Established in 1967, Karl Erbes now runs this steep, slatey vineyard with his son Stefan. The grapes are picked from the Urzinger Wurzgarden, which just means "Urzinger's Spicegarden." The vineyard is one of the steepest in the Mosel and is ideally located to pick up the reflecting heat of the river. The soil is a mixed component of red slate and sandstone produced from long extinct volcanoes.
The father/son passion venture translates to the bottle, which displays elegant notes of fleshy peach, lemon zest and candied apricot. Some exotic fruits play on the palate as well. The lingering spice component of the wine makes it ideal for spicier dishes.
