Pascal’s 2008 Grand Cru Corton blanc impressed from the first taste in barrel last year and has already gotten better in bottle. And, it remains a fine bargain for Grand Cru white Burgundy of this quality.
Most of the famous hill of Corton is planted to Pinot Noir, but Pascal grows Chardonnay in a small vineyard he grafted over from Pinot Noir after noticing how chalky and full of limestone the soil was. The 2008 Corton is already showing generous aromas of fresh butter, baked apple, lime peel, and a dash of cherval and mint. In the mouth, the wine is rich but perfectly balanced with mango, papaya, pineapple, and ripe apple fruit framed by a touch of butter, firm minerality, and some zesty citrus acidity. The finish sails on forever. This will peak around 2018-2022, but given a brief spell in decanter delivers loads of pleasure now.
