Everything I love about great California Syrah is on display here. Sure, there’s plenty of richness and primary blue/black fruit, but the wine is also poised and loaded with the smoked meat and mineral character that says “Syrah.” After a spell in decanter, the 2007 Kingpin Rows burst forth with aromas of crushed herbs, garrigue, black pepper, and loads of ripe blueberry/blackberry fruit. On the palate, it’s rich and layered with flavors of black fruit, herbs, violets, pencil shavings, and a touch of white pepper. The tannins are ripe and silky and the finish is long and meaty.
