of Port country. The wine is made from traditional Port grapes - Tinta Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), and Tinta Barroca – and fermented with natural Port yeasts in stainless steel and traditional stone lagares.
The result is a dry but rich and lush wine loaded with ripe black plum, raspberry, and a touch of red currant fruit. A touch of new oak adds spice and a hint of fresh herb, and the juicy acidity and whip of fine tannin give plenty of structure and freshness against the rich, sweet, fruit. Soft enough for party sipping, structured enough for roasted meats, and even able to improve for another 5 years or so. A delicious, compelling, value!
“Plum pudding and dark cherry flavors are joined by mocha and chocolate. Medium-grained tannins support minerally notes on the spicy finish. Drink now through 2016.”Wine Spectator 89 points
