How good is the September, 2013, release of Eric Rodez's Grands Vintages? Well, when we poured it side by side with Dom Perignon 2003, the votes were about 8 to 1 for Eric's wine! As always, it’s a 70/30 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend with all of the base wines aged in oak and with malo blocked. This year’s release is a blend of wines from the greatest Champagne vintages of the past 15 years, including 2004, 2003, 2002, 1999, 1998, and several others back through the mid-1990s. Nearly 8 years aging on the lees in bottle gives this a depth and complexity to go with massive power - but also keeps it fantastically fresh and vibrant.
The Wine Advocate has "discovered" Grand Vintages now, so we're not sure what will happen with prices or availablity. The 92 point rating and review is for last year's release - this year's is similar but better still!
"“Barrel-fermented from 70% Pinot and 30% Chardonnay with malo blocked, the multi-vintage Rodez NV Brut Cuvee des Grand Vintages L0912 delivers the layered mystery that I seek in the best Ambonnay wines, beginning with a nose of gentian and violet; ocean breeze, and crustacean shell reduction; not to mention intimations of the white peach, apple, grapefruit and pineapple that go on to constitute the luscious, tart-edged fruit matrix on this wine’s polished palate. There is both a shimmering mineral expression and a salivary gland-tugging saline savor in the long finish. Look for this to impress at table for at least another 2-3 years.”Wine Advocate 92 points
