People tend to think of Zweigelt as Austria's best red wine grape, but Pinot Noir shows excellent promise. At its best, Austrian Pinot is a cross between Burgundy's earthy elegance and the new world's fruit and richness. The 2005 Hillinger Eveline is a fine example with just enough age on it to begin to show extra complexity and depth. Ripe and full of black cherry/berry fruit, there's a smoky, earthy, note at first and then a pretty mineral streak on the finish. A great wine for mild sausages or grilled chicken.
