Hanzell Chardonnay is one of Napa’s greatest, but it always needs a few years to open up and start to show. So, the winery has created a new (in 2007) wine that is meant to deliver pleasure right on release. The best, most open, barrels of Chardonnay that don’t quite make the cut for the long-lived Estate wine give kind of a “baby Hanzell.” In 2009, you’ll find lovely aromas of white flowers, citrus blossom, and tangy apple fruit. In the mouth, there’s plenty of Hanzell concentration, but also generous flavors of crisp apple, lemon peel and wet stones. Tastes a bit like a generous Chablis from a warm vintage with a long, stony, finish.
